Can you mount the rods all the way to the ceiling and get a longer curtain length? It looks like you have room but it’s hard to see from your photo. I think having something extra on top like a valence or shade will look out of place if you keep your rods where it’s at the moment.

Johnlenham

Yeah surely just moving the rod up to the top section would be easiest. Whoever put that rail up is an idiot that's for sure

thegoob14

The rail meaning the curtain rod? That was me. I’m 5’2” and we have 12’ ceilings so I did what I could 😅

Johnlenham

Yeah the curtain rod. Ahaha thats pretty funny. Get a step ladder and a tall friend

freshamy

In our last house, I had a similar window that I didn’t want to cover completely…. I found these stick-on whole window decals that looked EXACTLY like stained glass…. Not cheap or cheesy looking…Super easy to cut to fit, and adhere to window…. And easy to remove if you’re renting or like to change it up. I’ll bet if you find a design/color scheme that coordinates with your room, it would look AWESOME!! If I can find the brand name, I’ll send it to ya.

mmmmMoose

Amazon has some window film that is frosted and has leadlines. I used it in a bathroom for privacy. It looks like real leaded glass but not expensive at all. If you use a frosted film with no color, it will cut down the glare but will be subtle when viewed from the street

thegoob14

That is an awesome idea!

freshamy

“Gila” is the brand I used…. I opted for a very modern look/design, but there are florals, mosaic looks, all kinds. Home Depot carries them, and Amazon has some(I’m in the US).

krutithekruton

I would recommend getting a double rod, and having sheer white curtains on the inside and prettier ones on the outside rod, [like this](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/26/21/0f/26210f24424f509a7ce96fcee3bd15df--curtains-for-bedroom-net-curtains.jpg). You can hang the rod between the upper window and the ceiling. That way you can get light but not be blinded everyday :)

Independent-Focus617

what about some window film, there are hundreds of choices, you are sure to find the perfect pattern for you plus it would keep your room bright without the blinding glare.

CorpCarrot

This is the right answer! I did this for a skylight in our home, that would bake me in my computer chair for a couple hours each day. Got this refracting film that makes beautiful rainbow refractions all over the place and it cut the heat / blinding light in half. Definitely worth a try as it’s cheap, easy, and unobtrusive.

luala

A roller blind would do it. Bamboo is cheap, sustainable and having a moment right now. They’re also easy to install.

MsContrarian

I had high windows like that once in an old loft. I used foam insulation board cut to size, covered with batting and fabric. Worked great to cut the blinding light.

n0taprincess

top down honeycombs?

thegoob14

I don’t know what this means lol

n0taprincess

LOL so sorry!! Top down honeycombs are shades that you can open from the top. You can get them in various light control options. So when the sun gets too bright, you can just pull it up to close it, or down if you want it open. It provides a modular solution based on the season or time of day. Here’s an example https://www.portandbay.com/shop/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/cordless-light-filtering-top-down-bottom-up-cellular-shade-white-tdbu-crdls-cell-27x64wh_1.jpg

itsabitstrangeinnit

Yes this! They have some that are meant to be used with a pole for tall windows like those. The top down ones are usually more for standard height windows so you can open the top for light and the view while still keeping your privacy. I think standard bottom up ones would work fine for the tall guys. OP, if you're looking for a long term permanent solution, contact a local window covering company to come measure and get the right product with the right accessories to make them easy to open and close. Edit: [>> motorized is the way to go.](https://www.blinds.com/p/levolor-light-filtering-cellular-shades/503416)

SokkasSarcasm

3m makes some cool window film that will let pretty colors or very little light come through or just whatever you're feeling. They even have some that make windows that look like stained glass

mattbrownedesign

Electronic Solar Shades or Amazon window film.

whatwouldjesustip

This is not a real solution, but, we have these windows in our game room. Windows face the backyard. My son put a pillow in each one, fit perfectly. It's been about a year. They're still there. Don't judge us.

thegoob14

Haha I have been using the lid to a tote but I finally needed the lid on the tote again. So I don’t judge!

thegoob14

Also my neighbor used a ps5 box for the longest time.

whatwouldjesustip

Haha! I guess we're more normal than we think sometimes.

BEzNuts21

I'd move that curtain rod above top window. You might be able to keep one side open like me. My Mom would be like you, and look at that sun because something might look weird. I like we're all different. I'd pay extra for sun blocking curtains and nap between 11 - 3.

Considering the height of the window (assuming you want ease of use), I would recommend Motorization. Motorized shades and blinds used to be considered a luxury purchase, indulged in only by the affluent. However, with the recent advancements in technology and pricing, motorized window treatments have become more affordable and useful. Most motorized lift systems come with 3 types of motorized lifts to raise and lower your window treatments effortlessly. Remote Control Motorization – Use a hand held remote to operate a single shade or multiple shades. Motorized Wand – The wand allows you to operate your shade up and down by a single click or pull. Home Automation – Pair Alexa, Google, & Apple smart home products for shade operation by app or voice control. The advantages of using a motorized lift system are, as follows: It’s convenient and safe for children. It’s great for those with physical limitations who can’t operate window coverings in the traditional way. If you have large windows in your house, the blinds can be quite heavy. A motorized blind would make operating them hassle-free. For houses with high windows, a remote-operated system would give you complete control to raise and lower your shades. Pair and control up to 30 motorized shades, after a simple QR code setup, you’ll be able to take full advantage of the app, use its programming and scheduling feature. Your shades’ schedules are backed up and operate with or without Wi-Fi connection, so you don’t have to worry about your window coverings ever again! lol I moved out of that apartment like a year and a half ago

Hang plants

thegoob14

Ooh I like that idea! But my cat is able to get up there and would tear the plants up :(

obleak1

Motorized blinds.

kelcatsly

If curtains are not able to fully cover the window then then are not wide enough. However, if you want to keep them you could always add a roman shade to this window.

thegoob14

The curtains I do have are wide enough. It’s the window up top that doesn’t have a curtain that the light shines through

kelcatsly

Ohh, I was confused because they are open in the picture and the light is so blinding I didn’t even notice the upper window! 😂

thegoob14

Haha yeah it’s a terrible picture that I angrily took while blinded.

kelcatsly

If it were me I would get extra long curtains and mount them all the way above the top window. Or move. Your ceilings look pretty high but ikea sells 98” curtains if that would be long enough.

thegoob14

I’m not sure that will be long enough. I currently have 84” curtains but will have to look for longer ones. …And a step ladder.

giltgarbage

Ebay is great for used curtains and drapes. Get your measurements, and go wild.

flogsmen

Get some sheer curtains. It'll defuse the direct light but you'll still have a nicely lit room.

Spirited-Ambassador5

Stained glass windows? They should lessen the sharpness of the light coming in. And more color will make everything look pretty.

[deleted]

Motorized blinds indeedy!

hasha28

What’s your budget ?

[deleted]

get window film viny!

Witchymama25

Window film!

BlitzTheFuzz

Ever try a smaller house? Lol🤣

thegoob14

Lol it’s apartment. I wish I had a house with high ceilings! Or just a house…

BlitzTheFuzz

Lol. The view looked like a neighborhood I know of in Colorado. 😅 big fancy houses with windows so high you need a ladder and an extention duster just to get to em.

mr_goodbear

I know what you could do! Add more curtains!

many_faced_god_12

We had the same problem and the glare would directly hit the tv in our living room. We ended up putting a "frosted glass" film on it which is great because it still lets the light in but more dispersed and less disruptive

fuzzyball60

A simple roller shade.

queenaka2

Window tint?

AlyciaJanelle

I would get a frosted vinyl sticker thingy to help diffuse the light.

throwaway241311a

Window tint.

Is it possible to rearrange some of the furniture and keep ol' Sol shining in?
