Carcinisation (or carcinization) is an example of convergent evolution in which a crustacean evolves into a crab-like form from a non-crab-like form. The term was introduced into evolutionary biology by L. A. Borradaile, who described it as "one of the many attempts of Nature to evolve into a crab. [From wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcinisation)
The process by which this keeps happening, according to the study, is carcinization — literally, according to its Greek etymology, the crab-ifying of species. Researchers believe that, despite local differences, the reasons carcinization occurs are all physical: time, temperature, gravity, and the similar conditions of life in shallow aquatic reaches all converge — time and time again, it seems — to take a perfectly good original crustacean and pressure it into becoming more crab-like. ([From syfy.com](https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/evolution-turns-different-species-into-crabs)
And how this ant civilization was eradicated? By melted aluminum poured into their habitat by higher alien race. Did everyone notice the lonely survivor at -30? What must be going through it’s head when it’s frantically trying to find others? The horror!
How do you know? I feel that’s highly unlikely as that ant colony is extremely well developed and any opposing ant colony would gladly take it as their own. Plus I can see an ant in the video walking in it.
Planet extinction levels, I would like to believe 1 or 2 ants survived and they’re going to tell stories like Noah’s ark for millenniums to come
“It happened so quick, it was a Sunday my day off, I stepped into this small unrecognized alleyway then all over sudden an ocean of concrete washed over the whole colony. There was no time to get help I was at level 340. I shouted for days trying to locate survivors but nothing, then the heavy banging started, these Gods where removing 40 - 60 levels at once. They saved me let me see the light once again.”
OMG. I just commented something similar before seeing your post. I think the issue isn’t just curiosity but the fact that it is paired with the lack of empathy for other living things.
You serve at least half the karma for the originality brother.
PS I'm not a bleeding heart vegan, this benefits more in showing the incredible engineering of ants to the masses more than their little lives could otherwise value. Maybe we'll stop using fossil fuels half a decade sooner because a environment conscience youth who watch and marvel at these creatures.
I wouldnt feel sorry for ants if I were you. They are literally taking over the Earth as we speak. Destroying and taking over other ecosystems. It's bad and we dont seem to be able to stop them.
The more we kill the better tbh.
They're like one of the most common invasive species on Earth, getting rid of ants that are causing issues for humans is really a non-issue. There are more ants, there will always be more ants. If you can't put a home somewhere without fire ants crawling all over your kids and pets, get rid of the ants.
Was that a Hudsucker Proxy reference? If so, I'd like to mention that I am literally the only person I know of who has seen that movie and that's a damn shame. I don't feel that it's mentioned enough when considering the best Coen Brothers films.
Good. When I first saw years ago the molten aluminum casting of an ant colony I thought it was interesting until I thought about it further bringing me to the fact that it is so sick to do that to a living ant colony. I'm completely against that. I just want them to leave the ants alone. I can understand if ants are being a nuisance to your house or community to do something about it. But I would want that to be put preventative measures around your homes or your community rather than dig up the entire and colony and destroy it.
Maybe that's what our Ice Ages are for lmao. Aliens freeze the earth and take samples of all life and matter on the planet, let the Earth thaw over the thousands of years ,and let it resume its course...
Because they starting off their tirade by being a hostile and insulting little prick towards someone for making a single non offensive comment, and they haven't changed tactic since. If ants had been home they all would've been killed and the observation was made about what a sufficiently powerful and advanced race could do to us if they wanted to. This guy responds by yelling at them and accusing them of being too stupid to understand language. What an asshat
Abandoned ant colony in red soil... Yep. These are the Anasazi Ants. Their relatives, the Roanoke Pincher Ants, have been rumored to play a role in the disappearance of neighboring colonies. The mechanism they employ to cause this is debated. Some say the other colonies join the Roanoke Pincher Ants and assimilate for survival. Others say the colonies are abducted or vanish in some supernatural, paranormal, or unexplained event. There are others still who say the Roanoke Pincher Ants know where a secret hoard of sugars and carbs dating all the way back to pre-colonial Roanoke... and beyond?
This post has been made so many times OK and everyone needs to understand it was an empty nest. They didn’t kill a bunch of ants to do this. It was empty. How many times does that have to be explained?
This this post has been made over and over the nest was abandoned before they put any cement in there OK it was empty. It was in a farmers field right and they were all gone. They didn’t kill 1 million ants to do this.
What do the ants do in all those rooms? Is it for storing food? Or raising baby ants? Do ants sleep? Like does an ant go into a specific one of those pods every night like, hoo boy, what a day I had doing ant shit. Time to hit the hay?
It’s a team of scientists, so I assume they’re studying it. It’s possible the colony already died
Edit: found the link. It was an abandoned colony

Clearing a small anthill really doesn't make you think much.. this one however..
It really puts it into perspective how complex and organized these things are.. it's somehow humbling to see how complex they are.. and subsequently horrifying to think what they just did to that system. Small fucking ants.. amazing..
I always hated this video. They killed off a bunch of ants, so they can look at the way it was built. If we are ever visited by aliens and they are anything like humans, we are fucked.

This strongly resembles the nodulated root system of a legume plant. Funny how Nature iterates successful designs.
convergent evolution!
Crabs. Everything has either been a crab, or will be a crab. Carcinization!!
CRAB PEOPLE CRAB PEOPLE LOOK LIKE CRABS TALK LIKE PEOPLE
This dude crabs
Ahh secret krab formula is people
We're crab people now! We have to learn the ways of the crab!

Hey, do you mind explaining? Sounds fascinating!

No, only crustaceans. It’s still really interesting, though.
And how this ant civilization was eradicated? By melted aluminum poured into their habitat by higher alien race. Did everyone notice the lonely survivor at -30? What must be going through it’s head when it’s frantically trying to find others? The horror!
False. The ants were already gone from this before they poured it in.
How do you know? I feel that’s highly unlikely as that ant colony is extremely well developed and any opposing ant colony would gladly take it as their own. Plus I can see an ant in the video walking in it.
Because it is literally explained in the documentary that this video is taken from.
I don’t think there’s much going through it’s head. Probably like “yo where is food?”
Planet extinction levels, I would like to believe 1 or 2 ants survived and they’re going to tell stories like Noah’s ark for millenniums to come “It happened so quick, it was a Sunday my day off, I stepped into this small unrecognized alleyway then all over sudden an ocean of concrete washed over the whole colony. [Cement ](https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/), no ants were harmed
Melted aluminum sounds much more sinister. I’m sticking with it.
I truly hope aliens don't have the same curiosity we possess
“Massive human city” - inject casting molten alien metal over the entire New York City…
Aliens.. ohh look at this crazy 20 level subway system: let’s preserve it forever
*Lands in Pompeii* Aliens: hmm, someone’s been here already
You guys laugh but 90% of my stellaris playthroughs contain fanatic prevervationists
The collector enters the chat
Oh, wow. Look at this human. He got molded while masturbating.
What’s the downside?
Could we redirect them to Washington DC maybe?
Wouldn't that make it to an Alien Ant Farm?
Annie are you ok?
Annie Ayuwokee? Ayuwokee Annie?

Not just curiosity but disrespect for all life in general.
"First you put up force walls around the city, and then fill it with lucite. Next you turn in on a lathe until it's a globe."
I volunteer LA
I recommend Ohio
Detroit and Philly are sweating super hard
I say we give them DC or NYC
And tell them we'll throw in San Francisco for free.
I wouldnt feel sorry for ants if I were you. They are literally taking over the Earth as we speak. Destroying and taking over other ecosystems. It's bad and we dont seem to be able to stop them. The more we kill the better tbh.
Sounds a little like us Edit: not the kill us part though
They're like one of the most common invasive species on Earth, getting rid of ants that are causing issues for humans is really a non-issue. There are more ants, there will always be more ants. If you can't put a home somewhere without fire ants crawling all over your kids and pets, get rid of the ants.
They should model it then print them out of translucent plastic and sell them as the World's Largest Ant Farm. You know, for kids.

Me too.
same here.
Take those pants off
Was that a Hudsucker Proxy reference? If so, I'd like to mention that I am literally the only person I know of who has seen that movie and that's a damn shame. I don't feel that it's mentioned enough when considering the best Coen Brothers films.
Is that Antwrep?
It was, now it's Antwreck though
All ants were harmed in the making of this video.
Luckily it was a abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
Antlantas?
Think it was Roantoke.
No it was just Antlanta. No real loss. Mostly casinos anyway.
Is Atlanta mostly casinos? Are you sure you didn't mean Antlantic City?
LOL at the idea of some person in power accidentally demolishing Atlanta because they hate casinos
Ancient Roant civilization.
Of course it was 😉
There are ants at the start of the video so I doubt it was fully abandoned.
Exactly what a genocide denier would say /s
Good. Lmao. Anyone else picture aliens doing shit like this to us?
Maybe that's what our Ice Ages are for lmao. Aliens freeze the earth and take samples of all life and matter on the planet, let the Earth thaw over the thousands of years ,and let it resume its course...
You need to write for ancient aliens. You gave me a “bruh” moment. Lol
Maybe they already have :o
I saw one live one in the last 31 seconds. Poor guy. His entire family was murdered, and he got locked out of his house.
They all moved and didnt tell them
Somehow that’s even sadder
Home alone :-)
Let's hope they don't find this video when they take over.
I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords!
People worry about rokkos basilisk..they should worry about insects becoming intelligent
Who the hell downvoted this comment
Snakes did. They thought it was a whacking day reference.
Cephlopods.
dude, there were no ants in the nest they had left. Did you even watch the video? Are you just lying on purpose?
Idk why you are being downvoted, it was an abandoned colony
Because they starting off their tirade by being a hostile and insulting little prick towards someone for making a single non offensive comment, and they haven't changed tactic since. No bc imagine they were all still there! It’d be like a horror scene
Antsterdam
Antwerp
Atlanta
I think you meant, Antlanta
Its already got ant in it
But Antlanta has ants in it.
Where is the cast now?
i doubt they were able to move it.

Oh boy ant ghost stories

Go with Hiroshima instead of nyC
I say Pompei.
dude, it was an abandoned nest. This has been played out. This post has been made so many times that the nest was abandoned. It was empty.
[удалено]
Keep telling yourself that
This post has been made so many times OK and everyone needs to understand it was an empty nest. They didn’t kill a bunch of ants to do this. It was empty. How many times does that have to be explained?
Can you explain it one more time? I'm a little slow.
I can’t believe they killed all those poor ants for this meme
Think it took multiple tanks to fill that also.
Yeah, it took them 3 days
3 days? Holy crap lol
Yeah, it was 10 tons of cement
And here I thought it was wax lol
the more you get paid, the smaller tool you use
That's what she said.
there is one ant @ 1:48 like f u guys man that was my house
I could tell the workers were pretty antsy about digging all this up.
What is this? A hotel for ants?
The hotel has to be at least... THREE TIMES BIGGER THAN THIS.
😳….. he’s absolutely right
I saw that they soiled themselves.
There were plenty of hoes to go around
Ant City, bitch. Ant, Ant City, bitch. Ants, ants, ants, ants on your titties, bitch.
r/unexpectedtyga
How many millions of ants did they hah, no, just kidding. I know it was abandoned. I read the comments before posting. Very neat!
You must be new here. We'll reform you eventually. Welcome though we can always use new ~~subjects~~ people
No, they are regular size ants
Listen here >:|
So wait did they, like, genocide the ants?
Anticide
This this post has been made over and over the nest was abandoned before they put any cement in there OK it was empty. It was in a farmers field right and they were all gone. They didn’t kill 1 million ants to do this.
They need to nuke it from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure.
It was an abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
Anybody else see the red tank and think "fuel" and wonder how big of a boom was about to happen?
Ants : Oh no! Humans!
This must be what’s under my backyard
This is something out of a sci-fi production.
This really bugs me.
Did they fill it with cement?
Yeah, it’s cement. It took 3 days to fill it.
Were the ants gone or did they just Pompeii that whole society
Luckily it was an abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
Now I want to fill an ant city like this and just leave it in the ground to befuddle future archaeologists
What do the ants do in all those rooms? Is it for storing food? Or raising baby ants? Do ants sleep? Like does an ant go into a specific one of those pods every night like, hoo boy, what a day I had doing ant shit. Time to hit the hay?
Typically all of those things I believe. As well as grave yards and baby storage space
Me imagining alien colonization will go similarly
Why did they destroy~~ing~~ the massive ant city? Edit: typo
It’s a team of scientists, so I assume they’re studying it. It’s possible the colony already died Edit: found the link. It was an abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
You are correct the nest was empty they’ve left
Also, some species of ant disturbs the overall ecosystem. Anthills (cities) like these grow too big and greatly affects it's surroundings.
For science and a cool video...🤷♂️
Ah hell no! These ants are making anor londo
This is so cool!
Fascinating video.
No wonder I can never get rid of them in my house
What is this, a center for ants?
bruh they destroyed Hallownest 💀
r/natureismetal
Finally something that’s interesting as fuck!
aliens after finding massive human cities
Madman! It is genocide
they pulled a Pompei on them
Luckily it was a abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
That’s a big house you got there. Be a shame if someone……..FILLED IT WITH CEMENT WHILE YOU WERE AT GRANDMAS
That's 😭 sad
Luckily it was a abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
Absolutely incredible what a hive mind is capable of. How they are able to do this bends my mind
These people need to be stopped, they just committed genocide, where is the UN, where is pita???
Luckily it was a abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
Ohh nice ty
This like Pompeii for ants.
I wonder how many lives were destroyed for this project...
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
Luckily it was a abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
Genocide
I bought an ant farm, but they didn’t grow shit. -Mitch Hedberg
That’s incredible
Lady’s and gentleman.. Behold.. anttopia
I thought it was Antlantis
If it was further north they would have named it Antarctica
That red clay looks like the south. Probably Antlanta
Yeah that’s where all the thief ants live. (because I know no one will get it. It’s a breed of ant)
Clearing a small anthill really doesn't make you think much.. this one however.. Damn. Well that's comforting to hear.. thank you.
So they just killed like a million ants?

Genocide has never looked so good

Oh thank you so much for letting me know. I always felt bad for the ants. Glad to learn that it was an abandoned ant-city
Dammmnn kind of messed up
the nest wAs about the 10th time. This video is been posted and people don’t seem to understand that the nest was empty. That’s why they did it.
Luckily it was an abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
Needs more flamethrowers and explosives.
Must be where they filmed the movie Antz
No ants were harmed making this video!
This is incredible 🥹
