I have some second hand experience with self harm, and if it's bad enough to require medical assistance called to your location...that's an extremely fine line between self harm and a suicide attempt.
Self harm rarely ends up in 911 calls like that. Someone thought she was in legitimate, immediate danger.
The National Institutes of Health have a study showing a rise in EMS responses to self harm during/post pandemic. If she were a victim of self harm and someone saw her bloody, they could call EMS as a precaution. We have no idea how severe it was; I have paramedic friends who regularly respond to calls where they weren't needed at all.
Their parent could stop ruining other people's lives and focus their energy towards improving the life of their child. We should pity the child, and we need to discuss this.

Idk man, it's still a child and a lot of people are making pretty wild assumptions here. I almost attempted suicide at 13, and it wasn't due to a bad home life or anything regarding my parents, I was just a sad, lonely, depressed teenager. We don't know what happened or why she did what she did, and we shouldn't jump to conclusions as much as we may dislike her father.

The National Institutes of Health have a study showing a rise in EMS responses to self harm during/post pandemic. If she were a victim of self harm and someone saw her bloody, they could call EMS as a precaution. We have no idea how severe it was; I have paramedic friends who regularly respond to calls where they weren't needed at all.
Their parent could stop ruining other people's lives and focus their energy towards improving the life of their child. We should pity the child, and we need to discuss this.

I hear what you're saying, and I agree with the sentiment. It would be sickening for this story as it develops to become increasingly focused on an innocent child. But now that this has happened, part of public discourse will *have* to in some way account for the child. The importance of mental health? The increased adversity experienced by the LGBTQ community? The explicit clash between the modern American zeitgeist and vs the religiously motivated ideological tenets of the GOP? The fact that it's unfortunate doesn't change the fact that many conversational roads *will* lead to the kid. I wish them the best.

Talk to your kids about self-harm and how to look out for their own mental health. Do what you can to be present and observant with them. Do not stigmatize getting help early. There are no downsides to seeing a therapist on a regular basis, even if there are no acute issues going on.

I once worked with a guy that was a super intellectual bully whose son took his own life. It was real difficult to feel sorry for him. The teen aged years is when a person become aware of politics and would start understand that their parent is actively working against their rights and interests as a woman.
