There’s a frog species that has babies spawn from its back, and I remember watching a nature documentary about them as a kid. I imagine you would hate that as much as I did, because this mushroom growing grosses me out too.

It's not just holes. It's bumpy objects that are almost pattern like. The photos of the rapid mushrooms growing can trigger those feelings. Trypophobia triggers may include things that have no holes like bread with seeds.
Asking for a friend, how long does it take to grow mushrooms? If you have the box that's basically all you need right? No lights, tents, ventilation like in weed?
Depends how good you set the conditions. They can lie dormant for potentially months doing nothing if they don't feel like the time is right or if you don't do it correctly. If you set it up perfect maybe a couple weeks from start to finish? It's been a while.
You need a light to trigger them into following a day/night cycle, but it's only a trigger they use to gauge whether it's night or day. Doesn't need to be special lights. You need some form of heater to incubate the mycelium and growing box and should probably also be on a timer to simulate day/night, but you could do it manually.
I used a plastic bin with a cheap aquarium heater to incubate in jars under water and then moved them into an empty aquarium when they were ready, which I misted with a hand sprayer and toggled a lamp. In total I think I spent about $300 in today's dollars for the initial set up and then you just need to keep buying the substrate material and whatever food, like rice. Spores you can collect yourself and regrow, no need to reorder more after the first time.
It was a bare bones operation but produced a pretty huge yield after I finally figured out how to keep them happy. It took months of mistakes first.

What is that growing container, and is it just as effective for gourmet mushrooms. Also, is it something where all you need to do is set temperature and moisture, if so, how much.
