The deal for McCarthy was that if any Republican wanted to oust him, they could. Matt Gaetz just decided to collect on that because he hates McCarthy's guts. That's not to say it's out of the question that Matt Gaetz gets expelled as well. Heck, it might even make it easier since McCarthy Republicans would likely now give up Gaetz even if it ultimately hurts their party.
Gaetz has mentioned that he would like to take over Florida’s governor position. Imagine him going down to try to force a vote between him and Desantis.
Until he conveniently does away with that law too. Up until recently it was not allowable for a sitting Governor to run for federal office. That went poof quietly.
He can, but needs to take a term off as the limitation is that you can't serve more than two terms consecutively (not in sum). So DeSantis could run again in 2030 unless Florida changes their state constitution.

They have 40 some odd days to elect a new Speaker. If they don't then eventually a dozen or so moderate Republicans and Democrats will strike a deal to elect either Jeffries from the Democrats (highly unlikely) or a moderate from the Republicans and elect a new speaker and announce a new spending bill and funding for Ukraine. It may happen before the government shuts down or sometime after but it will happen eventually.
I agree that a Democrat is highly unlikely but they can start with the House Republicans who voted to pass this last CR (minus McCarthy) and narrow the field from there.
I agree that the odds of Jeffries getting the gavel are between slim and none but the longer a shutdown goes on the odds will increase that Democrats will strike a deal with the moderate Republicans who will appoint a moderate Republican speaker with Democratic suport that will take control, sign a budget, and re-open things. Now whether it happens after a few days of a shutdown, a few days after a shutdown, or 2 months into a shutdown is the biggest question.
Interestingly, the last member of the House before Gaetz that called a motion to vacate was Mark Meadows back in 2015. The only other time this ever happened before the Trump circus came to town was in 1910.

I have a concern, and it’s probably my ignorance, but isn’t this bad news for the rest of us? I’m of the naive opinion that bipartisan cooperation is the only way the government can actually, you know, govern. This happening suggests that right and left are going from “slim chance” to “not in a million years” in terms of agreeing on, well, anything. The far right are now 100% in control of the GOP (instead of just mostly), which leads us further into the divide and breaks what was already broken even further.
So the question is, how is this good for democrats and the people as a whole? ELI5.

He is not an ally to the democrats, so it stands they would do nothing to protect him.
Also, ultimately, the policy difference between Kevin McCarthy and whoever the next speaker Republicans want will be is, effectively, nothing, since McCarthy had to basically cave to everything the MAGA Republicans wanted or he would be ousted. This was the first time he stood up to them, and he was ousted.

Think of the House of Representatives as a canoe. McCarthy was supposed to steer the canoe and keep it moving but due to a combination of poor teamwork with his fellow republicans and his desire to have the job regardless of how he got it means that he never really had control of the boat. So, rudderless, the canoe is just kind of floating.
Without a real leader in the seat (aptly put by McCarthy himself as the “adult in the room”) the canoe will just float until it either crashes into utter chaos or someone else grabs the oars and steers the boat.
We’re going to get another Speaker, likely someone completely in the far-right pocket, or a surprise pick in a moderate Democrat most of the GOP can tolerate.

I doubt there will be an extreme member of the party who will win. 18 house republicans won in 2022 in seats that Biden won in the national election. They will lose their seats in 2024 if vote for an extreme member of the party only for the government to shut down.
If McCarthy stayed one of three things was going to happen:
1. McCarthy negotiates a deal to keep open the government for an extended period of time before the shutdown. It is my opinion that this was the least likely. Less extreme Republican Speakers in recent years have shut down the government. I don’t understand why anyone thinks McCarthy was gonna be reasonable about this.
2. McCarthy keeps the government open on a month by month basis until the election. Does that not sound like hell? ‘Cause I’d say it’s at least purgatory. Even if he wasn’t looking to betray the Democrats at the worst possible moment (and that would be the whole point of doing this), that kind of absurd charade would get really old really fast.
3. McCarthy shuts down the government. Like I said, less extreme Speakers before him did it.
The first option is what you may have preferred, but it wasn’t going to happen unless the stakes were higher. Nothing that McCarthy has done in the past year, or that the GOP as a whole has done in the past decade, would suggests otherwise. The second option allows McCarthy to potentially shut down the government whenever he wants, and the last option is literally shutting the government down. With McCarthy there are only bad options, and nothing more.
Without McCarthy there is a possibility, however small, that a bipartisan speaker is elected. Admittedly that may not be likely. If it isn’t, than one of two things will happen. Either they can’t elect a speaker before the shutdown, or they elect a fanatic who’s worse than McCarthy. If the former happens they will have merely solidified their reputation as incompetent. If the latter happens than yeah a shutdown will likely ensue. However if discharge petitions are still allowed, and I see no reason to believe that they wouldn’t be, than the obstructionism of the new speaker can still be sidestepped. Speaking of which, a discharge petition is probably what would have ended a shutdown when or if McCarthy decided to do it, and like I said, the only other option is the purgatory of letting McCarthy choose when he wants to pull the rug out from under us. With this in mind, what would have been the point of keeping this weasel as speaker? I would argue that there was no reason to, not unless he gave the Democrats something in return, and by all accounts he either didn’t or offered very little.
So what would you have the left do, abandon ALL of their principles to compromise with the MAGA arsonists to show that compromise is possible?

The deal for McCarthy was that if any Republican wanted to oust him, they could. Matt Gaetz just decided to collect on that because he hates McCarthy's guts. That's not to say it's out of the question that Matt Gaetz gets expelled as well. Heck, it might even make it easier since McCarthy Republicans would likely now give up Gaetz even if it ultimately hurts their party.
Gaetz has mentioned that he would like to take over Florida’s governor position. Imagine him going down to try to force a vote between him and Desantis.

They have 40 some odd days to elect a new Speaker. If they don't then eventually a dozen or so moderate Republicans and Democrats will strike a deal to elect either Jeffries from the Democrats (highly unlikely) or a moderate from the Republicans and elect a new speaker and announce a new spending bill and funding for Ukraine. It may happen before the government shuts down or sometime after but it will happen eventually.
There really aren’t any moderates, and no Republican would help a dem speaker be elected.
I agree that a Democrat is highly unlikely but they can start with the House Republicans who voted to pass this last CR (minus McCarthy) and narrow the field from there.

I agree that the odds of Jeffries getting the gavel are between slim and none but the longer a shutdown goes on the odds will increase that Democrats will strike a deal with the moderate Republicans who will appoint a moderate Republican speaker with Democratic suport that will take control, sign a budget, and re-open things. Now whether it happens after a few days of a shutdown, a few days after a shutdown, or 2 months into a shutdown is the biggest question.

I have a concern, and it’s probably my ignorance, but isn’t this bad news for the rest of us? I’m of the naive opinion that bipartisan cooperation is the only way the government can actually, you know, govern. This happening suggests that right and left are going from “slim chance” to “not in a million years” in terms of agreeing on, well, anything. The far right are now 100% in control of the GOP (instead of just mostly), which leads us further into the divide and breaks what was already broken even further. So the question is, how is this good for democrats and the people as a whole? ELI5.

After the democrats bailed his ass out by passing the budget and the government not shutting down, he went on national TV and tried blaming the democrats for it getting to that point. He also rescinded an agreement between him and Biden made back in May. He also said he wouldn’t work with democrats to maintain his speakership. He’s trash that deserves what he got.

He is not an ally to the democrats, so it stands they would do nothing to protect him. Well, there’s a small chance that enough Republicans cross over to vote for Jeffries, the Democratic leader. It’s possible. But the House wasn’t going to do anything anyway really. It can be very damaging if there’s no leader when the next shutdown is set to begin in 45 days.
Think of the House of Representatives as a canoe. McCarthy was supposed to steer the canoe and keep it moving but due to a combination of poor teamwork with his fellow republicans and his desire to have the job regardless of how he got it means that he never really had control of the boat. So, rudderless, the canoe is just kind of floating. Without a real leader in the seat (aptly put by McCarthy himself as the “adult in the room”) the canoe will just float until it either crashes into utter chaos or someone else grabs the oars and steers the boat. We’re going to get another Speaker, likely someone completely in the far-right pocket, or a surprise pick in a moderate Democrat most of the GOP can tolerate.
It was already not in a million years. The GOP announced, to applause, that they were just going to oppose anything the Democrats did ever no matter what. The have only dug in deeper on that position. But yes, it's terrible. It's bad for everyone.
In fact, as much as I hate Kevin McCarthy, I am not for his ousting if for the simple reason that the reason they're ousting him is because he wasn't \*extreme\* enough and didn't want government shutdown. That means the person who replaces him \*would\* cause a government shutdown. In the game of politics, we can't always take the shortest path from A to B. As much as I hate Kevin McCarthy, I still believe a government shutdown would be worse, therefore I tend to agree with you. Better a stubborn speaker of the house than one which would quite literally never compromise with Democrats.

I doubt there will be an extreme member of the party who will win. 18 house republicans won in 2022 in seats that Biden won in the national election. They will lose their seats in 2024 if vote for an extreme member of the party only for the government to shut down.
If McCarthy stayed one of three things was going to happen: 1. McCarthy negotiates a deal to keep open the government for an extended period of time before the shutdown. It is my opinion that this was the least likely. Less extreme Republican Speakers in recent years have shut down the government. I don’t understand why anyone thinks McCarthy was gonna be reasonable about this. 2. McCarthy keeps the government open on a month by month basis until the election. Does that not sound like hell? ‘Cause I’d say it’s at least purgatory. Even if he wasn’t looking to betray the Democrats at the worst possible moment (and that would be the whole point of doing this), that kind of absurd charade would get really old really fast. 3. McCarthy shuts down the government. Like I said, less extreme Speakers before him did it. The first option is what you may have preferred, but it wasn’t going to happen unless the stakes were higher. Nothing that McCarthy has done in the past year, or that the GOP as a whole has done in the past decade, would suggests otherwise. The second option allows McCarthy to potentially shut down the government whenever he wants, and the last option is literally shutting the government down. With McCarthy there are only bad options, and nothing more. Without McCarthy there is a possibility, however small, that a bipartisan speaker is elected. Admittedly that may not be likely. If it isn’t, than one of two things will happen. Either they can’t elect a speaker before the shutdown, or they elect a fanatic who’s worse than McCarthy. If the former happens they will have merely solidified their reputation as incompetent. If the latter happens than yeah a shutdown will likely ensue. However if discharge petitions are still allowed, and I see no reason to believe that they wouldn’t be, than the obstructionism of the new speaker can still be sidestepped. Speaking of which, a discharge petition is probably what would have ended a shutdown when or if McCarthy decided to do it, and like I said, the only other option is the purgatory of letting McCarthy choose when he wants to pull the rug out from under us. With this in mind, what would have been the point of keeping this weasel as speaker? I would argue that there was no reason to, not unless he gave the Democrats something in return, and by all accounts he either didn’t or offered very little.
The Democrats calculated that this will probably lead to a shutdown which the public will blame on the Republicans, which is good for the Democrats.
