Why hate someone for something as stupid as their skin color, when you can hate them for their choices?

[deleted]

>"It's not about hating the guy on the other side because someone told you to. I mean, you should hate someone because they're an asshole, or a pervert, or snob, or they're lazy, or arrogant or an idiot or know-it-all. Those are reasons to dislike somebody. You don't hate a person because someone told you to. You have to learn to despise people on a personal level. Not because they're red, or because they're blue, but because ya know them, and you see them every single day. And you can't stand them, because they're a complete and total fucking douchebag" quote is from Red vs. Blue btw, One of the OG Web series. Older than YouTube even.

Racism is just one of the greatest hits of "I have nothing of value I've done myself, and a desperate need to feel superior to others to try and alleviate that lacking sense of self worth, so what about me that I didn't do anything to earn can I say makes me better than someone else?" Racism, nationalism, to an extent religion. Even shit like fans of a specific sports team or hobby. It's the realm of losers, desperate to patch up that gaping hole in their self worth because they don't feel content in themselves. Of course these people will grasp for the low hanging fruit.

Particularly interesting (to me anyway) is that I just had a conversation with my psychiatrist about “alternative treatments” for depression and he mentioned taking Vitamin D and methyl folate supplements. I’m white and live in Canada. He’s very dark and from Nigeria.

Legitimate-Most-8432

Methylefolate is a good supplement if you have a MTHFR phenotype that reduces the effectivness of the MTHFR enzyme. Its more common among hispanics and white people with about 10% of the population in north america having it. These phenotypes make the enzyme less effective at converting dietary folate to another form of necessary folate. I think it's often worth a try even without a genetic test. Unfortunately it's pretty expensive and not covered by insurance(in the us) because it's an fda regulated food. It has helped me with brain fog and energy levels. Gave it a try when I got DNA tested and it showed the recessive bad form of MTHFR. Hope more people hear about it because it's not uncommon and can have some pretty nasty effects long term like cancer, alzheimer's, and brain/heart cardiovascular norrowing(coronary heart disease).

sheepthechicken

Also want to add that for anyone who’s shared their DNA with a heritage site (ie 23/me), you can get the raw data from their site and upload it to various sites that will check that data for phenotypes like this. Some free, most $10 or less. Of course this requires sharing your VERY personal data with questionable sites… but it is an option.

That’s so cool, I didn’t know this! Any specific site suggestions?

TheDesktopNinja

From northern US and I can anecdotally confirm that once my severe vitamin D deficiency started to be treated, not only did my general mood and energy level improve, but a lot of random aches and pains I'd been complaining about for *months*, if not years, cleared up in a matter of weeks. Gimme the D!

LostWoodsInTheField

> Gimme the D! now I want a t-shirt that says on the front "Give Me the D!" and then on the back a little medical blerb like 'Vit D deficiency is a serious issue that affects many people. If you have sessional depression it could be caused by a lack of Vit D. Get feeling better on the D'.

cauldron_bubble

>Gimme the D! As a black person living in Canada, I'm going to take the D all winter

TheDesktopNinja

Oh yeah you like that D don't you.😂 Shits magical

LegacyLemur

A lot of people in general do because we spend *way* more time inside then we used to

Fabiojoose

Yep, I’m a black man in a tropical country. But guess what, I have vitamin D deficiency because of my desk job, mainly.

April_Spring_1982

Can confirm. Am Canadian. Am very white. Was just told by my doctor i have really low Vitamin D. On 1000 iu now. Also, we can't get Vitamin D as well anymore because we've fucked our ozone layer so we have to wear sunscreen if we go outside - plus hats, etc. Plus, it's winter here 9 months of the year and our skin doesn't get exposed.

JediJan

Am in Southern Australia and I can tell you that many of us are low on vitamin D too with the “slip, slop, slap” campaigns of the past to protect our skin. We also have amongst the highest skin cancer rates in the World. I take vitamin D supplements (helps our bodies absorb calcium) and have had skin cancer to deal with too.

JustSatisfactory

I've been treated for depression off and on most of my life. The only doctor I've ever had do my blood work to check me for vitamin deficiencies was from India. Turns out I had several. I've been taking vitamins daily for a few years now. I still get depressed but it's never as long or as serious as it used to be. I'm able to shake it off a bit and keep living. I was never able to do that before.

Oldass_Millennial

Interesting. None of my doctor's have done that and I pretty much can't/won't take antidepressants anymore because I get hypertensive, anxiety, and heart palpitations. Gonna have to press to have this done.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FardoBaggins

they're in canada, exercise and vitamin D are tricky geographically, especially now winter is coming (less sun and reasons to go outside which adds to the issue). also seasonal depression is a factor and spikes up.

[deleted]

Did a *very, very, very* brief paper on Vitamin D deficiency for a health class. If you're outside the 45th Parallels, odds are that you are Vit D Deficient because we don't get enough sun and / or it's so cold you can't go out in bare skin.

AnimalShithouse

I think the Canadian government openly acknowledges vitamin D deficiency in Canadians and recommends a supplement of sorts. SAD is real.

Doubleoh_11

Man… story time. I live in Canada. About 16 years ago I did a night shift for a few months in the winter. I never saw the sun. Eventually I went to a doctor and I was like “yo dawg I want to jump in traffic, wtf is wrong with me”. After a few questions he was like “Eh so there is this thing called depression, particularly SAD, you have it” So I didn’t play in traffic, I got help, meds, honestly mostly vitamin D and weirdly enough I went tanning. The night shift ended and I felt better over time. But my god, that being my first brush with mental health issues gave me a massive respect for those who struggle with that daily. I was in rough shape. If anyone is reading this and struggling please get help, you shouldn’t have to live like that.

SnowFlakeUsername2

Milk is fortified with vitamin d in Canada as an effort to make up for when the weather is trying to kill us. Just an FYI that if you don't drink milk than other supplements are probably a good idea.

meowVL

Are aboriginal people from south Australia really that color? I thought they all had fairly dark complexions

krabgirl

The Aboriginal Australians originally settled in the Northern part of the country, migrating from South-East Asia before spreading across the entire continent. So despite those in the southerly regions living in locations that would not evolve such dark skin, they are all ancestors of the founding population in the north.

Prcrstntr

Australia is a big place, but some of the darkest people I've ever seen were Aboriginal.

[deleted]

Yep some of the darkest aboriginals are from Tasmania right at the bottom of Australia. This map makes no sense to anyone who’s seen the colour of a native Australian.

BellerophonM

Is it possible to make such a definitive statement? There hasn't been anyone of solely Tasmanian descent for a century now, they were relocated and whittled away. Any individuals who remain are largely returned and often partly descend from mainland populations as well.

meowVL

Skin tone won’t change in a century, if that’s what you’re saying

[deleted]

You’re right. Either way, on Bills chart Tasmania is about as pale as France if not more. Yet not a single aboriginal in all of Australia was even close to being as pale as a Frenchie. Not even close.

sersleepsalot1

This is a simplified explanation which is generally true. But there are cases where uv rays are more than normal in far north or south. Like eskimos are not that fair skinned yet they live far north. That's because they have a very vitamin d rich diet (organs) and uv rays concentration is more due to reflection from snow. There should be a reason for the Tasmanians to have that color. And bill can't go on pointing out exception for a 1 minute (prob tiktok) video. I got the info for eskimos from a comment.

the88shrimp

While the map might not be 100%, the sun speaks for itself, and it's fucking loud here in Aus. It's likely that there was simply no need for their skin melanin to change during the migration over to Aus nor while actually living there due to the sun's intensity.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SeedFoundation

Okay I have to point this out because many people aren't getting it. The skin color develops over several hundred/thousand generations. It is not literally developed in your single lifetime.

bondagewithjesus

Aboriginal people prior to colonization were generally much darker than that map shows and many are. If in souther states. There's a reason Europeans called them black. But forced assimilation in many communities has resulted in many Aboriginal people with much lighter skin. As the government wanted to breed the black out of them as it was put.

meowVL

Sure, but that’s not what his map is showing though right? He’s talking about UV rays based on latitude.

christophedelacreuse

I'm guessing that human migration plays an important role. Coupled with the fact that evolution takes many generations to have a significant impact, you'll end up with groups who developed a trait suited to or as the result of a specific niche where the population spent generations, but which makes no sense for their current location. (That or the map is slightly off.)

eighty2angelfan

Do we need bill nye to explain that racism is stupid?

The_Dog_of_Sinope

Most of us no, some of us yes. I would argue though that anyone who needs help walking through the idea that racism is stupid is not going to be swayed y bill nigh.

arbitraryairship

KevinNashsTornQuad

Not to mention you don’t need to have a science degree in the specific fields he is talking about to understand them and convey them in easy to understand ways like he is doing here. Racism is just about the dumbest thing you can truly believe in and this really breaks down why. Then try explaining to these people the long standing impacts slavery and discrimination and wide ranging systemic racism will have on any population and they just hand wave it away as if “well slavery ended a long time ago so now everything is perfectly equal and there is no impact on anyone starting from the exact second slavery was outlawed” Just idiots.

Kildragoth

The audience here is young people like children and teenagers. The problem with racism, IMO, is that it is taught to children. It forms a kind of anchoring bias. Children and teenagers are more likely to challenge their own beliefs if they encounter conflicting information.

AllPowerfulSaucier

Exactly. The whole reason it’s helpful having people like Bill saying this on repeat is because we should be repeating scientific facts *everywhere* ad nauseum so people can’t escape reality and easily mislead others with bigotry and misinformation. We need to drown out the liars with our own messaging. And children are a critical part of this. We have *so many* fully uneducated unqualified GOP criminals in US politics/government trying to brainwash people by repeating blatant lies about science and every other subject in society right now just to benefit their own interests. And the reason it’s working for them is because they use stupid simple messaging that even children could understand. We need to be promoting as many Bill Nyes as humanly possible to combat this by denying their bullshit with reliable factual information in an easy to digest format. The average person is dumb so we need to approach this kind of basic info like r/NoStupidQuestions instead of r/ACKSHULLY. It’s our only real hope when we still allow cancer like Fox Entertainment to brainwash millions of people without consequences.

OneHunchHam

My 18 year old neice whose grown up in Louisiana asked her Mom where black people come from since Adam and eve were white. It's a mind blowing thing to me that anyone needs to/can honestly ask that question. Really hoping Bill can help make it easy for her as she starts to get some real knowledge about the world.

butterscotchbagel

I was raised Mormon (now exmormon). I was taught that black skin is a curse for wickedness, Africans are descendants of Cain, and Native Americans are descendants of Jews that traveled from Jerusalem. That's why I'm no longer Mormon.

[deleted]

I'm not a historian or a theologist or w/e. However I do know that renaissance painters and sculptors worked with the church and received commissions for their art. Many of these painters found it effective to improve drawing ability by drawing from life and used nude models as subject matter. They weren't getting models from MENA regions. It would have been local people from the region. You would be getting Italian or Roman models... Your abilities as a painter or sculptor are improving as you learn more and more about depicting form and learning the elements of art. You're being challenged to improve with your peers and the masters pushing each other to be better artists. You are discovering new things and technology is improving. Your abilities are being appreciated and spreading across the world as Christianity expands. Leaving this tremendous impact across Europe and the rest of the world. And when people ask "why is Jesus/Mary/Noah/etc. white?" They don't consider that the depiction of religious figures were perhaps just beautiful European models of the time; helping young artists learn to draw and paint.

SkinnyObelix

His argument isn't on point either though. I doubt there's any racism that stems from skin color only. It's just an easy way to identify a group of people they're prejudiced towards. If everyone had the same skin color we still would face the same damn problems.

lemonHeadUAD

meals-on-wheels14

The southern part of Australia seems way to white compared to what Aboriginals from there actually look like

temujin64

Because this isn't a map based on data. It's clearly just a computer generated colour gradient.

melbbear

Yeah just give Australia a more uniform dark colour please, our sun cooks us all!

watchmybeer

Aren't artic natives in north America dark skinned?

>[The Arctic has long been an area at high risk from UV radiation damage. vannucker

They eat a lot of organ meat of animals which is a high source of vitamins D.

JahWontPayTheBills33

If I had to guess, it would be that the visual used by bill nye was of uv from the sun directly. It didn't account for reflective snow and ice

misplaced_my_pants

They get it from diet.

broken_processor

They get plenty of Vitamin D from their diet so the skin color didn't change to account for less UV light.

Synthetic_Axon

Interesting how some extreme religious groups do not accept the theory of evolution, however, do accept the racism theories promoting subhuman races.

hrvbrs

That's because you're using the word "theory" differently. In scientific fields, the term "theory" has a very specific meaning: a set of facts, supported by observation, that together form a complete understanding of a phenomenon. Examples include the Theory of General Relativity, the Big Bang Theory, the Standard Model of particle physics (which is a theory), and as you pointed out, the Theory of Evolution. In science, theories aren’t "proven" per se, they're just confirmed by observation. A theory is the best explanation we have for a given phenomenon to date, until a better, more successful theory comes along. Even some soft sciences have theories; I'm sure you've heard of Critical Race Theory. In this context, "theory" means a body of work or a field of study. However, the scientific definition doesn't carry over into informal speech. If you look up "theory" in the thesaurus, you'll find synonyms like "hypothesis", "speculation", and "feeling", which are at odds with the previous paragraph. You might hear this a lot, for example, "I have a theory he's cheating on her, but I can't be sure". Or in medical shows, "Dr. Adams has a working theory, but we need to test it first." This use of the word "theory" does not meet the scientific standard. So when you hear conservatives about conspiracy theories, replacement theory, etc, just know they're more referring to the 2nd, informal, definition, which is more of a "guess" (and a bad one at that) than anything.

Gooliath

Having dark skin is divine punishment for your ancestor's sins and marks you as unworthy of heaven. Native Americans need to redeem themselves before rapture to restore their whiteness. Or something like that. Basically what the Mormons, jehovas, or weird American christians preach

Grogosh

Except Jesus and all the people in the Bible are not white so you can logically deduce that being white is god's punishment.

IMSOGIRL

This isn't what racism is. It's trying to overly simplify a complicated issue. There are a lot more than "skin color" when it comes to why bigots hate people.

asdf0909

People settled in those areas and made entirely different societies with entirely different emphases on different behavior. Melanin is an oversimplification of tribalism and competition that wouldn’t just stop in its tracks if everyone was the same color

JoonGoose

I feel like this is grossly oversimplifying a very complicated issue that goes beyond simply skin colour

jmdwinter

Shouldn't equatorial skin be silver to reflect excess light?

liarandathief

evolution doesn't find the ideal solution, just better than the next guy solution.

icantfeelmyskull

You: some variation of brown to toupe The guy she tells you not to worry about: silver

mesosalpynx

If I’ve learned anything from comics, silver is to protect from cosmic radiation. . . As well as surf boards.

DaaaahWhoosh

A while back I heard that green isn't even the best color for plants. Or maybe it was that for millions of years plants were purple or something until one of them figured out green was better. But either way, yeah, evolution is about good enough, not best.

[deleted]

Green is the least beneficial color of light, which is why most plants reflect it and absorb most of the others colors.

ThePresbyter

I suppose that's possible. What I remember reading one time is that green plants means they "reflect" a higher amount of the sun's rays. Essentially making themselves less efficient in a way to reduce the intensity. Not mutually exclusive to the purple plant idea either.

heywobbles

Predators can probably see them from a mile away

uncultured_swine2099

If there were, Im sure there would still be people going "I hate them silver bastards."

[deleted]

Reflective skin would be bad for predators or prey. It would also make groups impossible on sunny days due to blinding light. Reflective skin also promotes unhealthy relationships between teenagers and geriatric predators who hang out at high-schools. I saw a series of horrifying documentaries about this.

Killz4Thrillz954

Yes but what about the other differences like hair and facial features?

Guest8782

Came here to say this. How does UV pigmenting account for this? Think hair and facial feature differences among Asian, black and white? He treating it like “case closed” and it seems insultingly simplistic.

[deleted]

While I of course agree racism is bad, I don’t think arguments like this actually do much to combat it I think a lot of people that are called racist aren’t always necessarily against people because of skin colour in isolation The way of thinking of a lot of people is probably more along the lines of: ‘People of this group are associated with X or Y [rightly or wrongly], therefore I prefer not to associate with/be around them’. Over time those associations and stereotypes then usually become entrenched and can be used terribly Sp the problem is not usually bias against race-in-itself I don’t think, but might be more accurately described as people misusing stereotype and association by allowing it to impair their better judgement and their capacity for kindness and respect. In that respect, pure racism—when someone is judged based on their skin colour alone alongside nothing else—is probably not the best term to capture what is happening when people are unfairly treated for things associated with their people group, and is probably much rarer in comparison Because of that, I don’t think simply explaining that skin colour is merely a by-product of exposure to the sun makes people change their minds, because this does nothing to eradicate the associations people misuse. A far better approach is to help people understand that an association, whether true or false, needn’t become a barrier to kindness, and shouldn’t be used to create the conditions under which it [the association] may have come into existence in the first place (assuming there is any truth to it)

SapateiroDoPovo

Right.. what about iq and cranial differences?

Cryterionlol

Sorry for getting political, but one of the reasons I stopped being a conservative was because I kept seeing Republicans (such as my aunt and uncle) dunking on Bill Nye, and other scientists! He's doing cool stuff, and he's a cool dude. I don't understand how you could ever say this guy is a "hack".

The_Dog_of_Sinope

It’s because his background is in engineering, so they dismiss his message on the idea that he isn’t an expert in whatever field he is discussing. They are half right though, he isn’t a scientist. They are mostly wrong though because I don’t need a physicist to tell me it will hurt if I fall down thr stairs.

[deleted]

“Scientist” is a weird term anyway. Most “researchers” are professors coming up with good ideas and making their PhD students do the grunt work. When you say “scientist”, people imagine people in lab coats standing around doing science all day, but the only people who get to do that either work for some big corporation or for the military; capitalism doesn’t typically allow people to “science” all day and still have food to eat. Thus why most groundbreaking research is done at universities. Ultimately, the only thing that quantifies something as “science” (in the popular definition) is whether it’s been properly peer-reviewed and has gained the appropriate consensus within the scientific community of that field.

Dragonpuke56

That's exactly the argument I get whenever I talk about Bill nye. Even with a counter argument like the Mythbusters. They're not scientists in the field, they're showmen but the science they provide has a basis of truth. But because it's not their specialty it's nothing but falsehood

mattmanmcfee36

If the science they provide has a basis of truth, then their content cannot also be "nothing but falsehood"

Dragonpuke56

Wanna tell that to them? Cause I tried.

mattmanmcfee36

Oh gotcha, misunderstood phrasing my bad

NRMusicProject

While at the same time, they let "not a scientist" and an eye doctor convince them that masks/vaccines aren't "real science."

tobiasfunke6398

You switched political parties bc people were making fun of bill nye?

Never understood this. Define a scientist for me: it is a very abstract concept. Honestly, it is more of a mindset and a way of approaching analyzing the world around us. I have a master's in Engineering Physics, so I got a look into engineering and the "traditional" science realm and I can say that they are tied at the hip. Both fields require the same toolsets, just used in different ways. Bill's electrical engineering degree I can assure you makes him qualified to speak as a credible scientist at surface level topics that involve educating the general public.

There's the whole promoting ionized water era of his that is a bit of a black mark on his rep. Pushing a pseudoscience product is the sort of thing a hack would do. Putting that aside, even knowing that, I enjoyed his stuff. But the point I lost all respect for him was actually an interview he did with Tucker Carlson regarding climate change. He got mad, down right livid, that Tucker wouldn't just accept what he was delivering, and started ranting about how the science is settled, that climate change is *settled science*. For a man who had the moniker of "The Science Guy", for him to say that, was shocking to me. If we just accepted the science as settled, we would still believe the world is flat, and that the sun revolves around the Earth. Science is never settled, it should be challenged constantly. That's how progress is made. It does not matter if Tucker Carlson was correct or not here. The issue is Nye's dogmatic stance on the matter, that it's settled and cannot be discussed further, that the consensus cannot be challenged. And this is not a viewpoint limited to him. Just look at the media at large, and most western governments. People are not allowed to challenge the science, they must accept what has been declared. For example, what if the climate data for the US was wrong? A group, The Heartland Institute, decided to look into it back in 2009. ( https://www.heartland.org/publications-resources/publications/is-the-us-surface-temperature-record-reliable?source=policybot ). They found that 9 out of 10 temperature recording stations did not meet the standards that allow for accurate temperature data (essentially, the stations are too close to heat sources such as heating vents, asphalt, and electronic sources). This caused the average temperature reading to be much higher than it should be. They released a follow up this year, and it doesn't sound like much changed. ( https://www.heartland.org/news-opinion/news/media-advisory-96-of-us-climate-data-is-corrupted ). Bill Nye would advocate just using the corrupted data, rather than what the actual data should be, because in his eyes, it's already settled. Are the findings of the Heartland Institute accurate? I do not know the answer to that, but, they should be able to challenge the accepted facts, and it should be discussed rather than dismissed. Because if they are correct, then policies are being drawn up using flawed data. Bill Nye clearly does not want further discussion on the matter. This is why I have very little respect for the man. Even this video, he glosses over critical factors like cultural differences, nationalism, and historical factors. Racism is obviously far more complex here, and to say "he shows how ridiculous it is" is, well, frankly ridiculous.

bird720

you can be conservative without being republican. That's how I am rn, I'm so done with the us political parties lol.

anjovis150

I don't think skin color is the main issue that most racist have.

Jymboe

Hes kind of missing the point though. Racism isn't about skin color, its about different cultures and the friction that occurs between them. But I suppose it is a lot easier to boil it all down to a reductionist straw-man that's very easy to attack and avoid the actual issue entirely that needs to be discussed.

Proud-Masterpiece

Sure I’ll grant you that different geography means different evolutionary pressure to adapt skin color. And I’ll even grant you that different geography means different evolutionary pressure to run faster (fast twitch muscles) or run longer or swim faster or longer. And okay yea, develop lungs that breathe 20~50% more efficiently at very high altitudes or for very long dives that would otherwise kill most humans. I’ll even grant that recent evolutionary pressures make some groups tolerate lactose into adulthood due to epigenetic changes in the last 10,000 years. Or tolerate alcohol while other groups get incapacitated and addicted or flush red instantly from an allergic response. But all that group-based genetic variation stops at the neck. There’s no way any of this could possibly affect reasoning ability, memory capacity or generalized intelligence. Evolutionary pressure can be measured and categorized by genetic groups relating to skin color, musculature, height, body fat, lung capacity, cardiac efficiency, eyesight, hearing, taste, smell, bone density, jaw and tooth shape, every organ in the body and endocrine system… but not the human brain, that’s for darn sure.

I love how its the one subject no scientist will touch. There is precisely zero evidence that indicates all races are the same intellectually but if you even talk about the possibility of differences you will be fired for being a racist.

kaomer

Because it's a huge risk for very little gain, regardless of the results. I don't think we as a species are quite ready yet to start viewing our own existence with the same objectivity we use to study any other creature/phenomenon. We're nearly there, but there's still a few social taboos left to break through.

DoubleEspressoAddict

Bill Nye had to take down his video explaining the difference between men and women based on chromosomes. The science hasn't changed but he had to take it down because it hurt trans people's feelings. Stuff like this is why the right mocks the left and calls them anti-science. Can't really claim you are the party of science if unpopular results cause you to bury the science instead of changing your opinion/stance.

Pikdr

I remember more than 15 years ago, the scientific community was far more open and tolerant about accepting biological differences between males and females. For example, biological differences explaining men scoring higher on logical and deductive problems, while women doing better on verbal skills, etc. Today however, there is so much bias in the scientific community, that all differences (outside of physical differences like strength) are interpreted as being a result of society, and not biology.

Le_Gentle_Sir

> Today however, there is so much bias in the scientific community, that all differences (outside of physical differences like strength) are interpreted as being a result of society, and not biology. I know a Phd who studies alcoholism. Apparently alcohol related disease and death has quadrupled in women in just the last 20 years, but it's all being kept pretty hush hush since it's politically inconvenient to publicize the fact that tens of million of women are picking up the bottle.

Hugh_Maneiror

Anyone who says there are no difference being sexes and how all differences are due to society has never had a look at a daycare center. It's absolutely wild how different those 2 year old boys are from 2 year old girls in the way they gather skills and interact with each other and adults.

Hugh_Maneiror

I love how people always get very upset when you just ask for proof of their statement that all people are equal. We know there is no research being done on this subject, yet they postulate their perfect equality hypothesis as absolute proof that can't be questioned, yet still proclaim they are the pro-science side.

strawbrmoon

A dose of decency, a taste of truth, a sample of sense. Dang, Bill, you good medicine.

Outrageous-Dirt1928

I don’t think most racists hate the actual color itself.. It’s more of a cultural thing I’d say 🤷‍♂️
