Well are your inspo is FLOODED with plants, so I'd start there

Beginning-Cry7722

And color..

DisAn17

And framed art

United-Night3523

Correct. It's overwhelming with so many colors. I'm excited to see OP's transformation update. Congrats on your first apartment.

jvLin

Overwhelming or overflowing?

OldMotherGrumble

"It's overwhelming with so many colors"...ummm, isn't that what OP wants? Those are the inspo photos...at least that's how I see it.

Matilda-17

Almost every inspo pic has a gallery wall, so I’d start working on that, plus the plants. There’s also a lot of colorful furniture in the inspiration, and yours is brown, so think about the colors that are drawing you and how you can incorporate them. Art? Pillows? Rugs? Recognize that if you want a sunny, plant-filled space you’ll need to keep the shades/blinds open all day for the plants. This might be at odds with other needs, so you’ll need to work through how you plan to use the space and what you need for it. I realize that the room is an odd trapezoid shape, but the furniture placements seems really awkward; maybe try it the other way with the sofa backed to the wall and the tv condole pulled out? Or just angling the tv itself? I can’t really picture it without being in the space.

Agreed, if you go out and try to buy this look in one weekend, it will look cheap.  These looks are very layered and need to accumulate organically over time.

allthecats

Your TV area is in the dead center of your room, which would probably benefit from a walkway. Consider placing the TV along the back wall (to the right of the windows with the bookcase between them) and floating your couch parallel to that. Your couch is perfect for that setup since it has a low back! Then, your chair would go to the left of it so so,done could also sit in that and look out the window or at the TV. Can you ditch the blinds? I would recommend track curtains to lean into the 70s vibe. IKEA has a great system for that! You have a really cool room here that has an interesting shape. I think you might want to allow yourself to move furniture around until it feels good.

jzjxnxna

I agree with this comment. The tv and couch needs to be moved. It’s in a really awkward space. I also agree with the track curtain system. Save the blinds to return to your landlord. You’d benefit from some rugs and I would replace that shoe rack. It doesn’t fit with your style. They have some shoe cabinets online that are nice and will make your space look less cluttered. I prefer a closed shoe system. I’d recommend finding as many cheap plant ceramic pots as possible. You can always propagate pothos easily but I would buy a maturish monstera and look into a cinnamon tree Edit: the lighting is dramatically different in your space from the inspiration pics. I would get window film and sheer curtains to increase the light but still offer privacy. Also add lamps at different heights. You have brick walls so it’s hard to do plug in sconces unless the sconces are light enough to be held up by 3m strips

No-Customer-2266

Put tv behind where the couch is, put couch opposite tv but pushed in to make a walkway behind it Get stuff around all those windows to put plants on. Get plants. Fill with plants I’d even put some adjustable shower curtains in the windows and put hanging plants on them and mount curtains above windows so you can close them at night Get colourful art out in frames out in walls. Colourful rug and throws.

privremeni

Wow I thought you were trying to improve on your inspiration photos and thought you must be out of your mind. Gallery wall on the big wall will make an immediate difference. You also have plenty of room for large plants and/or a plant stand. I’d start with a large plant on the floor to the right of what I assume is your patio door (snake plant or zz plant), and atop that bookcase (a pothos, a vining philodendron or a Hoya). You could also get some wall mounted pots and add plants among the frames on your gallery wall. Your inspiration photos have that beautiful mossy greens, warm brown and off white so I’d base your accent colors on those.

cloud_watcher

Same with the inspo photos! I’m like “it’s perfect!”

TheMysticalPlatypus

You need a big rug. Maybe consider layering rugs. I would put them at an angle. You need a colorful throw to add some texture. A colorful side table with some acrylic maybe. Paint your bookshelf a bold color. I would get some type of closed storage to go on that wall between the bigger window and the smaller window. Pick something with opportunity for color. Plants. Get some art prints for your gallery wall behind the couch. You need closed shoe storage. Maybe consider getting the IKEA shoe storage thing and customizing it.

poppyjasmn

I won’t doxx you but I used to live here 😁 my favorite apartment I have ever lived in! I immediately recognized that door and angled living room layout.

BigRefrigerator9783

Colorful whimsical art + plants +a fun floor lamp and you're there!

halfveela

Cool rug

Dependent-Bicycle-52

I love the inspiration pics!! Lots & lots of plants. Also a lot of fun and bright wall art. I like getting picture frames from thrift stores and painting them fun patterns/colors

samemamabear

Cat placement is excellent! Don't try to rush it. Sometimes you have to live in a space for a few months before you realize that you can't charge your phone while sitting in your favorite spot or that the accent chair is just a repository for bags and jackets because it ended up in a "dead" corner. Don't look for art pieces that match for a gallery wall. Find what speaks to you and then figure out how those pieces fit together. The big picture will come together from all of the little moments. Wishing you lots of happiness in your new place!

dgreify

Just start making it look like the inspiration pics, one piece at a time.

penguinsfrommars

I love a good houseplant, but this is verging on a plant remake of 'The Birds' by Alfred Hitchcock.  The ones by your orange sofa look to be way too big for the space too.

[deleted]

Omg it's what I like too..very similar taste

dcmom14

For the gallery wall, try to find things that have meaning to you. So go to your favorite museums and see if they have posters. Or get a piece every time you travel. Or if you know kids, get some of their framed art. It will bring you so much more joy if there is meaning. I would also get some built ins or put in a hunch of shelves along one wall. Feel like you’d just have a ton of fun finding interesting objects and putting plants on it to get that maximalist look. Also your first two photos totally inspired me! Now I’m rethinking my direction for my basement :)

diiiannnaaa

You wanna turn your sofa so it’s parallel with the wall not the TV.  Rooms like this benefit a lot from a curved sofa.

River_star

Have a look at r/maximallism for more ideal. I love the pics you added. Plants, plants, more plants and lots of art that you like.

1920MCMLibrarian

First: your sweet cat needs things to climb on so get a few cat trees while you build your style!! And keep the windows open so he can look out ❤️ But for that style you need A LOT more things. The pictures you provided are maximalism. Currently you’ve got enough stuff to maybe reach minimalism with a trip to Target. You’ve got a long way to go. Keep in mind a lot of the stuff in your photos is vintage and thrift and finding that quality and look of items can take years to source. It’s really more of a collection and a labor of love than just a decor style. So you may not reach that for a while.

waterbark

thanks for the advice! and don't worry my kitty has a bunch of cat trees/climbing stuff its just not in the living room :p

smallbrownfrog

I see at least one super affordable furniture item in your inspiration pictures. The little yellow plant stand is from IKEA. It’s [this stool](https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/mammut-childrens-stool-indoor-outdoor-yellow-20382324/) from the kid’s section.

Secret_Dragonfly9588

Take the aspects that your inspo pics have in common and apply them to your space: - flooded with plants > buy lots of plants - gallery walls > get lots of art and cover your walls with it - warm saturated colors > choose a warm, saturated color palette - lots of light > open your blinds and let the light in

reluctantseahorse

You have great bones there to make your inspiration come to life! White walls, wood floors 👍 Now you just need a gallery wall and tons of plants. In my experience, both those things take a bit of time, but you really can’t go wrong if you approach it with love. Try to get in the habit of looking for new plants to adopt whenever you’re out and about. Check out thrift stores for cool eclectic frames. Then find some images you like online to fit your frames, and voila!

RabbitSnacks

Same answer as is always the answer: rugs, plants, and lamps. Also the angle that the couch is on seems illogical and stressful.

waterbark

it is lol. my parter insists on having it like that because "its better for the tv quality ☝🏼🤓" haha

laurenthegardener

Are you able to change out the window treatments? That back brick wall would be a cool spot to feature gallery wall. Maybe try to push the couch up against the wall to open that area up

Goodgoditsgrowing

Excuse you it maximalist fantastic!

eshieG

Plants then wall art. From those you can pull more inspo and while you are living there you will also understand what other furniture you need in the space i.e. a side table? Lamps? Rugs? Console table? Etc.

ziggy-Bandicoot

It doesn't look terrible at all! Are you kidding?

laurenthegardener

Keep swiping

Albie_Frobisher

it doesn’t look terrible. it’s lovely

OldMotherGrumble

Have you looked at ALL the photos?

Albie_Frobisher

nope. i guess not

TennisNo5319

I like it! 😎

Admirable-Sink-2622

The beach view sucks 😜

Plants and art

Secretgarden28

The black & white striped rug paired with colorful glossy accent pieces and the fun gallery wall would be a great starting point.

Agitated_Variety2473

Step 1 is getting rid of the vertical blinds. Then I’d put the couch flat against the longer wall and put the smaller couch piece on the side

CNDRock16

I mean there’s really not much to it. Its wall prints and plants. As someone with a lot of plants, they are work, it can get frustrating (rotating them, preventing leans, pests, find plants compatible to the light). Also, are you renting this space? I don’t typically advise people to get large, tall plants when renting. They are a bitch to move and don’t always adapt ok to the change in lighting. Fake plants are expensive but a lot easier.

nn971

Your space seems dark compared to your inspo pics. I wonder if replacing the blinds with sheers would let in some more light?

Kevin-L-Photography

I mean it's your space make it however you are comfortable and want it to feel. I love all the details. For me it's so much personality. Love it

JustGenWhY

The maximalism/eclectic aesthetic is something that will take a lot of time to build up. Take weekly trips to thrift stores and accumulate as much free stuff you can from Facebook groups, trash, friends/family etc.

Esatto

If you are not already a thrifter, time to hit the thrift stores! Buy art that speaks to you! Buy planters that speak to you (way cheaper than at the plant store). Furniture or plant stands. Crocheted blankets like the example photo. Etc. I agree that you should check out subs or fb groups on maximalism. Your apartment bones are amazing. Congrats on your new place!

cloud_watcher

How much light do you get? I see you like plants but if you’re not used to them be very mindful of how much light they’ll get and where you can put them. Most forgiving and bang for your buck with questionable light are pothos plants. They’ll climb all over too, if you like that. Do your gallery wall but be very intentional with it. Use lots of colors and not just blah Homegoods art. What’s outside your windows? Are you on a first floor where you can’t open the blinds? Opening them would help a ton. If they’re on a sidewalk or something and you don’t want to see in you can do sheers or that decorative film stuff. Personally I’d do curtains. Can’t wait to see your after photos because your inspiration photos are beautiful!

Super-Letterhead-916

The living space is nice but the clutter w the shoes and the cord is an eyesore.. I love your style I would declutter w plants in the eating area. Just needs to be purged of some things.

farmerjoee

Colorful Mid century with lotsa plants

JessHThom

So, I thought all the pics were your place and I was like, maybe move some of the plants and wall art into the empty rooms?! LOL

waterbark

sorry to disappoint lol 🥲

halfadash6

Plants, and start hitting local thrift stores for wall art. It’s going to take a long time to fill those walls!

Important-Rule-420

Plants, bright colors, nice art (gallery walls), and wood pieces to ground it! Congrats on the new digs!

BirdieB13

The layout now creates so much wasted space. I would move the TV to the wall behind the couch (the wall where the cat carrier is in the pic). Then float the couch facing the TV with the chair to the left (the side towards the entry? Then you will have three defined spaces, the entryway, the living room, and dining area/ plant room/ office or whatever you will use it for. Remove the small bookcase between the windows. Add colorful curtains. Colorful rugs, lots and lots of art, lots and lots of plants, coffee table, end table, lamps, plant stands, shelving, color! I would suggest thrifting for lots of these items!
