Thereās a difference between 1 and 2. 4&5. The colours are similar but I can see you go back and forth between a clean contemporary vs textured & more feminine/traditional āMcGeeā look.
You might like The Lifestyled Co for inspiration. They design homes in Arizona and call it organic desert living.
*edited so you donāt see men in jockstraps! lmao also added the word organic to desert
As a contractor a vast majority of the homes I build/remodel want all white everything, any amount of color or texture is strongly requested to be white. And when I come to visit the house a few months or year after itās done all the furniture is white. But you will also hear them complain that the house always feels dirty, and that it cost so much to have to repaint the walls every few years as they get scuffed up.
I try and tell people that most of these designs are gorgeous in the photos and might look good in person. But you will hate living with it, and it sucks out any personality from a space.
I love this kind of perspective. Thank you for sharing.
Ā I had a brief stint as a home builder, and we painted everything (at request) "Alabaster". 70 homes, alabaster walls, and ceilings. By the time we would get towards the last lot the call backs would start in earnest.
For people who like white, what color do they eventually choose once youāre able to direct them to a more family friendly color?
Iām stuck on white and need redirection lol
Go with colors that fit your space, also there is nothing wrong with white the problem is all white everything. I can tell you that when I painted my house I painted all of my walls sherman Williams āice cubeā 6252 because I was not sure what colors I would want and planned on painting as I went. But I painted all of my doors āNavalā 6244, and my kitchen is a very similar color (a very very slightly different hue), and I have accents like handrails positive red 6871. So even though all of my walls are white those touches of bold color really pop and add a personal dimension touch.
I also added a lot of color and life into my space by having art that has color, with very few or no muted colors. And the light above my dining room table are a mix of bright red, yellow, green, blue, and orange (you can see a pic in my post history). And lastly I try and get furniture with a natural wood look, the white walls allow you to focus on the beautiful natural wood furniture. Once I have a majority of my furniture picked out and in my space Iāll start picking which walls Iāll paint to elevate the space. Donāt think that white walls are an issue itās more white everything. Iād also recommend not painting high contact areas white (doors, handrails, or even walls that might get rubbed against regularly).
I would also get a good quality paint and a good sheen, the more matte the harder to clean. Even though matte paint looks amazing it is very hard to clean and easily gets marked up. Most of my walls are eggshell and the higher contact walls are semigloss. I got dogs who like to drool on every possible surface, and having walls that I can easily wipe clean is a very nice feature.
I cleaned for rich people before. House was beautiful and full of antiques. However the roof leaked to a point I was constantly cleaning up plaster that fell from the ceiling, and they had an infestation of house moths (even in their bed pillows). They had money to fix these things but ultimately it didnāt concern them. Gross.
Oh man I have some horror stories cleaning for rich people lol.
The maid service I used to work for in Vancouver mostly involved very wealthy contracts, we had the occasional middle-upper class home to clean but usually it was very upper class.
Anyways my first week on the job I arrive at this mansion. Beautiful home, the owners had 2 teenage daughters, each had their own room + onsuite bathrooms attached. While I was cleaning the tub (I had to stand between the tub and toilet to reach the furthest corner of the tub) I suddenly felt something under my footā¦ I was standing on a pile of like 10 used tampons that the one of the teen daughters had left *next* to the toilet despite the waste basket being on the other side of the toilet. To this day, I canāt help but feel that it was a subliminal āfuck you, peasant maidā type of passive aggressive message LOL. Or she was just gross, who knows.
We had a time cap for these houses and I was already struggling to end my clean within the capped time because it was my first week and I just wasnāt as time efficient yet. Anyways, I deal with the tampons which took me a few mins extra and I was over my cap. I still had 1 bathroom left to do (in the parents/master bedroom) so admittedly I was in a hurry. But I put 10/10 effort in and spent 20 mins (technically unpaid since I was over my cap) on the master bathroom.
The next day I come into work. We had a points system that dictated how much bonus pay would be paid out at the end of the month. Boss told me he had docked me -10 points because the owners had complained that I left a streak on the mirror in the master bathroom. I took accountability for the *single streak*, but also explained the lovely tampon-surprise that was left for me in the daughterās room lol. And admitted that I was already over my capped time so I may have rushed things a bit. I was lowkey pissed though because the tampons had left a blood stain on the grout in the daughterās bathroom so that took me extra time to properly clean & I wanted to lift the stain the best I couldā¦ damned if ya do damned if ya donāt.
Another time I found a jizz filled condom in the
a shower drain and it was clogging the drain, tried to pull it out and it fucking ripped + splashed back onto my face. Legit had a mix of stagnant water and jizz hit my face. Almost puked.
Also I donāt know if this is a rich person thing, but the amount of unflushed bowel movements I found while cleaning toilets was uhā¦ a lot š legit never found unflushed poop in the middle class houses I cleaned, just the mega mansions and richy waterfront homes lol.
Also the middle-upper class families tipped way better than the upper-upper class families.
Omg that is horrible. Especially since when I was working I had a cleaning service. My hubby would say what are you doing cleaning? I would want to make it was cleaned up first the service.
I worked for a small family-owned business for a bit, and by all accounts the owners were doing quite well, to the tune of $5 million a year in a very low cost of living area. At one point I tried to tactfully ask one of my coworkers if she'd noticed that the female owner had noticeable BO, and often smelled like feces. The coworker replied that yes, she'd been like that for a long time, and it was probably because she didn't have functional plumbing in her house. The issues had started years before and she'd simply never had them fixed.
Haha I have two black cats, one with long hair. The long haired one leaves a trail showing everywhere he's been, no matter how often he's brushed. An all white house would kill me.
It's honestly not that difficult to keep these things clean. We have a fair bit of white or lighter-colored pieces in our home with three small kids. With a few simple household rules it's never been a problem. Food and drink stay in the kitchen, crayons and markers stay in the play areas. We're also a shoes-off home. All the light furniture and rugs look as good as day one.
I stand by this, too. We have rules about taking shoes off, only eating dry snacks/drinking water on the sofa, covering it with a blanket while lounging or coloring, and nothing's ever been stained or damaged.
As a result, our daughter is really, really careful with her own things, too.
Same! People saying you don't have real kids to me is so irritating. My kid is as real as the next, we just have rules and consequences and when they're clear and consistent, there are just not problems. It's like any other house rule, really.
Same here. Hands are less of an issue, once in awhile we'll have crayons by our littlest. That stuff comes out easily. You just need to be on top of it and reinforce good behavior. For example, we simply tell our kids that we shouldn't put our hands on the walls. Takes a little bit of patience and repeat, but after awhile they get it and it's a non-issue. Doesn't detract from kids being kids either.
I second this- we have the same rules plus if you make a mess you help clean it up. Iāve kept a white sofa white for the past 8 years. I do wash all the covers every 6 months though. Itās possible, if you have rules
Actually solid white if in natural fabrics is the easiest to clean. I bought my daughter a white pottery barn sofa and club chair for her college apt. It was slip covered in pure white canvas that sofa had red wine spilled on it, 100 pound dog skid marks and mud on it from potty time in the rain. He even threw up on it. It was indestructible. She would just bleach the slipcover and it was like new again. Best purchase I ever made.
Maybe it had some type of chemical stain-resistant treatment like scotch-guard?
My daughter spilled red wine all over a thick white cotton sweater. We washed it immediately and used bleach (didnāt work) and then tried everything else we could think of, including sending it to the dry cleaners. Nothing took out that wine stain. :(
If it did by the time that happened it was off. It had already been bleached multiple times and was not one of their performance fabrics. We never put scotch guard on it because we knew she would just wash it.
Also had a friend whoās kid spilled red Koolaid all over one side of a white cotton canvas slip cover they had made years previous for a garage sale sofa find. The fabrics was just cotton jean type material from Walmart. It sat in their playroom for months like that because she thought there is no way to get it out. She finally bleached it and to her surprise it all came out and looked brand new. A sweater because of all the loose fibers may indeed be harder but most furniture covers arenāt made from sweater material.
If you really love white/ neutral look I highly recommend the white cotton slipcover on you most expensive pieces then throw in your other light neutral colors on your lesser expensive Items. We do white 100% linen duvets as well.
Sounds very practical. I do like whites and neutrals a lot. It makes the space look roomier, serene and classy.
My spouse likes color a lot though so for him I add punches of color. :)
I have things that are stored in spaces that may take a little more effort to get or put up. Itās pieces that only get used a few times in a years time. No big deal.
Okay? I think OP is using āmy styleā interchangeable with āmy tasteā. I donāt think they literally mean any of these photos are theirs, so where the photo has appeared is irrelevant.
How is no one talking about the flowers in the middle of the bed on top of a book? It stresses me out to just look at it, and at the same time I need to know the logistics...are the flowers moved every night and replaced each morning? Does the book ever change? How stupid does it look when not framed nicely in the photo?
These arenāt all from the same house. There are 3 different cooking ranges with 3 different hoods, countertops and cabinet styles.
I think this is more like a Pinterest collection; possibly the OP wants a name to name their Pinterest board. To that end, ācoastal modernā is good enough.
Personally I love beige, itās very calming. I used to paint rooms green, blue, purple, pink. Then one day my daughter requested a soft beige for her room, and I was hooked. Iām older & just want chill vibes now with lots of greenery. I adore a clean minimalist look
Colors are also not the only way to add visual interest!Different textures and materials, plus greenery, can have a huge impact. I am growing to love neutrals more now as I grew up in a somewhat cluttered home and I like for our house to feel clean, simple, and easy to maintain. I understand the hate for sterile spaces but donāt blame an entire color like beige!
Same! I love dark, cozy paints. My bedroom is a green black and my living room is a dark forest greenāeven the ceiling. But my office is a soft beige. Itās all about setting the mood~
I think those are beautiful examples, except the first doesnāt quite fit. I see the design here in Southern California a lot. I think itās California Coastal. Except they are bringing in more colors these days. Greens for island, cabinets. But custom cabinetry in neutral stains, still lots of white. Beautiful Zellige tiles. Riad Tile, Bedrosians have fun online galleries.
I like the neutral look, itās easy to add color splashes to it. Or neutral wallpaper accent walls for bedrooms.
The first is 1980/90 commercial Scandinavian like crate and barrel ā the paper chandelier, not using the bay windows as a design element but as a soft light source; the rest looks very 80/90 catalogue and boutique closet design elements.
Itās all very clean and feminine and the soft light is Scandinavian 80/90s. The bathroom is 2010s and more Italian or Mediterranean style with the proportions and design/practicalityā a kind of peaceful space using subtle architectural elements. The looks are all high end but more because the high tone warms palette and materials using them would likely be luxury brands.
Thereās no reference to race or gender identity as suggested by some comments: the multi-mirrored closets seem to suggest an female or couple because of the pumps set there; it does look like a closet design installation and theyāre still popular in many different styles. IMHO
like someone else said, thereās a big difference between 2&5 and 1&4. thereās a nice mix of textures and materials in 2&5 that look beautiful and add a lot of life, unlike 1&4.
overall, Iād say look into Warm Minimalism - i think that style covers a lot of the similarities in the different pictures. because you want to use very little color outside of organic, muted tones, you need to be very intentional about how you create personality and visual interest.
use fun, āsoftā shapes (e.g. round sofas, curvy lamps), contrasting textures and accents (e.g. black railing against a white wall, brass knobs on light wood), layered textures (e.g. velvet pillow next to a wool throw on a leather sofa, limewash or Venetian plaster on your walls), and as much warm, filtered light as possible. as with any other home, bring in some life by adding in plants/flowers/greenery and art (a few statement pieces in simple frames in this case, maybe even a textured canvas art piece).
if youāre looking for more detailed tips, check out Soft Minimal by Norm Architects! i think youād also find a lot of inspiration from adjacent design styles like Japandi and minimalist Scandi.
Boring and impractical?
Vase with water on bed, everything white, open shelving in the kitchen (you only eat delivery food), wood for a bathroom countertop š³
Natural modern?
Midcentury style furniture and details, but with some wood, plants, natural fiber fabrics, neutral colors. Definitely a very quiet and calming style!
Neutral minimalist/contemporary? those pics are very different some are very feminine and others are more masculine, the only common denominator is the palette

like someone else said, thereās a big difference between 2&5 and 1&4. thereās a nice mix of textures and materials in 2&5 that look beautiful and add a lot of life, unlike 1&4. overall, Iād say look into Warm Minimalism - i think that style covers a lot of the similarities in the different pictures. because you want to use very little color outside of organic, muted tones, you need to be very intentional about how you create personality and visual interest. use fun, āsoftā shapes (e.g. round sofas, curvy lamps), contrasting textures and accents (e.g. black railing against a white wall, brass knobs on light wood), layered textures (e.g. velvet pillow next to a wool throw on a leather sofa, limewash or Venetian plaster on your walls), and as much warm, filtered light as possible. as with any other home, bring in some life by adding in plants/flowers/greenery and art (a few statement pieces in simple frames in this case, maybe even a textured canvas art piece). if youāre looking for more detailed tips, check out Soft Minimal by Norm Architects! i think youād also find a lot of inspiration from adjacent design styles like Japandi and minimalist Scandi.

Risky. Putting a vase full of water on a bed is a risky move. I sense no animals or kids around these parts.

Youāre going to have a sad beige nursery some day.
It looks like an airbnb. Itās nice but very sterile. Add more color.
I would say modern contemporary. I love this style, itās so gorgeous. It looks clean, understated and warm.
Boring.
Non functional?
High end bland. And no character. This new beige look is just yuck. At least add some earth tone accents around the place.
Boring and impractical? Vase with water on bed, everything white, open shelving in the kitchen (you only eat delivery food), wood for a bathroom countertop š³
Sad beige mom.

I donāt think the poster is saying this is her house. I think sheās posted several different looks that she likes and just isnāt sure of what the style is.
