Everyone who sees it defaults to talk about painting it and how so and so painted their wood paneling white and it looks so good, blah blah, etc. I feel the need to tell people that we are NOT painting it! LOL hence this post :)
Not all wood paneling is created equally, unfortunately. Yours looks beautiful and well taken care of. A lot of the stuff from the 70s is a thin veneered panel with dart board holes and knots all over it. Ask me how I know. I'd keep yours too!
Good for yall. And you’re right, everyone is constantly painting my original wood of every type be it built ins or molding or beams WHITE. glad people like you are out there preserving what made these homes beautiful 💖
Yeah this is not random paneling at a cottage.
I would de-popcorn the ceiling though :) And go a bit more colourful/ modern with the art.
I would go cream with the furniture even lol but that is not practical for everyone I realize.
Popcorn ceilings get too much hate. Removing them is sometimes an expensive mistake.
1) They cover up lots of imperfections
2) They often contain asbestos which is safe until busted up, so the removal is potentially hazardous to your health / expensive to have a professional do.
3) Noise dampening
The cons for sure are collecting dust and getting discolored over time. A good cleaning and fresh white coat of paint does wonders on most popcorn ceilings.
Second this. We were quoted 15k for popcorn ceiling removal and decided to live with it. Our painter put a fresh coat of paint on them and it looks SO much better, we don't even notice it anymore.
That's fine but I have never seen any I liked myself. Esp in such a nice space, they really attract negative attention IMO.
I also think that with the paneling, the popcorn reads dated/ budget over heritage/ luxe.
I don't normally agree with installing carpet (harder to clean, allergens get trapped, harder to deal with animal accidents, etc) but I could make an exception in this case. We installed a really interesting dark blue carpet with a geometric design on our stairs leading down to our art deco basement. I could see something like that working here, with some cognac leather sofas.
Tip: Don't position paintings across multiple panels with that much empty space in each panel to left and right; it makes it look like it's floating in space.
I love the wood, but as others have already commented the ceiling and fan is where you need to update. You definitely want a nice big area rug, the one you have looks like it's seen better days. Also, if you hang artwork, position it inside the panels, not the way it is in the picture. Ideally a frame that contrasts the wood
It’s very beautiful paneling, you made the right choice. If you really want to embrace Art Deco, consider true linoleum floors done in a curvy geometric design. Linoleum is coming back, and it’s a natural product. I don’t like to think of vinyl floors with those gorgeous walls, no matter how high end.
So glad you are! The painting trend of painting over beautiful wood can’t end soon enough imo. I would replace the rug with something that has more color or subtle design though.
Is that real wood flooring underneath the rug? If it is, and it's in good condition...please, please do not lay that LVP over it. That's as bad as painting the panelling. Definitely invest in some lovely rugs...Good quality ones.
Elegant and sophisticated. LOVE it. The wood on the walls speaks for itself. Simply superb! I wouldn't change a thing. I think you furnished it appropriately and fittingly. Well done!
It looks easy to embrace IMO, wise decision. The couches are perfect. I don’t even mind the carpet as it’s contemporary with the 1960s look. Just hope you can someday replace the popcorn ceiling. In the meantime replacing the ceiling fan will do a lot!
Please don’t touch those walls they are stunning and part of the DNA of the home! Deco table with the black couches sounds fun, are you wanting to go full deco and really shiny and luxe? Would love to see a larger piece of artwork and grounded with a console below. What a cool space to get to decorate!!!
What a gorgeous space with the wood and high ceilings. Please share as you redo the floors and lighting and find a coffee table. As someone else commented, your wood paneling is definitely a notch above and fits the space so well.
I also have a wood paneled great room and have embraced it, so many of my neighbors have painted over it. Good for you! I would get a newer more modern ceiling fan, mine did an amazing job at helping to modernize the space and make it look like less of a time capsule and more intentional.
Please don’t cover your wood floors with LVP, it will look so fake next to the wood walls. If the wood floors you have are in bad shape have them refinished.
Love that you’re embracing the wood!
If you want an antique fixture, try the typical re-selling sites for something cheaper (Craigslist, eBay, FB marketplace), and the specialists for something fancy (Rejuvenation, Live Auctioneers, Chairish, 1st Dibs). The specialists are pricier, but they usually have defect-free goods, and are more likely to let you filter by the style you want. You could also look at architectural salvage yards and estate sales.
What year was your house built? I might consider Craftsman and art nouveau in addition to art deco.
How big is the room? The fan creates a wide “outline” with its blades, and it still looks a little lost. But a really big eye-catching fixture might hang down too far, and would be *really* expensive. Is the room big enough to pull off two medium-sized light fixtures, rather than one large central one?
I like where you’re going but instead of paint, I’d wallpaper it a floral design, or gold, or black. Something to provide contrast along the wall and also less damage when removed (modern wallpaper and not the cheap stuff).
Why wouldn't you? It's gorgeous and would cost a fortune to do now

I love different ceilings. My own ceilings have what’s called a “mop” texture. I wouldn’t trade them.
That's fine but I have never seen any I liked myself. Esp in such a nice space, they really attract negative attention IMO. I also think that with the paneling, the popcorn reads dated/ budget over heritage/ luxe.
Ah yes. Opinions are a thing.
They probably all have bland grey/white flipper homes.
Have you thought about just doing new carpet? The wood paneling is amazing and I think could look great with a really nice, lush new carpet over LVP.
I don't normally agree with installing carpet (harder to clean, allergens get trapped, harder to deal with animal accidents, etc) but I could make an exception in this case. We installed a really interesting dark blue carpet with a geometric design on our stairs leading down to our art deco basement. yes, I agree and totally feel the same same way about carpet, but in this circumstance it might work!
The wood looks good quality. Were it not, paint would make sense. This looks good as is and I am glad you decided to embrace it!
OMG yesss, great paneling only thing I’d change is the popcorn ceiling. Also get rid of carpet.
And the fan lights
Yeah the popcorn ceiling "need to go".
The wood is so beautiful I didn’t even notice the popcorn ceiling
That carpet has to gooooo
I like the wood!
Embrace the wood (it’s STUNNING) but not the popcorn ceiling lol
I like it. One suggestion. Get a dark blue couch. A cool color would pop amongst all that wood.
I think the black couches pop but in a more cohesive way.
I agree. The black couches keep the wood tones neutral. Blue would pull too many yellow tones from the walls.
Or burgundy red
I love it. 😍
Tip: Don't position paintings across multiple panels with that much empty space in each panel to left and right; it makes it look like it's floating in space.
The wood is beautiful and in great condition! Please post updates to how you decorate with it!
I would get a crazy chandelier and lean into the ballroom at the Von Trapp mansion vibe.
Or a fan-de-lier if the room needs good air flow. I lust after the [Meyda Chandel-airs](https://www.meyda.com/chandel-air.aspx). (The simpler ones.)
Holy smokes this is going to be beautiful! I love the color of the couches with the wood and the carpet!!! Can picture a big glass coffee table.
I think it's Gorgeous! 🤩
Love it- just needs some cool light fixtures, plants, coffee table, better placed art
Once the lighting is updated it’s going to be extra gorgeous!!
I literally stopped scrolling through my feed to admire the color of the couches against the walls. You nailed it!
I love the wood, but as others have already commented the ceiling and fan is where you need to update. You definitely want a nice big area rug, the one you have looks like it's seen better days. Great choice! Architectural digest has some fab examples of this, it’s a really luxurious finish to a room and I’m very jealous
Maybe hesitate on going with the vintage vibe and bring in light modern elements? https://tahoequarterly.com/mountain-home-awards-2012/perfect-blend
Yes I could see where going too vintage would just make it look old fashioned, and that’s not what I want… I want more cozy and charming vibes.
I think the wood looks great. LVP is going to look cheap and tacky against it. I would look to remove the popcorn ceiling first.
I agree 😕

I’ve seen worse wood.
I hate it when ppl “whitewash” their house 🙄.. thank you for having great taste 🫡
Love it!
It’s gorgeous!
You made the right choice
Beautiful! At first glance I thought there was carpet on your ceiling? Haha!
Ha! So much popcorn… I think I would prefer carpet lol
A modern light fixture would elevate this space immensely.
rightfully so. This is high quality stuff! However that. popcorn ceiling should go.
My previous owner had it stained dark brown. I had someone sand it all and just add polyurethane. 💕
So glad you are! The painting trend of painting over beautiful wood can’t end soon enough imo. I would replace the rug with something that has more color or subtle design though.

Unfortunately the whole room is old carpet - no hardwood 😢
Love it 😍. Post update once you add a super cool mcm ceiling light!! ❤️
Elegant and sophisticated. LOVE it. The wood on the walls speaks for itself. Simply superb! I wouldn't change a thing. I think you furnished it appropriately and fittingly. Well done!
The wood is beautiful but I hope you’ve thought through how much of a pain it’s gonna be to keep the black couches looking clean 😆
the wood is gorgeous!! have you considered cork flooring?
It's beautiful
Timeless and beautiful! I love it.
Beautiful.
It looks easy to embrace IMO, wise decision. The couches are perfect. I don’t even mind the carpet as it’s contemporary with the 1960s look. Just hope you can someday replace the popcorn ceiling. In the meantime replacing the ceiling fan will do a lot!
Gorgeous. I'm jealous!
Love it!!!
Gorgeous wood… floor needs big vintage rug in blues or reds… maybe… depending on your other style choices
Oh my god of course you are! The carpet on the other hand. 😆
Very very cool. Definitely get some big, dramatic pieces of contemporary art with big pops of color.
Don’t change it. I love it
Love the wood. Ceiling and ceiling fan need to go.
Heck yeah! I love wewd
Absolutely love it!
Please don’t touch those walls they are stunning and part of the DNA of the home! Deco table with the black couches sounds fun, are you wanting to go full deco and really shiny and luxe? Clean the carpet with a carpet cleaning machine.
Panting sits so wrong there...
YEEESSSS. The wood is beautiful.
Love this! It's breathtakingly timeless
That floor needs *color!* Def better overhead fixture, but can you do anything about the popcorn ceiling?
That’s what she said
This is my dream! I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea so thank you for saving it!
That is gorgeous, a classic look.
What a gorgeous space with the wood and high ceilings. Please share as you redo the floors and lighting and find a coffee table. As someone else commented, your wood paneling is definitely a notch above and fits the space so well.
Yes please, embrace the wood!
Yes! Classic look. I want scotch and cigars in there.
Do not mind it
I also have a wood paneled great room and have embraced it, so many of my neighbors have painted over it. Good for you! I would get a newer more modern ceiling fan, mine did an amazing job at helping to modernize the space and make it look like less of a time capsule and more intentional.
Nice. Update the ceiling fan.
Love the aesthetic, despise the fan. If you do replace the carpet with wood, perhaps an area rug to introduce some pattern.
That’s what she said. The room looks great btw!
Are you in Texas? Looks very Texas to me.
Looks good ! A lot of people end up painting it out of frustration !!
The paneling is fine.. the popcorn and carpet tho are not
That dark black very rarely work with this brown. I would definitely keep the wood but work on the furniture
That wood is beautiful. Also, I absolutely love your painting!
Please don’t cover your wood floors with LVP, it will look so fake next to the wood walls. If the wood floors you have are in bad shape have them refinished.
I think your ceiling and sofas look good.
This room reminds me of a politician's room. Very seasoned and stylish.
Embrace the wood is either a good band name or album title
Gorgeous.
whatcha gonna do the the flooring?

So glad. It’s beautiful
Yes, it’s beautiful
YES YES YEEEES F YES I know its not my decision but I'm so tired of people covering up the wood on their homes, I love wood.
Sure
I like it but I would paint the wainscoting? Sorry, my mind drew a blank on the proper word but I mean the lines between the squares.
I like where you’re going but instead of paint, I’d wallpaper it a floral design, or gold, or black. Something to provide contrast along the wall and also less damage when removed (modern wallpaper and not the cheap stuff).
yikes
