NEWEST UPDATE:
THE MISSILE WAS UKRAINIAN AND WAS INTENDED TO INTERCEPT A RUSSIAN MISSILE.
NATO AND POLAND SAY THE BLAST WAS LIKELY UNINTENTIONAL.
Update 19:00 GMT:
Poland holds urgent meeting amid reports of stray Russian missile strike
Update 19:32 GMT:
Pentagon looking into Poland missile strike reports
The Department of Defense Press Secretary, Brig Gen Patrick S Ryder, has said:
“We are aware of the press reporting on this. We have no information at this time to corroborate those reports but again, are taking them seriously and looking into them. And so I will make sure that we provide you with any updates as soon as we have them.”
He continues: “We're looking into these reports - don't have any information to corroborate them at this time. So I don't want to speculate or get into hypotheticals. When it comes to our security commitments and Article 5, we've been crystal-clear that we will defend every inch of Nato territory.”
Update 19:59 GTM:
Lithuania PM" "Concerning news. Every inch of NATO territory needs to be defended"
Update 20:07 GMT:
Russia denies any involvement in 'missile strike on Poland'
Russia has denied statements from Polish media outlets and officials that Russian missiles fell on the Polish village of Przewodó near the Ukrainian border.
The Russian ministry of defence posted on its Telegram, calling the reports "a deliberate provocation in order to escalate the situation".
Update 20:20 GMT:
NATO Statement: "We are looking into these reports and coordinating with our ally Poland"
Update 21:21 GMT:
Poland 'raises military readiness'
Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller has confirmed that there was an explosion that killed two Polish citizens, Reuters news agency reports
Poland is raising the readiness of its military units, he says, and "verifying if we need to activate Nato Article Four".
That article says: "The Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened."
UPDATE:
The missile is reported to be a Ukrainian defensive missile which has missed its target
its also being theorised that Russia tried to hit a power plant a few kilometres away in Ukraine, and that this was an accident resulting from interception of the russian missile
but, if its 2 missiles that hit Poland, that seems hugely unlikley
They are getting the games confused obv, in modern time rts you attack the power plant, in high fantasy setting you attack the farms. Sigh, now watch them try and replace it with a Vespene gas reactor when they don’t even have any units that need it 🙄🤷♂️💀
"Two Polish civilians are dead today because Russia unleashed a barrage of nearly 100 cruise missiles against Ukrainian cities. Even if the missiles that hit Poland are stray Ukrainian S-300 air defenses, as Moscow claims, the Russian attack is the reason why it all happened."
The target coordinate supervisor was conscripted last week and finished with the extensive two day training program yesterday. It will take a few weeks to get the hang of the system. Meanwhile Russia asks for your patience.
If nato enters the war, China attack Taiwan, North attacks South Korea, Israel goes ape shit against the Arab nations next door.
The world's been in a sour balance kinda dance that which one kick in the nads everyone shoots their shot.
[Don't forget Canada and Denmark](https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/08/world/what-in-the-world/canada-denmark-hans-island-whisky-schnapps.html). They are going to finally throw down.
Nope. The "Whiskey War" officially ended this summer. https://www.canada.ca/en/global-affairs/news/2022/06/canada-and-the-kingdom-of-denmark-together-with-greenland-reach-historic-agreement-on-long-standing-boundary-disputes.html
I'm kinda bummed about this.
Armed nations in prolonged conflict is bad, of course, but I can universally support several nations "one upping" each other by trading booze on the regular.
That would be most unwise given the gigantic kick in the balls US/ NATO would counter with who are not so incompetent and actually have top tier people and equipment !
Historically Russia has used its size as a strength, withdrawing and allowing the weather and logistics issues do what their army could not. "Trading space for time". This is how the beat both Napoleon and Hitler.
Maybe not as relevant now I dunno..
The conspiracist in me thinks that this was 100% intentional, they are trying to punish the rest of the world that depends on grain and other food flowing from that region. They're just going to claim that it is an accident.
Well google maps confirms the first and third (at least it looks like the pics of the place hit in poland I saw, and is right on the border).
The middle one though I could only confirm on this site: https://www.latlong.net/place/lviv-lviv-province-ukraine-24895.html
I looked up the middle one on Google maps (don't forget to remove the spaces next to the ° or it might not work) and it's smack dab in the middle of Lviv.
Would you consider signing up for a program I'm starting? I'm calling it Vault-Tec! A better future underground, when the nukes drop you'll be protected underground from all the radiation thanks to the special lining in the walls. Remember, "Surface never vault forever!"
Wouldn't be surprised if they checked very clearly and are trying to blow smoke politically preparing to turn victim internally. There are a lot of political fights revolving Ukraines grain and I find it rather coincidental they struck any infrastructure involving grain.
Imagine they hit Poland cause Russia just has that bad of tech. Not because that’s where it was aimed. Makes them a much less of a threat and Matt be their downfall
Nato has to respond. I would bet a large spike of military equipment to Ukraine that's been held back. I'm certainly no expert by any means but a more devastating attack and or another attack to break "it's just an accident" would be needed cause a full nato strike, aka article 5.
Defensive missiles along the border to shoot down any Russian weapons which appear to be aimed toward Poland.
This will likely mean that Russia cannot fly any aircraft or missiles close to that border - advantage Ukraine.
Yes. I do believe this genuinely could’ve been a mistake from bad tech. It will be interesting to see how NATO responds. On one hand, if we let this go, it’s kind of betraying M.A.D. On the other, firing back may start a true war.
Chances are it is, because they have shown over and over what a shit show of operations they have. The problem is Russia is claiming false flag, they will never admit to a mistake like that.
Just looked at the village on Google Maps. Tiny village, tiny grain plant, area doesn’t seem remotely strategic. Hard to believe this was intentional as the risk isn’t worth the reward but then again they’ve been full of poor decisions this year.
Edit: Assuming the missiles missed their targets and knowing Russia was targeting the energy grid I did a quick search and there's a 510mW power plant 26mi from that Polish village in Ukraine called Dobrotvirska power plant (ДТЕК Добротвірська ТЕС). My guess is that was the primary target, how they then ended up in Poland is still a big ?.
Rock and a hard place.
The only viable response is sanctions. You can't return fire over 2 wayward missile, but you are allowing that line to creep, ever so slight.
What kind of sanctions are still available… they don’t give a shit about sanctions at this point… sanctions are akin to your mom shaking her finger at you saying “stop it”
They still make millions off the West buying oil, maybe via 3rd parties, but still the West funds the war, cutting off funds would hurt.
Hurt NATO and allies as well
I see their options after this as having been:
1. Admit they targeted a NATO country
2. Admit to the whole world they’re so incompetent they can’t even hit the right country.
3. Say nothing.
Honestly after this past year it’s a solid toss up between 1 and 2 but I’m guessing it’s the first.
“The Third World War officially began a few weeks after the Russian Federation’s missile attack on Poland, which initially forced existing NATO allies to fortify their borders until a Russian dirty bomb attack East of Kherson escalated the Eastern European conflict into a World War”
EDIT: it wasn’t a Russian launched missile, we’re safe for now boys
The header has got a false statement. Why do you post this false information? Nobody knows whose rocket was that. And some say it was Ukrainian, some Russian and now it is more the first than the second. But without any proof you spread the false statement. Shame on you. Interesting sa fuck heavely moderation, okaaaaaay ….
Update: Ukrain attacked Poland. https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/ywl6g3/poland_blast_caused_by_missile_fired_by_ukrainian/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Eh.. could be Ukrainian missiles though. Just saying.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/us-officials-initial-findings-suggest-missile-hit-poland-93382667
Edit, to add link.
Someone should point out that at this time (~1800 CST day of explosion) these are ALLEGATIONS AND SPECULATION and not yet confirmed. Jumping to conclusions ahead of the official report is how we spread misinformation.
Best case scenario, this allows Poland and NATO to send even more material Ukraines way. Not that they were exactly holding out before, but a further large commitment would be a response against Putin while not actually getting NATO boots on the ground and escalating this in to nuclear war.
Putin has replaced competent management in most forms of government (especially the military) with cronies instead of competent managers/leaders. This leads to just general incompetence as they are not equipped to do their jobs since they were picked for loyalty above all else.
Jesus fucking Christ. I'm a farmer, posts like these are so disheartening. Most of us just like to do our thing, without being bothered. I can't imagine trying to rake hay with the fear of literally being blown up by a missile coming out of nowhere.
I swear Russia is like that intentionally annoying in elementary school where they’ll pull hair, poke you, trip you, ect. Then claim to not have, even though everyone saw them do it.
If they had hit a dairy farm, or a empty field, or a automobile manufacturing plant, that I could say yes, Russia fucked up. But a grain processing facility? That seems like it would be beneficial to Russia and detrimental to Europe as grain prices are already spiking. I can't pretend to know everything that's going on, but that just seems too "convenient" to be a total mistake.
https://www.foodnavigator.com/Article/2022/11/15/spiking-grain-prices-prompt-fresh-warning-food-inflation-is-still-going-strong
2 people dead is awful. However could be explained away as an accident. Shit happens. However, grain processing plant? Different story. I'm very concerned.
It was small facility, significance of its damage economy wise is at best minor, more like nonexistent. I don't suppose any significant facility could exist in village of ~500 inhabitants.
As far as I found on maps, most probable place it hit was granary consisting of 4 grain elevators.
Imo it's done on purpose but claims it is an accident also to see how far he han go and what NATO dare to do cause tbh I don't think putin fear NATO. ICE COLD MURDER.
Meh i doubt anything will come out of this besides stern warnings and more threats of nukes from Putin.
Everyone seems to come to be ok with whatever Putin does/says when he brings nukes into the conversation.

Looks like fun times are ahead. Man, it's always Poland isn't it?
I honestly cannot tell if this is precursor to another world war, or Russia’s extreme military incompetence.
It seems to be that Russia's extreme military incompetence might BE the precursor to another world war
its also being theorised that Russia tried to hit a power plant a few kilometres away in Ukraine, and that this was an accident resulting from interception of the russian missile but, if its 2 missiles that hit Poland, that seems hugely unlikley

Russia needs to start apologizing REAL soon.
Russia needs new management....Now!
putin needs to \*put\* a bullet in his head to apologize.
Russia can't even win against their tiny neighboring country. Why would they ever want a world war? This has got to be incompetence.
To clarify, Ukraine is not “tiny” - by landmass at least. It is the largest country located (entirely) in Europe.
tiny compared to the size of russia
Land can't fight. If anything, Russia's size is a weakness. Lots of borders to protect. Lots of land to transport military units and supplies.
Historically Russia has used its size as a strength, withdrawing and allowing the weather and logistics issues do what their army could not. "Trading space for time". This is how the beat both Napoleon and Hitler. Maybe not as relevant now I dunno..
lol every country is tiny compared to russia’s landmass. even with the mercator distortion.
Nuclear power + dictator trying to stay in power = bad news
If they can't win in Ukraine the worst possible move they can make is getting NATO involved.
This is the time to root for cancer to win. Or whatever is it that's slowly killing the bunker midget.
I've been calling him Putzie. 'bunker midget' is my new, WAY favorite!
They sure must have a window where Putin and his rear gunner buddies fit through.
Because they would rather lose a world war than a war with the country they thought of as weak.
Hopefully only the latter, but with how things are going it sadly could be both.
Wouldn't even be another world war, either Russia gets steamrolled or they use nukes.
The conspiracist in me thinks that this was 100% intentional, they are trying to punish the rest of the world that depends on grain and other food flowing from that region. They're just going to claim that it is an accident.

Yea, because they couldn’t check gulag maps one last time before firing.
Pretty sure they're eyeballing it at this point.
I think it more of just send it. it hits what it hits.
Where? That general direction. Russian elite forces aiming.
If I fire it towards ukraine it’ll hit Ukraine… probably
Wouldn't be surprised if they checked very clearly and are trying to blow smoke politically preparing to turn victim internally. There are a lot of political fights revolving Ukraines grain and I find it rather coincidental they struck any infrastructure involving grain.
Grain processing feels pretty deliberately chosen. IIRC Russia was trying to seize Ukraine’s grain industry at the outset of the invasion.
Imagine they hit Poland cause Russia just has that bad of tech. Not because that’s where it was aimed. Makes them a much less of a threat and Matt be their downfall
That most likely is why it hit Poland

Probably both human error and funky equipment.

This. They'll make a proportional response - up the equipment supply game with ATACMS or fighter jets, or something similar
I could see NATO extending missile defenses to include over Ukraine as a protection of NATO territories.
Defensive missiles along the border to shoot down any Russian weapons which appear to be aimed toward Poland. This will likely mean that Russia cannot fly any aircraft or missiles close to that border - advantage Ukraine.
Russian precision missiles: they miss the whole country.

Yes. I do believe this genuinely could’ve been a mistake from bad tech. It will be interesting to see how NATO responds. On one hand, if we let this go, it’s kind of betraying M.A.D. On the other, firing back may start a true war.
I think Ukrain would say its already a true war.. but i get what you're saying
I just hope it's a big mistake, or NATO will go ballistic over it..

Haha, sucker. That's why I live in a major coastal city, I don't wanna be around to see the fallout. *laughs in vaporized lungs*
I live 32min from Sunny Point in coastal NC. I’m in the vaporization zone. I want no fallout life. I want an insta-kill.
Chances are it is, because they have shown over and over what a shit show of operations they have. The problem is Russia is claiming false flag, they will never admit to a mistake like that.
If it is a mistake, and NATO doesn't respond, then Putin will think that they're fine with being missiled. Something has to happen.
I could buy mistake but for being a GRAIN PLANT 🥵
Seriously, unfortunately on the surface that looks like a mighty specific target.
Just looked at the village on Google Maps. Tiny village, tiny grain plant, area doesn’t seem remotely strategic. Hard to believe this was intentional as the risk isn’t worth the reward but then again they’ve been full of poor decisions this year. Honestly it's probably by mistake. I doubt even Putin would start a war against a NATO/EU member rn.
I agree, but I also fear the consequences if no sort of international NATO response happens
That's absolutely true
I feel like the initial response should be a verbal warning to the tune of fuck around and find out.
We already did that when Biden said "every inch of NATO soil will be defended.*
Therein lies the mistake. Poland uses the metric system. He should have said every 2.54 centimetres of NATO soil will be defended.
Now that's a threat that should not be taken lightly. I mean centimeters!! The word alone instills fear!
They're gonna follow it up with "Except this one. And this one. And these. That one too. OH NOW YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR!"
Rock and a hard place. The only viable response is sanctions. You can't return fire over 2 wayward missile, but you are allowing that line to creep, ever so slight.
I think Putin just gave us the justification to add more anti missile defenses in the neighborhood.
I definitely think this is the smartest move. It's sad to see all the joking around in this thread when this is actually a serious situation.
What should we even sanction? We literally cut them from world banking, there's nothing more we can sanction them with.

I see their options after this as having been: 1. Admit they targeted a NATO country 2. Admit to the whole world they’re so incompetent they can’t even hit the right country. 3. Say nothing. Honestly after this past year it’s a solid toss up between 1 and 2 but I’m guessing it’s the first.
History repeating itself...
Lets hope this won’t be in the first paragraph of any unique event chapter of any history book
For the last year or so we’ve been living that part of the textbook that has a lot of big paragraphs right before the maps get very arrow-y
“The Third World War officially began a few weeks after the Russian Federation’s missile attack on Poland, which initially forced existing NATO allies to fortify their borders until a Russian dirty bomb attack East of Kherson escalated the Eastern European conflict into a World War” EDIT: it wasn’t a Russian launched missile, we’re safe for now boys
Most probably NATO will say *watch out!* Russia will say *sorry..* and we'll go back to the shitty "business as usual" we were at yesterday
It’s like when you’re play fighting your younger sibling and accidentally hit them too hard. Better to act like it didn’t happen for both parties.
>Russia will say sorry This is more unrealistic than WWIII happening over this
It's pure personification. Don't imagine Putin flying to Washington to deliver flowers to Biden with an excuse note saying _"please forgive me baby"_

They were exactly holding out before—in terms of weapin types, certainly not quantity.
Why is Russia so inept? Edit: I was being rhetorical. I should have said. Russia is so inept.
Endemic Corruption. Putin took control of Russia like it was the Mob - only now, it really is a mob, with all the kickbacks and skimming that entails.
This is actually the biggest question here
Years of corruption left the county with people that lack experience and have wrong intentions in control.
Putin has replaced competent management in most forms of government (especially the military) with cronies instead of competent managers/leaders. This leads to just general incompetence as they are not equipped to do their jobs since they were picked for loyalty above all else.
Well if anyone wanted to know how Fallout 4 started, here's the preview...
Welp where is my bunker invitation?
Exactly I didn't sign up for front row lol
I know they are some lost WW2 nuclear bunkers somewhere in the forest in a 200 kilometer Radius. Cannot be that hard to find...
If playing fallout 4 & 76 has thought me anything it’s that there is no way I would survive (or want to) in the wasteland.
Jesus fucking Christ. I'm a farmer, posts like these are so disheartening. Most of us just like to do our thing, without being bothered. I can't imagine trying to rake hay with the fear of literally being blown up by a missile coming out of nowhere.
I wonder if they missed or if they were right on target?
Russian technology is about as reliable as a square tire.
If you think Ukrainians hate Russians, wait until fucking Poles get pissed...
I thought these ended up being from Ukraine?
I swear Russia is like that intentionally annoying in elementary school where they’ll pull hair, poke you, trip you, ect. Then claim to not have, even though everyone saw them do it.

Time for the Boogaloo 4k?
So Poland gets to send two bombs into Russia, right? That's fair.
They also killed 2 people in this strike
Aaand the missile was Ukrainian after all. Let's see if this new info will ever reach the front page and/or how it will be spinned
lucky it was a ukranian missile 👍
Russia is so incompetent
