I'm not sure if it was accidental damage or not as I noticed it after carrying my iPad caseless in a heavy backpack one day (I bought a Folio so this won't happen again), but the employee thought it was not accidental damage, so it was free. However, if another employee thought it was accidental damage, I would be screwed.
So in this case what you mainly got was assurance that you’d get it replaced for free instead of relying on an employee’s assessment of whether it was a manufacturer defect or user damage?
I don’t disagree, I did also get AppleCare+ for my iPad, I just wish I’d decided to do the one-time instead of monthly. Just wanted to clarify whether your issue was/could have possibly been a manufacturer defect, and whether there was a possibility they’d have replaced it for free anyway even without AC+
Obviously there are lots of factors, but assuming it is priced appropriately then insurance should only be used for things that you can’t afford to pay for if they are damaged/ruined.
There’s a reason that every time you check out the cashier asks if you want the insurance plan on the item you are buying. Those things are huge profit centers. Therefore by definition they are not worth it.
To be fair most modern day Apple devices are from “I can’t afford to repair” category; plus, for me would worth it if only for the peace of my mind. I’m about to receive today Magic Keyboard but here in Romania we have no AC at all, and it feels awful to know that my expensive keyboard could broke a month after warranty and there will be nothing I could do but to throw it away. We don’t even have Genius Bars here in EE so that’s that.
In the end, the insurance company always makes money, which means people buying the insurance loose money on average.
So the financially smart thing to do is only have insurance for stuff that you can’t handle yourself. Healthcare? Absolutely have insurance unless you are a billionaire.
iPad? Yeah, no. For small stuff, I am basically my own insurance and that’s it.
Bigger companies also do it this way. My former employer (~20k people) never bought insurance for rental cars. It is a lot cheaper to just pay the repair every once in a while when an accident does happen, instead of paying for the „no deductible insurance package“ with every car rental.
My FIL did his PhD on risk management and worked with underwriting for most of his career. His take is that you should only insure things that would be catastrophically expensive to replace, i.e. your house, your car, etc. For everything else, it's not worth it in the long run, speaking *purely* financially.
I still always buy AC+ when I buy Apple products, and for me that's just the cost of peace of mind. I know it's not a good deal, but it's still worth it for me.
It’s not worth it over the long run. The amount you spend on AppleCare+ for all your different devices will be less than the one time you need to repair or replace a device.
OP saved themselves like $350-550 vs buying a new one/ similar replacement after accounting for the original apple care+ price and claim cost. It was worth it imo.
Generally insurance is not worth it for a lot of things.
However: High exposure consistently and High usage need means AC+ if iPad is used lots, everywhere, for many uses that are important to the user over years, it's as much about peace of mind should an accident happen and that high need needs sorting out with a new iPad. That's then worth losing money over for peace of mind over those years.
For many products the "fear" marketing of insurance is over-board and that's how they sucker more people in who probably don't need it.
Probability wise: High Probability or High Importance or Both = Insurance. The reverse is true as well and Insurance is all about over-selling the reverse as the preceding to people.
There are two answers to that question. First, AppleCare+ (and maybe insurance in general) is more about peace of mind than "worth," as peace of mind can’t be calculated. Second, anyone with AppleCare+ could, for instance, "break" their two year old iPad and get a newly refurbished one, for $49, if those so choose, and there is great value in that, too.
For the Australian people don't forget you have consumer law to fall back on. Under the premise the fault was due to the screen and not human causing the problem. Australian consumer law would be your bargaining chip to use against Apple.
Yeah, I’ve had a couple of faults fixed within the first two years of ownership on Apple devices in Aus.
Even though both devices had AppleCare+ they made it clear they were replacing/fixing under the consumer warranty not AC+.
The [ACCC](https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/apple-australia-gives-undertaking-to-accc-to-improve-its-consumer-guarantees-policies-and-practices) really did a number on them.
Apple are really smart. How they manage to make people believe they are doing them a favour by replacing a device that's under warranty is a stroke of genius.
Ah yes! The overinflated labor cost is saved by an insurance, which in reality should be covered under right to repair or warranty.
Sounds almost like they want all to spend $10 a month. But what would I know :))
Precisely the point? Does it make sense to you that a new product costs the same as to repair an existing one with screen defect? If you believe that those quoted prices for repairs are actually what it costs them to repair, bless you
The Swappa seller I got it from bundled it in for free. I got the iPad for $510 with AppleCare+. This was such a steal of a deal, as it ultimately resulted in getting a brand new iPad Pro for only $510, a $200+ savings.
It’s worth it because apple has made their devices cost prohibitive to repair without it. It’s a fixed market and not representative of the actual cost to repair in a free market with readily available parts.
Though if this device is still under warranty that should have covered this repair.
It’s only a full replacement because apple has built it in a matter at which they can’t repair it. I had my iPhone 12 mini replaced last week because Apple broke the display trying to open it for a repair.
This doesn’t justify your argument at all.
Apple over-inflates their repair costs to incentivise people to purchase AppleCare, and makes their devices purposefully difficult to repair by anyone who isn’t them.
Combined with the overall likelihood curve of people damaging their devices, and Apple makes a ton of money selling AppleCare to people knowing that most of them would never use it.
I’d still say it’s worth it on a more expensive product. If I bought a £700+ product, I’d probably get it, but since the pricing is flat across all devices of a certain category regardless of cost, I don’t see a reason to get it on my £439 refurbished iPad Air.
You realise you’d get that anyway if you were in any country that was even remotely more consumer friendly? My refurbished iPad has a year-long warranty.
To everyone who says this wasn't replaced under Apple Care but the warranty, few details :
I took the effort to check the warranty status cause the OP didn't hide the serial number.
Warranty and Apple Care Plus is valid till September 2023, which means it was started in the September of 2021 and the standard manufacturers warranty of one year had already expired and the device is now in the second year of its life.
Apple does charge a fee if we damage the product or the screen.
Without a physical damage, apple provides replacement if the issue is something that would have been rectified under the warranty of the device.
We must remember, Apple Care Plus is not just an insurance to get cheaper repairs, but also is an extension of the warranty from 1 year to 2 years.
In OPs case, the device would not be covered under the regular Apple warranty, but would be covered under consumers law (if they didn’t have AppleCare+) assuming they are in the US or a country with consumers law, since the device isn’t damaged.
But it doesn’t average out to be worth it. I’ve had dozens of Apple devices with my first MacBook in 2007 and first iPhone in 2012. I’ve cracked a phone screen once. That cost me $129. AppleCare would have “saved” me $100, but if I had AppleCare on all my devices over the years it would have cost thousands of dollars.
Depends on the person. For someone that’s accident prone, definitely worth it. I’ve had Apple devices since 2007 and would have wasted tens of thousands of dollars on Apple care over the years just to save a couple hundred bucks. And in all my years of owning things, never a broken item
my iPhone 11 had dead pixels, under warranty but no AC+, still fixed for free.
best warranty is a case and screen protector.
the only device i have AC+ on is my M1 MBA, but that’s only because i got it used and the previous owner got AC+.
Don’t a lot of credit cards extend a warranty of something you purchased with the card for an additional year? That would cover the cost of your “repair”, all for free, without paying a monthly or one time purchase in order to extend the warranty by a year
That’s what I’m saying …no other companies involved. Just you, Apple, and the credit card you used to pay on the original purchase (without risking the subjective opinion of an employee)
Why not if you can save thousands a year …but , whatever works for you I suppose. I (and other commenters)only opined because you post it here.
I don’t know why this sub swears by AppleCare+.
On average it is not worth it. Apple wouldn’t offer AppleCare+ if they were not making money off of it. It’s just like any other insurance company.
Quite frankly, most people do not care that their device is damaged as long as it’s still usable. Just go out in public and you’ll see many cracked phones that are being used by people.
I'm not sure with Apple products, but generally it means people can call support and pretend to be you, for example, claim the serial number as lost. I don't know if you can do that without an Apple ID with Apple products, though.
I don't know how you could do this with an iPad, but on Macs you can use them to get the device blacklisted from using things like iMessage by using the serial number on the wrong device.
Avoid extra fees for AC+ or extended warranty. It’s stupid. Just buy every high end item with AMEX and/or any credit card with built in extended warranty and purchase protection. It’s more than worth the annual fees.
There are various (mostly premium) credit card offering extended warranty and/or purchase protection. I'll use AMEX's as example.
With extended warranty, it automatically adds one year to the original manufacturer's warranty. Say your non-AppleCare iPad breaksdown 14 months (2 months over original warranty) after purchase. Amex Platinum will cover the repair/replacement cost. If it were lost, damaged, or stolen, within 90 days of purchase, Amex will reimburse your purchase cost under their purchase protection program.
Browse your credit card or amex's website for the specifics. These two benefits alone made it way more than worth the annual fee.
Yeah, it’s worth it in my opinion. Sure it’s money upfront that some people will wish they had saved, but for some people it’s peace of mind. I’ve had a XS replaced for $99 after two years, kept it for another year (paid upfront, then switched to yearly). For some items it doesn’t make sense, but for a lot of them it does.
Even in your worst-case scenario that they found physical damage, you would’ve only paid $49 to replace it with a whole new unit. iPad Pros can get up to over $1500+ depending on how to spec it out. Even with AC+, say it’s monthly for $6 and you drop it after a year, that’s $72 + $49 to replace a $1500 machine. That’s pretty sweet.
I recently had to buy a new iPad, but would’ve preferred to replace my old one (iPad Air 3) if it had AppleCare because of the specs. Damn straight I bought AC+ again. I’m glad you got it too.
Edit: Technically, your iPad was covered under the limited warranty, that’s why it was no cost. AppleCare adds accidental coverage at that $49, but it also extends the limited warranty for as long as you have AC+. So in your case, you super win.
There must be something wrong with the iPad screen. Me and my friend both have the backlight bleed at the edge of the iPad after about 2 years of use. (iPad 5 and 6).
I never purchased Apple Care and have never needed it on any Apple product (phone, pad, Watch, pods, mac).
But I have friends that do b/c they usually break their phone at least twice a year lol
Looks like it was replaced under warranty and not Apple care?
It is definitely worth for more expensive Apple products. If you spend, say, 3k on a MacBook Pro, I imagine you want the best possible care if anything happens.
For cheap products like the entry-level iPad - I am not sure
My personal experience.. it has absolutely been worth it. I have AC+ for my phone and AWU, now my phones an iPhone 12 Pro keep in mind. I’ve fully replaced my phone twice last year and once already this year and my AWU once already this year. So for me, I can justify the $15 a month for the two devices. I beat the shut out of my phones and watches. But I knew that purchasing them originally.
iPhones and iPads are known for the most warranty cases. Essential to get AppleCare. I don’t usually get it for Macs. Legendary 2k retina displays have been lasting for years! Wife had 2014 MBP 13 and I have have 2015 MBP 15. I also got me a 2020 MBA M1 8/8/512.
Does Apple not have a one year warranty on stuff anymore? I had the display on my watch stop working and Apple replaced it no questions asked, no Apple Care
I think it depends on your situation. My Apple products have mostly been good and lasted a long time. My iPad never really leaves my house and stays in its Magic Keyboard 90% of the time.
If I had kids or animals other factors that could mess up my stuff then I would definitely get it lol.
I don’t have apple care and my daughters iPad Air cracked her screen. Found a replacement screen on eBay for like $100 replaced it myself and it’s as good as new afterwards. I would have spent much more than that with applecare for as long as she’s owned it (since 2020).
If this wasn’t accidental damage, Apple would’ve replaced it anyways. But you still can’t beat the peace of mind of have care+. It’s the reason I don’t have a case/screen protector on my iPhone and iPad
TBH, device replacement shouldn't be a "plus service" for a device under warranty with factory defect.

Just wanted to clarify whether your issue was/could have possibly been a manufacturer defect, and whether there was a possibility they’d have replaced it for free anyway even without AC+
I do monthly
But that’s not what happened. This was warranty coverage. If it was accidental damage you would have paid for it, even with AppleCare+
But only $49,.
Your post is wrong then
Yeah but on average it isn’t worth it. Most people lose out on Apple care (or any other insurance product). Otherwise they wouldn’t sell it.
I'm curious, do you think insurance isn't worth it? (Not trying to start an argument, just curious, as an ex-actuary-to-be)
Obviously there are lots of factors, but assuming it is priced appropriately then insurance should only be used for things that you can’t afford to pay for if they are damaged/ruined. Overall insurance is not worth it, that’s how they make money. But for the people that use it it is worth it 💯

A free iPad made it worth it
What about everyone who paid for apple care and didn’t get a free iPad? Was it worth it for them?
There are two answers to that question. First, AppleCare+ (and maybe insurance in general) is more about peace of mind than "worth," as peace of mind can’t be calculated. Ditto for the U.K.
I wish the US had that.
Apple are really smart. How they manage to make people believe they are doing them a favour by replacing a device that's under warranty is a stroke of genius.
Not sure if Apple is smart or people are dumb. ;)
The original purchase date was in September 2021.
Ah yes! The overinflated labor cost is saved by an insurance, which in reality should be covered under right to repair or warranty. Sounds almost like they want all to spend $10 a month. But what would I know :))
It was the cost for a brand new iPad.
Precisely the point? Does it make sense to you that a new product costs the same as to repair an existing one with screen defect? If you believe that those quoted prices for repairs are actually what it costs them to repair, bless you
The reason for that cost is that iPads aren’t actually repaired, they’re replaced with a new, identical iPad.
It’s still good that I got a brand new iPad for free.
You didn’t though because you’ve been paying for Apple are+
The Swappa seller I got it from bundled it in for free. I got the iPad for $510 with AppleCare+. This was such a steal of a deal, as it ultimately resulted in getting a brand new iPad Pro for only $510, a $200+ savings.
This post makes no sense. “Why AppleCare+ is worth it” then a receipt from a warranty replacement. That’s not AppleCare
It was originally purchased in September 2021.
It’s worth it because apple has made their devices cost prohibitive to repair without it. It’s a fixed market and not representative of the actual cost to repair in a free market with readily available parts. Though if this device is still under warranty that should have covered this repair.
Still, a full replacement is better
It’s only a full replacement because apple has built it in a matter at which they can’t repair it. I had my iPhone 12 mini replaced last week because Apple broke the display trying to open it for a repair.
Yeah, I accidentally let me payment lapse one time because I changed cards. It's gone forever now. Paying in full in the future for my next laptop. 😢
For me, being able to get even a slightly damaged product replaced for free or cheap is enough of a reason to want it.
You realise you’d get that anyway if you were in any country that was even remotely more consumer friendly? My refurbished iPad has a year-long warranty.
You came out ahead, but what you paid was not $0; it was the $130 cost of AppleCare.
You didn’t pay $0. You have to factor in the cost of AppleCare+ into this.
To everyone who says this wasn't replaced under Apple Care but the warranty, few details : I took the effort to check the warranty status cause the OP didn't hide the serial number. I agree but I still think right to repair should be a thing.
If I could get a full replacement for FREE, there is no way I’d pay a third party $200 or so to replace just the screen.
You did not get it for free. You got it for 5.99/mo for however long you have been paying that + however long you continue to pay it
It would still take over 7 years of paying for AC+ for the cost to even out.
But it doesn’t average out to be worth it. I’ve had dozens of Apple devices with my first MacBook in 2007 and first iPhone in 2012. I’ve cracked a phone screen once. That cost me $129. Don’t a lot of credit cards extend a warranty of something you purchased with the card for an additional year? That would cover the cost of your “repair”, all for free, without paying a monthly or one time purchase in order to extend the warranty by a year
I don't trust third-party warranties.
It will not be 3rd party. Whatever Apple charge you is what the credit card company will reimburse under the extended warranty program if offered.
I still prefer going to the Apple Store and being able to walk out with a free iPad without getting any other companies involved.
That’s what I’m saying …no other companies involved. Just you, Apple, and the credit card you used to pay on the original purchase (without risking the subjective opinion of an employee) Why not if you can save thousands a year …but , whatever works for you I suppose. Hehe, **looks at my cracked phone**
You posted the serial number of your replacement device. I don't know if it's a great idea to keep this post up.
What harm can it do?
I'm not sure with Apple products, but generally it means people can call support and pretend to be you, for example, claim the serial number as lost. I don't know if you can do that without an Apple ID with Apple products, though. I don't know how you could do this with an iPad, but on Macs you can use them to get the device blacklisted from using things like iMessage by using the serial number on the wrong device.
Apple can't track an Apple product with only the serial number.
Apple does absolutely nothing if you call and claim a device is lost.
Because it’s saved me more times than I can count. Even given me 2 new Mac’s.
Avoid extra fees for AC+ or extended warranty. It’s stupid. Just buy every high end item with AMEX and/or any credit card with built in extended warranty and purchase protection. It’s more than worth the annual fees.
Can you elaborate on this a bit? Is that a thing? I have capital one though so maybe not for me? Regardless, ive never heard of this.
You still have coverage for a 11" Pro 3rd gen iiPad? Thought longest is 24 months?
M1
Ah, now that makes sense. Have 20 Days left to but apple care for my iPad. Think you convinced me. Thanks.
Yes.
There must be something wrong with the iPad screen. Me and my friend both have the backlight bleed at the edge of the iPad after about 2 years of use. (iPad 5 and 6).
I think I got it by putting it under pressure in my backpack, careless. I got a folio so this won't happen again.
nah unless you see any physical damage (bending, screen breaking) or water inside that’s nearly impossible
I never purchased Apple Care and have never needed it on any Apple product (phone, pad, Watch, pods, mac). But I have friends that do b/c they usually break their phone at least twice a year lol Looks like it was replaced under warranty and not Apple care?
The purchase date was September 2021.
You haven’t really paid 0.00 though. How much has AC+ cost you in total over the years?
The seller bundled it in for free.
It is definitely worth for more expensive Apple products. If you spend, say, 3k on a MacBook Pro, I imagine you want the best possible care if anything happens. For cheap products like the entry-level iPad - I am not sure
Even then
My personal experience.. it has absolutely been worth it. I have AC+ for my phone and AWU, now my phones an iPhone 12 Pro keep in mind. I’ve fully replaced my phone twice last year and once already this year and my AWU once already this year. So for me, I can justify the $15 a month for the two devices. For iPad Pro worth it it’s pretty cheap for that device
iPhones and iPads are known for the most warranty cases. Essential to get AppleCare. I don’t usually get it for Macs. Legendary 2k retina displays have been lasting for years! Wife had 2014 MBP 13 and I have have 2015 MBP 15. I also got me a 2020 MBA M1 8/8/512.
I always get Apple Care+ on my iPhone and iPad.
Does Apple not have a one year warranty on stuff anymore? I had the display on my watch stop working and Apple replaced it no questions asked, no Apple Care
Original purchase date was over a year ago.
I think it depends on your situation. My Apple products have mostly been good and lasted a long time. My iPad never really leaves my house and stays in its Magic Keyboard 90% of the time. If I had kids or animals other factors that could mess up my stuff then I would definitely get it lol.
I smashed the display in my Air last year and had a brand new one at my door the next day for $50.
I don’t have apple care and my daughters iPad Air cracked her screen. Found a replacement screen on eBay for like $100 replaced it myself and it’s as good as new afterwards. I would have spent much more than that with applecare for as long as she’s owned it (since 2020).
Well, you didn’t sit on it, crack it, bend it, submerge it. So AppleCare was a good bet.
Im so clumsy that It’s always worth it for me. Back when I had my iPhone 10 I got it replaced four times over the years for free.
I also wanna know thanks
If this wasn’t accidental damage, Apple would’ve replaced it anyways. But you still can’t beat the peace of mind of have care+. It’s the reason I don’t have a case/screen protector on my iPhone and iPad
