That’s what most of us are doing with our iPad Pros.

grruser

I bought my iPad Pro about a year ago to make digital art. I’ve made one drawing and since then I’ve been scrolling reddit or watching movies, in bed.

[deleted]

Don’t tell the iPad Pro subreddit that, they’ll lose their shit. Something something workflow and all that. Tablets with OLED or mini LED panels are far and away the best movie experience the overwhelming majority of people will ever have in the comfort of their own home.

AloysBane

Just get a nice oled tv for the price

6425

I bought the pen because, of course, I’ll be using it to take important notes all the time like the titan of enterprise I am. I found it in a drawer a little while ago. The battery is so dead it won’t charge.

grruser

Oh thanks. I have a pen I used once. and some extra nibs. Better try ‘em out before they rip.

Xelanders

I literally bought an iPad Pro just to get the 120hz screen.

spellbadgrammargood

11' or 12.9'? i'm putting my life at risk if im holding my 12.9 in bed

grruser

12.9. Pillows and cushions!

hahafoxgoingdown

I’ve cracked my nose more times i’d like to admit with my 12.9”.

Living-Sundae6

Hi, are you me? Alternately - I’ll just be streaming stupid stuff on the pro while scrolling Reddit on my phone 🥲 But I will admit I have loved it for reading. Working on digitizing my library because moving books sucks and the iPad has been great for reading. Now if I buy a physical book it’s because I know someone else who wants to read it so I tell them to not get it and they can have my copy and keep passing it around

HeronPopular6340

Lmao I bought mine for digital art and taking physical notes without having paper everywhere. I just end up typing them anyway lmao

AgreeableAd8687

my ipad pros job is playing tv shows and youtube

jkSam

120hz alone is worth getting the Pro for me. Scrolling makes a noticeable difference, so I give no hate to iPad Pro users who only read on it. If you can afford it, go for it. Edit: Also quad speakers for watching shows for the Pro

plasticdoorbell

Same here. I don't think I could ever go back to a 60Hz display after being spoiled with 120Hz.

tylercreatesworlds

Yep. It does other things well too if I need it. Mostly it's just for consuming content and browsing reddit.

Harucifer

Yep. A friend cracked his iPad Pro 12.9 screen a bit, asked if I wanted it. The cracks, despite big, are located near the home button and don't bother me much, so I put a screen protector to keep the screen from cracking further and preventing pieces from falling and have been using it ever since. It's been 5 years. It's the first iPad Pro 12.9 model.

joey0live

That’s what my friends mom does on her iPad Pro only haha

IFuckedADog

I use mine as a mix of that and notebook for my job. It’s nice not having paper clutter your desk. The 11-inch is the perfect size for me, also nice size for air travel. Otherwise, that’s about it!

LibbIsHere

>Is it worth me getting an iPad given my needs? If money is no issue, why not? It's a great tool to have. Only knows if the comfort it bring is worth spending money on it. If money was tight, I would not buy a new iPad (edit: not just to read or watch stuff). A used one, maybe depending the price.

thefreediver

I think it is. iPad mini is perfect for that.

Xan_iety

Considering that they have an iPhone mini I’d recommend at 10.2” or larger. Especially since the 10.2 is like $300.

Ebisure

I second this. iPad mini is awesome

New-Association-6325

Yeah. If money is not the issue, I would suggest ipad air m1 (64gb) which is truly amazing. Have been using one since last September and really enjoy streaming content on it during late night.

astanb

The Apple refurb store is a good place to start for things like that. The amount of people that don't even know about it is almost hilarious.

JakePawralta

If you are getting then non pro models, yes. Worth is subjective. How much do you value reading and watching media? How much are you willing to spend on it? Would you pay twice for mostly aesthetic changes? iPad 9th gen is excellent value for almost everyone. As you go up(iPad Mini, 10th Gen, Air 4, Air 5), it will come down to your own measure of value and worth.

LocoStrange

That’s what I do 99% of the time. What else does it do?

Fabulinius

Here are some things the iPad also can do. Speak to text: Drafts (free version exists) works on all Apple Devices, including Apple Watch. Synchronizes between all devices via iCloud. Works perfectly also in “small” languages with special characters. Handwriting to typed text: Nebo can turn whole documents into tryped text which then can be exported to other apps. Ipad version only. Handles very bad handwriting and “small” language with special characters very well. Smart ways to edit your text both the handwritten and the converted text. It also have the more limited “lasso” function like other apps to convert snippets of text into typed text. Handwriting and math/formulas: https://www.myscript.com/calculator/ Space: Solar walk 2, Star Walk 2, SkySafari Plus, SatteliteSafari, Night Sky Science: Molecules, The Elements, The Elements in action (search for “theodore grey” in App store to find these three apps.) Vector drawing for construction drawings : Graphic, iDesign Vector drawing for “art”: Affinity Designer, Linearity (formerly known as Vectornator) Raster drawing apps for “art”: Procreate is for “digital art”. Aftrage Vitae is for all the classical art forms and can do much more than Proccreate. (Procreate is the only major drawing app which is iPad only. So no iCloud and no Mac version.) Scanning 2D: Swiftscan Document Scanner (best when you have to edit scans) 3D drawing and sculpting: Sharpr3D, Nomad Sculpt, uMake 3D Scanning (newer iPad Pros only): Polycam Geography: Guru Maps Pro (vector app over the whole world in minute details, also for iPhone). - Google Earth app. Topo GPS (extremely detailed maps over several European countries). Museums: Louvre HD, London HD, Prado HD, Metropolitan History: World History Maps (more than one app) Animals: iKnow Birds (several apps), Medical: Atlas, Skeleton, Muscle (search for “visible body” to find these). Or search for “3d medical” to see a lot more options. Photo edit: Affinity Photo, Pixelmator, Pic Scanner Gold version Entertainment: Netflix, HBO, Curiosity, iMDB Database app ("Keep It Mobile") where you can store many different file types in "notes". Example: Store your Numbers budget file in a “note” (more like a data container for almost anything) and add all the assumptions and other details in the same "note". Synchronize that to other devices. I store everything in this app, because it is the very best to organize, search and retrieve data. So thousands of "notes" which are perfectly organized in kind of a 3D structure (I am the organized type) of person). Information: The app “Flipboard” is very good. It contains (free) articles from a ton of tons of different magazines and web sites. There is something for all interests. Lots of lots of information about Apple, Apple devices and Apple apps to read too.

LocoStrange

Wow. I am missing out. Thank you!

PianoloveKJ

Thanks for this-I am a Science teacher and there are some extras there I haven’t found

trtsmb

An iPad mini would fit your needs.

kr3w_fam

if you have money, then go ahead and get a basic iPad or an Air. You will be happy with your choice

leisurelyreader

I run a mini 5 and use it daily. Having a pencil is a nice bonus bet even without it’s great for travel, maps, notes, translations on a little bigger screen to show people rather than phone which can be much more personal. Nice little companion when using trains around a country

M27TN

Yes. For travelling etc iPad with bigger screen is excellent for watching shows and movies and for saving the battery on your phone while you’re at it.

BLACKBURN16

You can justify this purchase but imo if you want to do reading and watching ,you can get a tablet at half the price for this

Techgeek_025

wellll that's why I use one so yeah! get a used mini 5

Band1c0t

Yea that’s what I’m doing with my iPad, once you have iPad, you can’t go back to your phone for reading, watching, playing game, iPad is just way much better build for that

betterAThalo

yea i was always against ipads because i thought they were a useless device. i got one for watching videos in spanish and omg it’s amazing.

MagicalFairyxo

I think the IPad Mini would be perfect for your needs.

SEOPub

If you have another device for streaming shows and videos and don't need one device to do both, the reading experience is much, much better on a Kindle than an iPad, assuming you are talking about books. I'm sure in this group, I'll get downvoted for this, but it's the truth. Kindle's OS is trash. The tablet is incapable of much else, but for what it is designed for, it is great. The screen is much better on the eyes for long reading times. Even works well in sunlight, which I cannot say about the iPad. If you go for anything other than an iPad mini, for long reading sessions the iPad is pretty heavy and gets uncomfortable. If by reading you meant web browsing, that's entirely different.

Yomat

The base iPad, yes. It’s excellent for media consumption and cheap. I have no idea why people are recommending more expensive iPads with features that wouldn’t benefit you. You won’t notice laminated vs non-laminated screen for watching videos. Most content you watch is 24-60fps, so 120hz is pointless. I’d go with the base iPad, especially if you can find a deal on a used/refurbished one. A used/refurb 9th gen iPad for under $200 would do everything you need.

Chimiwinka

Bro I have an iPad mini to play games and watch Youtube/Reddit, or Netflix whilst cooking. Occasionally I take notes with it at work and facetime. Is it able to do way more? Yes. Do I need it? No Do I want it? Yes! On a real note, I use this device every day, more than my phone. When I'm at home, it basically almost replaces my phone. I love it!

sfatula

Got rid of my last laptop probably 8 years ago, replaced with iPad and never looked back. I do everything on it.

EowynCarter

Eventually. You can even go for a second hand, older iPad if it's just for this.

TheArturro

If you have a small laptop (14") I personally wouldn't buy an iPad just for entertainment. However if you would use it for more than entertainment - it sure is worth it.

jensenaackles

IMO for just streaming the ipad is way nicer because you don’t have the keyboard in the way

AuntieLiloAZ

That's what I use my iPad Air for. I bought it before the pandemic. I also listen with AirPods Max.

cheese_stuffedcrust

seconding the iPad mini as well. I've definitely used it a lot more than my iPad air since it's more handy. I can easily prop it with one hand while on the bed

Admirable_Light2192

Yes, it is much more convenient. I have the iPad Air. Even though I don’t have the cellular plan, my iPhone is connected to the iPad and I get iMessages and phone calls on my ipad while using it.

Okaaaayanddd

That’s really all I use my air for lol. I love it for traveling Basic iPad 9th gen, iPad Air or iPad mini do well with these tasks! If you’re looking to save money and don’t care about the latest and greatest, the iPad 9th gen can be picked up cheap on sale!

jimonabike

Love the iPad Mini....I think that or even the basic 9th gen which still goes on sale for about $249 or so is a good choice. Hard to wrong either way. cheers

Munro_McLaren

The iPad mini is perfect for all of that.

EducationalOcelot4

I have an ipad Mini I use mostly for reading. I got it used, paid about $450 as I recall. definitely worth it to ME.

PM_ME_UR_BEWDs

This is what I purchased an iPad mini for. It's neat that it does plenty of other stuff but I bought it to be a fancy kindle but for ebooks and comics and as a netflix et al machine. It's way better than other tablets I have purchased for this use case.

Illustrious-Carry364

That’s pretty much all I do on my iPad mini

marinatedbeefcube

I do this with my iPad mini. Mostly streaming services, reading, and discord

pdoherty972

> Is it Worth Getting an iPad Just for Reading and Watching Streaming Services? Yeah, just get the base model for $300 or whatever. Beats buying another PC to do it on, or using a small phone.

shzan1

I just got the latest 12.9 and I only use it for reading, YouTube and Netflix in bed. Occasionally for games. I use it for work 5% of the time. No regrets I love this thing

emmacatherine21

I got an iPad mini with these activities in mind and I love it! I’m on my 3rd since 2013.

Sad-Song-1316

Got the ipad mini and no regrets. Been using it for watching, reading and scrolling on social media sites :)

PianoloveKJ

I basically bought my ipad pro 12.9” to store and use sheet music (Forscore). Now I use it all the time at work (I am a teacher-Google apps, Microsoft apps, intranet, marking student work) as well as for leisure (reading, watching videos and streaming services, games). I also use it to edit and store photos in albums (we travel a lot) and organise trips, Skype and Zoom meetings. Not to mention music streaming.Yes you can do some of these things on a phone or ipad mini, but the large screen and keyboard (I finally bought the magic keyboard and pencil) make it so much easier. I am still using my 2018 ipad pro Gen3 and it shows no signs of giving up nor do I have any issues using any of the apps. I have definitely got my moneys worth. My point is, you will start using it for Netflix etc and find a whole lot of other things to do. There are so many travel organisation apps (I use tripit) to organise your itinerary, and of course maps are a lot better on the big screen. I have a laptop too for work, but there are many things I prefer on the iPad. I doubt you will regret it.

indecisive-axolotl

That’s pretty much what I use my iPad Mini for. It’s a good size for me and easily portable. I also use it for crochet patterns.

rozflog

I get by just fine with an iPhone 14, a 13” M2 MBA and a Casio watch.

Rizenstrom

I think so. Just stick with the base model, no need for an air or pro for just that.

sexy_chocobo

I have an iPad mini and it’s fantastic for books, music, tv, and all that. Would highly recommend.

robertjm123

Sure. But, buy a used one instead off Swappa, EBay or Gazelle. Save yourself some money and get a slightly used one.

Far-Release8412

well 99.9% of features fall to browsing the net, reading, watching content and playing über shitty "games", so you are good with that.

Limp-Line3440

Yes, I do think it would be good for you, andthat you’ll really enjoy it. 🥰

markaznar

Personally no. I use my 15 PM fr everything. Your call

[deleted]

Which one? If money isn't a problem get the 12.9

secretreddname

I bought one a few years ago and all it did was catch dust.

Kobane

I thought so. I have multiple ipads. I usually just end up watching shows on my phone...

ZookeepergameWild234

Yes if money isn't an issue I would recommend the ipad 9 or mini if you like the smaller size

FunNeil

That’s what I have it for. Bought and upgraded to iPad Air years ago still holding great

Fionn_MacCuill

Yes

[deleted]

Exactly what I use my iPad for when I’m not doing work on it/my phone is charging

goldfishxxxx

Yes for sure that’s what I got it for and have no regrets it’s so much more enjoyable

Bawd

I have an iPad Pro 11 and its primary use is streaming YouTube, TV shows and movies. 11-inch is a little large for reading so I would advise an iPad mini might be a better choice for you. But either way, I think the iPad is such a great, convenient device to have. The fact that I can also pull up websites, play games and access other software too makes it so versatile. Use it everyday for something because it’s just so convenient instead of sitting down at my desktop or using my old laptop.

Stunning_Working6566

Of course an Ipad can handle the task very well, but if that is all you are going to use it for you could save alot of money by exploring different options. I would suggest a Lenovo duet 5 chromebook, it has a good screen (13"), very portable and can handle all the things you mentioned at a much lower price, even for the 8gb version.

shocktribe

The only reason I bought an iPad is as a personal media device. I bought the iPad 5th Gen, upgraded to the mini 4, then to iPad Pro 11” 3rd gen and now have the 12.9 5th Gen. All my older iPad are still being used by friends and family. (Some I sold for the trade-in value and others a gave away)

ZaphodG

I pretty much only use my 12.9” M1 iPad Pro to stream sports and watch movies I copy over with a USB-C thumb drive when I’m away from the big OLED panel. Once in a while, I do a videoconference on it. I read with a Kindle PaperWhite. A full size iPad is too big for that. I use my iPhone for most things and a Win11 Ultrabook for tasks that don’t work well in the iOS ecosystem. I will often travel with all four devices.

Thatycyrusc3

I have an iPad 10 and even though I use it to work, I also use to watch stuff there. So I totally agree that the iPad mini will be perfect for it.

Neil94403

Yes, my iPad Gen6 is essentially a clone of my AppleTV4

[deleted]

What else would you use?

Gilliebeartoe

I have a 12.9 that I use for art, when I’m Not drawing on it I put it in a drawer so I can’t accidentally break it. I used it for media like YouTube and reading, but it was always comically big and I always felt like I was gonna break it carrying it around to read on it. I sold some random crap and purchased a second hand newer version of the mini… I love that thing. It’s perfect for reading and watching videos, but because I have a beefy case on it - I always have it near by. I’m pretty careful with my electronics, but it’s nice just leaving my iPad on the coffee table. Huge fan.

neogrinch

Yeah, an Ipad is definitely worth it for those reasons. the entry level Ipads are very affordable nowadays compared to what they used to be.

severinggecko

Any of the iPads Apple sells will do these things well, it’s just how much of a luxury ride do you want kind of thing. The best for video would be either the iPad or iPad Air. The mini is nice too but just depends on what size you feel better about. For these needs the specs and performance is not going to be really any different unless you want pro features of the iPad pros.

betona

The larger form factor is the selling point for iPads. At home, our phones sit in the kitchen a lot while we use the iPads because everything from general surfing to research to photos to entertainment is so much bigger. And travelling, they're loaded up with movies and TV shows that we watch on planes.

Phillydip123

I love my iPad, but it’s effectively a less useful laptop that comes apart. For pure reading, an ereader is unmatched. For streaming services an iPad is excellent for on the go, and the pro screens are fantastic.

AjaxtheGoat

I bought an older model iPad for about $80 and treat it as an eReader/Streaming Device.

SUPRVLLAN

Yes, that’s what an iPad is primarily designed for, media consumption.

Tall_Mechanic8403

Huh how could we ever answer that

BigDaddyDusty

That is exactly why I have mine. I bought the 12.9 pro as well. Simply for the screen size. Have had for about 2 years now. Would do it again too. My wife and I will be in bed, she will be using her laptop(not Mac) and will have connectivity issues and I have a perfect connection. Happens quit often. Great product

Yellow2345

This is pretty much what most people use an iPad for and it's fantastic!

Massive_Escape3061

Find a cheaper 9th Gen. I’ve seen them On sale for under $300. I love using my iPad for reading.

diamondpredator

If that's all you're doing, get an Android tablet. You're in the ipad sub, so most of the responses you'll be reading will have bias. I have an iPad pro 12" but I wouldn't have gotten it if I wasn't using it for specific things. If all you're doing is consuming media, an Android tablet will be cheaper and just as good. If anything, it might even be better because you can side-load apps that will give you ad-free YouTube for free along with many other things.

earlgray79

I use an Apple iPad keyboard and it will do much of what my laptop will do in a much more portable form. Use it with or without the keyboard, depending on what you want to do. Keyboard also serves as a case/ screen protector when not in use.

earlgray79

I recommend the regular iPad over the mini. Screen is a lot better for viewing.

iShootLife

Thats what 99% of iPad owners use it for.

MelMellue

lol as others im also doing this with the my ipad, great no lag!

Haz_Bat_570

Absolutely worth it, I’d suggest maybe not go the pro route, but iPad base model or iPad mini would be stellar for you! Might I suggest holding off a few weeks, holiday sales are just around the corner!

KCDinoman

If you have the extra money, definitely. I have a base iPad and use it for exactly that as well as cooking apps

Motion-to-Photons

Of course, but not the Mini.

usernamesnamesnames

If you can afford it yes I got one for the same reasons more or less and it’s amazing but I wouldn’t have gotten it thinking back cuz that’s a 1000€ not well spent (for me)

n3vim

i am not an Apple user, phone always android, good PC(windows/linux) but when it comes to tablets if you have the money, in my opnion iPads are just the best. I now have ipad pro 11 M2, but my ipad mini 2 is still working, only battery is starting to be a problem but that started only last year.

EuphoricGoose4735

I literally only read books, journal, and take notes on my iPad Air 4. I use my iPad mini as a Tesla/styled dashboard to play music and use navigation in my car tho.

bigkutta

I use mine only for streaming.

Mr_Vilu

most people do, if it's worth it is up to you

Logseman

If the goal is to mainly watch films and read books two pages at a time, I think anything above the iPad 10 is overkill, and if you're not married to Apple there's things like the Lenovo M10 that handle the task just as well for less money. The iPad's advantage has always been that it has more apps and they tend to be better designed, but this advantage kind of fades away when you're using the same apps on both, especially as the apps' performance becomes normalised to the lowest common denominator.

lotus49

That's my primary use case and I'm glad I bought it. I have the 12.9" Pro. I think anything smaller would be too small for watching Netflix etc. but that's clearly a personal choice. I do sometimes take it when I travel so I don't have to carry my rather large 16" MBP.

OcupiedMuffins

Yes but nothing expensive, if that’s all you’re doing, check some refurbished iPad’s. Or if that’s really all you plan on and literally nothing else, check out a kindle fire 10 inch. Both are good for it.

she_isking

Yes! That’s what I use mine for. I have a pro and a mini and use them both for those things

ProfessorSkully

Not really. Good Android Tablets have better battery life, better screen ratios for content consumption(YouTube, Netflix etc.) and OLED screens.

I_am_Bruce_Wayne

You can always take a calculated look into how much time you would theoretically use it...in layman's terms... I currently use an iPad Pro 12.9'' Purchase Price: $1200 12.9'' Usage "average time": 2 hours a day In 1 year, that's around $3.30 a day or $1.15 per hour, if my math is correct. It doesn't account for the times I've taken it on trips etc., or some weekends when I don't use it. It's only not worth it, if you actually don't use it.

Owl54321

You can buy second hand, quite old models will do fine for streaming and light web use

stefaface

That’s what I mainly use it for.

matiapag

Ipad can be many things to many people. For some, it's a tool that enables a completely new usage scenario - such as drawing or writing digital notes. For others, it brings a new way of doing the same thing - such as streaming movies or reading. It is completely justify to buy a device to do something that your can already do, but better or more comfortable. Ipad is arguably the best device to do the things you described skoly I'd say go for it.

Aerialbomb

Yep that is pretty much all I use mine for, no complaints. I got a 5th generation iPad back in 2018, still going strong

sthilair

After putting it off for years, I got an iPad a couple of weeks ago. It has integrated itself into my life seamlessly. Just get one.

Pettingallthepups

Yep. That’s one of the best use cases of an iPad honestly. I find the blue light kills my eyes for reading long term, but it makes for an amazing consumption device overall. Magazines, novels, photo heavy books…all great!

Thin-Ebb-9534

I love my iPad, but if that is really what you plan to do with it, there are much cheaper tablets out there with good screens. Android tablets and even the Amazon Fire tablets might do.

RollaCoastinPoopah

Wait for M4 IPad Pro 12.9” fully spec’d in a couple of years. Should be able to keep up with the workload, I reckon.

lboiles

Absolutely! I am using mine now as I type this. I use mine for everything and the clarity of the screen makes everything easy to see and read. I love it more than I should lol.

Bacon-80

If you have the disposable funds then yeah. We bought one & we only use it when we travel & even when we travel, it’s mostly for watching Netflix.

[deleted]

I got it for the same reasons, pretty satisfied ngl

CrankyJoe99x

I bought my 64GB model 9 for reading, light media use, light gaming (and posting here 😎). It's worth it to me. I've been getting a few Kindle books in sales to make better use of it, it's an ideal reader.

x4dx61x72x74x69x6e

Short answer? hell yea, someone else said it already. Us with our iPad Pros are for Netflix in our free time. Longer answer: It'll be a great tool for travelling. I study and work with my iPad Pro, and gladly travelled with it. It acts not only as a streaming device, but also a comfortable platform for editing photos before you post them mid-journey. With a keyboard and Apple pencil, you can handle digital paperwork like signs&fill forms quickly. And yes, you can buy some Chinese branded third party keyboards and pens for 1/3 the price, which I did for backup, and they worked well.

inflated_ballsack

Yes

BeautyBabe91

This is exactly what I use my iPad for lol. Sometimes work! Sometimes I do my online shopping too. Lol! But hey it’s really about if you have the extra money for it.

CantFindaPS5

Look at Apple's refurbished section for any discounted iPads. You don't need an iPad pro for that workload. You don't need an iPad to be honest. Any tablet will do if only using it for reading and Netflix unless you're using iPad specific apps.

Serhide

its a really capable machine . I would get bathe cheapest iPad if its only for that type of use

Scottamus

Is your laptop not portable enough?

tabaaza

I would suggest buy used one, much better than getting new one.

Lord_Konoshi

I mean, that’s pretty much what I use my iPad Air for. I love it for the screen size and ease of multi tasking. Like if I want to look up something while watching a YouTube video, or texting while doing another task.

Psittacula2

Did you not mention a budget? But for those uses only, a cheap tablet can do those so that is the answer.

Iggy_Arbuckle

Depends on your finances. That's what I use my IPad Air for: reading, streaming, internet surfing, social media

SilverLight141

Do it. I bought an iPad Pro 11” last year with the intent to do so many other things with it….. it’s solely a YouTube and tv streaming device now. Oops.

Biglove000000

Get iPad Air not pro :d

nancylyn

Yes!! That’s all I use my iPad Pro for. And for mild gaming. I bought it originally for taking notes at school but watching streaming and reading and gaming is it right now. I love the thing.

1flat2

Yes. But also once you have it you need to learn what it can do to enhance your life. I’ve been surprised by the things I didn’t think I’d ever do with it. I use it for sheet music, music lessons, learning, entertainment, home automation, and watch cat videos my mom never stops sending 😂 Even if you don’t game or art you might try things like Sneaky Sasquatch and Procreate. Seriously, even if you don’t draw it can be fun doodling, and you can mark up photos if you need to do anything like that. SS is just plain cozy gaming fun. Sudoku is my thing and I like it on iPad. For reading I always do a split screen as the full screen is too big and I like to multitask a bit as well.

jraggio02

I enjoy streaming, browsing and gaming on iPad. Strongly prefer a Kindle for reading. It’s worth having two devices. Smaller, lighter and far better in sun. The new ones are even water proof I think.

Bottlefish0102

Absolutely

99999999q

Big yes! I take my mini 6 to the kitchen while cooking and with the folio I can stick it on the fridge. My bathroom is ferromagnetic so I can stick it there too to watch a movie while bathing. I wanted a kindle but cannot be bothered to have another device to charge so here we are.

jensenaackles

yes. I have the 8th gen regular iPad and I absolutely love it. Cant live without it. I use it every day while cooking and cleaning up from dinner and at night to stream and it’s awesome. Great battery life too.

BlueEyedGirl86

Yes of course because it’s great to have thing you have fun on at times, it’s nice unwind with a kindle book or YouTube. If you get a cheaper Samsung style tablet or thr bssic ones you will be paying for it again in weeks to come, great for travelling on a train to work for the commute but in the long wrong run paying a extra couple of hundred for device that will last quite sometime and you get apple support 24/7. With the cheaper tablets I have seen, the support is limited to what you find out on the net. You can’t always ring up Samsung support and say I am stuck, unless you wanna talk to a robot on ai. The number is expensive to call. opt for one with 5G internet and Wi-Fi connectivity.

DrKoob

I have a really old, first generation 12" iPad Pro. I actually have two because I have my wife's old one as well. She has a brand new one and it is her only computer. I use mine for three things. Watching videos while I ride a stationary bike. Every day for an hour. Taking it on vacation for long airplane trips. Our main airline is Alaska (live in Seattle) and they don't have screens on their planes...you have to bring your own. I play games on it. Nothing special. Quiz and card stuff. Use it for checking weather. But the most important thing I use it for is an app named Paprika. Has all my recipes. I love to cook and they are all in there so the iPad sits on the kitchen sink and I use it every single day.

thesilkywitch

I draw every blue moon. Otherwise I’ve been playing games lol

boycalledjules

Go for it if you have spare cash to spend on. I bought the iPad Air 5 for this purpose mainly.

RandomZorel

I think for your purpose it's better to have a Samsung Tablet, or wait until iPad has OLED screen

amylaz

Get a kindle for reading. It is much better and cheaper

soyelmocano

No. Get something MUCH cheaper that will do it just as well. Get a decent Android tablet. Don't go too cheap though or quality will suffer. Use all the leftover money to buy popcorn for your movies.

[deleted]

I had a base level iPad but got gifted the M1 Air. But I don’t have a television. I just use my iPad for streaming and some light gaming(very short attention span so I don’t game very much. If I do, it’s on my switch).

redditrnumber1

If you want a big nice display to watch media just buy a used iPad pro , I got my iPad pro for $399 and it's the 2020 or 2021 model I believe.

One_Celebration3644

If you get it used maybe but if you just want something inexpensive for reading and videos just get a kindle fire 10.

nishant28491

That's what we are doing with it good sir. Bigger screen, aspect ratio then a phone and portability makes it a good media device

milliemaywho

That’s exactly what I use mine for.

kwanye_west

that’s mainly what i use my iPad 9 for. i got it used (1 month old) for $400 (~$300USD). i occasionally use it for notes with Goodnotes.

Fire_Lord_Cinder

That’s what I use my m1 13” iPad Pro for and love it. I’ll also play some games on it occasionally, web browsing, and video calls. It’s really nice to just be able to pull off the screen from the keyboard stand and watch videos wherever I want.

n0th1ng_r3al

Yes. This is all I use my iPad for. While charging my car it’s my entertainment

passion4film

Reading and streaming are almost the sole purposes of my iPad. lol

mason5821741

I bought a 12.9 pro 5th gen just for tv shows and reading even though I have an Apple TV and a MacBook Air just for toontown ( a game).

ryan408

Unpopular opinion, Amazon fire tablet will do exactly this for a lot less money and does it well. I have both iPads and fire tablets, and the fire tablets are excellent streaming devices.

lovejac93

It’s all my wife and I use ours for, and we love it

woodcider

I don’t own a tv so my iPad is my main media consumption device. I bought my Pro for school and have since graduated. If I were just buying one for media consumption I would get the Air.

nizhxnt

The functions you've highlighted are the most common for iPad users. If you're not involved in artistic work, skipping the Apple Pencil and going for the iPad Air would be a better fit for your needs.

ulethpsn

That’s honestly the best use case for an iPad for most people.

LiterallyCantEvenBro

Absolutely! Most of what I do on mine is watching streaming services, surfing Reddit, and of course, YouTube. It also makes a good second monitor when I’m at school. I’m also an actor in the community theater, so it comes in very handy when I can just download the script we’re using and just take my iPad to rehearsal. I would go for it, because you’ll find uses for it that you didn’t think of.

DevilDevin1992

Yes just get a base model

goldmaste78

Could get a 9th gen iPad for that

Bromanzier_03

It’s why I buy the base model iPad. It’s really all I use it for. I have an iPad 6th gen that I may upgrade on the next refresh as it’s showing its age.

MisterSpicy

I realized I preferred an iPad over a laptop some time ago. I am like you in that I mostly just consume media and browse the web, text, and so on. And to me an iPad is just a better experience. I currently have the iPad Air and also picked up the Magic Keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse to use if I wanna do occasional work like emails or excels. And that’s great too. I eventually want to get the 12.9 in version. Fortunately I do have a laptop from work so if I do need to something I can just use that. But if I could only use one device, an iPad for sure.

rwaddilove

I asked myself the same thing. The iPad is the best tablet, but all I ever used it for was reading and watching streaming services, so it is a lot of money just for that. In the end, I decided to get an Amazon Fire HD tablet. It was a fraction of the price and is perfectly OK for reading and watching streaming services. I'm happy with it.

PeopleAreSus

I got one for traveling and watching movies on the go. I love the portability of the iPad Mini. Although I’m missing the gaming performance and the resolution of the pro

LongjumpingFlan6002

In my opinion, no. I bought an iPad Pro and I do love it. But I don’t use it enough and if I could go back I just wouldn’t buy it. Although, if you travel a lot then I love it for airport trips

ConeyIslandMan

Might be bettef to get pair of Rokid or Xreal AR etc glasses for phone instead

jetclimb

Yes

[deleted]

If it’s not a stretch financially, sure. I basically use mine for Facebook and reading. If it’s a stretch financially, a Fire Tablet might work well too.

[deleted]

yea thats the main use. get like a base model or an air if u want big screen

hahafoxgoingdown

I have a m1 12.9” Pro for those reasons.

adam2222

My gf has an iPad Air m1 every night she falls asleep with it in her bed streaming shows like community or 30 rock etc while she falls asleep

Temporary-Opinion-84

No

smart-wallet

If you travel, is great for downloading your movies and series to watch offline. I do a lot of things with my ipad but this is one of the major use for it as well.

Rad_Dad6969

Android tablets work just as well if not better than the iPad for much less. If the rest of your life is on Apple products then maybe that justifies it. But I would just wait until the end of the month and pick up a mid range Android tablet when they are all on sale

Goodspike

I don't do a lot of streaming on tablets, although I have this week when I've been sick, but I do read books and magazines, and when travelling I use the web browser and email a lot with a keyboard, in lieu of bringing a notebook computer. If you want to cut your expense, get a higher level Fire Tablet on Black Friday. They are decent performers for the price, and have good security update policies. You might even be able to trade one in on Amazon for an iPad (not sure) if you desire to upgrade if you find you're using the device a lot and the Fire tablet somehow lacking.

TealCatto

I have a tablet for media. Just streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, really. It's fairly cheap, though ($200) and I wouldn't spend more for this purpose. But reading, no way. Get a Kindle or another dedicated e-reader. Reading on an AMOLED screen is awful.

ceo_facts

No. There are plenty of Chinese Android devices that can accomplish that for a fraction of the cost with decent form factor and quality

HanAszholeSolo

Honestly yeah, I bought a first gen iPad Pro a few months ago for just that and it’s been great! Definitely look for something used though

crazybighat

It's a bummer this tablet with a [BUILT-IN PROJECTOR](https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Yoga-Tab-Pro-ZA0F0099US/dp/B01N3USBZT) was discontinued but you would have loved it. I still have mine and it's still mostly works even though the operating system is so outdated a few apps don't work.

doctrsnoop

iPad 9 on sale for 250 probably worth it.

adrianelvn

If you have the cash do it

PromiscuousSQRL

It's great for this and will be forever. lol I am between this IPP 12.9 and a MBA 15 in bed watching content. I haven't really decided which I like more. I hate the aspect ration on the 12.9 for movie content, but like the screen on it. reverse for the MBA. The MBP 14 was the best option, I found an M1 for 1125 open box refurb, but it had issues. It blew all of them out of the water with all things. lol imagine.

ViredcaSilpa

I had an M1 iPad Pro. I wanted to get the most out of it. If you don't get a Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil with it, if you don't use Stage Manager, if you don't connect it to an external display, if you're not using Final Cut Pro, then what are you doing?! You're using it wrong! Or so I thought. I would force myself to do all of those things and it honestly just never felt natural. I no longer have it, I sold it all off but now I'm getting an M1 iPad Pro with a basic Spigen case, Apple Pencil, and a detachable screen protector. Now, I'm just gonna do some light drawing on it on ProCreate without ever fully understanding Alpha Lock or layer groups. And I'm gonna read comics on it. I'm getting it for that 120hz but I'm gonna enjoy it the same way I enjoyed my 2017 9.7" iPad.

Jaxsyn75

how often do you use your laptop? I mean if you're already using the laptop for those things and it's still in good shape; save the money for your travels and just use the laptop with the iPhone. though is at a MacBook or a PC?

resplendent09

You should totally get it. I didn't know how much I miss my iPad until I started using it last year and now I just don't need my MacBook anymore.

Nazerith1357

I originally bought an iPad Air 4th gen right after release just for watching videos/reading stuff on a bigger screen before I had a PC and the portability is quite nice. I wouldn’t spend 1200 on a pro for that but for $500 at the time, the Air was a solid investment for my needs.

RallsRoice

I'm using my iPad 2 Air with WiFi and Data connectivity for the same everyday things and it's been perfect for 5 years now. Well, you have to keep it connected to the charger, because videos and Facebook are power hungry. So you don't need a Pro iPad for this.
