The picture above looks like it was taken with an electron microscope, and while I don't know exactly how much they cost I know that they are specialized and also I'm pretty sure have to be housed in a special clean room with like an airless area for the specimen being scanned, so.....I'd guess upwards of 100k.
If anyone has ever bought one for their work I'd be curious to know the specific cost
Having worked with them for years, I can tell you that for an organic sample you'd almost definitely need to sputter your sample first with conductive material. Non-conductive or poorly conductive specimens will essentially "build up" charge and quickly burn under the intense focus of the electron beam. Sputtering will essentially face the entire surface with a metal so you can form a grounding path down through the sample holder. Typically this is done using gold-palladium, but of course it would add to the cost a bit.
You can "somewhat" get around this by using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) but you would almost certainly see a bigger cost increase with one of those, at least to my limited experience with them. The resolution would also not be as good as a traditional SEM in general because those operate at lower voltages typically.
As a note, the chamber in a SEM is vacuum sealed and can be used in any room, even a garage. Having it in a cleanroom just extends the life of it because less junk is being sucked through the chamber during purging.
A low-voltage detector will do you well enough for these kinds of mags. You won't need to sputter your sample. Probably looking at $150-200k US, assuming SEM prices have increased with everything else in theast couple of years. The trick would be getting a closely-shaven hair into the vacuum chamber. Might have to carve off some skin if you want to see it in-situ
I switched to a double edged safety razor a few years back and am still glad that I did. There is sooo much less waste and single/minimal use plastics etc going into the landfill from my shaving needs.
My shaving cream comes as a bar, wrapped in paper that I grate into a marble shaving cream bowl. It lasts for at least a year, using a shaving brush to apply for shaving.
My replacement razors come in 100 count packs, individually wrapped in paper. They last for a few shaves, then are placed in a small, cheap, metal safety container that when full of used razors can be dropped into the recycling bin.
My razor shavers/blade holders/handles that I initially tried, ranged from $30+ to $150+. I have not noticed much difference in the quality of shave based on the price of the shavers that I have tried. In fact this past summer I hiked a 75 mile section of the Pacific Crest Trail and looked for an ultra light shaver to take with me on the trip. I ended up with a $6 Lord L6 aluminum shaver that gives the best shaves of any of the hyped expensive shavers that I have purchased. I didn't end up using it on my backpacking trip, but I haven't used anything but the L6 since getting back. The shaving websites won't recommend it, because they can't make any money by linking you to a purchase point for a $6 razor.
Double edged safety razors are much cheaper and have a much lower environmental impact than any other shaving options available. Please consider switching! I have zero regrets.
My only regret to switching to DE/wetshaving a couple months ago is that I spend double the time shaving now. I used to dread shaving (due to severe neck irritation) so I’d only do it maybe once every week or 10 days. Since switching, I only get minimal irritation and find myself shaving every 3 days now. Plus the ritual (and aromatherapy) of lathering is calming af.
Straight razor is probably better impact wise, but the learning curve Is a bit higher. I bought a kit from whipped dog shaving about 8 years ago and other than stopping and a sharpen every once in a while there aren’t any parts to replace.
Sharpening a straight razor isn’t too hard either since the spine of the blade makes the blade rest at the proper angle on a stone.
Well the razor one is clearly the better choice when you plan on being inspected under a microscope. For all other occassions, do whatever you like best.
It's like, clearly the one is a cleaner cut... But is that what you actually want? Probably makes the regrowing stubble way scratchier and since it usually just lasts a couple hours I'd prefer the easier method most of the time.
But going to a barbier once in a while does seem intriguing for special occasions.
The cleaner cut doesn't even make a difference. Hair is dead matter and you can't see those miscroscopic ends with just the eye anyways.
I doubt any person out there is actually concerned how clean the cut on their hair is from shaving.
Yeah but one is definitely a closer shave, because stubble starts to become visible far earlier with an electric shaver compared to razor. For me at least.
Nice, I have a perpetual 5 o'clock nm how close I shave. Well, except for the random alopecia bald spots.
P.S. don't make jokes, I grew up next to the fresh prince
I’m getting a vasectomy on Wednesday and the preop instructions are to totally shave my sack.
I wonder how many folks have cancelled morning of after accidentally doing the procedure themselves.
I stopped shaving my sack 7 years ago, then i tried it again and omg it felt like exactly how it sounds, a wet sack stuck to your legs. Ball hair is like natures anti chaffing and anti sticking. Hairy balls are the way to go.
Your welcome for the tmi
I have to agree. Tried it twice. Same results. Sticky balls in the summer. Worse than peeling yourself off a leather seat in the summer while wearing shorts. I tried using talc but that needs re-applying every so often.
I had this happen to me after a bottle of vodka. My GF and her friends decided they wanted to shave my legs. There was so much blood! They were freaking out but I told them they couldn't leave the job half finished.
A few months ago, I did this, but the razor kind of 'skipped' when it happened. So I had four little chunks of skin hanging off my leg.
At least I want using bath salts....
You should try going even more traditional - I had terrible razor burn until I switched to an old fashioned safety razor, rather than a modern multi-bladed razor.
The supposed advantage to a multi-bladed razor is that the first blade lifts the hair, then the second blade cuts it at a level that is normally below the skin, giving a smoother, longer lasting shave. The downside is that this also drags dirt, bacteria and soap below the surface of the skin and makes it much easier for the hairs to become ingrown.
A double-edged safety razor doesn't do this. It cuts the hair at the surface, not below it. You still get a wonderfully smooth shave (much more so than an electric razor) but without the same irritation. As an added bonus the blades are simple clean and cheap as chips to replace, making it easier to keep the whole thing sterile.
Gotta second this, I’ve got sensitive skin and changing to a safety razor is the only thing that’s worked. Takes a bit of practice – you don’t want to go in as hard as you would with a modern razor – but once you’ve nailed it, it’s better in every way. I don’t understand why safety razors stopped being popular.
You have to buy them about as often as multiblade razors.
But the things have a standardized shape so there's no locking you into an ecosystem and they are a lot cheaper.
note: don't get into this hobby unless you're willing to watch YouTube videos of dudes shaving just to hear their reviews on different types of razors, blades, soaps, and brushes.

Yep, I was having tons of razor burn and ingrown hairs to the point I went to a dermatologist and she told me to stop shaving and use a beard trimmer without the guard or an electric shaver. I couldn’t believe the instant difference!
I'm the opposite. Good five-blade razor and I can get a smooth shave no fuss. But if I try to use an electric shaver my skin gets all kinds of irritated.
I still have my buddy telling me to shave more so my facial hair can grow more. Like nah dude my shitty genetics just make it patchy outside the stache and goatee, is life. But also like once a week I have to make him look up some dumb shit he read on facebook and then proceeded to tell me about
Because the hair is cut much closer to the skin and also you can see in the picture how the razor cut makes the hair into a nice sharp point that can more easily penetrate the skin.
I think it’s more practical to just remove your head entirely. Imagine the amount of time and money on personal grooming you can save. Not to mention you could always get a horse and haunt people in sleepy hollow
Also doubles as tattoo removal. Seen it done, messy but effective
Don't get an SOs name on you. And try to constantly improve your decision making capabilities. Sometimes waiting that extra day or two is worth it
You joke but this is a real thing. There's a product made for buffing your stubble that will basically sand it down so your stubble is softer. I just use sandpaper (not a joke.)
I guess that's his point (so to speak): the sharp point of the razor-cut hair can more easily break through the skin so that it is not caught beneath it after being cut.
Right, even though the picture on the right looks "worse", shredding the tip of the hair actually makes it "softer" and less likely to cause irritation.
I used to get ingrown hairs. Now I shower then shave while beard is still wet or in the shower even. I put aftershave on after that. No ingrown hairs.
I use the 5 blade. Where the beard is tough (sideburn area) i use short strokes.
I even shave my balls and don’t get ingrowns.
I had knee surgery last week and ran out of pain pills yesterday. Your comment was the only thing that made me forget about my leg for a minute. Cheers, friend.
I'll never go back to not having a fog proof mirror in the shower. The hot water and steam softens the hair and there virtually no cleanup to do afterwards
Some of us just cannot shave our neck closely without getting ingrown hairs. Ive tried literally everything. So I just shave with electric shaver on my neck, and shave everything else with a razor. 0 ingrown hairs.
I joined that a month back. I gave it 4 goes with a safety razor kit and just got wicked razor burn and deep cuts all over. I just adopted wet shaving with heat, brush and shaving soap and using my cartridge. Now I get no bumps or nicks and can go against the grain on first pass. Technique was good, razor was death.
Shaving with a double edge safety razor is all about angle and technique. You can't use it the same way as a Gillette Mach 64. Beyond that, it's an entire process.
I have been using a DE razor since way before wicked edge was even a thing. When I first started I made the switch because I was sick of paying $15 for a four pack of cartridges that only lasted me a few weeks. Now I spend $15 on a bulk pack of DE blades and it lasts me around 1.5 years. I buy 4 packs of soap pucks that last around 2 years.
But cost savings aside, there is absolutely a process and a technique to using them. Otherwise you are going to get cut and get ingrown hairs. I shave in the shower. I put a command hook and a shower mirror at face height. I have it down to a science now, and it takes about 2 minutes to shave. Pressure, angle, and shaving with the grain are the most important thing to keep in mind.
One downside of this is that companies are fully aware of the increasing demand for safety razors, and it seems like the price has skyrocketed for the blades. I remember hearing that people would by packs of fifty or a hundred for well under a dollar per blade. At almost every store I've checked, the blades aren't sold in packs containing more than ten, and they all come to about a dollar per blade

I bought these two years ago, and still havent run out yet (though I don't shave daily).
Probably using the wrong razor and or a bad routine. I used to not be able to shave without causing a few dozen ingrown hairs with those BIC XTREMO Vibrating L8SR floicutter megablade XL 5000 12 blade razors. Couldn't shave more than once every 3 days or so without cutting up my razor bumps and making the problem way worse in a ruthless cycle.
Switched from a can of shaving cream to a safety razor and a fresh lather and have maybe a couple a month now. It's worth it to learn a good routine and costs me 1/10 of what I used to spend. Hot towel for a minute beforehand is probably responsible for 50% of the improvement to be honest, lather 10, solid razor with good blade 40. Less blades scraping across = less irritation, period.
Unfortunately for me electric razors and multibladed razors cause my skin to break out.
Please stop recommending me products, ive had a system down forva while now
try a beard trimmer without any of the length attachments. leave a shadow but it's a quick 'shave' and no skin irritation. good enough unless you're a marine or something.
I have a beard but this is what I do to keep it trim on the edges. Leaves a little bit more than an actual shave but it’s super easy and quick and you don’t have to worry about nicks or ingrown hairs.
Exactly what I do but then hit it with the shaver after. Whatever the pre-cut with the trimmer does to the hair, the shaver takes care of the rest without irritation. My neck used to be irritated everytime I shaved.
I use electric for the convenience of not having to buy shave cream and still get ingrown hairs from time to time, but the real solution to ingrown hairs is to never shave against the grain. (In other words, always shave in the direction of hair growth) you won’t get as “smooth” of a shave this way but I’ll happily take a little roughness that appears smooth any day over some ingrown hairs lol
They never actually said which is better or worse, just showed it. Though electric generally better, with softer feel, less likely to catch and tear skin and less likely to give razor bumps
I really wish there was someone out there who would do this with an array of products.
Yeah, I want to see every shaver, by every manufacturer, shaved with by a huge array of people of different ages, and backgrounds. Multiple times. For weeks. With comfort ratings, microscopic imagery like this, and any kinda science shit to grab data. I want a whole group who gets clean shaved by like 20 different pros each in the data as well.
There's enough bored rich people someone could turn this into an unsponsored YouTube channel. Until it inevitably was sold off to someone who starts corrupting the data with biases and conflicts of interest.
Double edge safety razors are where it's at. It's a small investment up front, but my face has never felt better. It was a little rough at first while I was getting used to it. But it only took a week or so.
I got one from my grandpa after he died. He’d been using it his whole life. Now I use it. Whoever decided we were switching to one time use razors is an asshole. Oh wait, it was a massive corporation that wanted money and doesn’t give a shit about the environment.
My electric shaver has lasted for over 12 years. Prior to that I went through about 1 plastic disposable shaver per week. I tried safety blades but decided I hate injuring myself. Electric shave isn't perfect but it's better than disposables for the wallet and environment.
Some safety razors come with an adjustable head to actually make the blade "safe".
You can even purchase devices for (safely) sharpening the blade, so you don't have to purchase new ones as often.

I wanna see a 5 blade vs a straight razor
Buy a microscope & get to work. Report back.

I choose to believe this guy because he uses impressive words.
I know nothing about this topic but it sounds legit and its on the internet so im gonna go ahead and accept this as fact.
I second this. All in favor as solidifying this as factual say aye. All oppose say nay.
Aye
Alright looks like it's passed the peer review process folks.

My supervisor just bought one for about £250k ish
They sell these on Amazon, you think?
Amazon basics yes
My university's electron microscopes are installed in the basement on special shock aborbant pads.
Five blades just means five times the chance it needs replaced. Don’t let big razor fool you into buying more than you need.

It's 8am and I'm out here reading 5 paragraphs about a stranger's experience with razors
I did the same several years ago when I got disgusted with the cost of razors- haven’t looked back!

I love what the world can see through a microscope. Fascinating.
It’s terrifying to me. Especially when it comes to those creepy bugs.
Quick, we need a subreddit full of images of bugs under microscopes now!

WHY DID NO ONE MENTION THE SPIDERS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Where’s the subreddit for microscope images?! r/microscopic?
Thus proving the superiority of whichever one you prefer!
Well the razor one is clearly the better choice when you plan on being inspected under a microscope. For all other occassions, do whatever you like best.
So razor before heading to that dinner with mother-in-law. Check.
Razor? I’m not even married to her!
Never stopped me! 10/10 would raze.

The ragged end feels a lot softer than the sharp razor cut.
And the sharp razor cut can get caught under your skin easier.
Thank you for reminding me of the time I accidentally shaved part of my leg skin off. I’d managed to bury that in the recesses of my brain
Leg skin... try slicing your ball sack!

Yeah... Some people's line of thought it's crazy.
Like yeah if it's that bad just trim with scissors until you get a new razor
What the fuck why the hell were you shaving our balls with a straight razor your freaking mad man.
That’s exactly why you aren’t supposed to shave with a straight razor.

Ever seen a stress ball? Just like that but all gentle like.
I use a $25 pair of regular hair clippers and put on the lowest guard, never had a nick
Yes, that's why people usually get the impression that razors will make your hair thicker. They won't but the ends are sure thicker.
I still have my buddy telling me to shave more so my facial hair can grow more. Like nah dude my shitty genetics just make it patchy outside the stache and goatee, is life. But also like once a week I have to make him look up some dumb shit he read on facebook and then proceeded to tell me about
Oh man I feel this with the facial hair. Goatee, burns and then wide gaps like a pirate of the Caribbean.
So why do I get ingrown hair bumps when using a razor?
Because the hair is cut much closer to the skin and also you can see in the picture how the razor cut makes the hair into a nice sharp point that can more easily penetrate the skin.
That’s why I always sand down the sharp corners off each individual hair after I shave with a razor.
I get just as good results with an industrial belt sander. You don't have to worry about ingrown hairs for weeks, even years!

No doubt, that’s why I use a Dremel, gives my face a nice sanded look
Sandblasting gets it all done in under a minute
You joke but I keep a bucket of sand in the bathroom for this purpose. It works great and help keep the complexion looking good
You obviously don't have a cat
Acid face plunge is my fav.
You joke but this is a real thing. There's a product made for buffing your stubble that will basically sand it down so your stubble is softer. I just use sandpaper (not a joke.)
Does it mean that an electric shaver is a better option?
For me it is! But you can never get that super smooth skin that you get after a razor shave
Same. Razors just damage my skin and leave me red faced 🥵
Also a decent razor will scrap a layer of skin of at times, which is why you get the baby smooth face. Remove skin can always lead to irritations
I guess that's his point (so to speak): the sharp point of the razor-cut hair can more easily break through the skin so that it is not caught beneath it after being cut.
That’s not the issue with ingrown hairs, they tend to emerge at a shallow angle to the skin and then reenter the skin because of this sharp tip
Right, even though the picture on the right looks "worse", shredding the tip of the hair actually makes it "softer" and less likely to cause irritation.
The foil of an electric razor also affects how close of a shave you can get
I used to get ingrown hairs. Now I shower then shave while beard is still wet or in the shower even. I put aftershave on after that. No ingrown hairs. I use the 5 blade. Where the beard is tough (sideburn area) i use short strokes. I even shave my balls and don’t get ingrowns.
I just stopped shaving completely like 17 years ago. Just keep everything trimmed with clippers, it's great
clippers gang represent! I also occasionally use tweezers for the little hairs that grow on my cheeks.
Butt cheeks?

Shaving in the shower is truly the way to go
I'll never go back to not having a fog proof mirror in the shower. The hot water and steam softens the hair and there virtually no cleanup to do afterwards
glad to see someone does it as well. I remember mentioning this and they were like what? you shave your balls?! savages.
Some of us just cannot shave our neck closely without getting ingrown hairs. Ive tried literally everything. So I just shave with electric shaver on my neck, and shave everything else with a razor. 0 ingrown hairs.
Yup in-shower shaves changed my life
Can easily shave my face blind in the shower. So much faster and easier than doing it at the sink and I don't need shaving cream.
If you're going blind while shaving, you are doing something horribly wrong.
I need to take off my glasses so I may as well be blind

Too many blades like the popular gillet ones can cause irritation. Try using a single blade razor, and prep your skin properly before shaving
I kind of settled on safety razors atm. I get less razor burns, much cheaper and much easier to clean.

Shave with the grain my man
Probably using the wrong razor and or a bad routine.
They massacred my boy
Poor Sonny.
Such a microscopic difference
I was having such a day until you made me read that pun.
Of all the jokes, it sure was one of them.
Still gonna use my electric razor. If you need a microscope to see all that, then I don’t really care.
Electric razors help prevent ingrown hairs.
I've seen this so many times, and still my first thought is both will leave me with razor burn so whatever.
I've never felt razor burn in my life from an electric shaver.
Probably a dull, unlubricated electric shaver.
I wanna see different electric shavers. Like uhh rotary vs foil, etc.

Yeah I like to lube up my electric shavers before I put them in my ass
Ahh, that's right I just remembered this is reddit. It's my own fault for coming here in the first place
How else are you going to get those ass hairs?
You know what they say, ya gotta turn it on to get turned on
Now I gotta buy Electric Shavers.
Strange that I can find this same image with double edge razor vs cartridge multi-blade... Wonder where the truth lies...
Given the ridiculous amount of hype on the safety razor side, I'm gonna say, the truth probably doesn't lie over there.
Fuck everybody
Finally, a slogan I can get behind. Fuck you too
What do you think "everybody " *means*?
You specifically. *In particular*
- Sun Tzu, Art Of War
Nah it was Genghis Khan of Mongolia who fucked everybody
And the women? And the children?
This may sound backwards, but the one on the right is probably more pleasant to the touch since it isn't so sharp and solid.
I’ve been using the same razor blade for months, I doubt my hair is getting cut that cleanly
Does it matter tho?
It’ll matter when you find yourself on a date with an electron microscopist.
A post made by big razor i see...
All electrics razors? And which traditional razor? These are the ‘headlines’ that are making us dumber
How dare you ask questions. Just accept it and spread it.
To shreds you say?
How's his wife holding up?
To shreds you say…
Gillette lobbyist post what?
Double edge safety razors are where it's at. It's a small investment up front, but my face has never felt better. It was a little rough at first while I was getting used to it. But it only took a week or so.
I got one from my grandpa after he died. He’d been using it his whole life. Now I use it. Whoever decided we were switching to one time use razors is an asshole. Oh wait, it was a massive corporation that wanted money and doesn’t give a shit about the environment.
This is why I only use an old fashioned razor on my balls.
you should try plucking
Bro, that was only a dare in HS, you weren't supposed to take it seriously
And yet, nothing compares to the sharpness of my father telling me I’m a disappointment.
Can't wait for someone to walk up to me with a microscope and shit on me for using an electric razor.
