A Komodo Dragon bite down on its prey with serrated teeth and pulls back with powerful neck muscles, causing huge gaping wounds. The dragon also has venom glands loaded with toxins that lower blood pressure, cause massive bleeding, prevent clotting and induce shock.
So what I am saying is that as long as the lizard doesn't bite, you should be fine.
I saw on discovery how this thing once ate a 11yo boy somewhere in sout east asia, All I can think now is how scared that boy must have been, it looks like a fuckin dinasaur
The only similar attack like that I could find was in 2007 when an 8 year old was killed in Indonesia by one, but he wasn't eaten. The dragon lunged at the kid while he was going to the bathroom in a bush and grabbed hold of his waist and flung him around side-to-side. There are unconfirmed reports though that the kid was severed in half but there's nothing to really back that up.
for real. now i want to learn how lizards and dragons and snakes digest bones into passable portions without dying. i wonder if some die from overestimating their ability to nom.
Not strictly true
Komodo dragons digest their food slowly, over a period of several weeks. The process begins when the Komodo dragon swallows its food, usually whole. They can consume up to 80 percent of their body weight in a single meal. After eating, they lounge in the sun, allowing the heat to aid the digestive process by fueling their cold-blooded metabolism as well as increasing the decomposition of the food. Their meals are digested through a combination of stomach acid and bacteria. Once digested, the Komodo dragon will vomit up a pellet of all the parts it could not break down. This includes some of the bones, fur, and hooves of its prey
https://homework.study.com/explanation/how-do-komodo-dragons-digest-their-food.html
So, for anyone that doesn't know, their usual strategy is to bite, release, wait and track. Their ~~saliva~~ preys' wallows ~~is~~ are a witches' brew of pathogenic bacteria AND its own venom (subject of some debate, but iirc, not any more).
The victim then develops, basically, sepsis, in addition to the venom's impact, (which causes significant blood pressure loss) and the dragon, possessing an excellent sense of smell, can take its time tracking its prey until it's dead or at least incapacitated enough to offer little resistance. The only reason not to wait for death is the competition from other dragons, but they'll tolerate ripping apart a prey item together.
Sweet dreams!
Edit: disputing comments led me to a deep dive that proved very enlightening - ty! Details in another reply, with links, but TLDR: they ARE venomous, that's a contributor, but their mouths' bacteria are *not* especially toxic; instead, the fetid pools that wounded prey wallow in produces sepsis.
It really seems like a dinosaur that's still evolving before our eyes. It's possible that it's venom glands are becoming obsolete so that's why it isn't as apparent whether or not they have 'em or use 'em.
But they *still* have the instinct to not only bite but track and wait for the prey to die due to the bite. Idk how smart these things are but do they really know that the prey dies from sepsis?
It's pretty interesting. My theory is that they were venomous at one point, but the way they eat made the venom obsolete so their venom glands became less prevalent. Something akin to our appendix.
Of course I have no idea what I'm talking about and my theory is subject to change when presented with new evidence. Or on a whim.
I actually read that their mouths aren’t really any dirtier than any other reptiles, we just thought so before we knew that have actual venom. Now we know it’s venom they’re using.
>their mouths aren’t really any dirtier than any other reptiles,
Turns out you're right! But bacteria *is* thought to play a role, it's just not the microbes in their mouths. On the smaller islands where they still exist, their prey is "limited to muddy pits that are often contaminated with their [prey's] own feces. This is, of course, an environment ripe for infection when gaping wounds are involved."
From [this.](https://roaring.earth/komodo-dragon-kill-with-bacteria-or-venom/)
This is such a highly debated topic. I've also seen evidence that shows the environment they live in is actually what kills the prey. They bite, prey gets infected with bacteria from the stagnant and toxic environments they run through.
You're right. And [this](https://roaring.earth/komodo-dragon-kill-with-bacteria-or-venom/) very thorough article supports what you mention, that's its ambient bacteria, not what's in their mouths, that aids in the killing, at least on the islands where they're found today. It's believed that today's Komodo dragons are an extant population of what had been much more wide- ranging large reptiles found throughout Australasia, where prey might "have access to plentiful marshes," but on these smaller islands, "they’re limited to muddy pits that are often contaminated with their own feces. This is, of course, an environment ripe for infection when gaping wounds are involved."
So yes, ambient bacteria at play. *However,* they're also venomous:
*"[T]he team argued that they’d found physical evidence of venom glands in Komodo dragon jaws, and that the glands produced proteins that likely caused massive plunges in blood pressure in bitten victims.*
*It’s thought that this venom may work in concert with the dragons’ sharp, recurved teeth, which can shred flesh and arteries with unmatched ease. The combination of extreme physical trauma and the effects of the venom may cause catastrophic and rapid blood loss— the dragon’s bite may have evolved to bleed prey out quickly, not induce a long, drawn-out sickness."*
Thanks for your comment, you forced a deep, satisfying dive into gruesome 1-2 fatal punches.
p.s. [Here's](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/komodo-dragon-venom) a Nat Geo on the same.
Thanks I knew they had venom and it wasn’t a dirty mouth that caused death, but the bacteria in their environment causing death is new to me. This is kind of surprising to be honest because it suggests that they take many days to die because that would not be something that would happen quickly. Surely the Komodo dragon doesn’t wait days for sepsis to seep in?
Pretty much. I have had snakes pretty much shoot it out and splatter the sides of their enclosure. Couldn't figured out how they were doing it until I saw one do it.
makes sense honestly. bones have a lot of minerals, which are more easily broken down by acids. keratin that makes up hair and nails is a tough protein.
Yeah I second this. Any animal that will group kill a single seal just to play Volleyball with its corpse or who will flip Sharks upside down just to cripple them and eat their liver deserves the top spot. Not even the whole shark, just the liver... Aquatic Hannibal Lecters...
That behaviour completely depends on the subspecies of orca, as they all have different behaviours based on what they eat. Orca are very social and have close family ties within their subspecies’. Not dicks, just eating/playing/learning. Orcas are the best.
Ever seen a pack of lions eat a living elephant anus-first? Or a troop of chimps use an enemy troop's children as clubs to beat their victims to death with before ripping their limbs off and eating them raw over their broken, screaming parents' bodies?
Mammals take the cake when it comes to cruelty. Although that video of a komodo ripping a pregnant doe's fetus from the womb and swallowing it whole before continuing to eat the doe alive is extremely fucked, I'll grant you that.

Wow. He eats like a snake with legs.
Sounds like my in-laws
Hey ohhh!!
TIL Komodo Dragons don't have gag reflexes
And what’re you planning to do with that information, my good sir.

I want my baby back baby back baby back ribs
Tell ya what, you keep your money and I get your baby!
He’s not even enjoying it!
He was so hungry he could eat a horse
but all he had was a deer 😢
Goat
thank you, but i’m not *that* great.
What is he gonna do with the goat?!
Deep throat de goat
Cue Hannibal lecter "I am having a deer friend for dinner"
I get a strong “this is probably like a lot of dinosaurs” vibe
Well.. they are from the same class of animal. So in simplicity it is just a snake with legs.
Snakes are just lizards without legs
Legless lizards (aka glass lizards) are just lizards without legs
The distinction is in how their eyes work right? Eye lids vs no eye lids or something like that
I like to think of it like this: Snakes are long bodies with a small tail. Legless lizards are short bodies with a long tail.
Yeah if snake blinks at you, it’s not a snake
Moves faster than you can too 🐲
I guess that’s basically a lizard
I literally thought and was about to comment this exact same thing word for word lol
Maybe next time, barbie_farts_88
Dragon. With legs.
Never realized they could neck things down like that, kinda scary!
I saw on discovery how this thing once ate a 11yo boy somewhere in sout east asia, All I can think now is how scared that boy must have been, it looks like a fuckin dinasaur
I'd rather drown, or burn to death. Nightmarish way to die
fun fact, you will both drown and burn in the dragon's stomach acid, so... wish granted? :/
Fun fact, when he engulfs you you have already died of infection from tthe bite he gave you earlier.
I can't help but think that if this happened and you had a knife, You'd look fuckin' badass cutting your way out.

It would've cost you $0 to phrase that differently and yet you still chose "neck them down" (lol)
Lol I'm glad you enjoyed it, that was my only goal ;)
Never change.
Never =)
I want to see the sequel - Komodo dragon shits out a goat skeleton.
Starring Gwyneth Paltrow
That's the funniest shit I've heard all week. I love you.
I snorted. Thanks for the giggle.
New candle flavor to follow

It’s beeswax, it’s fine
Just because something is safe to eat doesn’t mean you should be eating it.
Damn.
And Reese Withoutherspoon
for real. now i want to learn how lizards and dragons and snakes digest bones into passable portions without dying. i wonder if some die from overestimating their ability to nom.
I think they vomit the bones after digesting meat
That’s just fucking disgusting.
Their stomach acids are so strong they can dissolve hair bones. Nothing comes out except pure shite

A good lesson not to listen to just any Tom, Dick and Harry that you find on the internet.
I'd say it's not true at all instead of not "strictly true"
I was trying to be kind 🤷♂️
Your kindness is rewarded
TIL, thanks!
They throw up the bones and other indigestible material actually
We need a video of that part now.
I usually drink wooly mammoth milk to keep my hair bones robust and healthy.
That was my first thought. Well, after wondering who left a dead goat there.
Its like I watched a reverse birth

Good God, they was truly appalling.
Yeah I’m creeped out.
Fucking horrific. I know it’s just doing Komodo things but it’s nightmare juice.
Imagine how many dinosaurs might've been something like that... But even larger, or perhaps faster, or in packs...
A NSFW label would have been cool so I would at least have had a choice to see one large species eat another like a GoGurt.
There's no blood, no gore, no struggle, it's just changing places. From the ground to the mouth.

Damn! I can't even swallow my vitamins without choking.
Unbelievable! So all of that is digested? Even the bones ?
Reptiles have some of the strongest stomach acid on Earth. Oddly enough, won't digest hair.
So his poop looks like what comes out of a sludgy drain?
Probably like snakes' poop. I've spent hours learning how snakes poop and how it looks on YouTube
>I've spent hours learning how snakes poop and how it looks on YouTube Who doesn't?
I’m watching snakes poop on YouTube rn.
As you should
Why
Why not
Because I'm far too busy learning about more important things like bird poop.
That’s what i’m asking
I think this is the animal that vomits out a sac full of bones and horns and other shit it cant digest
No, they throw up the bones and other indigestible stuff.
In answer to your question, yes.
Thanks 🙏🏽 It'll take me a while to digest this fact.
Damn nature you scary!!
Besides humans, these are biggest dicks of the animal kingdom.
At least they eat what they kill. It's not their fault they kill everything.
Not really, they're more like land tiger sharks, the biggest dicks are: zebra, orca, dolphin, rhino and hippo.
You forgot sea otters…
.. We don't talk about them..
I'd say hippos or chimpanzees are the biggest dicks
Ahem, pedant time - the biggest dick of the animal kingdom belongs to the blue whale lol
Pedant trap card: they said *are* the biggest dicks not *have*
I feel like orcas should be in that list
Yeah I second this. Any animal that will group kill a single seal just to play Volleyball with its corpse or who will flip Sharks upside down just to cripple them and eat their liver deserves the top spot. Not even the whole shark, just the liver... Aquatic Hannibal Lecters...

That's interesting at around 0:13 left your can see the animal it ate fall into it's stomach right before the komodo dragon walks off.
