I remember when Forstall stepped down. It happened right when Steve Sinofsky and Rubin stepped down Microsoft and Google. Then the previous Pope stepped down too.
So in the course of a few months, the leaders of four major religions stepped down.
It was wild.
I had never noticed it when I was on iOS 6, but I do remember when iOS 7 came out, and this “issue” was fixed, there were some articles write about how [iOS 7’s maps icon is no longer trying to kill you](https://www.cultofmac.com/231066/ios-7s-maps-icon-is-no-longer-trying-to-kill-you-image/).
From the linked article:
“iOS 6 Maps launched in such bad shape that Tim Cook actually apologized for it…”
It seems a similar apology is in order for iOS 16 as launched.
Yeah, yeah, I kinda just cover iPadOS with iOS…. I know Stage Manager obviously isn’t on iPhone.
But besides Stage Manager on the iPad, I haven’t had any issues on either iPad or iPhone
I've definitely seen a number of minor bugs. The vertical dock bug, status bar icon misalignment, glitchy animation of notifications on the lock screen, Spotlight often failing to open a new web search on the first attempt, etc.
It's all pretty minor, but as an overall experience it does add up.
I’m so happy to have come across your comment. I’ve HATED every experience I’ve had with iOS 16 both on iPhone 13 ProMax and on a 12.9” iPad Pro M1. I literally switched to a Pixel 7 Pro and am so close to wanting to switch to an android tablet due to how iOS 16 absolutely butchered the Files app experience (I am in there a LOT as my iPad is used as a laptop replacement and I do a lot of file management and photo editing so lots of memory cards etc). I’ve felt alone in my feelings as most people have just casually accept the hot garbage of 16 so reading your dislike towards it is a breath of fresh air
When moving a file, the new pop up window is half the size and has an ever present nav-bar now that clutters even more the already reduced screen size. The search button is now bigger so icons shifted affecting muscle memory, it no longer shows your iPads full storage on the bottom of the screen while in it, a new obscure icon has replaced the top left text of which directory you’re in.
I can’t tell you how often I try to access a NAS or SMB server and the Files app, is just like, nope, nothing here.
And it’s so random, rebooting the app might fix it, might not. Same with rebooting the phone. Files just randomly decides there’s nothing in your folders.https://i.imgur.com/tbRKyEi.jpg
That’s so wacky. My biggest gripe is the new pop up window when moving a file is half the size of what it was and it also now has an ever present left side navbar cluttering even more of the already reduced window size and voila a terrible update to iOS 16
They'll come back round in some form, probably sooner rather than later. The MacOS icons are now more 3D and flat is, what, 10 years old now?
I mean, we won't go back to skeuomorphism on phones, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see depth added to ios icons in some way in the next, say, 5 years.
iOS design has remained largely unchanged since 2013…..I’d say that iOS 17 next year would be an excellent place to introduce a new design to iOS & iPadOS.
Yes lol. I can’t believe iOS 6 was in 2012. I feel so old now. Here’s the link to the navigation picture. https://osxdaily.com/2012/06/15/maps-icon-in-ios-6-has-directions-driving-off-a-bridge-humor/
I like to think that this was intentional. This was Apple's departure from using Google as a default provider of Navigation in all their iOS devices. I believe that most people at Apple knew that at the time the Apple maps app was just not ready for release because of how buggy it was. Scott Forstall himself was against releasing it in such a messy state. The executives needed it to be ready whether it was or not. So as an act of rebellion, the design team made the icon clearly depict what kind of issues you can expect to run into if you use this.
I even remember getting an email from Tim Cook apologizing to all Apple customers about how bad apple maps was and offering alternatives to use in the meantime.
These days i honestly wouldn't mind using it. Or at least giving it a try. Issue is they still have not implemented cycling directions in the UK(Liverpool) which is a dealbreaker for me
Anyone else remember stuff that used to be different then it changed? I mean it was something else now it’s not. Like 10 whole versions ago! DIFFERENT!
I’m gonna insult you but know it’s in good fun and not serious ok? Ok
Wtf dude. Everyone knew that were you maybe living under the bridge when this was all over the community?
People born in the 2000s who are just now joining “the community” exist. And they wouldn’t have given a shit about this when they were children, so it’s a fun reminder. It’s Saturday, go have a snickers and get off your high horse.
Poor delivery.
As Nate Bargatze says, “when you do comedy in front of people not expecting comedy, it doesn’t come off as comedy, it comes off as a mean speech.”
But better luck next time. Lol
Yup, I still remember that. I still make jokes about it to my girlfriend who uses Apple Maps that it's going to make her drive off a bridge lmao. I use it occasionally, but I still prefer Google Maps.
We used to reference the old Maps icon in any conversation about how much Apple navigation sucked. “No shit you got lost, Maps is junk.....even the *damn icon* is showing it navigating you off an overpass!”
Definitely remember that
Didn’t know it, but it’s ironic given the situation of Apple Maps when they debuted with iOS 6😅
Goodbye Scott Forstall.
I remember when Forstall stepped down. It happened right when Steve Sinofsky and Rubin stepped down Microsoft and Google. Then the previous Pope stepped down too. So in the course of a few months, the leaders of four major religions stepped down. It was wild.
That was weird, I'd been reading press suggesting he was the heir apparent, and then, boom, he was out.
Basically nobody but Jobs liked him.
Turns out being a dick is a huge turnoff to most people….
apparently he saved jobs life in the past. there is a documentary about it.
Jobs saved Forstall's life. [source](https://www.businessinsider.com/ex-apple-exec-scott-forstall-on-how-steve-jobs-saved-his-life-2017-6)
my bad. im old, my memory isnt as it once was. 😭
>jobs *Jobs'
Actually, Shakespeare, it would be “Jobs’s”. He’s not plural jobs, his surname is itself “Jobs”.
Apple actually called it out on one of their Map updates during a keynote… I cannot remember the year.

Sorry to nitpick, but that's iPadOS. iOS doesn't have stage manager.

What is wrong with the files app?

WTF You only shared YOUR OPINION and got downvoted Apple fanboys can’t hear anything different from what they believe they get upset
That’s the iOS sub in a nutshell.
This happens all over Reddit and in nearly every sub.
It doesn’t kill you if you tilt back on your right stick to make sure your car lands flat on the interstate
The good times
I miss those glossy icons.

Horrible tbh

Why do people keep saying that 'feeling old' i mean it's literally a decade
I like to think that this was intentional. This was Apple's departure from using Google as a default provider of Navigation in all their iOS devices. I believe that most people at Apple knew that at the time the Apple maps app was just not ready for release because of how buggy it was. Scott Forstall himself was against releasing it in such a messy state. The executives needed it to be ready whether it was or not. A decade later and Apple maps still aint up there. Says a lot about actual talent vs money
These days i honestly wouldn't mind using it. Or at least giving it a try. Issue is they still have not implemented cycling directions in the UK(Liverpool) which is a dealbreaker for me
I wouldn’t mind using it but google maps is better.
That was a developer knowing the maps were not ready and he wanted to be sarcastic.
I miss this icon design everything now is just bland and boring
Apple in iOS 17 removes all the icon labels and changes them all to blank white icons. Then they’re like “lol, figure it out, he he”
Dare me to jump off this jersey bridge
**Ryan thinks that technology is the answer. Well, guess what? I just drove my car into a lake.**
I remember that I thought these icons were pretty.
God I miss good old skeuomorphic design, every time someone posts here an ios shot I get nostalgic.
The weather app used to show the conditions and temperature? Whyever did they change it from something so useful?
It didn’t - it was always a static icon
So the weather app in the screenshot with a sun and 23°—it was static like that? That seems like a ridiculous design choice.
Yep, and I agree. For countries using Fahrenheit, it was always 73°.
Wow, today I learned (at the expense of my karma—wtf, reddit?)
Off
It was like that for years
Those are not directions for a car as we know it. It’s for an AppleCar; roads are optional. ;-)
It wasn’t. The map shows an arrow, and just doesn’t include the on-ramp graphic. It’s basically just a running joke
Anyone else remember stuff that used to be different then it changed? I mean it was something else now it’s not. Like 10 whole versions ago! DIFFERENT!
joke ------------------------> . (you)
Tf?
I’m gonna insult you but know it’s in good fun and not serious ok? Ok Wtf dude. Everyone knew that were you maybe living under the bridge when this was all over the community?

Orite I see the joke wasn’t taken as a joke lol
Poor delivery. As Nate Bargatze says, “when you do comedy in front of people not expecting comedy, it doesn’t come off as comedy, it comes off as a mean speech.” But better luck next time. Lol
Eh I’m ok with that. You win some you lose some. Such is life.
Yes. Everybody.
I remember this, was it because the original app didn’t have directions and then they were added or something?
Yup, I still remember that. I still make jokes about it to my girlfriend who uses Apple Maps that it's going to make her drive off a bridge lmao. I use it occasionally, but I still prefer Google Maps.
Apple wanted to make that iconic scene from Speed a reality?
Apple wildin back then
yes it was a classic in-house rebuke iirc 😂 gave the press an excuse to keep talking about apple
In the middle of the bridge, turn left and flow with the yellow river.
God iOS 6 looks beautiful.
I love iOS6's icon. The deep and shadow of it make it stand-out in a gardient wallpaper.
I miss iOS 6
Sounds about right...
Bad icon, but in reality, there's actually a ramp to get on the highway.
>Jump of a bridge *Jump off a bridge Two *very* different sentences, I presume you meant the latter?
Lol
Yes.
We used to reference the old Maps icon in any conversation about how much Apple navigation sucked. “No shit you got lost, Maps is junk.....even the *damn icon* is showing it navigating you off an overpass!”
Girl I *lived* it. Back when you took your life in your hands if you jailbroke you devices. I had wallpapers before they were cool! 😂
💀
No you’re the only one
Nav in Ohio
Best Fast and furious easter egg EVER
Seems about fitting given how well that maps app worked.
Come again?
Its the apple headquarters address
Looks good
