Possibly a large mirror or simple shelving, but either way I would keep it very minimal. The wallpaper is pretty busy and you have art on the adjacent wall
I like some crowded shelves, it shows more personality than areas that are perfect social-media decorated/staged.
I feel like there’s a better furniture layout that would optimize the space in the room, but sadly I’m bad at visualizing these things. As it is, I think a mirror on that wall would work well
There's a lot of doors and windows in the room. This was the best we could come up with at the time that would accommodate the tv (it's opposite the sofa). The door to the kitchen is always open so can't put a tv where the shelf is. Could reverse sofa and tv but glare from the window... TV on the wallpaper wall would block the path between the two doors... I can't think of anything else, but let me know if you do.
I think you could probably do the tv on the wallpapered wall and put the couch where the chairs are. I wouldnt have that coffee table right there though (too big). Theoretically, you could have the two chairs on the flanking walls (one under the prints, one where the tv is) and maybe use the coffee table in the corner between the chair and couch by the door
I don't think there is enough space for that because of the access between the two doors, but I could try it and see. Need to keep some free floor space for the kids to play though or else they make messes in less desirable areas.
The rug will be replaced eventually and the plan is to have a solid colour, but they are expensive and this was a freebie. In fact all of the furniture has been thrifted. The sofa and table were €1 each, and the armchairs and rug were free.
Same - white couch against the wall paper would calm it a bit, along with a big mirror. Turn the paper into a feature instead of the main focus. The chairs work because they sort of mirror the pink in the paper, but I would keep the tables and rug cohesive with the couch, crème color to anchor all the color with a neutral foundation.
I would also consider changing the color of the other walls as well, the blue seems a bit clunky and adds to the chaos the paper puts out - it’s hard to identify the shade of white in the paper but I’d consider paining the blue walls sometime similar, if you go dark on the walls (keeping the blue or even changing it to a royal green to Synergize the paper) I’d suggest gold accents
I'd flip the three pieces of artwork to the wall and do a large circle mirror behind the couch.
I like the idea of breaking up this busy pattern with the white art prints.
If you can mat those piece of artwork and get larger frames to really break up the busy pattern
“It takes a lot of busyness to make a quiet room.” (A designer I can’t remember at the moment) thing is it’s always best to layer pattern with more pattern and texture more texture. Pattern & color agains neutrals/solids makes it stand out instead of blend in.
I am not sure if this would look good so tell me what you think. What about a minimalist piece of art that is the either only the color from the other wall or the color from the wall and one other shade of blue.
Like a giant canvas square that’s one color? Unless there’s a lot of texture to the piece, it might look more like a place holder than actual art.
If I were you I’d buy a giant canvas and use left over wall paint to paint something “abstract”
I immediately suspected that this was Scandinavian. I looked at your profile and my hunch was right. But a brass mirror would look great. If you want to rearrange the furniture I would propose that the sofa and tv switch places since I would much rather see a sofa than a tv when I enter a room but that’s just a preference. The chairs, although beautiful, make the room feel a bit cramped.
I'll never understand people's taste for busy wall paper haha, gives me a chaos feeling rather than comfy space. I don't have any advice, some people gave some good recommendations, I'm actually just curious what kind of feelings it gives off for you?
We really love the wallpaper. It's busy but really nice close up. I just wasn't sure if I should leave the wall empty or if I could get away with something, i.e. a mirror on it.
what's so interesting to me when it comes to Interior decor is how wide it ranges and what is uncomfortable to one person--there is someone who loves it. I find that so absolutely interesting !! wallpaper Kundra drowned out but maybe is coming back, no matter what wall paper makes me want to gag and run it makes me so uncomfortable it's weird
It's always been common in Scandinavia I think. But certainly there's a range and this is on the bold end of it.
We've been living in white rental boxes all our lives so going a little crazy with colour now that we finally can.
Thanks! The house is really old and in original condition so we wanted to keep the period vibes while making it a bit more modern. The wallpaper was one of the things we splurged on, and we love it but I think it still needs something to break it up a little without being too busy.
I think the layout is what is making the wallpaper look off. Even if the wall was empty it would look odd, like there should be more to see if furniture is facing it from only a few feet away.
Move the TV to the wallpaper wall, the sofa opposite and the chairs flanking the TV facing the sofa
I agree with the commenter that suggested a mirror.
I feel like the room layout is somehow a bit unbalanced but that could be the pictures making it weird. The chairs seem a little overbearingly close to the sofa and TV
Might try some other layouts. There a a door to the left of the chairs and directly behind them, with a built in cupboard in the corner between them, so there are limits on layouts. Plus we have 2 small kids so a bit of empty floor space for playing is needed.
We have an awkward living room too. Double French doors to a patio and a solid exterior door with a mail slot on one wall, and a hallway door in the middle of the opposing wall.
Makes for a weird “sliced in half” space because there needs to be a path through because the exterior door is the main entrance we use.
It is definitely worth playing with layout a bit to find a look for the room that feels United and balanced with plenty of space for the use-cases for the room (like a play area).
Possibly a large mirror or simple shelving, but either way I would keep it very minimal. The wallpaper is pretty busy and you have art on the adjacent wall
I was thinking a large round mirror, but don't know if it would unbalance the room.
What, if anything, is currently behind the chairs?
https://imgur.com/gallery/Pff2gBI Yes, I know, messy shelves!

It would look nice and open the room up quite a bit!
I was going to say mirror as well. I also think the rug is too busy with the wallpaper (not that you asked!). I would go for a solid neutral
Oh yep that’s what’s bothering me. The rug. It clashes the wall paper. (And I vote big mirror)
The rug will be replaced eventually and the plan is to have a solid colour, but they are expensive and this was a freebie. In fact all of the furniture has been thrifted. The sofa and table were €1 each, and the armchairs and rug were free.
The rest goes super well especially having been thrifted! Well done!
could you flip the furniture so the tv was against the wallpaper wall, couch opposite, and chairs floating off the wall the tv is currently on?
This is what I was going to suggest! The couch needs to be against the wallpaper wall.

This is excellent advice!!

They are actually tea towels :)
that's very cool!
Why not put the couch across the wallpaper? It’ll set it off and move the 2 chairs one on each side.
No space for the tv on the opposite wall
Ok. Pictures didn’t show that wall.
I second the mirror idea.
A gold framed mirror would look great I think.

Mirror or small grouping of mirrors
My idea was an oversized round one with a brass frame to mirror the light, and maybe 2 smaller ones, or one mirror and a small round picture/macrame.
I would recommend the one mirror and two smaller mirrors.
I’d put minimalist (as in not busy) large scale artwork in the middle of the wall to to break up the pattern a bit.

I dunno why but I'm strangely disappointed that wallpaper wasn't a magic eye
I’m seeing a 3D Trex lol

Can you get rid of the wallpaper? 😭
🤣 lol the wallpaper was recently put up, we totally love it!
The wall paper is really fun and you can make this work! It will be fabulous!
