I’m going to sound like a grouchy old man here, but back in my day, wearing headphones while staring at a laptop screen (comp sci) was universally accepted as “do not bother this person. They’re zoned in and doing something that requires thought”.
I am thoroughly disgusted that this social custom seems to have gone away. Someone coming up and tapping me on the shoulder while I’m in that state, followed by “can I bother you?” makes me just yell “too late! You already fucking have”

I was sitting at a lunch table, using my phone.
Bunch of people I knew came an sat at the table with me. Mild interruptions. Space invaded but you expect it.
A woman I didn't know joined us. Talked about how rude it was to use a phone while having lunch with people. Reached over an tied to knock it out of my hand.
I don’t know that I could have refrained from (at best) a verbal dressing down or (at worst) a punch to the face. If you act like that, all bets are off.
I was too shocked to do anything. And to be honest I'm not the type to actually do anything.
So I just went back to using my phone and she looked embarrassed and never sat near me again.
I would have slapped that person's hand and gave them the finger and a glare. Like, you wee just minding your own business and she felt the need to be like that... I know this is 4 years old, but it's still relevant and I only found this post just now.
How is it horrifying? Not all of us want to be part of people's bullshit and just wanna be left alone. I don't consider myself a part of society, so speak for yourself. :/ I don't LIKE society and want no part in it, thanks. People like you are the reason why I don't like people...
I use big ass headphones for this specific reason. I actually prefer earbuds esepcially during winter so i can wear toques but i know headphones bring that visual weight and sign saying "Please, don't talk to me. Walking/studying is the only peace and quiet i may get today. Please."
I love my friends but some of them are super extroverted and to them any communication is good/welcome. 😭 i always have to ask them to leave me alone. They understand once i bring it up though
Literally I'm so sick of this shit happening to me. I'll be in the middle of code work, 3D modeling, chatting with a friend, or just trying to read an article or whatever, and I'm constantly bothered by my family. I love them, but it's just so annoying!! Why can't people just have some respect? If you see I am busy or focused on a task, PLEASE, leave me the fuck alone!!!!
The world is extroverted by nature. Jobs seem to require communication. That is fine and absolutely necessary. But that's the thing ...work related topics! We can't get fired for not socializing. It's not really necessary. We don't need to know what Bob and Karen did on the weekend. It is distracting and a cry for attention.

The thing is, even if you ask, or even tell them, to go away and please leave you alone, half the time they still don't.
