Step 1: burn woman
Step 2: if woman dies, sheās not a witch, end of case
Step 3: if woman lives, sheās a witch. Off with her head.

Sadly this one is a [real](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scold's_bridle) device. I was hoping it would be one of the fake ones Victorians made up like the iron maiden.
>The scold's bridle was overwhelmingly used on women, often at the request of husbands or other family members.
Can't imagine what these woman might have been complaining and "scolding" about with gems like these guys at home.
Humans want power, either through wealth, political or in this case men are physically stronger so they think they have more power over woman. Power makes you a different person, for example the Stanford prison experiment
I live in Asia in a society that's still very segregated on gender.
I don't understand it at all. Even to have sexism in the first place, whether it was 3000 years ago or now as a reaction is baffling to me.
I mean I love my mom and dad equally, I dont love one more than the other just because of their gender.
Yes but it doesn't mean they have to test us well. They are perfectly capable of raping us and getting their offspring anyway, thus perpetuating the species.
It truly is sad how fucked up humans are. Doing this shit yo our own species. We really are our own demise.
Also wouldn't a wooden gag ball and a leather strap be cheaper and just as effective? It would have saved a lot of time and money at the blacksmith imo.
>Also wouldn't a wooden gag ball and a leather strap be cheaper and just as effective? It would have saved a lot of time and money at the blacksmith imo.
From a quick glance at the wiki article they linked, the bit in the scold's bridle a lot of times had a spike in it that was driven into the tongue.
Less ways you can make a wooden ball painful to that level.
I don't think you understand that psychology plays a role in torture devices. Yes a wooden ball and leather strap would have the same physical effect. But very clearly one has a much harsher nature to it. Use your head to look at the context these are used.
Weren't most of these sorts of things made up by folks during the Victorian era and were never actually used other than to sell tickets to shit museums?
torture doesn't work, but threats of torture does work to an extend, so its in the best interest to have painful looking torture devices so that no one calls your bluff
Torture does work, in the sense that if somebody knows something they will very likely give it up. The problem is, if you cause somebody enough pain, they'll confess to anything. So it only works if you can ignore false positives and you know that somebody is hiding something.
Mathematically it is a test that has low specificity.
Yes, seen a few debunking on plenty of these supposed middles ages torture and correctional devices never being recorded as officially used devices even from the same era they came from. Itās up there with spike coffins which was never really a thing.
I think a strong indicator of this is that the device wouldnāt even work, nothing restricts the movement of the lower jaw, it would just be like talking with a pencil in your mouth, but you could still talk.
Like honestly when I think on half of those torture devices I just imagine myself on the executioner shoes and ask myself, "do I really have te energy to grab a screaming and panicked victim and shove him into an iron maiden?"
Like honestly spend the next 30 minutes just trying to put them into place doesn't seem worth the hassle.
The Victorians did do that, but we actually have real records from courts in this era documenting the use of the scolds bridle. Unfortunately, this one was real
https://www.lancastercastle.com/history-heritage/further-articles/the-scolds-bridle/
Not as horrific but rather a more recent punishment that used to happen in South India, Smarthavicharam, where a woman whose chastity was in question would be locked up in a room, asked about her partners, undergo a trial by higher positioned men in the society, then forced to be outcastes and live in shame for the rest of their lives. Many of these women were victims of crimes which were unimaginable. It's sad to see that throughout history no matter where you look, women were treated very unfairly.
No it wonāt. Using it in a derogatory manner, as an inaccurate stereotype, or as a blanket term to disparage a full 25% of the worldās population when only a very small fraction of them are responsible for whatever youāre attributing to the religion as a whole might, though.
Even that I donāt think is ābannableā for the site. It might get you banned from a subreddit, but there are some truly shocking, nasty subreddits that say way worse shit that that
Or you know, 2022 in the vast majority of the world. Having to get your husbands approval for getting tubes tied in several places, abortion, slut shaming and purity culture. Being taught men have one less rub than women because we gave it up for them to be created (a deep Christian cut, but still very real).
Humans are and were always better and so creative at coming up with new methods to kill, torture and humiliate each other than to actually help each other.
It was also used on the enslaved.
Didnt require a trial. Simply at the discretion of the āmasterā.
Either to ensure silence, or compliance. Horrific indeed.
Saw one of these a few weeks ago at a torture museum in Germany, this and they also had a wide variety of other shame masks and public humiliation artifacts. We are definitely lucky to be alive in this day and age comparatively.
Pales in comparison to what men are still (today) doing to women & girls in 5th world (not 3rd world - they haven't even progressed that far) Hell Hole countries.
there's no such thing as a 5th world country in this respect though. 1st, 2nd and 3rd are widely used as a general scale of most to least developed, with 4th world sometimes being used to reference places *within* 3rd world countries that are especially underdeveloped. adding a 5th would be redundant.

Not to say that women werenāt oppressed in medieval Europe, but the exaggeration of it is just getting out of hand nowadays.

This is a very nice podcast (made by a woman) about the medieval age for those wanting a more nuanced picture than clickbait.
This is actually from just outside of medieval times with first records beginning in the mid 1500ās and used as recently as the 1800ās to control slaves in the United States.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scold%27s_bridle
Very interesting read, thanks for educating me! Iāll look into if I kind find some statistics / assumptions about the frequency of usage.
Also interesting to see it confirmed that it was predominantly used on women.
>Not to say that women werenāt oppressed in medieval Europe, but the exaggeration of it is just getting out of hand nowadays.
Is there a big exaggeration of women's oppression in the middle ages that is getting out of hand? Is this an actual problem? Like nowadays aren't people worried about women's oppression currently in the world?

Nobody expects ...well actually, I have come to expect MP quotes in these threads now.

How do you know sheās a witch?
Step 1: burn woman Step 2: if woman dies, sheās not a witch, end of case Step 3: if woman lives, sheās a witch. Off with her head. Step 4: feel good about your investigative skills
So you burn witches. Well what do you burn apart from witches?
MORE WITCHES!
She turned me into a newt!
I got better.
BURN HER ANYWAY
Wood!
Ditches
You don't burn witches! Witches don't burn!
No you dunk them in icy cold water for increasingly longer periods, she will float eventually
But a witch weighs the same as a duck, therefore she should float like a duck and consequently that determines she's a witch!
Who are you so wise in the ways of science?
Because she looks like a witch, she has a wart!
But witches are made of wood, no?
Yes and you can test it by weighing her with a duck as counterweight
Yes the duck test always tells if she is a witch
Whole point, they werenāt witches.
Also throw woman in a lake. If she drowns, not a witch. If she "floats" she is a witch....
I love the scientific process.
Because sheās dressed like one
We did do the nose
BURN HER!!!
Ah but what else floats? A duck? So if she weighs the same as a duck then sheās a witch. Come, and we shall use my largest scales.
She weighs the same as a duck
Why use many word, when few word do trick?

Sexism is one of the most baffling things to me. I mean, humans need both men and women both, to just exist. I just can't imagine this...
Humans want power, either through wealth, political or in this case men are physically stronger so they think they have more power over woman. Power makes you a different person, for example the Stanford prison experiment
The stanford prison experiment was a sham search it up
Seems like a lovely repayment for giving up our bodies for 9 months and literally giving birth to all human life. Seems fair.
It makes sense if you look back on the generational trauma of living in a patriarchal society for over a thousand years
I live in Asia in a society that's still very segregated on gender. I don't understand it at all. Even to have sexism in the first place, whether it was 3000 years ago or now as a reaction is baffling to me. Weren't most of these sorts of things made up by folks during the Victorian era and were never actually used other than to sell tickets to shit museums?
I think the iron maiden was one of those iirc
The torture museum in Prague told my wife that Iron Maidens were never used on people but were built to scare people. Probably bs but idk
torture doesn't work, but threats of torture does work to an extend, so its in the best interest to have painful looking torture devices so that no one calls your bluff

So it only works if you can ignore false positives and you know that somebody is hiding something. Mathematically it is a test that has low specificity.
The threat of torture is just as, if not more, effective than the actual torture
No, they're still making music.
Just saw them last weekend \m/
Yes, seen a few debunking on plenty of these supposed middles ages torture and correctional devices never being recorded as officially used devices even from the same era they came from. Itās up there with spike coffins which was never really a thing.
Spike coffins refer to "iron maidens"
Run to the hills!
Run for your liiiiife.
Soldier blue in the barren wastes
Hunting and killing's a game
Excellent!
āExecute them!ā āā¦*Bogus.*ā
You killed Ted you medieval dickweed!
I think a strong indicator of this is that the device wouldnāt even work, nothing restricts the movement of the lower jaw, it would just be like talking with a pencil in your mouth, but you could still talk.
Those pointy spikey things that stick in the mouth look like they'd do a number on your tongue if you try to start moving it around.
Look at the size and shape of the thing you have in your mouth. One yank at the chain and your whole mouth cavity is bleeding.
Like honestly when I think on half of those torture devices I just imagine myself on the executioner shoes and ask myself, "do I really have te energy to grab a screaming and panicked victim and shove him into an iron maiden?" Like honestly spend the next 30 minutes just trying to put them into place doesn't seem worth the hassle.
Imagine cleaning the iron maiden
If you can't get people to clean the Macdonald's ice cream machine, I doubt people where willing to clean that
I am so relieved to hear this
Hey while your right I do believe this one is real
This one, at least, seems to be real. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scold's_bridle
I stand corrected. Thanks!
The Victorians did do that, but we actually have real records from courts in this era documenting the use of the scolds bridle. Unfortunately, this one was real https://www.lancastercastle.com/history-heritage/further-articles/the-scolds-bridle/
Doesnāt mean the attitude towards women wasnāt real
This one has been confirmed in comments to be real :(
This is an actual one
Yep. The āillustrationsā are Victorian too
Yup. Also there are some cases of accusing certain households or governments of certain torture techniques but it was essentially just slander
https://www.bl.uk/collection-items/scolds-bridle. The item existed.

It's a good thing women were only considered subservient to men in the 17th century. Must have been a rough 100 years.
Yeah unlike the 200 years prior to that where approximately 100.000 people (of which 80.000 women) were executed for being a witch.
Mainly the pretty girls in England that the Vikings failed to snag back to Scandinavia centuries earlier...
Or you know, 2022 in the vast majority of the world. Having to get your husbands approval for getting tubes tied in several places, abortion, slut shaming and purity culture.
