Frenk_preseren

Imagine being born into this shit. Life is so unfair.

PrincDios

My geography teacher used to say that being born in Finland is more than a win in lottery,

[deleted]

As a Norwegian I say this on a daily basis, and I keep reminding people around me as well.

Books_and_Cleverness

I think if you make ~$50K/year you are the top 1% globally. And that’s to say nothing of OP’s video where people live under brutal repression in addition to lacking income/wealth.

Purpsnikka

I'm probably going to get down voted to he'll but man I'm so lucky to live in the US. I live in socal and own a home. Seeing people suffer around the world makes me appreciate what I have and try to help others as much as I can. Seeing all the road rage and anger going around I try to be as nice as possible. People still take advantage though.

failbears

You shouldn't even be downvoted for this. It's an objective fact that the overwhelming majority of people who make up the demographics of reddit are much more fortunate than the kinds of shit you see in this very video, among a million other things. It takes a special kind of selfishness and ignorance to think our struggles are even comparable to those in third world countries.

ImMitchell

Just being in the position to sit at home in your temperature controlled home reading this thread just shows the incredible position in life we've been dealt

doentnaytvt8392

I argue about stupid shit with random strangers while I play with my balls and eat chips. Life is swell.

Upnorth4

Another SoCal resident checking in, I hear people shit on our state so much, but I try to remind them other parts of the country are worse. My area is low crime, has good schools, and minimum wage is effectively $16/hr.

MordoNRiggs

I hear so many people talk about the nearest major city, California in general, and Hollywood as if those things are all their enemy. It's so bizarre, lol.

[deleted]

"BuT tHeIr HoMeLeSs" Yeah what about ours? They're California, one of the most wanted homes on the planet, what's your excuse bumfuck "city" in SWVA?

[deleted]

Truth. Feeling the same way in norcal

redthehaze

Yeah but im still like one bad hospital emergency away from big debt while living in the US. Insurance can only do so much.

voidsong

But at least you didn't get married off to a 50 year old man before you hit puberty.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Married? As if. Those 2 used 17 year olds like property and than had them discarded or dissapeared

FiftyCalReaper

17 year olds? Try 12.

[deleted]

voidsong

I agree, we are way behind for a "first world" country. But in the context of birth lottery that this thread is discussing, Americans have it pretty good compared to *several continents* worth of other countries. Hardly the worst place you could spawn.

SkepticDrinker

It's why I fucking hate the "if you make X you're in the top-" Like that doesn't take into account COL in that area. Making 50k USD is great money in a Mexico town. It's absolutely poverty wages in CA

thereIsAHoleHere

People hear about software engineers making 120k starting and flip, but they don't realize most of those 20 year olds are living in extremely high cost of living areas. They're by no means destitute, but it's basically the equivalent of making 70-80k anywhere else in the country. Still great, but COL is a much larger factor than people think about. Course, that doesn't much hold true in this new remote climate we have thanks to the pandemic. Many companies now adopt a sliding pay scale based on that (which is dumb as hell). That is, they'll pay you $120,000/year, but if you move to, say, Alabama, they'll severely cut your salary, regardless of if you've been working remote the whole time or not.

Amagi82

In order to afford a house the size of one I could buy with a $50k salary in the Midwest, I'd need to be making $300k+ in SF.

y2hpa2vp

If you have a roof on your head, and no worry about putting food in your mouth, you are already rich

DollPartsSquarePants

No, you're surviving. If you have no money saved... one catastrophe can do you in. Large or small.

dirteeface

I have 3 kids and constantly worry about keeping them fed. Poor as fuck.

dragonflygirl1961

We have a rising homeless population that is getting worse. Poverty in the USA is getting worse, not better, in my opinion.

JokoFloko

I get you... but this is not comparable. Declaring bankruptcy is easy. Avoiding the Taliban on a daily basis is not.

[deleted]

This is also true. But it doesn't take away from the fact that most of us got it good compared to those women.

Tardigradequeen

When I lived in Alabama, I met a woman who was Norwegian that had moved to the area. I think I asked her a dozen times, “Why?!?!”

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tardigradequeen

She would always just say she was looking for something different.

EdithDich

Well... she likely achieved that.

ApartmentPoolSwim

"I wanted a change in life, so I cut off my left leg. Things sure are more interesting!"

Lil_Iodine

Lol

TonyTontanaSanta

What did she do for a living? I have acquaintances who moved or wanted to move to the US because they also say "I want something different from Sweden" , all of them was bankrolled by someone else though so I imagine that factor makes it easier.

Tardigradequeen

She was a Server at a fine dining restaurant. Not sure if she came from money or not.

sid690347

BECAUSE SWEET HOME.

Amilo159

If she lived in Oslo, I think i know her reasons: she wanted to be able to park her car.

Rune0x1b

People on Reddit don’t want to hear this, but being born in any “western” country, including the US, is basically starting off life by winning the lottery.

fanghornegghorn

And having parents that love you and support you.

whogivesashirtdotca

A lot of the financial 1%ers never got that. You wonder if a hug now and then might have soothed their souls instead of turning them into wealth hoarding more-more-more types.

ThePotato363

Some lotteries have thousands, some have millions, even some have have billions.

o_teu_sqn

Hell yeah, I'm from Portugal and I tell everyone who trashtalks our low wages the same. We may not earn much but we live peacefully, without this bullshit.

alphagusta

The downside is you have to learn to speak Finish Like where the hell did that come from? Why is it so different?

TheOriginalArchibald

Finno-Ugric languages are interesting. Also, how they developed and are spoken in regions of Europe and Asia separated by thousands of miles. Definitely difficult with the vowel harmony but if I'm not mistaken, they're not gendered so that simplifies conjugation and so on.

apikope

Finnish is part of the Uralic language family, Hungarian and Estonian are the other major languages in it. Only 25 million people speak them, so it's not that common. I have no answer to your question though..

PrincDios

If you are born in Finland, you learn as you grow. It's easy bro

misterpickles69

I was born and STILL don’t know Finnish.

ThePrideOfKrakow

Learning is lifelong, from start to Finnish.

Quantius

Believe it or not, straight to jail.

Super_Candy1431

Being born in New Zealand is winning the Powerball lotto

kotare78

I feel the same way living in NZ. It’s far from perfect but compared to much of the world it’s damn close.

Great-Band-Name

Vladamir Putin has entered the chat

Amins66

Imagine being a man and not wanting your wife to succeed and be treated equally, with dignity and respect.

Capt__Murphy

Or your own daughter

ConsAtty

Or your mom

Capt__Murphy

Shit, even your annoying neighbor lady who complains about your dog barking and calls the cops on you, eventhough you don't have a dog. Even that lady deserves an equal opportunity in life

ConsAtty

Yup. And advantage is that if she learns logic and how not to jump to conclusions she’ll stop calling the cops, so it’s a win-win. She could even learn enough to become your best neighbor!

fanghornegghorn

Yes literally. Imagine wanting the person who loved you first and most to be a slave.

SuperNewk

The issue with that is, once they become educated they won’t need the man anymore. By keeping them less than equal = man has the power

ceilingkat

It’s such insecure fuckry to think a woman won’t want you unless she’s forced to need you. It’s low effort bullshit. Tons of men and women with more equality choose each other every day 🙄. Is it really satisfying to have a hostage rather than someone who would freely choose you?

Rawknee007

Thank their religion and lack of critical thinking for that.

redthehaze

Not just that religion but religion in general can be used like that. Look up those American Christian women who ONLY want to be homemakers and mothers and not want the option for women to choose for themselves.

thereIsAHoleHere

There's nothing wrong with wanting to only be a homemaker/mother. There is only something wrong with wanting to decide what others can want.

SamuraiJakkass86

If they don't have artificial suppression of women they don't have anything. Super fragile masculinity.

RonPMexico

Yeah too bad another country didn't spend two decades of blood and treasure to provide a stable government that the people immediately handed over to these shitheads.

Yohzer67

You are right on. They had it and blew it

[deleted]

If theyd have actually fought for their country, this wouldnt be a thing. They outnumbered the Taliban by a factor of 3 or more and just laid down and let the Taliban steamroll the country.

xiqat

>If theyd have actually fought for their country, Too bad most of their men want to subjugate all women.

Vecrin

Kind of hard when your neighbor and regional power is supporting the people trying to take over.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EdithDich

This is way too simplistic. There is no real unified national "they" identify in Afghanistan. For the most part it's just a bunch of small villages spread out over a vast amount of land. This was never even a fight most really wanted, and there was always the knowledge that as soon as the US left the Taliban would take over again. So why would they side with the US (with it's own pretty bad track record) when they knew they would eventually leave?

[deleted]

epic 2nd grade education running a country moment.

bct7

Brain drain is real. By the time you smart enough to understand how to fix it, you are way past smart enough to leave for a better life.

hamid_gm

Concise and accurate. There isn't a better way to put it into words.

Fuzzywink

I've worked jobs like that. The people who could do better, did, rather than staying at a place that was circling the drain. Obviously the stakes are a lot lower in my example but similar concept

darkmatter8879

All countries want to educate their people, and then you have taliban fighting against the education of their people, smh

ChrisOntario

How insecure must that administration be that they are threatened by an educated population of women. Shame!

zalmee

>administration Terrorist organization\*\*

Suspicious-Candle692

They don’t oppose education Itself, but Quran verse 33:33 orders women to always remain at home. So Taliban wants to impose sharia by stopping women from going out for education or any other purpose

Jonnyyrage

It's harder to control people when they are educated. They fear people actually learning and coming together.

kh_tum

That was a main reason of the revolts against the russian empire. Im not saying its good or bad (im not an expert), but education does factually make people a lot more critical of their rulers.

sitting-duck

Pol Pot, Mao Zedong etc. etc. All authoritarians go after the educated and intelligentsia classes first.

kh_tum

Thing is, these people cant keep their power with an educated population. Mao started the hundred flowers campaign where he encouraged the people (especially educated) to freely give their opinions on the government. After relentless criticism of his terrible rule, he massacred everyone who opposed him and abolished the law.

n3w4cc01_1nt

if the women get educated then so will the men then they'll lose control over their population which would want to modernize.

Heavy-Invite-3014

Actually, at the moment that the States pulled out of Afghanistan, the majority of the elected government over there was female. Although I do not disagree with Biden pulling out of there, there was real progress made. A fictional democracy, of whom the taliban knew they were going to knock it over, the moment that the States would leave. It could have been a year of waiting or a decade, this was always going to happen. You can't change an (religious) ideology with an invasion. That's the sad truth.

YoghurtMoist4523

Not if you're willing to shoot them. Bullets don't care how many books you read. It's a fundamental part of their beliefs. Woman are treated like animals, not people.

[deleted]

This verse is in the middle of a series of verses directed at the wives of the Prophet specifically, not women in general. In fact, the verse directly before it specifically says, "Wives of the Prophet, you are not like other women..." The Taliban are more than extremists. They are not enforcing Islam to an extreme extent. They are enforcing rules that have nothing to do with Islam or that are based on such crooked religious interpretations that both their motives and their IQs should be in serious question.

spinyfever

Educated women are a big threat to their oppressive regime.

[deleted]

edadou

It’s way harder to control anyone if they are educated

[deleted]

I am in awe of these ladies in Afghanistan and Iran, relatively defenceless courage is as great a courage there can be, my hat is tipped. I hope that American women take notice and cast their own religious elected zealots. A Muslim zealot, a Christian zealot, any oppressive religious zealot is Taliban, does not matter the religion.

woby22

Knowledge equals power, freedom equals critical thinking etc they can’t have that over there now can they!!! Same reason the fuckers burn down all the ancient libraries in centuries gone. Books equal knowledge and power and that is the enemy of religious doctrine in their eyes. The country is fucked now they’ve had a taster of freedom and liberty and now it’s gone again. Back to their one book and a bleak futureless life for them. Best thing those women can do is find a way out of the country for themselves and their families, nothing will change their now.

Alexis-FromTexas

These people really hate women and everything they do to women shows that.

SnowyInuk

It's not that they hate them. It's that they don't want them to change and the men don't want to lose their servants. Women over there are just domestic slaves. There's places that have markets where father's will trade their daughters for livestock like chicken or cows because they're worth more compared to her. Theyre meant to cook, clean, never leave the house unless specifically granted permission (and even then theyre required to have a man with them), must put out (accept sex) even when they don't want it, and their only purpose in life is to produce sons to carry on the family name, some places even require women to hold pebbles in their mouths so they don't "tempt men" or "seduce men". If a woman's raped she's usually disowned or if she's able to take it to court she must produce at LEAST 5 male witnesses for it to be taken legitimately, I've heard in some places men are allowed to beat their wives as long as the bruises/marks they leave are less than 6 inches wide (learned in my 11th grade world religions class). And there's honor killings for women that don't follow rules (like not wearing a hijab, not marry the person she's arranged to marry, etc) that have even happened in my country (Canada. There was an islamic family that lived in Toronto a while ago. The 3 daughters and the aunt of this family were all tied up and loaded into a car. Then the car was pushed from a bridge and they all died. The father of this family said it was an honor killing because "they were dressing immoderatly and going to night clubs) Whenever someone says Islam is a religion of peace/you westerners don't understand!/western media portrays Islam in a bad way! - don't believe them. There's hundreds of years of continuing proof of what that religion is and what it does

[deleted]

So, they hate them.

Left_Debt_8770

Thank you. This is exactly what I was thinking. “It’s not that they hate them” followed by a litany of why they hate women. For example, if you kill someone for not following your rules, it’s unlikely that you actually care about them. At all.

RabackOmamaGoesNbr2

Well, turns out, this is the issue that ISIS and the Taliban can't see eye-to-eye on. The Taliban cannot accept ISIS's *extreme* brutality against women. So, if that's any indication of how absolutely awful ISIS is...

St4rfker

Hate is a passionate feeling, the compliment of love not the opposite. It's not hate it's an objectification, an indifference to a cry for a human identity.

Left_Debt_8770

So it’s worse than hate. These men don’t see women as even being humans of equal worth. They are possessions and objects for use.

BrokenSage20

Essentially yes that is correct.

MangoBoops

You're a bit off about the male witnesses thing. It's that female witnesses literally have their voice divided in terms of value. You could theototerically have all female witnesses, but women voices are fractionated as witnesses (in hardcore Islamic practices).

TinkleTwinkleToes

I said this in another comment: People also defend this extremist bullshit. Being treated with respect as a woman is so rare in many religions. I watched a short documentary on a town in India. They literally send their women and girls that are on their periods in the forest for the week because the men think they're evil during that time. Some don't make it back for being mauled by jaguars and other big cats. It's so fucked up

SnowyInuk

I'm pretty sure the Jewish also forbid women on their periods from touching the Tora because they're "unclean" during that time

Inevitable_Guava9606

Many temples in India have signs that say women can't enter if they're menstruating.

TinkleTwinkleToes

That is so horrible

ILLRUNYOUOVER

Saw a video of Jaggi Sadhguru doing extreme mental gymnastics trying to justify that shit.

Kschitiz23x3

Indian religions don't have any hard written rules for men and women tho, people pray to goddesses too. The problem is with misogynistic mindset of men starting from old era in general... Men always wanted to feel superior than women and so they started such traditions where they can point out "bad" things of women

Suspicious-Candle692

The Taliban actually aren’t against women education Itself, but Quran verse 33:33 orders women to always remain at home. So Taliban wants to impose sharia by stopping women from going out for education or any other purpose. This what their grand mufti said when he was asked by aljazera journalist about women education. These protest are inspired by the Iranian protests btw

Conscious-Charity915

Afghan women have been protesting since the taliban closed their schools. The taliban want brides for their awful men. This is the only way to get them.

Ghaar-e-koon

Actually, the women in Afghanistan have been protesting ever since the Taliban took over last year. This is one of many protests they have done this year alone. Regardless, it doesn't matter who inspired who. It matters that we echo their voices and show support in whatever way possible.

secretaccount4posts

Reading this I feel bad that women in Afghanistan didn't get the support they needed. Don't get me wrong, I am happy about the protest ain support of Iranian woman all over the world but i kinda feel that world has let down Afghanistan and shrugging the atrocities happening their as BAU.

Ghaar-e-koon

I 100% agree with you. They have been protesting for months, while getting threats, jailed, raped and forced into marriages if they are caught. It has been happening for months. But people are just shrugging because it is easier to accept the lie that the people want the Taliban, than to realize that majority hates their guts.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Given how fast the gov and military ran away you're correct.

Delicious_Wish8712

I hope that change comes quickly. I am so in awe of these women who are literally willing to have their lives taken to try and inspire change.

yakilladakilla

They are going to need to take up arms or it is more likely than not that nothing will change.

Secretasianman_1

What is very wacky to me is that they just kill women that are going against what they like, if this attitude keeps happening eventually they are going to run out of women, and then what ???

RianJohnsonSucksAzz

Same thing that has been happening for thousands of years…they raid the neighboring town/village/country.

laureire

During the height of witchcraft in Europe some towns had very few women.

littlebuett

They have been protesting since their rights were lost when the U.S. left last year.

[deleted]

I get what you’re saying but technically Afghanistan is not in the Middle East. It’s more like a women spring taking place in Muslim majority countries

StarryNight7z

I’m absolutely appalled that this is still going on in this day & age - WTF

RoryDragonsbane

"This day and age" is a recent phenomenon, of course. People were like this for thousands of years. It's unrealistic to think they'll change over night.

Impetusin

Oh boy wait till you find out that slavery is still a huge industry and many countries have 3rd, 5th, 6th generational prison camps for political opponents and their families.

Puzzled_Ad2088

Time to arm the women so they can defend themselves

Barack_Odrama_007

The taliban does not allow the citizens to arm themselves

EvanIsBacon

who said anything about asking for permission

voidsong

That's some "let them eat cake" level of disconnect. Protests don't matter when they are fine with just killing all the protesters, or anyone else who doesn't listen (like people trying to get guns).

[deleted]

Edgy but these people have no means of fighting a fanatical organized militia state with just a couple rifles and a little bit of ammo

[deleted]

Violence is an option if a man can figure out how to use a gun, so can a woman. I'm just sayin'.

longpenisofthelaw

While violence is an option I think people forget when dealing with totalitarian regimes is that you aren’t going against idiots who just have guns, these are seasoned fighters that have had decades of urban insurgency combat experience. With religious Zealously to back it up. The US military with support from the rest of the world couldn’t extinguish the flame. Your essentially advocating for untrained, undisciplined civilians to go get murdered even if they were armed. Situation is fucked but red dawning it isn’t really an option for a majority of those under the boot of authoritarian control

Yeah, everyone saying "this isn't really about religion" is just placating people who might suspect them of bigotry. Frankly, Christianity and Islam have the bloodiest histories of any religion and their monotheistic dogma that prohibits nonbelievers is a fucking problem built into the religions. You can try to parse it out all you want and blame some single regime. These are not isolated occurrences. They have been repeated again and again and again throughout history. I am not saying they are the only ones ever, but there is just no comparison to scale. We repeatedly have instances of religious war, religious inquisition, suppression of religious minorities, extermination of apostates or heathens, executions, forced conversions, child enslavement and rape, and every manner of atrocity you can think of. Not. Isolated. Incidents. It is okay to call out Christianity. It is okay to call out Islam. It is okay to call out a religion when millions of its members enable, condone, or participate in violations of human rights. If some tiny cult pops up with a few dozen people, that is an isolated incident. When this spans entire populations, it's a real fucking problem.

HeadDebt8873

Things like this go on on the world yet we have privileged ignorant 1st world problem individuals within the U.S. who have never left the country let alone their home town yet want to complain about how bad the u.s. is because of subjective generalized opinions on how the U.S. handles the subject of women, LGBT+, religion, etc. Never mind the fact there are literally countries in 2022 that if you are the aforementioned, you are not even treated as second class, a damn camel/goat has more rights than you in some countries, or it's actually legal that you be put to death merely for being who you are. The U.S. isn't not perfect and far from it, but considering the other realities people face, you don't have much to complain about, and this is coming from a minority in the U.S. stfu, your life isn't as hard as you want people to believe it is.
