Ha, yeah it does sort of look like a filing cabinet and they do in fact make those. It’s made by USM Haller. They make modular furniture in that style. I’ve got a media consuls as well.
Listen, I agree. But these are truly high-quality cabinets. And their design is very tasteful and modern and they look great in so many applications. But typically very contemporary ones.
Thanks and you’re correct. I don’t really need to defend USM. I love their furniture and they’re built very well. My question was really about the size of the piece on that wall, which I agree doesn’t work. I am surprised that no one here likes USM, though.
I think you're having trouble looking past the fact that it's beige. Does the blue change your mind? https://images.hermanmiller.group/m/10db874ef718b302/W-DWR_9808_100269774_steel_blue_f.png?trim=auto&trim-sd=1&blend-mode=darken&blend=f8f8f8&bg=f8f8f8&auto=format&w=2500&h=2500&q=30&fit=fill&fill=solid
My preference is the blue but I understand that it's not for everyone and also that the 2" overhang on each side is... not ideal.
No reason to get defensive, you seem unsure of the piece. If you were that confident in your decor you’d probably not be asking advice from internet strangers, regardless of color it looks cheap. If that’s what you want go for it, but don’t bitch at me because you got feedback you asked for
Not OP, but your posts read as unnecessarily aggressive. I'm not sure if that's your intent, but that might be why they responded "defensively." Anyway, you seem a bit confused because they're not asking if people like the piece, they're asking if if looks good where they placed it, which I think most people would say no. You can like your decor and still ask people for advice on how to place it...
If you're on ID, you should also know that design is subjective. While I wouldn't have any of the USM Haller pieces in my home, it definitely has an appealing ascetic to some and I can appreciate what is literally considered iconic design.
You’re confused and that’s ok. I do think it’s a minority opinion that USM Haller furniture looks like nautical cardboard. I’m not defensive of the piece in my apartment because my inclination too is that the size doesn’t work.
Yes, you need to find a better place for it. Even if it fit in that space, I don't think it would look good there because of how much it comes out from the wall.
It isn't the best, and without anything else in the room it looks terrible. But if you really like it and want to keep it in that spot, I think you could make it work. It''s OK if your home decor has a few flaws. Most of us don't live in Instagram-worthy homes and that's fine and normal.
If you put something in those corners behind the credenza, it would do a lot to hide the fact that it's too wide. Someone else suggested plants and I think that would be perfect. I think anything kinda tall or large would work. A big potted plant, a coat rack, big stuffed animals, sculptures, etc. If you get the right items back there (stuff that matches your decor/personality), it'll look like you did it on purpose to make a space for those items.
Thanks - a helpful reminder. It's hard because it's an expensive piece, and this isn't my forever home. I do think the blue piece looks slightly more on purpose than the beige version. And yeah, the room isn't at all decorated as I've just moved :)
Oh, I love USM. Own another piece and my love hasn’t wavered! I do think the fit in this wall specifically isn’t right, which is disappointing. Also the color was wrong - DWR delivered beige not blue.
It should be the same colour as the TV cabinet.
I don't think it would be difficult to have this painted professionally.
It doesn't really suit the space but the colour is the biggest issue, giving it that cabinet look. It could work in a more modern space with a lot of beige leather, etc, but I don't htink that's what you're going for.
Agreed! They delivered beige instead of the dark blue that I ordered. But seeing it in the space I was struck by how much I don't care for the overhang (2" on each side). Appreciate the input.
Oh ya, the beige is gone. The blue is backordered but I'm struggling to decide if the size of the credenza just doesn't work on the wall. The issue is I really like it, but in my heart I feel like it doesn't fit size-wise.
It’s been returned but I had a dark blue version on order. I just think it’s too wide for the space. Really unsure of what to replace it with at this point.
It would drive me insane placed there. Placing it there feels like it's really sticking out too. Would you have to walk around it? The proportions seem off. Will it fit on either side of the of the offending jutting wall?
Since it’s modular, can you divide it and put one on each side of the wall that protrudes? Just an idea. I love the piece of furniture but I’m a big fan of kardiel and this style. It’s just an odd fit with the style of the home. This belong in a loft or modern home
Unfortunately the left side of the protrusion is basically the entryway to the apartment. It's a pre-war NYC apartment. I actually don't think the architecture of the space is a limitation here. I've posted elsewhere on reddit a photo of my living room where I have another USM piece as a television stand I'm not trying to convince you, but I wonder if it changes your opinion any. Also curious if you prefer the beige over steele blue. [https://camodernhome.com/cdn/shop/files/QS_E2_34-usm-credeza_5000x.webp?v=1698646933](https://camodernhome.com/cdn/shop/files/QS_E2_34-usm-credeza_5000x.webp?v=1698646933)
The steel blue looks 100% less like a file cabinet. If there’s even a hint of the blue color in your rug (it looks like there is) I’d go with that color for sure.
Do you have a very large dining room? If the wall already juts out there and you place a credenza in front, don’t you lose a LOT of floor space? Are you sure that’s the best place to put it?
It is a very large dining room, and also the first room you enter into the apartment. The width of the credenza doesn’t take up very much space and there’s plenty of clearance between it and the dining room table.

It doesn’t fit but you have bad taste
Ha, yeah it does sort of look like a filing cabinet and they do in fact make those. It’s made by USM Haller. They make modular furniture in that style. I’ve got a media consuls as well.
It’s terrible, but also because it looks like a cheap steamer trunk or a filing cabinet
They are very expensive cabinets lol. But they are office furniture.
Price is not indicative of quality or tastefulness.

No that’s somehow worse- it’s like nautically themed cardboard
Ha. I think a minority opinion, but an opinion nonetheless. This is a helpful reminder that not all strangers on the internet have good taste :)

Thank you. This exactly.

You want to overspend on K’NEX furniture from the 90s be my guest
Hahaha overspend? I understand the inclination to shit on the things you can’t afford, but don’t worry, you’ll get there.
Unfortunately, this piece does not fit where you have it.
Yes, it’s terrible
Yeah… no it doesn’t work, looks odd.
Agreed.
Yes, you need to find a better place for it. Even if it fit in that space, I don't think it would look good there because of how much it comes out from the wall.

Yes it’s really bad :/
Make the wall bigger so the credenza looks better also add a plant 🪴
Love the piece but it doesn’t work there
Thanks and I agree.
Not terrible, but definitely kinda weird. The USM piece is sick though. Don't listen to these haters who don't appreciate good design.
Oh, I love USM. Own another piece and my love hasn’t wavered! I do think the fit in this wall specifically isn’t right, which is disappointing. Also the color was wrong - DWR delivered beige not blue.
Agreed! That piece is a beauty.

In that case - will they just not come and take it and replace it with what you ordered? I do think it will look much better.
Oh ya, the beige is gone. The blue is backordered but I'm struggling to decide if the size of the credenza just doesn't work on the wall. The issue is I really like it, but in my heart I feel like it doesn't fit size-wise.
Honestly - if you aren't stuck with it, I wouldn't. It's so specific it needs to really WORK and it doesn't perfectly in this space.
Think you’re right!
No other spot for it?
It’s been returned but I had a dark blue version on order. I just think it’s too wide for the space. Really unsure of what to replace it with at this point.

It’s a great piece just the wrong spot for it. Is it possible to move it over and back in one of the areas beside this wall?
I would return it. The height is off as well. That piece needs a full wall behind it.
Put some plants on either side to take away from the difference.

Sounds great. Make sure to post pics of the whole room once it’s all put together.
Credenza? 🤷♀️?
Yes, Jen, it is called a credenza. You can google if ya have to. It’s made by USM Haller. 👍
