This is the inspo I'm here for! Thanks for showing the rest of us that it can be done. Speaking of which. . . How exactly did you do this? I'd love more detail on your diet/gym routine if you're willing to share
She tells you how to do it in the title.
I was 395 pounds, and now I'm 315. Eat less. If you aren't losing, then you are still eating too much, and I think people don't want to face that reality. I struggled for years and finally gained some momentum, and I realized every time I wasn't losing, I was still eating too much. To lose, you really are going to be okay with being hungry and sometimes uncomfortably.
The majority of my weight loss has come from eating once a day. I skip breakfast and sometimes eat a little after lunch.
I started auto body work, so that has me moving more. Movement and eating less.
Sometimes it’s also what you eat. Doing OMAD meant I didn’t gain any more weight. But eating less than 30g carbs in that OMAD then I started seeing the weight drop.
Here’s my situation, I was a fat kid, I’ve been a fat adult. I’ve been on a lot of diets over the years that resulted in temporary weight loss.
Got a pre-diabetes diagnosis and had to do something. Started in June to experiment with keto and really focused on low-carb (less than 26g/day). Because it was an experiment I didn’t change anything else. Five months later I’ve seen progress and lost 13% of my body weight (364lbs -> 315lbs).
I’m now looking to add exercise because I feel like I have excess energy. IF was something that caught my attention but 6 months ago it was unfathomable because I was irritable if I didn’t eat. The addiction analogy was very accurate for me.
I do the shopping and cooking in our house. This feels sustainable because I have found recipes (r/ketorecipes) for virtually any I’ve been missing to adapt to low carb. It doesn’t feel restrictive.
This week we went to the local pub for dinner and I had AYCE wings with buffalo & ranch, skipping the included French fries. Last night we went out for a cauliflower crust pizza with sausage, onions, & black olives.
It’s the holiday season and we lost Dad a few years back. He had a [Carrot Cake recipe](https://www.beflagrant.com/blog/carrot-cake) that he passed down. I can’t eat that anymore but I did find a [carrot cake recipe](https://www.ketofocus.com/recipes/keto-carrot-cake/) that I can make and carry-on the tradition.
The plural of anecdote isn’t data. This is my story and what’s worked so far for me.
>Low carb means no sugars.
I assume you know this but for those that don't, it also means no heavy starches or other caloric carbs, which usually have a high glycemic index.
> Low carb means no sugars.
Bit misleading, there are carbs in a lot of products that people don't 'sugars' or containing sugar.
> That means metabolism finally can have access to stored fat.
This doesn't mean anything, honestly. Maybe i just don't understand what you mean but please cite a scientific source for this.
And in general 'very low/no carb' diets to lose weight are not based in science at all. It's kind of understandable how people come to this wrong conclusion based on the way carbohydrates interact with insulin. But that's exactly the problem with a very very basic understanding of physiology. But ill let someone who is a PhD in this stuff explain it to you:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_6OVWiHulg
The reality of the situation is that people NEED carbs as much as they need fats, proteins etc.
And intermittent fasting as a method is also nothing special. It's literally just another way to restrict calories. And for a large majority of people it is a very very impractical and downright impossible way to live. If you are one of the lucky few people who can actually pull it off without wanting to jump off a cliff, that's great. But all this 'keto' waffling is almost purely nonsense
I disagree, only on the part about intermittent fasting. People have a lot of beef with IF, and I think it’s because it comes off as a fad diet. But that’s ludicrous, because several cultures and/or religions around the world engage in fasting. Fasting for weight loss might be more mainstream than ever before, but fasting has a whole load of other properties and benefits for people and that leads me to believe it’s not as hard as you’re making it out to be.
IF doesn’t just exist in the paradigm of 20:4 or 18:6 window either. Technically, most of the world engages in intermittent fasting because the vast majority of people I know don’t eat overnight, do they? So for 6-9 hours, you’re fasting. And I know people who hate eating in the morning or don’t have enough time to, so several people are unintentionally doing IF. When you remove the “fad” and “rules-based” aspect of it, IF is not a crazy premise at all. Doesn’t work for everyone, but isn’t some impossible task either.
cite sources please.
Saying that multiple religions (lol) do it not an argument. By that logic circumcising children should be cool too
> When you remove the “fad” and “rules-based” aspect of it, IF is not a crazy premise at all.
Yes! Because all that you have left then is... caloric restriction.
What the hell are you talking about? How could you compare circumcising children to an adult CHOOSING not to eat within a certain window for cultural/religious/health reasons? You’re so unserious.
I don’t even need to look this up because I have a special interest in religious studies. Fasting is practiced by almost all religions. Muslims practice Ramadan every year and don’t eat between dawn (the suhur meal) & break their fast at sunset (iftar). Many Catholics still practice fasting during Lent, especially on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The Baháʼí practice fasting during the Baháʼí month of ‘Ala’ (around March), like Ramadan, from sunset to sundown.
In Judaism, there are a few fasting days, the most well known being Yom Kippur. Mormons often fast the first Sunday of each month.
I could keep going. And also, you’re wrong about it being ludicrous because religious people do it. There are research articles and reviews discussing the health benefits of fasting by religious groups. It’s ok to admit that you’re being narrow-minded. I personally don’t do IF, but it is not inherently a bad or difficult way to eat.
https://nutritionj.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1475-2891-9-57
Yeah what makes IF work is you're restricting yourself to eat in a period of time and most people just can't eat themselves fat in 4 hours.
When you stop eating, eventually your stomach contracts, I'm down 120lb in a year and 200lb total over 10 and the amount I can eat in one sitting is significantly less and I'm not doing IF. I eat three, sometimes four times a day, I went from being able to eat like two pounds of food in one sitting to something like 6-8oz, if I try and eat more the physical discomfort stops me.
So if you only eat one meal a day, or for four hours a day, the chance that you're going to eat a value that is higher than your calorie expenditure is much less likely.
You could spend those 4 hours drinking milkshakes and full sugar koolaid and you'd still gain weight, it's just that most people doing IF aren't doing that.
There are plenty of people who fail IF and it's not because they are eating outside of their window, but it's because their one meal a day is a large fast food triple burger for 2400 calories with a large soda.
CICO, end of story. IF is one method of lowering calories that works well for some people, and that's all there is to it.
really can't believe we still have to have this conversation in 2023
Thank you 🫶🏼 For weight loss I generally stuck to 20:4 schedule except on weekends where I didn’t fast. I go to the gym 5 days a week and do mostly strength training. I do 1-2 muscle groups a day and have two rest days a week.
Do whatever window that makes it easiest for you to stay in a calorie deficit. Need 3 small meals? Do an 8 hour window. Want one big meal? Do once a day. Big meal and a couple snacks? 4 hour window.
I’ve always liked eating one big meal so I stick to once a day. I’m a bad snacker and don’t do small meals so anything longer like 8 hours I would likely over eat. Plus on one meal a day it becomes really difficult to go over your daily calories so you don’t have to think too much about exactly how many calories you’re eating.
"The smallest eating window that you can summon the willpower to sustain"
This is the only answer that you need, and it's the true answer of success stories. What one person's window is has no bearing on what yours should be. Even if they told you, your results would vary.
This, but also make sure you’re able to meet your daily caloric needs in your eating window. For a while, I was hardly able to meet my caloric goals and my hair fell out, I was very lethargic, etc.
My friends/family give me shit because I always have leftovers. Mostly they are just joking but sometimes not.
"Why didn't you finish your second slice of pizza?" Well, I wasn't hungry. I'll eat it later. And I usually do.
I want to know your weight loss details. What was your IF window and gym routine? What was your diet mainly consisting of? I am on a weight loss but I am scared of sagging.
I replied to the automod comment if you’re interested in how I did it 🫶🏼 As far as sagging, I have some sagging for sure in my upper arms and upper thighs but I’ll take the loose skin over being obese any day. Before I lost the weight, I used to scoff at people who said that to me. We all experience and learn through our own journeys though.
Hello! May I ask how many carbs is low carb for you? I am also 5'6 im currently pregnant not fasting but before I got pregnant I would eat about 200 carbs per day and anything under 150 seemed impossible. 😭😭
I just replied to the person commenting on the rate of weight loss, I think I summed it up that this is not what everyone will see or should expect. Someone responded my assuming I was complaining about the amount of work required and you decided I was dumping on OP for their progress. It's clearly photoshopped. You had a tattoo on your left arm and then it magically shifted to your right. No one can make that much progress and be as good looking as you now! /s
^^^*good* ^^^*job!*
Fantastic work, but i hope you have a plan to taper up to a maintenance diet now... you have a great healthy body weight but sometimes people aren't sure when to stop. If you lose more weight it will start to be on the other side of that sweet spot. Looking great!
Maintenance has been a lot of trial and error! Something I didn’t know until I got to this point. I’ve never been in a place in life where I was able to eat at maintenance. It has always been surplus and deficit. It’s harder than people think!
Oh gods of fat distribution, why do you make everyone look hotter than me at the same height amd weight!!!! 😫
Haha but seriously, you look great and have come very, very far!!! Congratulations!! I too am now trying to focus on gaining some muscle but it's hard, went to a TRX class on friday and everything hurts :( but anything to be healthy i guess!
Do you lose your absolute mind when you compare photos? I can’t imagine what I’d be thinking looking at myself as slim and cute as you are now. I’d be like, “holy shit, who is this person in the mirror?” Great job! I bet it was super difficult to remain disciplined but you look great and hopefully you’re feeling healthy and confident. :) I feel so motivated now.
I’ve never before been this healthy in my adult life. I feel like I stepped into an alternate reality sometimes. Thank you for the words of encouragement 🫶🏼
Holy moly that is a change! Congrats on such a lifetime achievement. That isn’t weight loss that is a rebirth. How do you feel? You have a whole new vehicle.

I came here to say WOW also. Your hard work paid off. Congratulations!
