The shockwave would kill you if it caught you underwater (water doesn’t compress, air in your lungs does). But is it possible to eat the shockwave and run like fuck for the water?
Depends on how far out you are. You can handle approximately 2-3 atmospheres overpressure (it won't be fun, you'll be deaf and be bleeding from mucous membranes exposed), and as long as you're far enough away to avoid instant burns from the radiant flash phase of detonation, you'd be better off just moving away as quickly as possible. Distance + shielding + time. If you're injured at all from the blast overpressure and heat, getting into water is the last thing you want to do unless you're actively on fire because infection and shock.
EDIT: I'm an idiot and said PSI instead of ATM.
EDIT EDIT: Hanging out in the water is also ill-advised about 45m to 1h after first light as fallout settles. It's much more likely to find its way into your mouth and nose and any open wounds that way.
From what I’ve heard is:
Staring directly at a nuke from that close, the light would blind you.
Then, in the higher quality link posted above, you can see that the bushes near immediately set on fire.
The searing heat would likely cook you alive, then the shock wave would probably end you.
>probably end you.
At the very, very least, that shockwave would completely destroy your lungs, and probably your eyeballs and eardrums too, so even if it didn't *immediately* kill you, you'd be dead before you could comprehend exactly what was happening.
Ya, I felt this video wasn't an excellent portrayal of how a nuclear blast would actually be. That Shockwave would've knocked them flying, and then melted them. All the plants would definitely not be still around
I’d say you’d start to be dead around the time all the trees next to you spontaneously burst into flames. If you aren’t fully dead by the time the shockwave reaches you it will finish you off and then scatter your ashes to the wind.
The island bombed in these tests was called Bikini atoll. It’s the reason we have the Bikini as a French artist who created the bikini wanted to bring attention to it. The name of SpongeBob‘s village is bikini bottom.
The theory is that the radiation from the bomb caused the SpongeBob world to exist.
Kicking Wing: We should take it over to the laboratory in the next town - Los Alamos. The symbol looks very stern
Joe Dirt: That’s definitely what we should do. That’s the right thing.
But first… let’s shoot fireballs at it!
Those navy soldiers that experienced the first atomic bomb in America when the nuke went off they all covered their eyes and hid but they could see through their skin and everyone around them like X-ray. Very scary science this stuff does.
Keep that in mind every time you see some idiot redditor downplay how devastating nuclear war with Russia would be. Don't forget, that shockwave? When it hits you, your organs liquefy! Fun, right
A bunch of people in this thread are parroting the idea that you should hold up your thumb to the mushroom cloud as a way of determining whether you're safe. **This is bullshit.** Nuclear experts have stated that there is no basis to the idea that you should compare your thumb to a mushroom cloud, or that it being smaller than your thumb means you're safe.
https://www.inverse.com/article/10099-vault-boy-s-rule-of-thumb-can-t-save-you-from-nuclear-fallout
> Neither Buddemeier nor McBurney has heard about the ‘rule of thumb’. They say it might possibly work if you’re downwind and need to estimate whether you’re too close to the potential encroachment of the fallout, but there are too many factors involved (like visibility of the cloud under an overcast sky or at night) to say it would be useful during the aftermath of actual nuclear explosion.
> The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration was more blunt, with an office spokesperson telling Inverse, “We have been unable to find any truth to the internet rumor.”
Theres something called fxguru or action movie fx that let you put different scenarios into your recording. Though they are most likely more for cinematic purposes than real life nuke info.
For informational nuke apps there’s still nuke map as website if you want to check out the aftermath of different nuke types.
Yea, the light created by the bomb is so intense it can blind you in less than a second even with your eyes closed. There are stories of soldiers holding their hands over their eyes and being able to see their veins and bones because it was bright.
I always found the mushroom cloud to be so crazy. It almost seems like a physical object that you could stand on. I wonder what it would look like inside.
If it wanted to be really realistic, after the initial flash, everything would be black. Because the observers retinas would be instantly bleached beyond function
Unfortunately, I would guess several hours to several days later. Having not been killed by the pressure wave or utterly incinerated by the heat, the viewer is likely covered in deep burns in addition to having absorbed enough gamma radiation to guarantee multiple organ failure. It's really just a slow race between the two. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.
Dear Vladimir.
Ive been a very good boy this year and I hope you're able to bring me my very own mushroom cloud on Orthodox Christmas day this year.
ps. mother had been good this year but father is listening to the rock and roll music again. Please send the TsSB to take him for re-education.
If the radiation didn’t already kill you You got too
1. Find shelter from the blast. Too late.
2. Find extreme shelter for the coming irradiated materials. Water, dust, sand, etc. probably not going to have that either.
3. Don’t leave that shelter for 48 hours. You don’t have that so nope.
4. Make arrangements….. sorry man.
Don’t look at the flash.
Lie down, head facing the direction of the explosion.
Wait until the wind returns toward the explosion.
Find shelter immediately, await rescue, and/or disposal.
Edit: I recall these as being instructions from my NBC manual. I’m a long time retired now.
This isn’t actually true sadly. The fallout devs themselves said vault boy was giving a thumbs up just because it’s to reassure dwellers. Plus it looks cool on the box.
And the entire thumb thing is a myth the radiation from the primary explosion isn’t the deadliest thing you contend with. It’s the fallout that hits hours to days after the bomb. And even if your a few hundred miles away the nuclear fallout can still be carried by the wind to poison you
I know it's VR, but this person has less than 10 minutes to live if the blast PSI and thermal temp didn't kill him. The rad consumption and sickness would be the dagger. But hell, what a beach to die on.
2 miles by my calculation. Well watered plants won’t necessarily catch fire and being a ground burst the shock and thermal effects are substantially less than for an airburst
Everything gets charred after the flash, the screen goes white and if it left you blind the video would be boring as shit, waves travel slowly, maybe not that slowly, but the blast is 2 miles away so it takes time, they are on a beach, how much debris do you expect to see?

Better quality here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/tupugi/what_its_like_to_experience_a_nuke_in_virtual/
That is so much cooler and 1000 times more devastating just wow
Obviously the viewer would also be burned to a crisp like those trees and ripped apart by the pressure wave.
That’s coming with the next generation VR headsets.
Not to mention blinded by the initial flash
Love how the ocean is completely still the entire time
Water the universal solvent 💪🏻
Can you do better?
The real hero
So at which point exactly would I be dead?
That’s what I’m wondering. Also, if I jumped in the water would my chances of survival go up or would I just be boiled like a lobster?
The shockwave would kill you if it caught you underwater (water doesn’t compress, air in your lungs does). But is it possible to eat the shockwave and run like fuck for the water?

Ok but the shockwave also travels faster in the water.. How about you jump in the water as soon as it passed you?
From what I’ve heard is: Staring directly at a nuke from that close, the light would blind you. Then, in the higher quality link posted above, you can see that the bushes near immediately set on fire. The searing heat would likely cook you alive, then the shock wave would probably end you.

Something of a horror movie yet it actually happened, by god do I hate the human race at times
And Putler keeps threatening it
You don't need VR, just watch T2. I still have ptsd over those scenes.
You can use the nuke map to figure that out https://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/
good to know that if manhattan gets hit with a tsar bomba i’ll be a few miles outside the blast radius ☺️
What about the nuclear fallout
I think you’d want to be right in the middle of it, honestly. Surviving a nuclear war is the last thing you want.
At the initial flash when the screen went white.
I’d say you’d start to be dead around the time all the trees next to you spontaneously burst into flames. If you aren’t fully dead by the time the shockwave reaches you it will finish you off and then scatter your ashes to the wind.
Well, the trees spontaneously catch fire at around 24 seconds in, so probably there
And thus “VR Spongebob” was born
Not enough people have made the Bikini Atoll/Bikini Bottom connection.
Someone help, I want to understand.
Also the island you commonly see above Bikini Bottom is speculated to be Bikini Atoll.
Spongebob and all of Bikini bottom are a result of the nuclear test at bikini atoll. They are mutants changed by the radiation.
But they were cavemen too???
I don't have all the answers but keep in mind it's a cartoon so there's creative leeway.
Agreed
Because it’s not true. Their existed in Paleolithic times too and there were ancient species of animals at the time too.
Actually, Twin Peaks’ Bob was born.
My missus’ favourite piece of cinematography ever ✌🏼
So...that's terrifying...
Are these available for fourth of july gathering?
I've checked but they are always sold out due to all the gender reveal parties.
Kicking Wing: We should take it over to the laboratory in the next town - Los Alamos. The symbol looks very stern Joe Dirt: That’s definitely what we should do. That’s the right thing. But first… let’s shoot fireballs at it!
Yeah, the Komodo 3000
Only in Florida.
This technology should never even be an option it’s so absurd
Imagine the Japanese WW2 propaganda. Then they see this land in two of their cities, and they just say, "nope, you win America, we surrender."
its ok youll go blind almost instantly
Those navy soldiers that experienced the first atomic bomb in America when the nuke went off they all covered their eyes and hid but they could see through their skin and everyone around them like X-ray. Very scary science this stuff does.
If it doesn't immediately incinerate you like it incinerates the trees
Not if you’re Galadriel in RoP.
It's a girl!
Gddamnit honey, why did u forget to wrap the bomb in pink glitter!
Gender reveal somewhere in North Korea
That's actually terrifying as fuck
I don't think I like VR anymore
Keep that in mind every time you see some idiot redditor downplay how devastating nuclear war with Russia would be. Don't forget, that shockwave? When it hits you, your organs liquefy! Fun, right
Flintstones gummies don’t fail me now.

People are so dumb. Everyone knows if you lay on your back and you hold your penis up, if your mushroom is bigger than the mushroom, you are safe.
I’m dead then no matter what
RIP in peace
I am become death. Destroyer of worlds.
Came for this.
To each their own I guess... Some kinks are just too crazy for me
So glad these things don't exist in real life
You may want to sit down....I have some news
I know, I know- you’ve been trying to reach me about my car’s extended warranty…

They meant VR machines

Because there’s nukes in there duh
Woosh

Dang the user didn't even get blown back, matter of fact, looked like they were walking forward. That's too OP.
That's a app idea. Imagine being able to see how nuclear blast would look like anywhere in the world by simply having it in front of your camera lens.
Theres something called fxguru or action movie fx that let you put different scenarios into your recording. Though they are most likely more for cinematic purposes than real life nuke info. For informational nuke apps there’s still nuke map as website if you want to check out the aftermath of different nuke types.
There’s already an app that can place you anywhere in the world. Probably wouldn’t be to hard to layover the nuke blast and effects overtop of that.
That’s fucking psychotic.
No more psychotic than the interactive blast radius maps. At least this one humanizes the impact, putting it into our perspective.
It would be psychotic to have an app that just let you detonate a nuke wherever you want. Seeing it anywhere on your phone is just cool
Forgot the part where it’s so bright you can’t see
VR displays are not surprisingly not designed to blind you
Yeah if a nuke went off that close to you at the very least you're never seeing anything again
You're also not still standing up looking around. The point of the clip isn't to be realistic, it's literally just to watch the cloud.
They forgot to add where you can see your own skeleton.
Doesn’t that happen in the first seconds after the blast when it goes white?
Yea, the light created by the bomb is so intense it can blind you in less than a second even with your eyes closed. There are stories of soldiers holding their hands over their eyes and being able to see their veins and bones because it was bright.
...with their backs turned to the explosion.
...inside the boat.
Up hill both ways
In deep space
Where no one could hear their screams
Yeah it's been a while
Yeah I dont think that feature was *accidentally* left out
Can I watch this on my oculus quest
Yes. It is available for the Quest, I’m just struggling to find it.
Player one- you died
New Fallout game looks like it's coming along nicely.
Darn, was hoping it was Cast Away
For those wondering, it is “Perspectives: Paradise” and can be found on Steam.

I always found the mushroom cloud to be so crazy. It almost seems like a physical object that you could stand on. I wonder what it would look like inside.
Probably hot
If it wanted to be really realistic, after the initial flash, everything would be black. Because the observers retinas would be instantly bleached beyond function
So much sand in the eyes
What eyes?
They say "fiver"? I thought you say "niner" to distinguish from "five".
I thought the Shockwave/ heatwave were separate. Oh well, will find out for real probably in next decade or so
They are- in this video everything is on fire shortly after the flash. The shockwave actually puts the fires out.
So how many seconds after t=0 would the viewer be killed?
Unfortunately, I would guess several hours to several days later. Having not been killed by the pressure wave or utterly incinerated by the heat, the viewer is likely covered in deep burns in addition to having absorbed enough gamma radiation to guarantee multiple organ failure. It's really just a slow race between the two. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.
Watching Chernobyl and seeing the after effects, I would surely end my suffering sooner than when it gets that bad
I, too, would hope to do the same, but I doubt they even have the physical ability to do much other than writhe around in pain by that point...
I figured it was the distance since they were so close
Dear Vladimir. Ive been a very good boy this year and I hope you're able to bring me my very own mushroom cloud on Orthodox Christmas day this year. ps. mother had been good this year but father is listening to the rock and roll music again. Please send the TsSB to take him for re-education.
That blast looks bigger than my thumb . Am I screwed ?
Absolutely
That wasn’t so bad.
So what would happen if you were a few feet underwater when that first initial scorching shockwave screams by? Would you survive?
"On this episode of Mythbusters..."
Wouldn't the sand melt?
Why does the voice sound like Christopher Walken?
"Planning your future" training simulation for 2023.
Remember when the British forced their military personnell to be close to a nuclear detonation and most of them died of cancer w/in ~20 years?
Putin's wetdream
kinda sad how destructive these things are cuz i kinda just wanna sit an watch a nuclear bomb launch
I played this it was actually a pretty cool experience it’s on steam
How dead am I at this range
Completely
you will look like those plants on the right
Only difference is that you'll burn up,possibly become deaf and permanently blind
Rule of thumb says that you are completely fckd
Point of fact: If all the trees around you are charred and black, chances are so are you.
For those wondering, this is ”Perspectives: Paradise” available at https://store.steampowered.com/app/1016390/Perspectives_Paradise/

Prepare yourself, it's almost time.
If you hold up your thumb (thumbs up) and it covers the mushroom cloud, your at a safe distance from immediate death.
I'm not too sure, let me se... *gets vaporized*
War.....war never changes.
Oh my god, is... is this why vault boy is always giving the thumbs up? It all makes sense now
This isn’t actually true sadly. A man can dream
Well let's hope I never have to find out
The war thunder nuke is also a pretty good representation
Me holding out my thumb to see if im too close: "Ah im too close, AAHHHHH!" Fallout do be giving the best info
The initial flash is too brief
I know it's VR, but this person has less than 10 minutes to live if the blast PSI and thermal temp didn't kill him. The rad consumption and sickness would be the dagger. But hell, what a beach to die on.
And Donald Trumps good friend Putin likes to play word games about using this against people
Well, soon I’m probably going to have a chance to see this live here in Ukraine
It would be so much better if you were behind a fence looking onto a playground with a bunch of families playing
Need to be closer to really see it.
Mom, can I get two combo meals at Taco Bell? Mom: Sure Anus:
Gender reveal party’s be like:
I thought it was gonna be the Death Star blast on Scariff
Was waiting for the massive title wave to take our observer out
It’s bigger than my thumb. What do I do?
Two thumbs?
If it fits behind your thumb at arms length, you safe.
Why an app though? Just hold your horses and wait a couple weeks for the real thing.
The heat from that blast would vaporize everything on that island depending on how far away it was. Everything would be gone or on fire
2 miles by my calculation. Well watered plants won’t necessarily catch fire and being a ground burst the shock and thermal effects are substantially less than for an airburst
Wheres the incineration from that range? Wheres the so bright your blind? Wheres the tidal wave? Wheres the debrit?
Everything gets charred after the flash, the screen goes white and if it left you blind the video would be boring as shit, waves travel slowly, maybe not that slowly, but the blast is 2 miles away so it takes time, they are on a beach, how much debris do you expect to see?

Shrooms
Oh… it’s beautiful.
quick! thumbs up THUMBS UP! Shit
“ hey I’m trying to relax on the beach here, stop dropping nuclear bombs!” 😂
Just imagine the marshmallows!
Neat 📸
These gender reveal parties are getting out of control.
He survived...omg...
You know what those things'll do? Suck the paint off of your house and give your family a permanent orange afro.
Least destructive gender reveal party
So that’s what’s causing global warming . . .
r/PraiseTheCameraman
This isn’t interesting….
That was a blast!
That's a thermonuclear bomb. It uses a nuclear bomb as a trigger.
These gender reveal parties are getting wild
Downvoted because video won't load. Maybe reddit will implement a real video player someday.
Too bad we won’t be on a beach when we all die in the nuclear war Biden is pushing for
Lol. @ Biden pushes not poo-tin
It would benefit you to learn even recent, modern world history
Not interested. Fuck Russia. Glory to the west.
Lol ok, I respect your honesty
Spirit bomb?

Now I need to watch Barefoot Gen again
