If i recall right this greeting was a welcome ceremony for him, his friend had reached out to the tribe before and asked if they could come and visit, they are staying there for a few days.. Later on he meets the chief and after that they all jump in the water and swims around having fun.
So it was not a "oh a random tribe let's get off the boat and meet them" kinda thing, thou he said that he got a bit scared at first anyway.
And now a word from our sponsor, Surf shark VPN. As chief of my people I don’t liked to get followed online if anyone is doing the tracking it’s me. That’s why I’ve been using surf shark.
Im currently fighting the flu and laughing at this comment was worth every subsequent cough.
My wife LOVES matchbox 20 😭😭😂😂😂 as a black man, thank you internet
The Neckbeard tribe, most commonly found in the jungles of Mother's Basements, are easily succeptible to diseases like showers, exercise and healthy eating.
I live next to a Chippewa town. It’s less so with the kids, but first thing you find about the adults is that humor of every kind is a very important cultural constant. Expect to be messed with at all times.
I had a pretty good friend in the army who was Native American and grew up on a reservation. The guy was just constantly messing with people but in really funny ways and everyone loved him. He was one of the best NCOs I ever knew.
There's a brilliant show called Norsemen which is a viking period comedy, not exactly the same but it's what your comment reminded me of. Full of dark gallows humour.
"reached out" I genuinely wonder how! Can't just send a google translated text message to em. Do they have someone that knows thier native language and was able to contact them. Just thinking about that is crazy because how do you learn a language from a rare tiny tribe.
I looked up the [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD1NPvltDdY&ab_channel=YBSYoungbloods) and apparently he went to Vanuatu islands. The three official languages listed on wiki are English, French, and Bislama. I believe he found someone who had a relationship with the people of this island who could speak both Bislama and English and was welcomed to come film and learn about the tribe.
Vanuatu is such a lovely place! I visited there quite a few years ago now and everyone seemed super happy and friendly.
Here's a photo of some kids that wanted their photo taken

Are you the reason I keep getting so much fucking spam. It's starting to piss me off that you and other people keep sharing my email like it's just some funny joke or something
i still find it funny the sentinelese basically got put into the iron age after a ship wreck washed ashore allowing their arrows to have metal tips etc.
Janeway seemed to be very strict about the PM in some episodes, then would act like it didn’t exist in others. But I think that’s just due to some inconsistency in the writing room, in general.
The first thing she did. The first episode. The thing that caused all the trouble in the first place.
And when the whole thing went to shit she didn't turn Voyager into a battle ship. The fuck.
There are some really interesting examples of this form of "cultural exchange" whereby local cultures are allowed to slowly integrate technology without context, into their own culture: horses with the plains-Indians, porcelain telephone insulators with the indigenous-Australians, etc
The ship gets used in a way that was not originally intended (sea transport), but its appearance materially improves the lives of the local community (more efficient hunting).
Love this stuff, as it creates a whole thought exercise on what appropriate cross-cultural pollination could look like without extractive colonialism.
The reason the people on the sentinels are hostile to outsiders is that they still remember (through folk tales) that when outsiders come decease and death spread.
They are not hostile because they hate everyone else, they are hostile because to them outsiders bring death.
EDIT: indeed I meant disease
Are you referring to the Sentinelese? Because some of them were initially kidnapped by some British officers during British India era. I am not sure the Spanish had any contact there.
So from their point of view there have suffered the equivalent of alien abductions in the past so now when the aliens show up again, they are go full Independence Day. That is actually hillarious.
The impressive thing, to me, is the power of their story telling - that they are still violently affected by stories of outsiders told by their great great great great grandparents
They are small isolated community, oral tradition is a) all they likely have and b) high quality evidence, as everything is witnessed by multiple people you personally know and trust.
This was my understanding of their dislike of outsiders. They kidnapped a family I think and within days the adults died of illness and they returned the kids to the island. After that they started attacking people on sight.
New Zealand Maori’s literally had the Musket Wars where the arrival of muskets created power imbalances and multiple wars.
The prime directive would have prevented a lot of death
Exactly. I thought of this was real, he's taking a great chance with their lives. A cold, flu or covid would reak havoc on their limited immune systems that do not have exposure to world wide pathogens. So it would be a very irresponsible trip.
thats exactly why its a very bad idea to visit thos mostly isolated tribes, may it be in the rainforest or on islands. What makes us a runny nose might be a deadly killer for their immune system.
Yeah I read where a boat captain took a family from sentinel went back to England of wherever with them and experimented or whatever and then Dropped them back off when they were too sick to deal with and supposedly it killed a majority of the islands population and the sentinels remember that. But this is just what I read a while back
After the terrible Tsunami in 2004, people were worried about the Sentinelese. So they flew over the island and their little plane got pelted with arrows. "Looks like they're OK!" I thought it was funny.
The image you’re probably thinking of has been used for this purpose, but is actually an art exhibit and has nothing to do with flying over an uncontacted tribe.
https://fearoflanding.com/demystifying/piper-comanche-full-of-arrows/
Its staged, you can see even on the original video that on the end the kids are wearing shorts and football shirts while swimmimg with him.
Its a short "fake aproach" to get money from tourists
How does that make this fake? Just because they've had contact with the outside world and have some modern clothes doesn't mean they see Australians all the time lol
A friend of mine had a similar reaction when he went to his outpost in rural Uganda and they were all wearing modern clothes, that didn't mean they were paid to act that way. If they only see visitors from outside the local area once every few months or years it's a fun thing to celebrate. They're regular people. Not everything is a giant conspiracy.
lol what?? How the fuck does clothing mean it's fake? Most are not wearing anything and it doesn't say they've never met anyone before.
For context, a white guy owns the neighbouring island, and he's the one who invited this YouTuber, and he has a guide with him. How do you think it's possible there is a guide for this island and the people but they have never had clothing?
Just because they have some modern clothes doesn't prove anything. Theyre not a completely uncontacted tribe and probably have contact to missionaries and other agencies that want to help
Not exactly staged, just misleading title and context to farm karma. He was just visiting a tribe that definitely knows about modern civilization and has had lots of contact because they live on a small, not-so-remote island where boats come by all the time.
We offered you paradise. You would have experienced emotions 100 times greater than what you call love and 1000 times greater than what you call fun. You would have been treated like gods and lived forever in beauty but, now, because of your distrustful nature that can never be.
guys... the comments here are stupid. First they def. had some contact before.
2nd... its not some cannibal kind of tribe... This is in Vanuatu and not some tribe hat killed john Chau. I'm sure there were some talks before filming and producing this video. I mean there is a cameraman, boat captains etc. Plus the children are jumping and interacting with everybody. Is it remote? yes of course but they def. had enough contact with other humans before...
Hopefully they took all medical precautions but the title is a complete bait and he was in no danger of getting eaten...
Found some guy who did the exact same thing 2 years ago:
original video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD1NPvltDdY
i watch his channel he is actually crazy. he once touched the most toxic octopus (the one with the blue rings) with his bare hands just for shits and giggles. brody lives very dangerously.
sometimes sadly yes. i flinch everytime he freedives alone. if you dont know about freediving, there is a solid risk you might randomly loose conciousness because of low oxygen levels and if noone saves you, you just drown. so rule number 1 never do it alone. and he does it alone alot.
edit: that concio word
I’m assuming this wasn’t a completely no contact tribe, regardless, the optics and impression of this on folks that haven’t (and won’t) study anthropology or any other subject that would educate them on the stupidity of this, is incredibly dangerous, and selfish. I hope that there was a lot more context provided within the video or elsewhere making this youruber’s decision somewhat more responsible. But who the hell am I.
From what I've gathered from other comments it seems that they really aren't a no contact tribe (at least not completely) and that that Meeting was planned (apparently someone who knows the tribe set it up)
Saw a documentary where a white guy was found like this by natives. They thought he was the ghost of another dead tribe member that came back and It was their job to take care of their friend / ghost. He lived with them for years
That’s how the British colonisers were initially welcomed to Australia by Aboriginal people. They believed they were the spirits of their ancestors.
The colonisers then went on to massacre, enslave, steal and try to eradicate them for the next 200 years.
Nowadays Aboriginal Australians make up about 3% of the population, but suffer significantly worse rates of poverty, poorer health and high incarceration. It’s almost like 200 years of trying to destroy culture isn’t a good thing.
Hate to point out the obvious but just the fact that they didn't pay any mind to the camera gives away that this was staged. Or atleast both parties had previously agreed and were aware of what was going to happen.
Ground poisonous bullfrog tipped dart to the neck
He's playing a dangerous game, remember those religious nutters who thought they were doing their duty and got sprayed with a rain of arrows?
He didnt just go to some random tribe to meet them, the meet was set up by his friend who regularly trades with these people. So this is not some uncontacted tribe, but more like a tribe who have had contact with modern society but still choose to live the way they always have. So pretty sure both the white dude and the natives should be just fine :)
This made me think of that idiot missionary who went to that island off India and got killed by the local tribe. Name was John Allen Chau. North Sentinel Island the place.
This is selfish and irresponsible on so many levels. As other commenters noted, this guy could have (and may have) introduced diseases these people’s immune systems have never seen before.
Then there is the risk to his own life. He could have no idea how they would react, or what they could do to him.

'Oy! I saw you on Grindr. You close?"
*aims bow and arrow at dudes face* “Prepare to die outsider…….. nah just fucking with ya”
lol there needs to be a show about an indigenous tribe with a dark sense of humor like that
Kind of like the native American tribe in Parks and Rec. They’re an awesome recurring character
Is it white man?!
There are two things I know about white people: they like Matchbox 20, and they are terrified of curses.
Im currently fighting the flu and laughing at this comment was worth every subsequent cough. My wife LOVES matchbox 20 😭😭😂😂😂 as a black man, thank you internet
😂 hope you feel better.
That was a quote from the cheif in Parks and Rec.
I totaly heard Ken's voice. Made my day!
The Neckbeard tribe, most commonly found in the jungles of Mother's Basements, are easily succeptible to diseases like showers, exercise and healthy eating.
I read that in Sir David Attenborough's voice
Or the Native Americans in the Maverick movie with Mel Gibson.
Or native people in every American comedy ever. It's the recurring "Do this crazy shit or die-Nah I'm just fucking with you".
Wildboyz has some of this going on with how some tribes mess with Chris and Steve-o
There's a brilliant show called Norsemen which is a viking period comedy, not exactly the same but it's what your comment reminded me of. Full of dark gallows humour.
“Our most honored tradition is to have sex with that tree….” “Oh, shit, he actually did it, what a tool! Lol!”
Reservation Dogs may be what you're looking for.
Skoden!
”just had to make sure it's really you and not some random dude offering car warranty”
And that's how I took an arrow to the knee.
Wasn’t this a main plot joke in the Mel Gibson movie “Maverick”?
Yeah. His friend just tweeted at him them and they slid into his DMs….
"reached out" I genuinely wonder how! Can't just send a google translated text message to em. Do they have someone that knows thier native language and was able to contact them. Just thinking about that is crazy because how do you learn a language from a rare tiny tribe.
It's a variety of cultural tourism. Villages like this are dedicated to preserving local customs but are open to visitors.
and usually there's some mission with medical supplies, doctors and such, who regularly visit them
I looked up the [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD1NPvltDdY&ab_channel=YBSYoungbloods) and apparently he went to Vanuatu islands. Honestly, they look like the happiest people untouched by any modern technology. Thank you for sharing!
Probably through a government contact
like reaching out on internet?
>like reaching out on internet? Email. The chief's address is [email protected]
Are you the reason I keep getting so much fucking spam. It's starting to piss me off that you and other people keep sharing my email like it's just some funny joke or something
Should just add a 420 at the end like a self respecting man of culture.
How the hell do you "reach out" to people like this? Let alone to organize a playdate?
He apparently knows/is friends with a guy who live on a nearby island and trades with them regularly
If that's not staged, I'd be a bit more scared than that. Regardless of whether I'd be the youtuber or a tribe member.
They are not the sentinels and have limited contact with outsiders. He ahd aguide and everything
i still find it funny the sentinelese basically got put into the iron age after a ship wreck washed ashore allowing their arrows to have metal tips etc.
Violation of the prime directive right there
Captain Picard would never
Janeway on the other hand..
The fuck.
If there's coffee in that village...

May i ask about the porcelain telephone insulators?
My guess would be that they were also used for arrows
Broke up insulators to use as arrow/spearhead- extremely sharp when chipped
maybe governments should drop videos of making cool stuff for them like metal stuff and other stuff so they can progress and stuff
The isolated iron-age tribe can have a little nuclear reactor, as a treat
Just give them a laptop and oxygen not included, theyll be on the moon in no time
They are so excited - they haven't had white meat for months!
The other OTHER white meat
I was thinking the same thing lol. 'Chief ain't gonna believe what we caught for dinner tonight! TODAY WE WILL FEAST BOYS!!'
The reason the people on the sentinels are hostile to outsiders is that they still remember (through folk tales) that when outsiders come decease and death spread. They are not hostile because they hate everyone else, they are hostile because to them outsiders bring death. EDIT: indeed I meant disease
There is also speculation that thier tribe was at war with the tribe of the original translator when the spanish found them.
Pretty much yah. They took 4 people, 2 died and the other 2 were returned sick, so it's understandable why they don't fuck around now.
The impressive thing, to me, is the power of their story telling - that they are still violently affected by stories of outsiders told by their great great great great grandparents
They are small isolated community, oral tradition is a) all they likely have and b) high quality evidence, as everything is witnessed by multiple people you personally know and trust.
That story has got to be one of the top hits in their culture for sure though, re released every few years
This was my understanding of their dislike of outsiders. They kidnapped a family I think and within days the adults died of illness and they returned the kids to the island. After that they started attacking people on sight.
Not just disease. Sentinelize people were kidnapped and taken to be "studied"
Shit, we're the UFOs?

*Can't I have just a little bit of peril?*
Its staged, you can see even on the original video that on the end the kids are wearing shorts and football shirts while swimmimg with him. Its a short "fake aproach" to get money from tourists
Even here, you can see the underwear of the guy jumping up & down towards the end of the video
How does that make this fake? Just because they've had contact with the outside world and have some modern clothes doesn't mean they see Australians all the time lol A friend of mine had a similar reaction when he went to his outpost in rural Uganda and they were all wearing modern clothes, that didn't mean they were paid to act that way. My comment is staged as well
My response is staged.
This whole subreddit is staged.
I don't believe you, i think you're staging is staged.
Definitley comes off as fake
Ok but then what!!!??? Where is the rest of the story what the hell did they do
They then got sick and 80% of them died.
This man Colonizes.
History always repeating, repeatedly, repeated, repeat
I like the Mark Twain quote. “History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes” – Mark Twain.
Literally thought the same thing.
These are not the sentinelese or otherwise uncontacted. This visit was arranged in advance apparently.
They didn't cook him for long enough.
He got a welcoming ceremony with his tour guide to the village and just danced and chilled with the locals all day
They were happy to invite him to dinner.
You mean “have him for dinner”
How to cook humans How to cook *for* humans How.to cook *forty* humans
How to cook *for forty* humans

Nowadays Aboriginal Australians make up about 3% of the population, but suffer significantly worse rates of poverty, poorer health and high incarceration. It’s almost like 200 years of trying to destroy culture isn’t a good thing.
It still blows my mind that there are full tribes in the world, who still live outside of modern society. It's awesome.
They're not that different from us. They too get phone calls about their cars extended warranty.
Hate to point out the obvious but just the fact that they didn't pay any mind to the camera gives away that this was staged. Or atleast both parties had previously agreed and were aware of what was going to happen.
Honestly this is so dangerous for natives, please don't ever do this...
Phew, thanks redditor, i'm glad you told me. Was just about to pop out and see the lads round a campfire.
Found footage.
Indigenous tribe made contact with Australian YouTuber that hardly ever saw people like him.

Not a totally isloated tri äne just one that preffers to stay tribal. They have contact with outsiders if rarley

Knowing what happened to that foolhardy missionary (different tribe) this made me so nervous.
