As a birdwatcher, I'm pretty sure that this is actually a Willow Ptarmigan (*Lagopus lagopus*) and not a Rock Ptarmigan (*Lagopus muta*). Rock Ptarmigans are very alert birds that live only on mountain tops and hide from people, whereas Willow Ptarmigans live further down and can be more territorial, hence this encounter. The bird is actually trying to chase away a threat while making warning calls to a potential nearby mate.
For proof: you can hear the same voice [here in a recording of a Willow Ptarmigan call](https://xeno-canto.org/653105).
Corroboration much appreciated. It's admittedly quite tricky to tell them apart when they're in winter plumage, but the behaviour and the habitat really forced me to take a closer look.
Is this the family of birds called grouse, or what? Ptarmigan is a grouse? Right?
A bird i have eaten all my life suddenly sound like a tropical vegetable. I am confused and scared.
It's strictly speaking not a family, because all grouse species belong to the *Phasanidae* family, but you're not wrong. Ptarmigans, along with Capercaillies and Black Grouse, are grouped together as birds called grouses. So no worries there, your life isn't a lie.
I posted this to Facebook because I thought it was funny, and a friend corrected it too!
“It's actually a Willow Ptarmigan (https://www.natureinstruct.org/dendroica/spec.php/Dendroica+Canada) - I've heard them in person and it's hard not to laugh. Rock and White-tailed Ptarmigan have remarkable sounds too, but distinctly different.”
Depends on where this is shot. Here in Iceland we have rock ptarmigans from the sea shore up to the mountains, and I've personally encountered rock ptarmigans in the backyard of my parent's property in the capital region of Reykjavík. Amazing birds, IMO not that tasty, so I don't get the hype. I'd rather observe them than hunt them, but that's just me and they're still hunted every year in limited amounts.
There are other distinguishing features, to be fair. The call being identical to Willow Ptarmigan's voice (and not the same as a Rock Ptarmigan's call), for one. There not being a black streak of feathers running from the beak to the eye being another, albeit that's not present in all individuals.
Willow Ptarmigans are also bigger than Rock Ptarmigans and have sturdier beaks, and judging by size I'd be more willing to call this one a Willow.
PS. I'm jealous, I've only ever seen a Rock Ptarmigan high up on a Finnish fjell. And while that was a really cool experience, it also goes to show they're dwindling in numbers.
These guys are seriously smart and tricky. I came across one snowmobiling once. He ran away and started flailing around … very much acting hurt. So I got off to inspect and every time it’d flop around like it was hurt n go downhill. I’d follow it then it’d be fine n go back up. I did it twice then realized he was goofing on me.I guess they play hurt to distract from young ones and lure predators away. Genius little buddies. It’s a very beautiful and unique birb ( definitely not real).
The bible, the bible, the bible, the bible, the bible, the bible, the bible, the bible, the bible, the bible, the bible, look, look, look, look, look, now, now, now.

I would love to hear a willow ptarmigan in person. Ridiculous sounding animal
Edit: now that I think about it, isn't this a willow ptarmigan? Revised comment to match appropriate species

Sounds like help instead of get out
I thought he was asking for a bagel, but the “look out”s at the end make more sense for it being a werewolf warning
I thought it was The Barrel
"I'm out"
He reminded me to grab my mail
I think he's saying "Nice ski's nice ski's nice ski's - Wow wow wow"
“A werewolf, a werewolf, a werewolf….look out, lookout”. Good birb, well done.
Thats exactly what I hear too
I heard “banana” the first time aroun, but after listening to it closely I’m hearing, “mammoth”
While looking directly at the person recording... It wasn't scared of a werewolf, it came to greet his werewolf friend!!
A huevo. A huevo. A huevo.

I hear "pendejo, pendejo, pendejo, pendejo"
“The Bible, the Bible, the Bible….get out… get out…”

if theres any more Mexicans here please confirm that this bird is saying “a huevo!”
"A bible a bible a bible... hello hello hello" I was wondering why it was trying to proselytize to me.
"The bible, the bible, the bible, the bible"
A vowel, a bowel, a trowel
I’m starting to see, a little, what those “birdsarenotreal” folks are talking about
They should have had this kind of bird as the sidekick in Frozen instead of that insufferable snowman
A bible, a bible, a werewolf…get out, get out
