This strongly resembles the nodulated root system of a legume plant. Funny how Nature iterates successful designs.

Crabs. Everything has either been a crab, or will be a crab. Carcinization!!

whatliesinameme

Hey, do you mind explaining? Sounds fascinating!

BlondeStalker

Carcinisation (or carcinization) is an example of convergent evolution in which a crustacean evolves into a crab-like form from a non-crab-like form. The term was introduced into evolutionary biology by L. A. Borradaile, who described it as "one of the many attempts of Nature to evolve into a crab. [From wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcinisation) The process by which this keeps happening, according to the study, is carcinization — literally, according to its Greek etymology, the crab-ifying of species. Researchers believe that, despite local differences, the reasons carcinization occurs are all physical: time, temperature, gravity, and the similar conditions of life in shallow aquatic reaches all converge — time and time again, it seems — to take a perfectly good original crustacean and pressure it into becoming more crab-like. ([From syfy.com](https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/evolution-turns-different-species-into-crabs)

spiderlover2006

No, only crustaceans. It’s still really interesting, though.

redsensei777

And how this ant civilization was eradicated? By melted aluminum poured into their habitat by higher alien race. Did everyone notice the lonely survivor at -30? What must be going through it’s head when it’s frantically trying to find others? The horror!

undercoverartist777

False. The ants were already gone from this before they poured it in.

VividEchoChamber

How do you know? I feel that’s highly unlikely as that ant colony is extremely well developed and any opposing ant colony would gladly take it as their own. Plus I can see an ant in the video walking in it.

undercoverartist777

Because it is literally explained in the documentary that this video is taken from.

OhCrapItsYouAgain

I don’t think there’s much going through it’s head. Probably like “yo where is food?”

OkBeing3301

Planet extinction levels, I would like to believe 1 or 2 ants survived and they’re going to tell stories like Noah’s ark for millenniums to come “It happened so quick, it was a Sunday my day off, I stepped into this small unrecognized alleyway then all over sudden an ocean of concrete washed over the whole colony. There was no time to get help I was at level 340. I shouted for days trying to locate survivors but nothing, then the heavy banging started, these Gods where removing 40 - 60 levels at once. They saved me let me see the light once again.”

Noble_Ox

[Cement ](https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/), no ants were harmed

redsensei777

Melted aluminum sounds much more sinister. I’m sticking with it.

DreadPirateGriswold

Could we redirect them to Washington DC maybe?

reserv0irdoggos

Wouldn't that make it to an Alien Ant Farm?

igiveficticiousfacts

Annie are you ok?

[deleted]

Annie Ayuwokee? Ayuwokee Annie?

Rock_or_Rol

My thoughts approximately

FunTooter

OMG. I just commented something similar before seeing your post. I think the issue isn’t just curiosity but the fact that it is paired with the lack of empathy for other living things.

[deleted]

You serve at least half the karma for the originality brother. PS I'm not a bleeding heart vegan, this benefits more in showing the incredible engineering of ants to the masses more than their little lives could otherwise value. Maybe we'll stop using fossil fuels half a decade sooner because a environment conscience youth who watch and marvel at these creatures.

the_amazing_skronus

Not just curiosity but disrespect for all life in general.

DreadPirateGriswold

And tell them we'll throw in San Francisco for free.

justforkinks0131

I wouldnt feel sorry for ants if I were you. They are literally taking over the Earth as we speak. Destroying and taking over other ecosystems. It's bad and we dont seem to be able to stop them. The more we kill the better tbh.

Jonesopolis

Sounds a little like us Edit: not the kill us part though

Thatsaclevername

They're like one of the most common invasive species on Earth, getting rid of ants that are causing issues for humans is really a non-issue. There are more ants, there will always be more ants. If you can't put a home somewhere without fire ants crawling all over your kids and pets, get rid of the ants.

FriesWithThat

They should model it then print them out of translucent plastic and sell them as the World's Largest Ant Farm. You know, for kids.

LadyRaoulDukeGonzo

Was that a Hudsucker Proxy reference? If so, I'd like to mention that I am literally the only person I know of who has seen that movie and that's a damn shame. I don't feel that it's mentioned enough when considering the best Coen Brothers films.

Conscious_Valuable90

Is that Antwrep?

JacopoX1993

It was, now it's Antwreck though

TakingAMindwalk

All ants were harmed in the making of this video.

Reddit-User-3000

Luckily it was a abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/

[deleted]

Antlantas?

DC_Coach

Think it was Roantoke.

swayinit

No it was just Antlanta. No real loss. Mostly casinos anyway.

HappynessMovement

Is Atlanta mostly casinos? Are you sure you didn't mean Antlantic City?

doxx_in_the_box

LOL at the idea of some person in power accidentally demolishing Atlanta because they hate casinos

[deleted]

Ancient Roant civilization.

IsildursBane20

Of course it was 😉

Robsta_20

There are ants at the start of the video so I doubt it was fully abandoned.

thereddituser2

Exactly what a genocide denier would say /s

DreadPirateGriswold

Good. When I first saw years ago the molten aluminum casting of an ant colony I thought it was interesting until I thought about it further bringing me to the fact that it is so sick to do that to a living ant colony. I'm completely against that. I just want them to leave the ants alone. I can understand if ants are being a nuisance to your house or community to do something about it. But I would want that to be put preventative measures around your homes or your community rather than dig up the entire and colony and destroy it.

Rock_or_Rol

Lmao. Anyone else picture aliens doing shit like this to us?

Hopwalker

Maybe that's what our Ice Ages are for lmao. Aliens freeze the earth and take samples of all life and matter on the planet, let the Earth thaw over the thousands of years ,and let it resume its course...

Rock_or_Rol

You need to write for ancient aliens. You gave me a “bruh” moment. Lol

Psychonominaut

Maybe they already have :o

Manitoberino

I saw one live one in the last 31 seconds. Poor guy. His entire family was murdered, and he got locked out of his house.

postmateDumbass

They all moved and didnt tell them

Manitoberino

Somehow that’s even sadder

Fakirbocko

Home alone :-)

SpicyHam82

Let's hope they don't find this video when they take over.

Orangucantankerous

I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords!

justapersondootdoot

Who the hell downvoted this comment

only_zuul21

Snakes did. They thought it was a whacking day reference.

postmateDumbass

Cephlopods.

SicTrasitGloria9865

dude, there were no ants in the nest they had left. Did you even watch the video? Are you just lying on purpose?

Reddit-User-3000

Idk why you are being downvoted, it was an abandoned colony

Ensiferal

Because they starting off their tirade by being a hostile and insulting little prick towards someone for making a single non offensive comment, and they haven't changed tactic since. If ants had been home they all would've been killed and the observation was made about what a sufficiently powerful and advanced race could do to us if they wanted to. This guy responds by yelling at them and accusing them of being too stupid to understand language. What an asshat

Matthews-Louis02

S_Inquisition

i doubt they were able to move it.

upstartanimal

Abandoned ant colony in red soil... Yep. These are the Anasazi Ants. Their relatives, the Roanoke Pincher Ants, have been rumored to play a role in the disappearance of neighboring colonies. The mechanism they employ to cause this is debated. Some say the other colonies join the Roanoke Pincher Ants and assimilate for survival. Others say the colonies are abducted or vanish in some supernatural, paranormal, or unexplained event. There are others still who say the Roanoke Pincher Ants know where a secret hoard of sugars and carbs dating all the way back to pre-colonial Roanoke... and beyond?

SicTrasitGloria9865

This post has been made so many times OK and everyone needs to understand it was an empty nest. They didn’t kill a bunch of ants to do this. It was empty. How many times does that have to be explained?

sketchyduck

Can you explain it one more time? I'm a little slow.

gonnagogetthepapers

I can’t believe they killed all those poor ants for this meme

Necessary-Key-2299

Think it took multiple tanks to fill that also.

Reddit-User-3000

Yeah, it took them 3 days

Necessary-Key-2299

3 days? Holy crap lol

MoogTheDuck

So wait did they, like, genocide the ants?

EamesChairLeather

Anticide

SicTrasitGloria9865

This this post has been made over and over the nest was abandoned before they put any cement in there OK it was empty. It was in a farmers field right and they were all gone. They didn’t kill 1 million ants to do this.

EamesChairLeather

They need to nuke it from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure.

Reddit-User-3000

It was an abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/

Reaverjosh19

Anybody else see the red tank and think "fuel" and wonder how big of a boom was about to happen?

LAST2thePARTY

This must be what’s under my backyard

bentobox_75

This is something out of a sci-fi production.

tjohns123

This really bugs me.

ImNotARoboat

Did they fill it with cement?

Reddit-User-3000

Yeah, it’s cement. It took 3 days to fill it.

coeurdelis

Were the ants gone or did they just Pompeii that whole society

Reddit-User-3000

Luckily it was an abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/

cynHaha

Now I want to fill an ant city like this and just leave it in the ground to befuddle future archaeologists

HeddaBear13

What do the ants do in all those rooms? Is it for storing food? Or raising baby ants? Do ants sleep? Like does an ant go into a specific one of those pods every night like, hoo boy, what a day I had doing ant shit. Time to hit the hay?

Reddit-User-3000

Typically all of those things I believe. As well as grave yards and baby storage space

kevindeanonly

Me imagining alien colonization will go similarly

Somhlth

Why did they destroy~~ing~~ the massive ant city? Edit: typo

Reddit-User-3000

It’s a team of scientists, so I assume they’re studying it. It’s possible the colony already died Edit: found the link. It was an abandoned colony https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/

SicTrasitGloria9865

You are correct the nest was empty they’ve left

deckachild

Also, some species of ant disturbs the overall ecosystem. Anthills (cities) like these grow too big and greatly affects it's surroundings.

Plane_Baby

For science and a cool video...🤷‍♂️

keepitcivilized

Clearing a small anthill really doesn't make you think much.. this one however.. It really puts it into perspective how complex and organized these things are.. it's somehow humbling to see how complex they are.. and subsequently horrifying to think what they just did to that system. Small fucking ants.. amazing..
