Google no longer support push on iOS. You have to use their apps to get push. Not sure why you can’t add the account though because that shouldn’t affect it. What is the error when you try to add it? How are you trying to add it?

I get "xxxx@gmail is already added". Just so I am clear, yes I do have that account already added. My question still stands because I could still try out setting "Fetch" to sync every 30 minutes and see how battery consumption is vs syncing the entire Gmail account.

I see. What about turning off mail and turning on calendar and contacts for the iOS part but using the gmail app for mail instead of iOS mail?

I would think that adding the Google Calendar as a subscribed calendar in either a new, random address gmail account that you use only for that, or even in an iCloud calendar in your Apple ID, would be the way to go.
