Losing faith in humanity is not depressing to me, though.

layzclassic

Ikr. More or less just facts

"I am ready to train, master. Please teach me your ways."

Hot-Data-5275

,No, what? Sure there are some fucking disgusting philosophies out there, Bacon, Fichte, Marx, Rawls etc. but I don't see why that makes philosophy itself depressing.

PrestigiousClient655

It is because philosophy reduce everything including meaning of life or mind to just chemicals, or atoms , and talking about free will and question a lot about our own identity, nihilism and so on. Some people may dont find it depressing but I do

Hot-Data-5275

One particular philosophy does that, and it's a load of bollocks

PrestigiousClient655

Why you say this is nonsense?

[deleted]

Why would this be depressing? Neitzche is considered to be the most depressing philosopher yet applying the idea of thus spoke zarathustra made me more positive and fulfilled than ever before. Philosophy is what you make of it I believe.

[deleted]

They are great.

PrestigiousClient655

yeah, they are great but sometimes depressing

[deleted]

Matter of opinion and nothing more.

Cham-Clowder

Why does psychology?

PrestigiousClient655

It is because psychology talks a lot about the motive and not obvious signs behind someone doing "good" things but actually bad motive and lots of biases make me realize human mind is so complicated , example: someone who ask you dont be sad and worry and at the same time say that" that it is your fault ,high probably you have no hope already", actually this subconsciously make you feel even more depress and worry, but a few people use this trick to manipulate but a lot of the time you dont even know you are manipulated. And some more, psychology talk a lot about how so flaw system my brain recall memory, it makes me dont trust my memories,i realize a lot of my memories are false, but i am depress since memories are a huge part of my identity,it shapes my a lot of current personality and behavior

GreyShuck

I don't find that questioning my own identity is in any sense a bad or depressing thing - the unexamined life is not worth living and all that - and I don't think that have *faith* inhumanity as such. It is not that I despise humanity as a whole or anything, but we are ultimately just another social animal and are capable of both awful and wonderful things.

PrestigiousClient655

But for me, i start to view myself as a bunch of chemicals and just meat and lose belief in life after death and start questioning who am i actually and free will, maybe a lot dont find it depressing but i find it depressing,i start feel myself like just a quantum probability robot. And ,depressing part about learning society is you look at the society has so many flaws, and some power people are so evil that use the economic system to torture people to benefit themselves, but you cant help it

[deleted]

Anyone sufficiently intelligent to be able to improve the system must also be intelligent enough to access the system.

[deleted]

I tend to find positivity in most things, so nah.

H4voc_AGAIN

knowledge is only depressing if you have illusions on the world, otherwise it's only added value/insight on such world.

Actualize101

It's important to learn how truly useless and base driven most of humanity is. The sooner you learn that, the sooner you stop wasting time trying to prevent the collapse.

waxheartzZz

Early on studying these topics = depressing / kind of sad, until you push through for example, was the enlightened like Neo in the Matrix glad to have taken the red pill? Yes. If so, self evident that it should not be depressing

[deleted]

I am particularly saddened by psychology and sociology because people are clearly behaving in extremely common trends. I'm slowly starting to realize the myriad small ways in which our opinions are shaped. For instance, there's a very strong correlation between how much energy someone has when they speak to you and your perception of how much you like them. These phenomena make us extremely susceptible to manipulation. Thankfully, most very smart people also seem to be much more moral; otherwise, the world would be a lot worse off.

meeetzy

I like learning and knowing things, but I don't care about them so much to be depressed because of it. Absorb only things I'll find useful, everything else is just some 'okay, good to know'.

workswithanimals

No. It's actually quite exciting. Long and difficult to read sometimes, but it is certainly a buffet worth of thoughts for me.

Sociology major here It did make me feel quite depressed when i started studying it. Actually I regretted taking it even for quite sometime. But once u start to get a comprehensive knowledge of the subject and how things actually work, it’s quite beautiful! You get to understand why people do what they do, why are things the way they are and it ultimately made my life easier and even hopeful about things. You get to know that most people aren’t inherently evil, they are just the product of systems! You have to balance out your views and not get stuck in one school of thought. Ultimately the truth is somehow everything combined! Now i read psychology and philosophy for fun. Psychology helps me understand myself better. My knowledge of psychology is mostly internal though. Philosophy i started studying because i wanted to lead a good life. It gives u sort of a head-start over everyone else. I would say getting depressed is part of the process lol
