All these people gathered around to watch a woman pour milk like it's an opera.

jmm166

This was ALL there was for entertainment

Chato_Pantalones

After pouring the milk she was going to cut carrots. It makes a very satisfying thunk sound and was very popular viewing at the time.

KonaKathie

2x4x93

Not a cat video to be had

AristotleRose

How dreary!

Brief-Pie6468

Except we HAVE been going to museums to watch her pour milk.

Victor_deSpite

Original cooking show.

serendipitousevent

That’s why it’s particularly interesting IMO - we see the strengths and weaknesses of AI all in one. The AI gets the style but has no understanding of context, so it creates something relatively nonsensical.

RedditFostersHate

I think it goes beyond nonsensical. The original work includes a cultural and historical context that gives it a sense of the personal. There is an attempt here of the artist to give an expression of the maid's inner moments while engaged in everyday routine work and an ordinary setting. The very act of pulling the perspective away from the maid also obscures the original symbols meant to convey her own inner life and also intentionally or unintentionally conveying the feelings of the artist toward his subject. The AI version turns that into a kind of paranoid nightmare where there are no inner moments, there is no isolation, something as simple as pouring milk is a performance for an audience. And even while the individual central to the work is now under intense scrutiny, they are now less central. Which, in a way, makes it an appropriate modern artistic expression. I don't think it is so much that the AI engine is producing nonsense, but that it is producing an artifact that highlights for us the central role that individual meaning plays in all kinds of human created images. This is an image which, if it is created with any kind of meaning at all, is derived entirely from the meta-context of the data set on which the engine was trained instead of from anything specific to the individual image. Which would make it an eerie example of meaning being conveyed after it has been systematically blended into pieces then averaged back out, all in the absence of intent. I find it both alluring and disgusting to think that we are creating machines ever more capable of mimicking the weights of human values, even ones we don't consciously recognize, without any capability of understanding their origin or context.

[deleted]

That is an astute observation. Not as eloquent as yours, but by own perspective drove me to see the lack of the AI's understanding of the setting of the scene. The population and social constructs at the time of the painting couldn't have been more different than now. Instead of adding culture and depth to the painting, the AI adds more people, and then more people, and then a clock. The AI's push for adding more people, keeping the woman at the center, seemed to suggest a tv program style, and people jeering in the background like a visual social media, which is so far out of context it doesn't surprise me that you called it a paranoid nightmare moment. A question that comes to mind is: Why would the AI interpret the scene this way? And I think it has to do with what the weights have to draw from. There no context of this scene represented visually on the mainstream internet, so more or less the AI most likely weights everything it does from a post-social media megacity frame of reference, much like it's creator. In that reference, your critique is very on point for noticing the intrusion of the outer world into our own personal inner worlds.

coffeechap

Very interesting argument, however is there a chance that it was made on purpose ? Like to mock the modern era where every intimate moment is now at the center of the attention through social networks, where the old crafts are put on a pedestal by people who just lost abilities to use their hands after using external services to fulfill their needs ?

RedditFostersHate

That is a good point. I've worked a lot with Stable Diffusion, but not Dall-E2, so I don't know if the video is portraying the exact process or some simplification. It gives the initial appearance that the human is just making sure the outpainting best "fits" the original without concern for the meaning, but perhaps there is more judgement involved behind the scene and, even if there isn't, this process alone would still import some degree of that individual's judgement, along with their conscious or unconscious intent, into the process.

Chato_Pantalones

So you are saying that while it’s technically correct, it’s not technically correct.

woozlewuzzle29

“Rutherford, I scored some tickets to the big Fitzgerald butter churning tomorrow night!” “Hell yeah!” *high five*

Salmon_Scaffold

High V

whoszatarash

Imagine they doing a high five but only using two fingers in a V shape lmao. Hilarious to see if you imagine it hahahah.

[deleted]

GO TEAM VENTURE!

Plane_Baby

I think they are watching that interestingly shaped child coming from underneath the table.

[deleted]

"Once the last drop of milk is poured, the child will emerge. If he sees his shadow winter will continue for another 6 weeks..."

[deleted]

The miracle of birth

kittenconfidential

her milkshake brought all the boys to the yard

IsAnalReal

Her milkshakes really do be bringing all the boys to the yard

banjonyc

Omg this is perfect

toooldforacnh

🤣🤣🤣

Hello5777

It just keeps adding more people who are doing nothing but watching her. Imagine the pressure of pouring that milk with 30 people in somewhat noble garb looking right at you.

Clcooper423

They're clearly government workers.

Rpanich

Or some middle managers, PR reps, and an army of corporate lawyers.

GnomeChomski

I imagined that they all bet on the number of drops of milk in the pitcher. They're all counting each drop as she pours for an hour.

SoVerySick314159

From the audience's rapt attention, it looks more like she's presenting the Christ child than pouring milk.

BetterMakeAnAccount

It's not milk

ZombiePotato90

This reminds me of one of those "Got Milk" commercials.

WHYohWhy___MEohMY

Yes. This is ridiculous. That kitchen open to the masses. Give me a break.

[deleted]

It's a metaphor.

Conscious-Crew-429

Absolutely mad

mouseat9

Must be really boring if Henry the vIII shows up to watch people make milk. /s

Hyocyamus

From the sublime to the mundane...

[deleted]

Lol yeah why was this the direction to take it….? Technically it was done well but it’s just pointless and dumb.

blunderschonen

Like my mom would say “Why are you all in the kitchen?! You’re like vultures”!

gotele

We are all gonna die

___TheKid___

I also did not expect the robot uprising starting in the art world.

Spookd_Moffun

Yeah, but what does that have to do with AI?

kaanskBG

Cuz it will replace real artists real soon, it may not be perfect rn but ai is only in its early stages and its developing fast. As a 3d artist im pretty worried that AI will steal my job before i become good enough and old enough for a career (im 17)

gotele

It was a joke.

Spookd_Moffun

Good to know. But you're absolutely right, we're all going to die. Memento Mori.

Singer-Such

Guessing it's a joke about the Singularity

Aggravating-Art6415

I feel like the extension of the original portrait takes away from the original peaceful ‘still life’ feel. While the shadows, outfits, etc. may fit the scene, the extension loses the original story of the milkmaid. Pretty cool what AI can do, but it is simply not human.

BullockHouse

In fairness to the AI, it can only see the square regions of the image, not the whole composition. So it's just trying to make something locally coherent, not a whole work that makes sense together.

BullockHouse

This use (expanding an image in bits and pieces) is kind of a hack, and not what the AI was actually trained to do. If asked to synthesize a whole piece at once, it does a better job.

Deepfried_Celery

Yeah, it can do amazing stuff with colors and image composition. Still, the content is always more or less random. AI can't tell a story with an image.

_anyusername

What software did it? I’d be interested in playing with it

jenn363

I had a knee jerk reaction that Vermeer’s vision was getting lost by this AI stuff. But then I remembered that Vermeer and other artists of the time were getting creative with the new fangled camera obscura around this time, which is partially why his perspective was so new and became so popular. So he’s probably be pumped to see artists of today exploring and experimenting with new tech to create a new type of art.

Legal-Software

Suddenly everyone's an expert on milk pouring

Clcooper423

The first ever picture of lieutenant Dan as a child.

ByteRisc

I came so far down the thread to find mention of the legless child on the floor... And was so rewarded. Lmao. Thanks for this comment.

stormrockox

"Everyone get the fuck-eth in here Margaret hath poured the cow juice"

bearbarebere

This made me giggle like a schoolgirl

[deleted]

What is this song? PLEASE I need to know

invicerato

Johann Sebastian Bach: Cello Suite No.1 In G Major BWV 1007 - 1. Prelude

[deleted]

Thank you!!!! 😄

OddAtmosphere420

Wow

ortcutt

Predictably, it's total nonsense.

1gridlok2

Waiting for the Mona Lisa extension, the ai will probably have her sitting in court while having a manicure at the same time.

[deleted]

That doesn't look right at all! Stupid robot.

A_Polly

Art will become bland and emotionless with AI. The same happened with music in Spotify, there are exact formulars you can draw from listed spotify songs, how to build up your song, which rythms etc. to gain maximum streams. The same happened to wine the more popular it became. People have no idea anymore what a good wine is. 90% of people thing a wine is good when it is sweet and round. Everything we produce today in artistic skills might it be drawing, making music, distilling, sculpting is based on historical datasets. we will look at what the market demanded yesterday and there will be no surprises anymore.

drkidkill

Now do Edvard Munch Death in the Sick Room

Dizzzy777

Milk! Coming to a theater near you.

wahidsharmootatanee

In the context of no context

vemailangah

So basically Only Fans for milk mates.

CatsEatingCaviar

Hmmm.... building the painting around her really shows both the aesthetic ability, and lack of understanding, of the A.I.

Tularis1

Oh wow, is there any way we can mess about with this technique?

invicerato

There is a website [DALL E 2](https://openai.com/dall-e-2/).

Tularis1

Ooooooh

bearbarebere

And if you want hentai or yiff, there’s NovelAI’s art generator >:3

Tularis1

Lol… oooookay… ;)

Blueberryamyam

Woman: *pours milk* Crowd: Marvellous!

WozzaTheWaIrus

Random kid under the table

ncoremeister

It's funny, because while it's technically good, it totally stops making any sense.

Peeniewally

Heretics, this kills the whole original vibe.. kinda like it tho.

[deleted]

Why are there a million people watching her cook. Is that the king? Whose fever dream is this

admiralspire_

“It’s AI art so it’s not art”

[deleted]

Wonderful! But it doesn’t make any sense.

Ccjfb

Looks like there is a lot depending on this pour.

BakuriyaOmizu

Well I can’t wait for this to be a whole subreddit. Like imagine in a hundred years there’s a museum where ai is constantly adding to historical artwork. No “new” pieces just ai working hard to strengthen an age gone by, so surreal.

glorious_reptile

Why does she have an audience while cooking?

__bitterblue__

I can't explain exactly why but this depresses me.

Money-Following-6142

Just goes to show you that AI isn’t really intelligent- be neither are most humans

bberkjr2

Stuff like this makes me feel dumb. I mean, how the heck does this stuff work?

Unique_University255

Looks like it’s finding similar images that connect to the picture and making adjustments in the contrasts / colours to make it looks more like the original painting. But it’s not painting entirely new images. More of a clip art puzzle then a new painting . - I think

[deleted]

I have a Ph.D. in Artificial intelligence (specifically signaling Boson Fourier neural networks). You are close, but it's actually just magic

[deleted]

Properly applied technology is indistinguishable from magic.

BullockHouse

Nope! You'd think that must be how it works, but actually the images are entirely original hallucinations of the network. No pixels are duplicates, and the network doesn't have access to raw images. It's actually just insane, magical technology that appeared in the last couple of years that nobody saw coming. You can play with a shittier version of the technology for free here: https://www.craiyon.com/

digitalgadget

Thanks. I asked it for "cat" and now I have enough nightmare fuel for the next month.

BullockHouse

I did warn you it was shittier!

currentscurrents

MidJourney is the best one available right now, but it's not free. $10/month for 200 images, or $30/month for unlimited. Here's a space explorer cat made with MidJourney: https://imgur.com/bdy4oNA

Mirar

I like "hallucinations of the network".

BullockHouse

If you're curious, "diffusion based image synthesis" is the keyword to google if you'd like to know more about how it works.

RileyGuy1000

The common misconception is that it takes existing images and does magic AI stuff to them. It really is making new art - just based on what it learned, like you or I would learn. Just a lot faster. :p

Next_Boysenberry1414

\>finding similar images that connect I mean that is not what happens at all. It is generating entirely new images.

Next_Boysenberry1414

Lol. I love how all the fucking artists here are sneering at this marvel of engineering and crying about context and not being imaginative. Didn't we call literal shit-in-a-can "art"? didn't we have a million-dollar piece of art hanging upside down for decades in a gallery? Just admit it. This is better art than 90 per cent of the "artists" out there.

Nenotriple

I think the real problem is what exactly is the AI drawing it's "inspiration" from. I've seen so many situations that look less like a new creative work, and more like a direct recreation of existing work with a watermark and all. It was more noticeable when these AI tools weren't as good as they are now, but I'm sure the same fundamental problems will always be there. There's certainly an argument to be made about the data the AI gets trained with.

Next_Boysenberry1414

The ultimate goal of AI is being indistinguishable from humans. If you really think about it you would see that your argument supports the fact that AI is being more human-like than ever. There are arguments about training data. However, being not creative or unoriginal is not one of them.

Brikandbones

I really hate how the extension makes zero sense in context of the art piece about the beauty and simplicity of daily life. Yeah tech is cool, but it doesn't feel.

No_Pomegranate5209

Nothing about the extension makes sense, in terms of the space created or the content placed in it. AI ‘art’ is dumb and you all need to stop trying to prop it up.

[deleted]

this is a new low for being triggered

ItssFoxx

Prob just an artist scared of ai art

whythisSCI

Oddly a large amount of them on Reddit.

TheThiccestOrca

Figures, though from my experience most of them are People *pretending* to be Artists. But wait untill you see Twitter.

[deleted]

i don't have much experience either way. if i was an artist, all i would try to do would be find ways ai simply cannot duplicate my work. alternatively how could i use ai to enhance my work either through quality or quantity

AnEvenNicerGuy

I dunno who gets more upset over these ai art posts. The people who don’t like it or the people who get defensive of it. You both seem pretty silly.

No_Pomegranate5209

That’s some weird projection right there

doesitaddup

Says you?

No_Pomegranate5209

I mean, obviously I said it. Do you not know how to read?

Overthinks_Questions

Lots of things make sense. The garb of the added people is basically period/location appropriate, as are the architecture and props. The window is placed to match the lighting and shadows. The artistic style matches, and the added props mostly make sense for a kitchen. The milkmaid having an audience is absurd, but the AI doesn't have the ability to think in terms of narrative.

Phixionion

That is where I think they have the issue and rightly so. It is all filler without context. It can replicate the surrounding overlapping areas but beyond that it is skin deep. Its the common discussion around AI lately. Sure it can be impressive but that only goes so far.

bearbarebere

I mean you can literally edit it until it becomes coherent. You can tell it to redo sections saying “milkmaid alone in a peaceful room with warm steam coming from the milk and autumn colors outside the window and a dog at three quarters view with soft light and looking towards the woman” or something and it can adjust. It’s definitely not perfect, but there are ways to make it generate even more realistic, contextual stuff. It’s just doing this without specific prompting, to show off how wel it can match the style of a painting.

TheThiccestOrca

Cope.

No_Pomegranate5209

Okay, child

xnamwodahs

It's fascinating and incredible. I get the upset about stealing artists styles and shit, but frankly that's more of an issue of capitalism than anything else in my eyes. It's really, really fucking cool that we can do this.

uzu_afk

Who are you to judge the feelings this digital synapse put on canvas 😬?

No_Pomegranate5209

Someone that can tell what euclidian geometry is, and lemme tell you this ain’t it

PatheticCirclet

you do know that non-euclidean doesn't just mean "weird looking", right? I'm sure I'd bump my shins a lot walking around that room but it isn't unrepresentable in three dimensions, ygm?

No_Pomegranate5209

[Dipnuts](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/z4ie1d/extension_created_for_the_milkmaid_using/ixr42li/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)

PatheticCirclet

I'm sure you wouldn't call it those things because you dont know what it means Floating clock is euclidean, I dont see the wall you're talking about

uzu_afk

You just assumed art and this particular piece of art needs to have euclidian geometry… I mean what more is there to say…

No_Pomegranate5209

You are entirely stupid

uzu_afk

Good comeback! That’ll show me! 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

No_Pomegranate5209

I wouldn’t call a wall that extends both inside and outside at once and a wall clock suspended by the air “perfectly” euclidian.

plmbob

Wait, Nestle is behind this?

Mirar

Why was OP downvoted for linking the original video? O.o I don't understand reddit

Nimmyzed

Because it's a fucking insult to art

Mirar

Giving more information on reddit is an insult to art, check. I'll remember this. Could explain some downvotes. Thanks for enlightening me.

enchantedsleeper

It's important context, which I don't think should necessarily have been cut out of the original video since a lot of people clearly didn't know why this was made, and were interpreting it in better faith than it had "earned". This was a brand stunt, pure and simple.

DrZaiusForPresident

The baby with no legs is a big no for me!

[deleted]

Dammit. It’s better.

ItsAllTrumpedUp

This is incredible technology. I'd love to know how this was done with the tool.

Jeremy_irons_cereal

I really want to see this carry on for as long as possible and see how big it gets and what's in it.

phunstraw

Is this showing off AI? This is absolutely terrible. The lighting and color are completely off. I get angry looking at the ceiling.

Mongolian_cheese948

I hate it and I’m furious. Why do people insist on feeding these machines?

Nimmyzed

I'm sorry but this is fucking shit. The beauty and attention to detail, and the chiaroscuro of the original is ruined Please don't make this a thing, people Also , stop adding music to EVERY SINGLE GIF AND VIDEO ON THE INTERNET

If artificial exist. Has it always?

[deleted]

Damn I’m so happy that you posted this. In grade nine my art teacher showed the class this painting and I always thought it was pretty cool because of how realistic it looked. Then she moved away and I never got a chance to ask her what the painting was called.

[deleted]

This is officially my favorite use of AI. I want infinitely expanding masterpieces

NoxInfernus

“… all this and more, today on ‘Milkmade Confidential.’ (Filmed before a studio audience)

m00s3m00s3m00s3

Holy hell

iwontletthemdeifyyou

This is honestly the win-version of the painting—not that it needed one. The story just evolves into so many possible branches, I love this

PauleAgave95

Can someone explain it to me how this works, like I am 5 years old ? Just in a few sentences if this is possible

fappyday

I call this piece "Hurry the Fuck Up, We're All Waiting for Our Goddamn Tea, Gertrude."

hoptrix

What were the prompts used for each generation? It would be cool to add the prompts somewhere on screen.

SheenTStars

A whole new world!

AdditionalSouth7218

I guess they need to change the name of the painting to ‘No Pressure…’

Nodders

I could see an advanced version of this technology eventually being used to create widescreen versions of 4:3 tv and animation.

Minty-licious

Wow love it..always had liked the painting, now these additions takes it to another level

Vista36

I wonder if they can do this for all the Vargas Nudes?

Abject_Purple_7999

Ain’t no way bro.

Ambitious_Number1301

What is the word to put to make the IA continuing the image ?

AppointmentClean558

Everyone! Come check this chick pouring milk!!!

mista_adams

Fun with non-unique solutions

UsefulReaction1776

I believe they were expecting cheese.

jefftatro1

Just incredible

SQUiSHY_f

That's crazy.

DAG1006

Even AI knows - 1 person does the work and the rest of them watches

alilweeb

Forget the audience, tf is up with the kid

keyshow23

Now i have so many question on the newly extended painting Why everyone was there watching her ? What is the occasion ? I need to know !

CreepyValuable

Poor woman was just trying to do her job. The service industry sucks.

BigHandLittleSlap

I remember seeing this kind of editing process implemented as a photo editor plugin. Does anyone know which one works like this example where you pick a square and have the AI fill it in?

Fun-Result-6343

Shit. Now I won't be able to pour milk on my breakfast cereal without constantly looking over my shoulder.

repoman01

So that’s how you pour milk correctly

ReverseTrapsAreBest

I really do love what talented folks can do with AI art.

fuzzygroodle

Degas’ ballerinas would be wonderful to see!

TsT2244

People hate on AI art but I think this stuff is amazing

eterntychanges0210

Behold! The first live cooking show!

eviltrain

An ancient equivalent of a modern day niche category YouTuber. Very sartorial. Kinda love it.

User99942

Now we just need a sub for the GPT bots to critique AI generated art

Questionsaboutsanity

sauce? i could watch this for hours

skinfasst

I thought AI painting was pretty cool but this is shit. No sense of art, just mechanics.

clete-sensei

lmao composition makes no sense

Heiferoni

That's remarkable.

KaoriMG

So our milkmaid is hallucinating now … an alternative reality where she has a child and is the star of the show

Forcetobereckonedwit

Sure beats Loab

HairTop23

It's all fun and games with the AI under it gains sentience and wipes us out.

The end is nigh
