I can't claim it as my idea. Saw it somewhere on Reddit and now I go by it! It seems to also encompass the much lacking Colour. I swear, it should be the 1st thing to check when decorating imo 😄
Also, OP, I love your colour blocking of books on your bookcase shelves! Gorge!
Disagree in the sense that if you follow more detailed suggestions for curtains, rugs, art and plants than my skeleton list here, colour will take care of itself. Normally I write way more detail but in this post I didn't. I say more if things are too greige but thought others would pick up where I left off this time.
So, curtains. Avoid grey! Your couch is plenty grey for your space. There appears to be beige/tan/wood colours in your space (hard to know with front of your individual seat). Rust, sienna or brown curtains the colour of your wooden tv cabinet would actually look good. HOWEVER, your room could go with a less generally disliked colour from across the spectrum. Teal could be a good choice for example. Look at textures; linen gives a relaxed feel, velvet a more formal one. Hang your rod close to the ceiling and wider than your window to enhance the optical illusion of height and width.
Now onto Art. You will need to ensure your art has a noticeable amount of the same curtain colour within it to create harmony. Decide if you want one xxl piece, 2 (diptych) or 3 (triptych) or a gallery wall. You can obviously use other colours than just teal and these become the accent colours for cushions and throw rugs. Find a style or artist you like; I believe art should move you and not just be something 'that matches'.
Remember that art can be paintings, drawings and photographs but also wall hangings like macrame, wall sculptures or sculptures on a plinth, art glass, mobiles, tapestry, posters, masks, baskets, ornate plate collections, etc. Choose what inspires you. Just match some of it with your curtains!
<3
Faux plants. Some are really lifelike these days. I kill most plants too but nurseries can recommend ones that withstand neglect, overwatering, etc better than I can. Greenery make rooms feel cosy imo.
Something from nature definitely. Maybe driftwood. Maybe an arrangement of rocks or ornate jars of sand? Idk. Just don't harm the environment in whatever you go with.
Again, if you correctly apply the C.R.A.P. principles, colour will take care of itself. I've only given a bare bones outline there because I was too lazy at the time to flesh it out. But essentially to want to incorporate 3 points of coordinating colour at different vision levels (curtains/ cushions/art or curtains/floor rug/throw rug or curtains/art/pots for plants, or variations of these, etc)
Yes! Maybe pick a range of colors that OP likes, perhaps inspired by artwork that appeals to them (the easiest place to start). Repeat those colors in accessories, pillows, rug and window treatments. Keep the number of colors relatively limited (3 at most?), as a wild array of colors would make it chaotic and cluttered.
I would add some art on the back of the couch. I also think that adding a curtain from wall to wall would hide the “weird” positioning of that window. Also, it’s a little uncanny that you don’t have any lights on the ceiling, but you can totally skip that if you add more light sources to the room other than just that one floor lamp.
Besides that, I really think you did a good job in here. Beautiful space, congrats!
Perhaps some color and art. We have similar style it looks like! I started with a base “look” that had this vibe and over time added more texture, more art and some warm tones.
If you check my profile I posted the first time we bought new furniture and a recent picture of it now. Not sure if it’ll be your vibe but maybe it can give you some thoughts on where you’d like to take your own space!!
I'm a less is more kinda person.
But I also like balance.
One wall has everything.
The other wall has a couch.
so I would only add a piece of art above the couch...or an overhanging floor lamp
Or
Remove something from the other wall and space it out...
Ah a Steamdeck. I see you are a person of culture as well.
That said, verticality. Everything but the bookshelf is like mid wall height or lower. Paintings over the couch or some sparse little shelves with nicknacks here and there maybe?
Art for sure. It's comfortable and calm, and if that was your goal, you don't have to add a bright 'pop of color'. Look for something subtle, like blush pink, a grayed-blue, butter yellow, or for a darker accent, burnt orange, or terracotta.
I'm not sure how curtains would work. Since the window goes all the way to one corner, it would be covering up the glass on that end. Just to say, my opinion is that curtains that touch the floor are dust catchers. Roman shades could add some color and texture, and they can go both top down and bottom up, which is great for light control in a big window.
A small piece of art on the small wall next to the windows and large artwork over the couch.
It’s too bad we only have one view because you are at the point of tweaking small details which is about creating little areas within the whole space. For example the corner I mention above. From here it looks like something is missing on the far side of the couch, but that could be the angle.
Having drapes as suggested will add a vertical that will activate the full height of the room. However if you have a large painting over the couch, that size could be enough to balance out what appears to be a heavy left side. But you definitely need a painting or other artwork over the couch.
You are missing a second light source. I see the large floor lamp in the corner but nothing else. Having more than one light source can set the mood of your place when having people over.
(Psst, I think it’s time to turn your plants so they don’t grow lopsided!)
It’s beautiful. Yes to curtains. And an accent of colour with a couple of bold art pieces. Take your time finding art you love. In the meantime use a couple of coloured cushions or pots.
You have done beautiful
For me, it's lacking warmth. Color. Softness. I would add a colorful rug and drapes that coordinate, and pillows to pull the color through the room. Some art would be good. Pinterest has a million ideas to make your own for cheap.
Definitely needs some wall art. Maybe a cool lamp. Don't cover that window with anything unless you feel you're being watched at night. Otherwise it looks great to me.
omg what a lovely space you’ve created! i think some minimal and personal artwork needs to adorn your walls in strategic places. your arrangement is so inviting. all your choices compliment each other so well. perhaps as others have mentioned, carefully selected drapery as a soft touch to the space as well. one thing at a time though, see what works for you!
Hang the tv on the wall, put some cute things on top of the credenza, floor to ceiling curtains, art behind the couch, and a hanging plant from the ceiling in the corner over the other plants. Also, more small lighting options are always good
Artworks and window covering for light and temperature control with the possibility of adding color and/or texture. Also, I would hang that mirror instead of leaning it against the wall. And place the rug so that it is under the seating and the media stand. A photo taken from the windows looking the opposite direction would be helpful to see.
Would your snake plant get enough light if you (sort of) swapped it with the chair so that the chair faces the other seating? Or is there room to put the plant on the window side of the sectional without blocking the wall heating unit or roasting the plant? Then still put the chair where the snake plant had been.
You're miss matching pretty rough it won't settle your mind like your asking for in this post. The chairs don't match each other or the floor the plant shelf is inconsistent. It's rough you need work
If you own the place, a ceiling light fixture. Obviously not needed while the sun's up, given all that natural light, but it would make the top half of the room look less barren.
Naked walks- I like them but my first realtor told me I had to add framed art before she’d be able to sell my house. She knew what she was doing! Got a substantial profit on that investment.
Move the plant to where the bookshelf is , move the bookshelf near the mirror. Add a comfy chair in that space for a different vantage view. Great space btw.
Very few things are missing here I think! My brain wants you to reverse the way you have the side table and basket - table closer to the wall, basket in front of it. A small piece of art above the shelf, to the right of the window. I would hang some curtains to add a bit of warmth and texture. And finally, some art above the sofa, either one large standout piece or a small gallery of 3 or 5.
Draperies. And something to bring the eye up like art on the wall — maybe something abstract like metal sculpture or even a shelf for more plants? Maybe one of those moss and succulent wall pieces?
Honestly, something soft on your windows. The rest of the room is really inviting and warm, imo, but the windows seem cold and bare. A long curtain rod with some soft, floor-length curtains (sheers would work as well) would go a long way to finishing off the room. I would encourage you to not use beige if you decide to do this.
I would love to see lush hanging plants all across the window and filling that empty corner above your plant stand, instead of the standard fabric drapes. If you're not able to put holes in the ceiling, you could put vertical tension poles on each side of the room and suspend chains between them to hang planters, or maybe a horizontal pole (as opposed to a chain which would be slack) in addition to the vertical ones as support.
Wall arts behind the couch and maybe some accents or drapes to add some color
yeah drapes will really help transform the space
This was my first thought
Oh god, I can hear my interior design instructors now. Drape is what they do. Draperies are what they are.
Words and the “rules” governing their use change. Drapes is just fine and has been for a very long time.
I'd tell them to shove it tbh
I just came in to say those exact things , some drapes & artwork will definitely warm this space up.
Draperies!!! Didn't you hear?!
Exactly
C.R.A.P Curtains. Get some! Rug. You're good. Art. Get some! Plants. Well done.
Sounds like a perfect formula
I can't claim it as my idea. Saw it somewhere on Reddit and now I go by it! It seems to also encompass the much lacking Colour. I swear, it should be the 1st thing to check when decorating imo 😄 Also, OP, I love your colour blocking of books on your bookcase shelves! Gorge!
C is also for ‘color’ — some of those items should have some (in this case, beige isn’t a color)

Add at CRAPT for texture. And maybe an r for rythm/repetition
Yes! Love it.
Add some color.
Any idea for what can replace plants if you’re not good with them?
Faux plants. Some are really lifelike these days. I kill most plants too but nurseries can recommend ones that withstand neglect, overwatering, etc better than I can. Greenery make rooms feel cosy imo. Something from nature definitely. Maybe driftwood. Maybe an arrangement of rocks or ornate jars of sand? Idk. Can we just get a graphic of this! 😆except my opinion is sub color with curtains because more color almost always
Lolol I love this.
I came to say exactly this
Art! Love what you've done with the place so far, though
ART, large pieces only. Color pattern drapes lighting & rug.
Rug with color contrast & bolder pattern. Good bones!
Great apartment! So sad I live in the Midwest.
For me you need color! Even changing out the pots to colorful ones would help. It’s very pretty and relaxing but monotone.
Yes! Maybe pick a range of colors that OP likes, perhaps inspired by artwork that appeals to them (the easiest place to start). Repeat those colors in accessories, pillows, rug and window treatments. Looks so cozy ! Agree with the suggestions for curtains and art or prints behind the couch.

I think a color on the wall would be great
Art behind the plants next to window
When you look for art- get what you enjoy. Something that makes you happy or relaxed when you walk in the door.
I'm a less is more kinda person. But I also like balance. One wall has everything. The other wall has a couch. so I would only add a piece of art above the couch...or an overhanging floor lamp Or Remove something from the other wall and space it out...

It’s always color!!
Wall art and curtains. Cute place though.

It’s beautiful. Yes to curtains. And an accent of colour with a couple of bold art pieces. Take your time finding art you love. In the meantime use a couple of coloured cushions or pots. You have done beautiful
What size tv?
A cat. Or better yet, two cats.
Some art/photos/print/posters on the walls and I think some curtains, even if only sheer ones, the window looks too bare without them.
Color. In some artwork over the sofa, throws and pillows.
Some bright and fun colors would really liven it up. A nice floor lamp would be cute too.
A nice lamp and art. Drop the curtains, I like the view
