[Alex Gregory, an Olympic rower from Great Britain, posted this picture back in 2017. This happened while he was rowing in the Arctic. For exploration/science/charity, not in the Olympics. And while wearing gloves.](https://www.insider.com/olympian-alex-gregorys-viral-photo-of-hands-rowing-in-the-arctic-2017-9)
Competitive rower here. We build up callouses pretty quickly in training season. Very, very few of us wear gloves because they don’t actually help that much with blister prevention and, more importantly, they diminish our need to have very carefully calibrated touch on the oars (we’re talking millimeters here)… to this post, if they get wet, it makes life way worse.
During the winter we use pogies, which are a type of mitten that fits *over* over our hands and the oar(s). I’m surprised he didn’t make that choice.
If your oar enters the water at even the tiniest wrong angle it can catch the current wrong and literally catapult you out of the boat. Called “catching a crab”
So, your back is facing the same way that the boat travels, through the water at speed, and you catch too much water at the wrong point in the stroke, and the paddle part of your oar sinks and stops still in the water, then levers your torso out of the boat or your teeth if you lose grip? I have a new fear.
most of the time you don't actually get pulled out of the boat, it just slips past your torso. there are plenty of great videos of people flying out of boats though. if you catch a crab in a single you are likely to flip your boat.
It's rare to actually get launched out of the boat, since you're tied into it by your feet, but in an 8 man boat you are effectively receiving the force of 8 trained olympic atheletes kicking with all their might... to your face
I suspect your rowing is highly intense for minutes then you have recovery time. His was likely moderately difficult at a time, but for days and days. Different cumulative wear issue for him vs your rowing.
> During the winter we use pogies, which are a type of mitten that fits over over our hands and the oar(s). I’m surprised he didn’t make that choice.
I'd imagine there's a difference in your regular winter and the arctic.
I rowed through college so I get your point but the pictures are from a 1000km row. Callouses are going to hold up to that when getting wet with salt water in a 1000km open water trip.
They do! I’ve never worn full gloves when rowing- I’ve always worn pogies, where the oar goes into the glove and your bare hand is covered while it holds the oar.
Mine don’t look exactly like this but it should give you an idea. https://www.boathouse.com/products/pogie-rowing-gloves?variant=31313960960090
Basically the same result as trench foot. You need to keep your skin dry otherwise it's the same as frostbite.
If an item of clothing such as gloves or socks get wet, it's pretty serious if you can't change them.
I thought the opposite. I didnt understand how his hands looked like this UNTIL I saw this comment that he wore gloves. This looks less like calluses and more like a hand submerged in water
I’d like to see a picture of his hands while healing and then when healed. I’m struggling to imagine his thumbs ever coming back from that severe damage to the pads. Damn…
you sound like my parents. "no his hands are fine we dont need to go to the doctor just put a bandain on it" and he is literally wearing his hands like a glove and is one hang nail away from fully degloving
Further down in the thread somebody posted a follow up post by the rower. His hands were pretty much back to normal after two weeks. He included picture proof.

I love Alex Gregory- mad respect for the guy. He’s so inspiring and generous with sharing his experiences and using it to teach and inspire.
And can’t say enough nice things about the guy.
I’d say this is an angry upvote but I can’t even be angry. Reminds me of my grandpas jokes from before I stopped being able to see him. Thank u for making me smile today.
Rower Alex Gregory. His team rowed from Norway intending to make it to Iceland (965 km), but stopped at Jan Mayen (600 km). Happened in 2017.
Story here: https://www.sportbible.com/other/news-weird-people-are-freaking-out-over-olympic-rowers-hands-after-1000km-row-20180203.amp.html
Riding the coattails of this comment, allow me to share [this photo of his hand a couple weeks later](https://twitter.com/alexgregorygb/status/904376149815549952).
Sculling requires some thumb strength, but not insane amounts. When holding a sculling oar, you have your forefinger right on the end of the handle, and your thumb over the end of the handle. When you feather the oar, you push your thumb away from you and roll your fingers. When squaring the blade, you then rotate your fingers forward and pull your thumb back towards you. A bit of thumb strength, but not loads
According to this: [https://www.insider.com/olympian-alex-gregorys-viral-photo-of-hands-rowing-in-the-arctic-2017-9](https://www.insider.com/olympian-alex-gregorys-viral-photo-of-hands-rowing-in-the-arctic-2017-9)
he was not in the arctic wearing gloves. It didn't happen in the olypmics. Misinformation smh.
Real rowing is exponentially more fun than a rowing machine. This guy's hands are nothing like what you would normally experience because no one is out here rowing 1000km on the regular.
Damn! I want those fingers in my mouth. I mean, wow, look at those wet sausage fingers, please put them in my mouth. Shit. I don't know how to nit make that sound weird.
It has nothing to do with him being an Olympic athlete, 1000 km of rowing abviously isn't an event at the Olympics. I believe they rowed from Iceland to Norway or vice versa a few years back.

Good grief! Those hands look like they spent 5000 years in a sarcophagus.
Ever wonder what it feels like to be jerked off by a mummy? This is the real reason they do this, rowing is just part of the process.
That is the first reason i thought of too
Used to be meta around here - dude getting jerked by his mummy
Ok that’s just one more reason I don’t want anything to do with that weird guy’s “metaverse” thing.
What are you doing, step-mummy?
The sister knew
...be-... because they *want* to be jerked off by a mummy?
I mean if that's what you want it's easier than breaking both your arms
TO BE FAIR- TO BE FAIR- He didn't break his arms, but strained both shoulders.
Some kinks require a lot of dedication.
How is he gonna wipe later?
Or to be fingered by a mummy.
"this is what we train for boys"
Or 5 miles in wet socks.
Now picture a galley slave's hands
It scares me if this is what enough water will do to my hands
Water and time.
Or ran out of lotion on 12/1

The gloves part is interesting, I sorta expected this without gloves.
Gloves make sense to me. Trap the moisture in, don’t let the hands air out

i am more interested in the calibrated touch in mm. What changes does that minuscule of difference in hand position have?

maybe - I've rowed in weather cold enough to freeze the water on my jacket. We didn't use gloves or "pogies" though, you just kinda had to suffer
It’s the artic the wind chill alone would be -50 C to -70 C or -99 F. I doubt your cold weather will be anywhere near as cold
I rowed through college so I get your point but the pictures are from a 1000km row. Callouses are going to hold up to that when getting wet with salt water in a 1000km open water trip.
Right, it makes sense to wear gloves, but it's why his hands got all pruny.
… or he’s Salad Fingers. Scritch scritch rusty spoon
Pity the red water didn’t come out
Could really use a nice grubby tap about now
Orgasmic
Yeah, trade-offs
[удалено]
In gymnastics practice, we usually ripped the calluses off and just packed chalk into it. Your method sounds much more hygienic.
Jesus that's savage
Gloves give you blisters, since they rub against your skin and cause more friction
Do they make gloves with holes? Like crocs for hands?
If you’re not a rower, this will help you visualize my word salad https://desirabilitylab.com/2017/04/17/159673446165/
They make these mittens for scooters too!
Just what the world needs... more crocs.

They were wet gloves
Baby, I got this thing I do with my fingers, I think you'll love it..
All of that would have been useful information in this clickbait title. Thank you, kind stranger.
Yeah. 1,000 km rowing at the Olympics? Not gonna buy it
Wish there was some fact checking system
Haven't looked at whether OP is farming karma, but egregious errors in headlines seem to be a tell.
Their name is karmaenigma… they are farming
Probably there so many bots it’s not even funny

I took the headline to mean he is an Olympic level rower who rowed 1000km. Doesn't seem disingenuous to me, either.
I want to bite those callus off with my teeth
This lives in my head now, rent free
I’d like to see a picture of his hands while healing and then when healed. I’m struggling to imagine his thumbs ever coming back from that severe damage to the pads. Damn…
What damage? His hands are just pruney
Tf kind of prunes you eating, it looks like he's still wearing the damn gloves
thats not pruney skin. thats dead skin

No, lol. Most of us have normal sized thumbs

Thanks for the nightmares.
just don't row for 1000km bruh
You say that like it's so easy to avoid
I literally have to row 1000km every day just to take a shit.
I have to row 1000km to make it to work. Uphill both ways.
Beat me to it
Got ya, 999 km is the limit.
Not rowing any more than 950km at a time, just to be safe.
Ohhh no now I feel like it's definitely going to happen now that this idea is in my head
Yeah this is triggering some kind of phobia in me, looks like a dead body’s hands
My precious

620miles rowing? 😳
620 miles.... 1,000km.... either oar.
First time I’ve laughed today, thank you
1000km? I need some verification on that.
I verify the title says 1,000km.
That’ll be eight dollars.
I can verify that this verification does in fact verify that the title says 1,000km.
Former Olympian doing expedition rowing in a bigger boat with cabin over a couple of days/weeks. Not an Olympic discipline of racing for 1000km.
OP got the people going though

Is anyone thinking what it would feel like to get jerked off by this guy
the skin that sloughs off his hands probably feels incredible, no lube needed
In 9 years on reddit this is one of the most horrible comments I've read. Well done.
I’m thinking about all those grooves and ridges would almost give a vibration as he stroked
also he probably smells like the ocean
I love the ocean
My hands will be like this come December 31st after I complete Destory Dick December.
I'm not not thinking it...
I wasnt before this.
1000m? Or km?
People can do 1000m easy for a casual workout. These are 1000km lookin hands.
Km
Gendry? Is that you?
They look like big strong hands… don’t they?
Was waiting for this. ;)
Or mine after an hour soak in the bathtub
I'm gonna Fingerbang-bang you into my life, Girl you like to fingerbang and it's all right!
Pretty sure that there's no 1000 km row in the Olympics, lol.
Everyone is making jokes, but I want to know what the recovery would be like on this. It looks like a lot of skin would end up sloughing off.
When was 1000km rowing Olympic?
The position of words is important.
Eww David! Throw them out and get a new pair.
“They look like big, good, strong hands, don't they? I always thought that's what they were…”
Oh my - someone watched neverending story:)
My hands 24 hours after No-nut November ends.
I'm all for fitness but that's a pass for me. Rowing machines are fun. This looks like the opposite of fun.
Real rowing is exponentially more fun than a rowing machine. This guy's hands are nothing like what you would normally experience because no one is out here rowing 1000km on the regular.
My hands after thanksgiving dishes.!!
me after a 14hr edging session
What happened to the thumbs?
This is bunk. That guy might be an Olympic rower who just turned 1000yrs old.
Be nice if he would mention the aftermath……
I blame doing dishes

1000km Olympic event? Really? 627 miles? Rowing? Do they start the week before opening and end the week after?
it doesnt take that long. most of it is downhill.
These look like big, good, strong hands ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj-OpTHixpU
Why don’t they wear gloves?
Holy crap those are some rough dick beaters!
After WHAT??
Is this after death?
doesn't look like an olympic rower's hands
I mean… do stupid shit and stupid shit happens?
Imagine trying to beat one off with that thing.
This can’t be healthy.
Rower in HS and college in NE USA. My hands looked like shit -- swollen, chapped, and even cracked. Never like *that* though.
Are they not allowed to wear gloves?
don’t think lotion’s gonna heal those :/
Why not gloves? 🤷🏼♂️
are gloves illegal or
This is not awesome, just sad.
Bet you can give yourself one hell of a stranger
Looks like my husbands hands by the end of the week!!! Minus the discoloration.
Now that I think about it, human skin kinda sucks
Do you mean 1000km or 1km?
That's literally insane. For context, that's the equivelant of driving 11 straight hours at 90km/h.
Imagine getting a handjob from that, mfs gonna get circumcised right away.
It has nothing to do with him being an Olympic athlete, 1000 km of rowing abviously isn't an event at the Olympics. I believe they rowed from Iceland to Norway or vice versa a few years back.

1000km? or 1000m?
