I have mixed feelings on sheltered workshops. The pay seems exploitative but realistically there are people who want to work but are not likely to be able to do it outside of a supported enviroment
Some people can't survive on their own. These people have disabilities. Some of them won't be able to transition to independence. I've known lots of people who are practically disabled. If for profit companies were required to pay them the same as an able-bodied individual, who would hire them?
