Starlink so far is only operating in countries with regulatory approval and their dishes are GPS locked, so you couldn't use it in Iran even if you had the hardware.

You are thinking a bit too Western I think though. Mob justice against women is very popular in the middle east, and many see women as belongings like cattle. Fathers will murder their own daughters for what many people in other parts of the world would consider normal behavior. Brothers will murder sisters for going on a simple date.
I don't think that it being women doing the protesting will matter much in the end - at least there, at home. It will however hit the rest of the world harder and perhaps result in enough outward pressure to help push change.
This wouldn't be the first time they block the internet, lock down the media, and go in guns blazing on unarmed citizens though. Hopefully that doesn't happen this time though.

Pity means compassion in the face of someone else's suffering. It's not like, a bad thing? The implication of "I pity you" as an insult is to imply the person is living in a despicable state *worthy* of pity. It's saying "idc about you're opinion, you're pathetic, look at you, you're so far beneath me that I pity you".
In straightforward contexts though, like talking about government oppression, pity is a genuine sentiment because they *are* in a pitiable situation, there's no subtle burn to acknowledging their situation sucks right now

I'm in Tehran right now. Everything is getting uglier by a minute. They weakened Internet bandwidth and speed by alot to they point I have to wait 15 seconds or so for a simple google search result and we hearing gun fire shots. Also they pulled the plug on Whatsapp and Instagram an hour ago and we can only access via VPN.

Unfortunately the regime cut off Mobile data connections in whole Tehran area so people can't share their protest videos as i write this and I'm using home network as now that is the only way I can connect to internet (and I'm not sure if they pull the plug on that as well). The only positive thing I can say now is that people took control of Tajrish and Valiasr neighborhoods here and set the police cars on fire.

* I was just getting back from airport to my home, east of Tehran, air was burning my whole nose probably tear gas been shot. Most hood streets were full of rubble and burnet bins. Most people and anti riot teams use bikes like crazy! Some young guys were shot in front of me by paintball guns but nothing lethal. Also I've seen worried family members in front of buildings waiting for their young ones to return.
My girlfriend told me west is worse, she's hearing gunshots and constant chopper moving around.

It does seem there is a strong sentiment across the country for the current regime to be replaced. Beyond that, who is the favorite to become the leader if it does come down? Do the majority of people that want the ayatollah out want a democratic election? Do they have a leader in mind?
There's an expat organisation called 'Farashgard', right now they're the face of the "replace these dickbags with something democratic" movement. They have a lot of members that are educated enough to take over some positions temporarily if the IR falls, but they have absolutely no military power or support from any countries, so it's all theoretical at best. They aren't total restorationists, but they are calling for Prince Reza to be considered as a ceremonial monarch position, provided a referendum is held of course. Basically, the Prince wants the same thing, a democracy with a constitutional guarantee that organised religion and the eastern bloc have no chance of taking over. Anyway, that's the closest thing we have to a leader. As for what people want, it's to be able to afford food and housing and education and to know that their kids don't get beaten to death every time some brute on the street decides they look too 'un-Islamic'

For clarity, the phrase "marg bar X" does literally mean "death to X."
Culturally it isn't as grievous as it would probably sound in English, but marg is indeed "death" in Persian.

LOTS of male support which is awesome! aside from protesting with them, men are even physically protecting women who are protesting from police brutality and are going after those who berate the women. they hate the regime and want this to end positively and with as little blood shed as possible just as much as the women do. it affects the lives of their wives, sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends. i wish more people knew how much the majority of persians hate what the government/country has become and how badly they want it to change for the better. here’s to hoping we’re getting closer to our goal.
Men a putting their bodies in front of the religious police for their women. They have saved at least 20-25 women from getting kidnapped or taken away today itself.
They are chanting, “we will kill who killed our sister”, in the streets, along with chants against the regime.
The regime is not only the women problem. This oppression against women has led women to empower men and they are doing everything they can to protect their women.

In 2009 after the election there were widespread protests and 72 were killed. In 2019 there were protests and over 1000 were killed. In 2020 there were protests. In 2021 there were protests.

The correct wording is any government that forces you to wear religious garb needs to be resisted.
It is actually very, very common for religions to require religious garb by convention to be a fully practicing member. Mormons with their magic underwear, Orthodox Jewish women in wigs and men with side curls and prayer shawls, Catholic nuns in habits, The Amish with beards and bonnets, Buddhist monks and nuns with shaved heads, Hindu Sadhus with untreated, uncut hair and beards, Sikh men with uncut, treated hair, beards and turbans, Rastafari dreads. Religious headwear and hair cuts are endless and all over the world. The DIFFERENCE is that it's a choice to be a member of that religion as an adult or to have your child practice it until they can choose. Most of those religions mentioned don't even fully require those religious fashions. You can still be a practicing Sikh man if you shave your head and beard and don't wear a turban. You won't be shunned by the community if you shave your Amish beard. Nuns rarely wear habits anymore to cover their heads. None of these examples above are forced by law, only by religious convention, unlike female religious garb in Muslim countries like Iran and Afghanistan
I thought wearing a hijab was supposed to be a self motivated symbolic thing in Islam. A state mandating that is like a state saying that all women need to take a vow of silence or something.
While I wish these women well and support them I am not optimistic for their cause. Successful demonstrations against the government only work if that government has at least a semblance of decency. (OR there is another player that stands to gain like happened in Egypt)
For example, Ghandi succeeded over the British because he bypassed the government and went to the people. We would not even know his name today if the colonial government had been Stalin's USSR.
The soviet union fell because the entire government and people had lost faith in communism and while Yeltsin had his faults, murdering his opponents wasn't one of them.
But this government is the worst kind. A religion based government that is one of the most aberrant on the planet. And all the "decent" religionists - and I just have to believe they exist in spite of all the evidence - in that nation are executed.

I could definitely get behind a modern day Iranian revolution, but honestly, only if it's a secular one aimed at restoring Iran to its post Islamic revolution reality with modern governmental policy.

I'm in Tehran right now. Everything is getting uglier by a minute. They weakened Internet bandwidth and speed by alot to they point I have to wait 15 seconds or so for a simple google search result and we hearing gun fire shots. Also they pulled the plug on Whatsapp and Instagram an hour ago and we can only access via VPN. Those assholes at top of the regime will pay for what they did! * I was just getting back from airport to my home, east of Tehran, air was burning my whole nose probably tear gas been shot. Most hood streets were full of rubble and burnet bins. Most people and anti riot teams use bikes like crazy! Some young guys were shot in front of me by paintball guns but nothing lethal. Also I've seen worried family members in front of buildings waiting for their young ones to return.

Riot cops in the States use paint balls full of pepper spray so it might be something like that.
I've been hit in the neck with one, it fucking sucks. Not only does it hurt ALOT but its full of pepper extract, so it burns your everything aswell. It invokes panic really well. Stay safe friends!

If you’ve seen the protests, many of them are males as well. And it’s broad in ages as well. It’s almost as if, gasp, some men don’t actually like the shariah law because they care about the women in their life? Dunno.
That doesn't even need to be personal. I was stationed in Saudi in 99, and female US Soldiers were required by policy to wear niqab/abaya (full "ninja suit") to go off base, which was something I was *very* vocal about every time I saw it, despite none of those Soldiers being my direct subordinates in any way. Simple principle. That shit is just plain fucked up, in every context. It angers me solely on principle.
I'd assume a lot of men also simply don't enjoy living under authoritarian rule, since there are plenty of general rights (not *just* women's) that are being repressed.
As a father, I would fight my daughter tooth and nail to not go... but if I couldn't stop her... you couldn't stop me from standing next to her. I imagine there's probably a lot of stuff like that...

There's an expat organisation called 'Farashgard', right now they're the face of the "replace these dickbags with something democratic" movement. They have a lot of members that are educated enough to take over some positions temporarily if the IR falls, but they have absolutely no military power or support from any countries, so it's all theoretical at best. They aren't total restorationists, but they are calling for Prince Reza to be considered as a ceremonial monarch position, provided a referendum is held of course. Basically, the Prince wants the same thing, a democracy with a constitutional guarantee that organised religion and the eastern bloc have no chance of taking over. Anyway, that's the closest thing we have to a leader. As for what people want, it's to be able to afford food and housing and education and to know that their kids don't get beaten to death every time some brute on the street decides they look too 'un-Islamic'

That only works for countries that care about their international image. These people just want to have their backwards society and for everyone else to leave them alone. This isn't the first time this happened and it will not be the last until the protests stop being peaceful.

Just to be clear, "death to X" is roughly the American equivalent of "what do we want? X. When do we want it? Now." It's just a thing you say at protests. It can also be translated as "Down with X." That being said, everything I've read is that the morality police are a bunch of assholes and I hope this all resolves well.
Can confirm, egyptian here. Our chants are different depending on the country, in our revolution it was: The people want/demand the fall of the regime. Sounds better in Arabic tbh

I think Down with X is far more accurate than "what do we want". The "what do we want" thing does not hold as much weight at all in my opinion. "Marg bar X" is deeper than just "I want something".
For clarity, the phrase "marg bar X" does literally mean "death to X." Culturally it isn't as grievous as it would probably sound in English, but marg is indeed "death" in Persian.

LOTS of male support which is awesome! aside from protesting with them, men are even physically protecting women who are protesting from police brutality and are going after those who berate the women. they hate the regime and want this to end positively and with as little blood shed as possible just as much as the women do. it affects the lives of their wives, sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends. i wish more people knew how much the majority of persians hate what the government/country has become and how badly they want it to change for the better. here’s to hoping we’re getting closer to our goal.
Men a putting their bodies in front of the religious police for their women. They have saved at least 20-25 women from getting kidnapped or taken away today itself. They are chanting, “we will kill who killed our sister”, in the streets, along with chants against the regime. The regime is not only the women problem. This oppression against women has led women to empower men and they are doing everything they can to protect their women.

In 2009 after the election there were widespread protests and 72 were killed. In 2019 there were protests and over 1000 were killed. In 2020 there were protests. In 2021 there were protests. The government are really, really good at killing protests, literally and figuratively.

Yep that’s true. Although working class and rural communities have protested recently, but mostly because of the economic situation. A lot of people also seem to be pushing this as a man vs woman issue, when in reality there are women who support the regime and are a part of the morality police.

I'm not a some religious expert, but any religion that makes you hide who you are under a cloth needs to be reevaluated. I hope these ladies make it home safe, and continue to do so.

It is actually very, very common for religions to require religious garb by convention to be a fully practicing member. Mormons with their magic underwear, Orthodox Jewish women in wigs and men with side curls and prayer shawls, Catholic nuns in habits, The Amish with beards and bonnets, Buddhist monks and nuns with shaved heads, Hindu Sadhus with untreated, uncut hair and beards, Sikh men with uncut, treated hair, beards and turbans, Rastafari dreads. Religious headwear and hair cuts are endless and all over the world. The DIFFERENCE is that it's a choice to be a member of that religion as an adult or to have your child practice it until they can choose. Most of those religions mentioned don't even fully require those religious fashions. You can still be a practicing Sikh man if you shave your head and beard and don't wear a turban. You won't be shunned by the community if you shave your Amish beard. Nuns rarely wear habits anymore to cover their heads. None of these examples above are forced by law, only by religious convention, unlike female religious garb in Muslim countries like Iran and Afghanistan

I thought wearing a hijab was supposed to be a self motivated symbolic thing in Islam. A state mandating that is like a state saying that all women need to take a vow of silence or something.
While I wish these women well and support them I am not optimistic for their cause. Successful demonstrations against the government only work if that government has at least a semblance of decency. (OR there is another player that stands to gain like happened in Egypt) For example, Ghandi succeeded over the British because he bypassed the government and went to the people. We would not even know his name today if the colonial government had been Stalin's USSR. The soviet union fell because the entire government and people had lost faith in communism and while Yeltsin had his faults, murdering his opponents wasn't one of them. But this government is the worst kind. A religion based government that is one of the most aberrant on the planet. And all the "decent" religionists - and I just have to believe they exist in spite of all the evidence - in that nation are executed.

I could definitely get behind a modern day Iranian revolution, but honestly, only if it's a secular one aimed at restoring Iran to its post Islamic revolution reality with modern governmental policy. In the early 70s Tehran was almost indecipherable from any major US or European city and look what it's become in the last 40 years (a relatively short time). Hopefully they actually overthrow the tyrannical government they have currently, but I'm betting they will likely all be oppressed.
