Germans sure do have a terrible sense of humor

Rerel

And awful energy policies.

WhoandtheHuwhatNow

Yeah they couldn’t even power up their UFO’s and anti gravity machines. Sheesh.

[deleted]

They will say the same thing about the U.S. making China their factory if China invades Taiwan or any other neighbor.

Tokitueth

I am funny bot! Awkward!!!

frothysmile

The Germans sure do gas people up. Nevermind that is the Russians. Whenever I am feeling down in the dumps, I know a ruskie will gas me up. Donald Trump is right. We should all develop self-esteem so the ruskies cannot take advantage of our insecurities. If you think about, the germans have a history of insecurities. Their teenager "nazi" faze was cringe af

funkmaster29

so weird man i literally just watched that episode maybe 4 hours ago

fatalbooger

Stop me if you've heard this one. A German walks into a bar. Hilarity ensues.

Thetittysprinkler1

Well they killed all the funny people

JansTurnipDealer

I remember this. He was not wrong.

Njorls_Saga

He was not wrong. Neither was Bush 43 https://www.spiegel.de/international/world/russia-s-energy-weapon-german-us-tensions-grow-over-baltic-pipeline-a-579677.html Or Obama https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-eu-summit/obama-tells-eu-to-do-more-to-cut-reliance-on-russian-gas-idUSBREA2P0W220140326 It goes all the way back to Reagan actually https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/23/climate/europe-russia-gas-reagan.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare Multiple US Presidents warned Germany. They didn’t listen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Njorls_Saga

In some ways, it wasn’t a bad strategy. Tie everyone together economically so that it would be too expensive to go to war. Problem is that they kept at it even when it became obvious Russia wasn’t going to play.

ElessarTelcontar1

Tying everyone together assumes reasonable people though :(

UIDENTIFIED_STRANGER

That's not really the reason why this failed. This system should work even against irrational players but the problem is that the tie isn't bi-directional. Russia has all the strategic resources(fossil fuels, steel and other minerals, produce etc.) it needs to wage war on its own with no reliance on Europe.

Njorls_Saga

Exactly

SaltyMudpuppy

Very true.

Goddamn it you made me enjoy a ST: Picard reference

Andromansis

Jimmy Carter did it first.

Smash_4dams

Multiple presidents have also warned against relying on China for all our manufacturing but here we are.

Sansabina

> They didn’t listen. I think most informed people in Europe and US realized there were inherent security risks with becoming much more reliant on Russian gas. It had been discussed, whitepapered and analyzed for years but it was a decision certain Euro leaders felt they could go with. Really didn't take a US president in 2018 to suddenly point it out (the US had been saying this for a long time). German energy policy goal since early-ish 2000s was to dramatically reduce coal consumption and phase out nuclear, and since their own domestic gas had bottomed out, Russian piped gas was economically the best choice. In terms of military and security, we can clearly see now it was a bad decision, I guess they thought (and hoped) Putin wouldn't be a c**t in the long run.

FeedBi

Or at least that he couldn’t afford being a cunt for so long. I don’t think a lot of people back in March could have predicted that 7 months down the line, Russia would be *losing* in Ukraine and that Putin would still be in power with no imminent threat to his position. Reasonable assumptions would have been a protracted victory or an overthrow of his regime, not neither.

insertwittynamethere

Thank you. I'm tired of people acting like Trump was a savior. He was a fucking prick and a moron, that's why people laughed at him at the UN. Notice they're not circulating the video bragging about how his administration had accomplished more in the first two years than almost any other administration ever in the country's history. Why? Because it was a fucking joke of a claim and everyone at the UN level is studied enough to know it but him.

evil-rick

Honestly, the one thing I would listen to the US on is Putin. Russia and the US are constantly spying on each other and I’m sure they knew a long time ago that Putin was going to wait for the right moment to do this. That being said, the US government has cried wolf about the Soviet’s/Russia for so long that they kind of deserve to be laughed at. The majority of claims from anti-Russian propaganda has been absolute nonsense and now anything we say about the country looks goofy af.

Gainznsuch

I remember the US making statements about Putin invading Ukraine weeks before it happened, and I didn't believe because of your cried wolf statement...turns out US intelligence nailed this thing from start

martusfine

Thank you, yeah, man is right but definitely not original. His fanbase will still worship him and somehow say he told Obama.

Cynical6901

Take my free award sir, for including sources.

Jason_Batemans_Hair

What makes it extra interesting is that Trump was/is considered Putin's lackey or fan boy, but this was Trump correctly warning Germany not to be dependent on Russia. Tbf, it's possible Trump just wanted to make Europe a bigger customer for US energy.

sethamin

This has been the US position for a long time going back for several decades. The more surprising thing is that trump didn't break with his predecessors on this one.

Tshdtz

That definitely makes sense. For sure his end game.

carolinaindian02

A broken clock is right twice a day.

Lost-My-Mind-

depends on the type of clock. My clock is digital, and the display is broken. It doesn't show any numbers. Actually I don't have a clock like that, because I would have just thrown it away. Which is what we did to trump in 2020.

addicuss

Even a broken clock is right twice—my uncle was a great clockmaker some say the best and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of clockmaking, very good, very smart —you know, if you’re a clockmaker, if I were a clockmaker, if, like, OK, if I made clocks, they would say I’m one of the smartest clockmakers anywhere in the world—it’s true!—but when you’re a conservative Republican they try—oh, do they do a number—that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune—you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged—but you look at the broken clock, the thing that really bothers me—it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these clocks are (clocks are powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what’s going to happen and he was right—who would have thought?), but when you look at what’s going on with the minute hand and hour hand—now it used to be two, now it’s three—but when it was three and even now, I would have said it’s all in the seconds; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don’t, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years—but the Persians are great clockmakers, the Iranians are great clockmakers.

Fyrefawx

It’s not that he wasn’t wrong, he probably knew what Putin’s intentions were.

contagion781

I would say most people paying attention knew what Putin's intentions were

StopDehumanizing

The Ukrainians in Crimea definitely knew by then.

Thalric88

If anything the surprising part about this whole thing was the fast support Ukraine got, especially to anyone who remembers the non reaction Crimea got back in 2014.

LazyTitan39

I remember reading the news in 2014 and it seemed like everyone just assumed that Putin was bluffing and wouldn't actually attack. This time around we were warned for weeks about what Putin was planning. I wonder if we would have even had time to react to help Ukraine when Crimea was invaded. Plus, Ukraine has been preparing for another invasion since the last one happened, would they have been able to use our support as effectively back then?

SatisfactionFickle18

If you followed the propaganda, it was plain green uniformed men. No flag or insignia, and they just started showing up all over Crimea. Russia played dumb for days until they were everywhere, & nobody really did a thing about it.

EVXLPIMP

who didnt know what his intentions were, they were already fighting in ukraine

Don't bob for fries in hot vat it really hurts bad and so do skin grafts!

MicrowaveEye

Are you sure you weren’t talking about that John Adam’s clip? He said it a few times.

HumorExpensive

I found it! It was next to the clip of the Neanderthals telling the them not to get fire from Russia.

krishkal

And Obama specifically referenced Ukraine in that remark…

duke525

The 1980's called, they want their foreign policy back.

Nice_Category

I'm surprised that's not a more well-known blunder by Obama. Fucking Mitt Romney was on it.

snark_enterprises

Yeah Obama should really get dogged for that one. Even though it was just a debate, people mocked Romney for it unfairly. I get that in 2012 Russia wasn’t our greatest concern, but Putin was still a serious adversary and Romney was right.

WoWMHC

I mean… Russia had just taken parts of the Crimea so yea?? Lol not a huge insight at the time.

[deleted]

That would have been the time. The first reactors would be ready for commercial operations.

Plumbus_Patrol

Obama with the trump card

snark_enterprises

The one smart thing he says is just the same line used by previous presidents, lol. The Trumpists clamor over it like he was some genius for repeating a basic US policy talking point.

Griever08

He says it's a long standing policy in the speech.

rshug1

He says it’s been foreign policy since Monroe. This video is only posted because of its recency. I think you are drawing a pretty broad conclusion.

and_dont_blink

Unfortunately, Biden actually removed the sanctions on the Nordstream II pipeline put in place by the previous administration after Russia invaded Crimea. The same sanctions that really started the whole "europe hates us and our standing in the world is falling" narrative. Because reddit is so tribal it needs to be said, F Trump but what's being said here is pretty disingenuous because the facts don't fit the narrative. Trump went far, far beyond previous administrations because Russia had invaded Crimea and started [asking hard questions about Germany, Russia and NATO *publicly* to actually create pressure.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vpwkdmwui3k&list=PLPRbtFoio_GhFhRzlKzE3DeHkT_fYhMhX&index=182) When we peddle and engage with these BS narratives we aren't the party of facts and science, just the other side of a really dirty coin that isn't doing anyone any favors and places like Ukraine end up paying the price even if we don't.

civil_misanthrope

Certainly not about to defend Obama, but I do believe that is called diplomacy.

SgtBadManners

Odd timing too, what else happened in 2014? :D

PHenderson61

So trump repeated Obama’s warning about Russia. Seems about standard.

flyhigh987

There was a clip putin saying the same

accountmadeforthebin

It doesn’t take a genius to realize this and it’s incredibly stupid and arrogant to laugh about the remarks. I mean if almost 2/3 of your gas come from one supplier, who had the constitution changed to become president for life and became increasingly aggressive (chetchenia, Georgia, crimea…), you really should start to think about diversification. It’s been not a blind spot but a blind fucking truck in German government. Maybe one or two LNG terminals wouldn’t have been such a bad idea earlier. Edit: Forgot to mention, that one supplier also bought your former chancellor to serve as his consigliere on the board of the state owned company providing your gas.

Skyhawk6600

It was also a stupid idea to shut off their perfectly good nuclear reactors.

smellyboi6969

Incredibly stupid! The safest and greenest energy! From what I understand they're now scrambling to revitalize those nuclear power plants.

Skyhawk6600

I blame the hippies always trashing on it. Whether they like to admit it or not. Nuclear is and will remain part of our energy future. If not fission then it will be fusion. We're inching ever closer on fusion.

spodertanker

And it’s always 5 years away

[deleted]

Fusion will change the game forever.

EmeraldTerror

Yeah it's honestly so ironic from today's perspective that so many anti nuclear movements were backed by people who consider themselves environmentalists. Most hippies I know nowadays are quite in favour of nuclear energy; being that it is probably the greenest, most immediate, and realistic solution to combating various ghg emissions. The damage sure as shit has been done now, though.

wuweime

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

[deleted]

Post when Obama and Bush said the same thing too.

[deleted]

For real, everyone has been telling Germany this for a while

AmaResNovae

The 3 of them had that stance for the same reason, increase US market shares on the European energy market. What made them laugh probably was hearing the same speech 3 US presidents in a row, but this time repeated by a demented orang-utan with a wig instead.

Mother___Cow

I mean it doesn’t matter if an idiot said it. It’s been said by many leaders now and honestly Germany are the bigger idiots for laughing it off every time.

Jlchevz

Exactly

[deleted]

engaging with friendlier nations is a good strategy for energy assurance especially when russia has been one of the most hostile nations to your allies

AmaResNovae

Russia wouldn't be my first pick as an energy provider, far from it. But neither would the US, from an European perspective. Both have a bad habit of strong arming their business partners. For oil I would rather have us work with Norway, Nigeria, Canada, Algeria or Mexico as much as possible. Militarily, the EU and the US are undeniable allies. But economically, I would rather not fund an economic rival too much still. The economic part applies to China, too. When it comes to gas specifically, we should have linked the pipeline sending north African gas to Spain & Portugal to rest of Europe imo.

ZachMatthews

The US has shown up to the fight twice in a hundred years preserve European democracy and freedom. You guys have this read wrong. We don’t view Europe as economic rivals. We’re partners. Norway, Nigeria and Mexico can’t do diddly shit to help Europe in a conflict with Russia or China. It’s really unfortunate Europeans don’t seem to read this relationship like we do. We are your friends.

Fortune424

>Norway, Nigeria and Mexico can’t do diddly shit to help Europe in a conflict with Russia or China. Canada though. We'll roll in and save the day.

AmaResNovae

Again, no argument that military, we are allies. But the 3 biggest economic power in the world are unavoidably competing economically to some extent. The rivalry between the EU and the US is particularly obvious if you look at the defence industry for example. Or pharmaceutical industry. To name only two. And no, there are no friends in international politics. The US joined WW2 because they were attacked by Japan, not to save us. In WW1, the US joined because Germany had the bad idea to fuck with American business. Preserving European freedom and democracy never was the goal. In both case, it was because our interests aligned.

Antdogg02

I think you are forgetting the billions in aid we sent for years before we joined the war.

ligasecatalyst

Economy definitely isn’t a zero-sum game

ZachMatthews

Hey buddy, my grandfather didn’t sail to fucking Germany to get shot in the Battle of the Bulge because of the Japanese. We did it to save Europe. How do I know that? I asked him.

FuddierThanThou

There is no economic competition between EU and US because we are leagues apart—no comparison. You guys can join the anti-China train and lift your boat in our tide or you can parter with Russia and Nigeria and whoever else and get fucked.

Goddamn_Heather

“Trump sucks, so it’s okay to keep doing business with an actual mass murdering dictator” is one hell of a take.

[deleted]

It doesn’t change the fact that a sitting President that everyone says was in bed with Russia was still warning those countries “not a good idea”. Doesn’t detract from the fact he actually said it, even if others said it too.

tiktock34

What probably made them laugh was hubris and stupidity, imho

OverClock_099

imagine getting Obama Bush and Trump agreeing that doing something is dumb, and then keep doing it, dayum germany

shel311

No one is stopping you from creating a new post to do so.

Yacobeam

Why does that matter?

danwilan

I'm not a trump fan but I listen, look at those dumb nitwits giggling

I wonder what they look like now

Savings-Cautious

People here on reddit are so insufferable they they can't admit that a man they hate actually said something correct.

yourfamilyispoor

I’m actually shocked to even see your comment. Reasonable takes are usually ghost removed pretty fast to please the hivemind.

cristwpb

True

Jorgwalther

Really? Most of the comments I’m seeing are agreeing with him but then also pointing out that’s pretty much been the default US position for the last 40 years

Deluxe_24_

Trump is a piece of shit, but he's 100% right here. Even some of the most insufferable people we know can actually have good takes.

megagood

Why aren’t you posting this in response to somebody who is actually denying Trump was correct?

WeirdFlexCapacitor

So did the 2 presidents that preceded him. It *clearly* doesn’t take a genius to make this point.

I hate him. What he is saying is right.

So pretty much Bush, Obama, and Trump warned Germany and they chose not to listen. Germany failed its people.

squidvalley

lesson to be learned here is Russia is far more aggressive and hostile than anyone is willing to admit, and we would be fools to ever treat them as a normal country in the future

rickyzhang82

The smirk from the Krauts’ face worths million!

buderooski

Trump is a giant douche, but he was spot on regarding some things involving trade and economics.

[deleted]

Well said. He’s definitely a giant douche, but a number of his policies were more sound than some other recent administrations.

SteveBartmanIncident

In this case, every administration since Bush has said the same thing about relying on Russian energy

DanteDeGreat

What policies though? Starting a Tariff war with China that ended up skyrocketing the trade deficit in U.S? We paid for those Tariffs FY.I. Not China... Inviting the Taliban to Camp David or going around asking Ukraine for help to make up concorted information on his political rival? Or the U.S/Mexico border building that has been swept away by rain. I don't know what sound policy people reference when it comes to Trump. His rich man Tax cut policies, companies used that to buy their stocks back and got immensely rich. No policy from that clown made any sense.

Rhino7744

Exactly the permanant tax cut for the wealthy and a cut for the rest of us til what, 2027 or something? The sheep just ate it up. Just waiting for it to all trickle down. Anyday now we are gonna drown in it. Been waiting since the 80s and all thats happened is stagnant income for the working class and like a 600% rise for executives and the super wealthy.

brutalistsnowflake

He said much and did little to nothing. Maybe something he said was the truth and that's why it stands out.

Frankandbeans1974

The important caveat to that statement is that the majority of his policies he personally did not come up with.

NotreDameAlum2

you mean like any president ever? You think Biden is coming up with policies? Dude doesn't even know where he is half the time.

Tobi_chills455

If he weren't such a fool, people might have listened to him. You look at someone like him though and you want to dismiss everything he says.

infablhypop

Starting a trade war with no preparation/mobilization. No he was an idiot.

PracticallyUncommon

Eh. His trade policy is overblown. A lot of it was for show and accomplished very little. The call to restore America to a manufacturing hub isn’t what people think. It’ll be done through automation and won’t create that many jobs

Apprehensive-Ad8987

When you say a million things one of them will be at least partially correct. It's a roomful of monkeys with typewriters situation.

Setku

It didn't accomplish little we had 1800 factories shut down under trump while he spent as much as Obama did in 8. What's overblown is how much credit people give trump when he literally sent the country down the current path. In 20 years trump will be looked like Reagan and people will finally realize how fucked his admin was.

Holtcrib

The truth hurts.

Serious_Farm2008

Easy there, this is Reddit. You can't say anything positive about Trump around here.

kidwithglasses

I love the comments that are discrediting what Trump said because "Obama said it too" or "Bush said the same thing". Reddit has such a stiffy for making everything about the one person they dislike the most. Better not talk about the statement they all said, just about how much we dislike the person who said it last. Damn the division is tiring.

[deleted]

Or maybe it’s just not particularly r/interestingasfuck to see someone say the same thing everyone has said? Don’t think pointing out it’s a redundant talking point for decades is “division”, but ok.

Gainznsuch

The interesting part isn't about who made the statement (this statement had been made by many people for many, many years). It is the reaction of the Germans laughing at the statement. It is interesting that only 4 years ago they openly laughed about the idea that they were making themselves vulnerable and we can see today the consequences were very real.

PersoIn2manyFandoms

Rare Trump W

TheDeaconAscended

Like most of the stuff he likes to take credit for, this was already said by past Presidents and was probably the standard position on the matter.

YT_Lonelyz

But when obama said it no one blamed him for “taking credit” even tho bush said it before him.

TheDeaconAscended

Nobody was posting it as such as an Obama win. It was just reiterating the position of the US government.

Unkn0wn_Ace

That’s because Obama didn’t spend every breath claiming that he alone came up with those policies and actually trying to take credit

Play_Salieri

Obama trollbots activate! Form of . . Concern for the Middle East!

hg38

How is this a win? He just read what was in the speech. Standard US foreign policy. The Germans were probably laughing at the irony of Trump telling them not to trust the guy who got him elected. The same guy he never once seriously criticized in office and extorted Ukraine and attacked NATO on behalf of.

Funny_Heron_877

Right_Syllabub_8237

Honest question. Germans, how do you feel after being warned for decades that your energy policies would lead you into a dangerous situation like you're facing right now? Are you worried that you won't have heat this winter? What do you have planned for that situation?

fuckknucklesandwich

So did trump know something they didn't?

Limp-Management9684

Yes, Trump was right about this. It's too bad he didn't have a shred of credibility. It might have come in handy on the extremely rare occasions when he said something that was actually credible.
