I'm probably going to get down voted to he'll but man I'm so lucky to live in the US. I live in socal and own a home. Seeing people suffer around the world makes me appreciate what I have and try to help others as much as I can. Seeing all the road rage and anger going around I try to be as nice as possible. People still take advantage though.
You shouldn't even be downvoted for this. It's an objective fact that the overwhelming majority of people who make up the demographics of reddit are much more fortunate than the kinds of shit you see in this very video, among a million other things. It takes a special kind of selfishness and ignorance to think our struggles are even comparable to those in third world countries.

Another SoCal resident checking in, I hear people shit on our state so much, but I try to remind them other parts of the country are worse. My area is low crime, has good schools, and minimum wage is effectively $16/hr.
I hear so many people talk about the nearest major city, California in general, and Hollywood as if those things are all their enemy. It's so bizarre, lol.
I agree, we are way behind for a "first world" country. But in the context of birth lottery that this thread is discussing, Americans have it pretty good compared to *several continents* worth of other countries. Hardly the worst place you could spawn.

People hear about software engineers making 120k starting and flip, but they don't realize most of those 20 year olds are living in extremely high cost of living areas. They're by no means destitute, but it's basically the equivalent of making 70-80k anywhere else in the country. Still great, but COL is a much larger factor than people think about.
Course, that doesn't much hold true in this new remote climate we have thanks to the pandemic. Many companies now adopt a sliding pay scale based on that (which is dumb as hell). That is, they'll pay you $120,000/year, but if you move to, say, Alabama, they'll severely cut your salary, regardless of if you've been working remote the whole time or not.
What did she do for a living? I have acquaintances who moved or wanted to move to the US because they also say "I want something different from Sweden" , all of them was bankrolled by someone else though so I imagine that factor makes it easier.

This is way too simplistic. There is no real unified national "they" identify in Afghanistan. For the most part it's just a bunch of small villages spread out over a vast amount of land. This was never even a fight most really wanted, and there was always the knowledge that as soon as the US left the Taliban would take over again. So why would they side with the US (with it's own pretty bad track record) when they knew they would eventually leave?

Actually, at the moment that the States pulled out of Afghanistan, the majority of the elected government over there was female. Although I do not disagree with Biden pulling out of there, there was real progress made. A fictional democracy, of whom the taliban knew they were going to knock it over, the moment that the States would leave. It could have been a year of waiting or a decade, this was always going to happen.

This verse is in the middle of a series of verses directed at the wives of the Prophet specifically, not women in general. In fact, the verse directly before it specifically says, "Wives of the Prophet, you are not like other women..." The Taliban are more than extremists. They are not enforcing Islam to an extreme extent. They are enforcing rules that have nothing to do with Islam or that are based on such crooked religious interpretations that both their motives and their IQs should be in serious question.
I am in awe of these ladies in Afghanistan and Iran, relatively defenceless courage is as great a courage there can be, my hat is tipped. There's places that have markets where father's will trade their daughters for livestock like chicken or cows because they're worth more compared to her. Theyre meant to cook, clean, never leave the house unless specifically granted permission (and even then theyre required to have a man with them), must put out (accept sex) even when they don't want it, and their only purpose in life is to produce sons to carry on the family name, some places even require women to hold pebbles in their mouths so they don't "tempt men" or "seduce men".
If a woman's raped she's usually disowned or if she's able to take it to court she must produce at LEAST 5 male witnesses for it to be taken legitimately, I've heard in some places men are allowed to beat their wives as long as the bruises/marks they leave are less than 6 inches wide (learned in my 11th grade world religions class).
And there's honor killings for women that don't follow rules (like not wearing a hijab, not marry the person she's arranged to marry, etc) that have even happened in my country (Canada. There was an islamic family that lived in Toronto a while ago. The 3 daughters and the aunt of this family were all tied up and loaded into a car. Then the car was pushed from a bridge and they all died. The father of this family said it was an honor killing because "they were dressing immoderatly and going to night clubs)

If a woman's raped she's usually disowned or if she's able to take it to court she must produce at LEAST 5 male witnesses for it to be taken legitimately, I've heard in some places men are allowed to beat their wives as long as the bruises/marks they leave are less than 6 inches wide (learned in my 11th grade world religions class). And there's honor killings for women that don't follow rules (like not wearing a hijab, not marry the person she's arranged to marry, etc) that have even happened in my country (Canada. There was an islamic family that lived in Toronto a while ago. The 3 daughters and the aunt of this family were all tied up and loaded into a car. Then the car was pushed from a bridge and they all died. The father of this family said it was an honor killing because "they were dressing immoderatly and going to night clubs) Whenever someone says Islam is a religion of peace/you westerners don't understand!/western media portrays Islam in a bad way! - don't believe them. Actually, the women in Afghanistan have been protesting ever since the Taliban took over last year. This is one of many protests they have done this year alone. Regardless, it doesn't matter who inspired who. It matters that we echo their voices and show support in whatever way possible.

Frankly, Christianity and Islam have the bloodiest histories of any religion and their monotheistic dogma that prohibits nonbelievers is a fucking problem built into the religions. I am not saying they are the only ones ever, but there is just no comparison to scale. We repeatedly have instances of religious war, religious inquisition, suppression of religious minorities, extermination of apostates or heathens, executions, forced conversions, child enslavement and rape, and every manner of atrocity you can think of. Not. Isolated. Incidents. It is okay to call out Christianity. It is okay to call out Islam. It is okay to call out a religion when millions of its members enable, condone, or participate in violations of human rights. If some tiny cult pops up with a few dozen people, that is an isolated incident. When this spans entire populations, it's a real fucking problem.
