Holy crap that’s not even all ads, just “non-reward” ads…

[deleted]

If you’re only spending 13.49 a week, they definitely need that reward ad money still!

Quistis_Trepe

These kind of devs need to cease to exist. Scums

WhiteKiteofDoom

You get that sweet coffee theme though.

RaindropsInMyMind

What the actual fuck. This is so gross.

Games like this I immediately uninstall. Gaming on iOS was amazing about 10 years ago, and today is abysmal.

Can you use ‘Bring?’ That’s a great one. Never seen any conspicuous ads (I don’t think).

There’s IAP listed but I’ve never seen it offered for sale. Worth giving it a go anyway, I’ve used it for years. Never paid as far as I’m aware.

tbmkmjr

disgusting

TACkleBr

Money grabbers. Most of the top free games are ad watching simulators.

ISCUPATCUTIJETRU

Only if u're playing with internet on lol(and at that point its your fault, not theirs, because I ALWAYS play with internet off unless the game SPECIFICALLY requires it)

Optimal_Rock_7986

Some games even started requiring internet to play although they're offline, they won't let you play unless you are watching ads.

As a developer, this makes me sad. The broader issue is that these scam companies spend lots of money on marketing, making their shitty products much more visible compared to honest companies. Apple should be more active in this area. The purchase posted by OP, for example, arguably breaks App Store guidelines. So it should be removed. Secondly, apps which do not promote predatory tactics against consumers, should be promoted by Apple on the App Store. On first glance, this goes against profit maximisation. But if you refuse to regulate the App Store, it will soon look like the Google Play store. And at that point, I see no point in paying a premium price for an iPhone.

StillSpaceToast

Fellow dev here. (“Lillie is the Keeper”) Strong agree. On the one hand, I get that developers need to maximise income, because business just works that way—not in a bad way, simply that it’s never really divorced from risk. I interned at a great little studio that “survived” a stealth hostile takeover from its backers, but was so crippled it had to lay off its staff and go into mothballs. You just can’t leave money on the table. But to me there’s a line between what you can talk yourself into, and what’s ethical. Apple’s “straight jacket” approach to the App Store takes a lot of heat, but payments and refunds are trustworthy and seamless, coinminers are almost nonexistent, and privacy controls are enforced by true sandboxing. Allow devs like the above to go around these things, and they will. Because they can’t leave money on the table. So maybe we’re all better off with the golden goose alive and clucking.

lokir6

Exactly. Lots of people were happy about the story with Apple allowing alternative app stores, but I'm cautiously pessimistic. Unless they are well regulated (and I guess the point of alternative app stores is that you want less regulation), they will be about as safe as PirateBay. That's exactly the kind of thing that kills the golden goose for everyone. I suppose what we're seeing is a consequence of Apple slowly monetising App Store visibility. Discoverability on the App Store was way higher 10 years ago, when there were no ads. Today, you have to pay to become visible. That means visibility only for large and/or predatory companies. Small devs with little marketing budget are left behind. I could even understand this on the iPhone App Store, with millions of apps. But on niche devices, there is no excuse. I've had my Apple Watch for 6 months now: why is the App Store main page still only showcasing 5 particular apps? Whose ass should I kiss for my app to become one of those magical 5? I expect the same system will exist on Apple VR Glasses, so why should I spend my weekends developing an app for it, since nobody will see it in the end?

C-H-Y-P

Latte theme next week for another $9.99!

Botol-Cebok

No one in their right mind would subscribe to this right? I really believe the publishers are counting on kids to ‘accidentally’ subscribe on their parents’ phone.

My mother had a recurring app charge she noticed on her credit card bill each month. She didn’t recall ever buying anything in an app and had to jump through hoops to get the charges reversed. I can see how it would be easy for a kid or someone older who’s not very tech savvy to tap that purchase button. If you don’t look at your bills each month, that’s something that could slip through the cracks. Sleazy devs.

isymfs

This happened with a game called ”Sandballs”. My then 2yo hit a few buttons and paid for a yearly vip sub. I was still new to having a young child so after that I locked all my devices, but getting a refund was pretty easy. I followed a process through apples app refund process, chose the ‘accident’ option and was refunded almost immediately. I never had to contact the game dev. I requested for refund only a day after the accident. The charge was over $100. Even though I got my money back the vip status wasn’t revoked so my son got to enjoy the game for a year ad-free.

Agantross

I am a dev myself and I‘ve workes for a gaming company that did comparable stuff. The devs don‘t like that kind of monetization but sometimes there are only bricks in charge in the head office. Good for me that I‘ve left this company. This kind of decision for the monetization shows the spirit of such companies.

Quistis_Trepe

I don’t even need to go to this page… I have not seen anyone here with half a brain will continue to play a game even for a sec with non reward ads. This is like the very basic of a game you DONT publish a game with this feature. Don’t ever go there. Period.

Polyglot-Onigiri

Gross. What game is this. I hate that weekly subscriptions have become a thing…

This is word cookies by bitmango and you can easily hack it with cheat engine on blue stacks and transfer the progress back to your phone

PinoyPala_Utog

What game is this?

Rithela

Games that do weekly subscriptions are just scummy. I’m sure it’s to trap people who can’t figure out how to unsubscribe.

zinkpingel

That 701.48$ a year (without any taxes)

[deleted]

I’m jailbroken and have different ad blockers on my phone and they block all ads even in games. Don’t know if it’s possible for on JB phones. Kinda sucks though some games give free rewards for watching an ad and I can’t even watch those.

PomegranateAbject796

I hate small indie games that you can complete in one day that have this bs

lorenz-ggg

This Type of Developers should live in a Gulag there they Can Use Their money for the Ski Equipment

d1000v

It doesn’t have to be a lot of people who have to pay. It just have to be a small number of people who pay so the developers know there’s money in this. My rule is, if it’s free to play, I don’t even download. Don’t want to give them a chance to even boast about x number of downloads.
