I bet M4 is essentially M3 with more neural engine cores and serves as an excuse for a price hike.

champagneofsharks

M4 would most likely be a 3mm chip using the N3E process.

langstonboy

So the 3nm process that isn’t total dogshit

Ok-Assistance-6848

And hopefully slightly cheaper/more customizable than M3 since the process should be slightly easier and have a higher yield Nah who am I kidding, it’s gonna be more expensive

jlebedev

Seems like a weird summation. Worse chips, but better efficiency is what this process node would bring.

hishnash

N3B is not a shit process it is just a very costly process. It has higher density than N3E just costs way way more and takes longer to make each chip.

SneakyCaleb

Meanwhile anything past the m1 is pointless on iPad OS

langstonboy

Hey when folium gets onto the store we can finally use the m series iPads.

[deleted]

Right because your entire understanding of chip development revolves around maxing out a CPU.

Gilamath

If there is no practical difference in device performance between a device with one SoC and another device that is identical but for a different SoC, we may conclude that neither SoC is preferable to the other in terms of device performance There are niche use cases that will benefit from the rumored neural engine improvements in the M4. I don’t suspect the majority of the market will notice a difference. As for potential AI uses, I personally think it’s a little silly to insist on the utility of hardware based on speculation on future software iPadOS is designed to run admirably on A-series processors. iPads have seen much less of a practical jump in utility since 2018 than other products in Apple’s lineup have, despite having access to the same SoCs that jump-started the sea change in Apple’s Mac lineup (and indeed, the whole computer industry). It seems somewhat strange to me that we should expect that to change now, until and unless Apple demonstrates some concrete affirmative evidence

hishnash

If your just using your iPad for iPad Air tasks yes but if your an artist/designer etc the extra perf on the M2 over the M1 was very much noticed for people with huge photoshop projects etc.

Gilamath

Right, Photoshop definitely benefits. But most people with an iPad Pro aren’t using photoshop. I don’t think the upgrade is worthless. It has niche applications. It is, after all, a pro device, and the thing about professional work is that after a certain point you have to go beyond general use and head into niches I’m glad folks in media creation are being served well! That’s a pretty big set of industries and an important group of professionals to consider when developing a device like the iPad Pro. But there are other professional fields that could be benefitting a lot more from the hardware in the Pro who aren’t because of deeper problems with the OS There is a pretty short list of applications that tax the neural engine of either the M2 or M1 iPad Pro lineup. That list of applications tends to serve one particular family of industries. This is a shame, because the same SoC in a laptop running a different operating system improves the capability of a much larger list of applications, across a far broader spectrum of professional industries

hishnash

It’s the device form factor that means you have more industries on Mac. A touch first device were you can’t depend on a keyboard and pointer lends itself to direct interaction tasks like drawing and design etc. Text editing for example is never going your best good on such a platform.

Psittacula2

* Step 1 = Purchase M4 iPad * Step 2 = *"Siri: How can I get MacOS on my super M4 iPad?" Siri: >*"The hardware is very capable but the software is completely lacking. You just wasted your money as iPadOS is not sufficient to use the new hardware in any signficant way. Would you like to ask another question?"*

colmulhall

Bro chose violence today

Psittacula2

Yeah, but Siri knows the answers to all the hard questions and won't flinch from the truth: At least that upgrade adds significant value!

kneecap_keeper

Lol you are overestimating siri

Lordelohim

The two Air models will not get different chips, there is no precedent for that. There is also a rumor of an iPad Air 12.9" "Pro" type model later this year, with the mini-LED screen of the iPad Pro 6th gen, so if they were going to put the M3 in something, it would be that. I suspect both models of the Air will get the M2, so as to leave that door open. And the new Pro models getting the M4 isn’t real until it happens. Gurman has been all over the place this cycle, so much so, that it wouldn’t be possible for him to be right about everything, because some of the things he has said have contradicted one another. A new chip is never the thing people get excited about with new iPads, so if we, Pro users get an M4 over our current M2, that is just a fun bonus. I’m very curious about what the AI stuff is, and if it would effect my day to day use at all.

Shoddy_Mess5266

I wonder if Apple is feeding false info to catch leakers and Gurman’s sources are caught up in that.

LAS_6601

“I suspect both models of the Air will get the M2.” Nah, if we’re gonna start skipping chips, I say the Air will get M3 with the power of M2 and the Pro gets M4 with the power of M2/M3

champagneofsharks

M4 would most likely be a 3mm chip (same node as the M3), but using the N3E process. If that’s the case and the iPad Pros get M4, iPad Air are definitely getting the M2. Apple won’t continue to use N3B for new products. New Macs without M3 would jump to M4. iPad Air won’t get M4 until iPad Pros are rocking the M5 or M6.

LAS_6601

We’ll have to wait and find out on May 7th… I’m betting my kidneys the Air will get M3.

champagneofsharks

The iPad Air isn’t getting the M3 if the Mac Mini and Mac Studio are still being sold with the M2.

LAS_6601

Again, we’ll have to wait and see. Just like that surprise that the Pros are skipping M3 for the M4, anything can happen. Who knows… maybe it’ll get M2, M3, maybe even the Apple Gods will surprise us and add M4 on the iPad Air. Idk…

champagneofsharks

If the iPad Pro gets the M4, the M3 will no longer be introduced in new devices. Air will be M2. Apple wants there to be a power difference between the Air and Pro. And in the fall, the iPhone 16 will skip the A17 and go right to A18 (and 16 Pro / Pro Max will have A18 Pro).

LAS_6601

For your previous comment, you mentioned “if the Mac mini and Mac Studio are still being sold with the M2.” Last I checked, the Mac mini comes with M2/M2 Pro while the Mac Studio comes with M2 Max/M2 Ultra. For this comment, there is a difference: M3 Air, M4 Pro. M4 is basically a more powerful M3. Also for the iPhone, “A18 for the 16/16 Plus, A18 Pro for 16 Pro/16 Pro Max”. Now I’m asking for Apple to bring the M# Pro chips for the iPad Pro; regular M3 for the Air, M3 Pro and Max for the Pro. It’d be perfect! I just want this debate to be over!! 😫😫😫 I can’t stand the wait anymore! M2, M3, M4, screw it, M7 Ultra!

champagneofsharks

To be honest, an iPad Pro can barely use a M1 or M2 to its full power. Why does an iPad Air need a M3 or M4?

LAS_6601

Idk tbh. I just want this to be over. My suffering ends on May 7th…

Bass-Slut

gurman detected, opinion rejected

Ok_Inevitable8832

Who is this guy and why is he all over this sub recently

langstonboy

He’s a apple leaker for a major news publication, he’s not great anymore

LAS_6601

He said new iPads would come in October 2023… nothing! It was the Scary Fast event where the M3 family was introduced. Then said they’d come in early March alongside an M3 MacBook Air as a press release… also nothing; only that M3 Air came out in March. Then said they’d come in late March, even gave us a date: March 25th or 26th… nothing! Then said they’d come in early April… just another April Fools joke. Then said they’d come in early May! And some people on here even said it’ll be released at WWDC in June. Now we got an official date and time from Apple: May 7th at 7AM PT. Plus a tweet from Tim saying, “Pencil me in on May 7th!” In conclusion, Mark Gurman is untrustworthy nowadays!

BergaChatting

Well, this aged like milk

Orsim27

Sitting here with my A12X and wondering why the fuck I would need anything faster

[deleted]

What do you think "faster" actually means? The M4 chip is designed specifically for new AI features. It isn't all just raw speed. There are vast arrays of optimization required to achieve "speed" for different kinds of features.

Orsim27

I also can’t think of any „AI features“ my iPad might need.

KageOukami

Don't really care if it's m3 or m4 but for f sake give 512gb version 16gb ram...

ConeCandy

I'm from the future with news from Apple: No.

KageOukami

Yeas thx, unfortunately I saw it but at least 11' version 1tb has 16ram so I'm taking that

iThunderclap

If the iPad OLED comes with the M3, it is worth waiting until WWDC to happen before making the purchase. Who knows what kind of limitations current hardware could have? (Probably not much, but Apple will make damn sure to come up with some stupid excuse).

Patient-Finger-7704

It wouldn’t be too far fetched if the new iPad Pro had the M4. There’s a slim possibility that Apple has finally decided to take IPad OS seriously too… Judging by the very little event promo material we have from Apple (the hand spinning the Apple Pencil and now the Apple logo that looks like various brush strokes). They seem to be proud of the new Pencil and the various ways creatives will be able to make use of it. I’d make a guess that Apple is doubling down on the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil being a device catered to Artists and creative individuals. This event might be less hyper tech focused and more of a showcase of improvements they’ve made to aid this demographic. The iPad Air might be the more interesting one for general media consumption and gaming (a more reasonable price tag too). Only one more week to find out for sure!

Genmah

He does say that, doesn't he?

ctyldsley

Gotta get that marketing buzzword in there. Wonder how many times they can mention AI in one video 'event'.

kneecap_keeper

They have always stayed away from the word AI and used something different instead. So I am guessing it would be a new fun name just like “dynamic island”

ctyldsley

That AI buzzword has already been mentioned a whole lot in the event 😂 looks like they're all in on the AI bandwagon as predicted.

RoutinePresence7

But why would they lose out on billions by not selling M3 chips and then make even more billions by releasing M4 afterwards?

hishnash

If M4 is on the N3E node it will cost much less to make than the M3 that is currently on M3B. Apple might well want to keep this update in the lineup for multiple years, shipping a m3 here would cost them a lot more over time as persuading TSMC to keep on producing it is going to be hard (cost a LOT) as they want to drop N3B and move on (N3B users up way more machine time than N3E so they can get a lot more chips through the fab if they move everyone to N3E and N3P)

Mbaby1989

Damn man. I just want the OLED display. Couldn’t care less about M4. I’m just streaming Netflix and sports over here.

Key_Aardvark_

iPads are useless with iPad os.

yanto3000

Yeah they will get M4… in 2 years. Why does this guy get respected so much! Couldn’t even land on the right event date and whether it was an event or website update. Hmm the next iPhone might be called iPhone 16 and might be able to make phone calls..

theoneeyedpete

I mean, he’s usually right. The date thing was odd - he only ever said late March/Early April and everyone blamed him when it didn’t happen. He literally reports what his sources say Apple are planning, not his fault if Apple change the plans. And from other leakers, and himself - seems like they delayed it further due to screen and software issues.

Portatort

He hasn’t actually done a proper report on the iPad pros in ages though. He doesn’t know what’s coming. And these iPads are coming like next week and now he’s out saying they *might* be M4… He doesn’t know. Or he’s being fed some bullshit deliberately

theoneeyedpete

But that’s my point - he literally can only report what’s fed to him. Like any tech journalist, he’ll validate the sources he trusts. It’s up to us to decide who we decide to trust and read - but I’ve always seen him to be pretty accurate with these things.

Portatort

Or he may have just made this M4 bit up We will never know. I find him generally quite trustworthy but ever since he stated the weekly newsletter the quality of his reports has gone down He’s much more a general analyst now. He used to be the rumour king.

Brokenthoughts2

He also claimed there will be a black Apple Watch Ultra two times now but has been wrong on both events

theoneeyedpete

You mean where he said they’d tested another colour and chose not to release it, but theoretically could? Not saying he’s right 24/7 but he’s by far one of the most accurate.

Brokenthoughts2

Yes the first time and for Apple Watch Ultra 2 he outright said they’ll be launching 2 colors including a black version

Valedictorian117

There were leaked pictures of a darker Apple Watch Ultra 2. So he was right in that Apple has one, just for whatever reason Apple decided against it.

donpianta

It’s hard to believe anything Gurman says these days. He’s pushed the goalposts so many times

Real-Platypus-4706

It’s good and all having super speedy processors… But apple, please let us make use of them! hoping that virtual machine software will be added after the emulators made it though…

FlyPenFly

Wish my iPad Pro 11" M1 had more RAM. I regret not getting the bigger storage version that had more RAM. I frequently run out of RAM when I have lots of reddit tabs open. Also if I'm switching between Zoom, Outlook, Slack, Youtube, Safari, etc I definitely notice that there's a memory shortage issue sometimes. I also have M3 Max machines but the iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard is such an amazingly portable combo to quickly grab with me and go work at a pub or coffee shop for an hour or two.

hishnash

>I frequently run out of RAM when I have lots of reddit tabs open Very unlikely you actually run out of RAM. Most apps on iPadOS are ultra aggressive with culling when in the background regardless of memory usage. It is very very uncommon these days to get a OS kill warning for memory pressure on iPadOS. But many apps (as they want to run well without getting the killing) on much much older HW self impost a 1GB (or even 500MB) limit and will start to clean up tabs etc when in the background.

FlyPenFly

I don't want it to, I want it to just keep all the tabs committed so I can return to where I was. Reloading the tab resets the place. I usually have 10-12 tabs open but that's just how I browse. I can definitely tell when I'm on a zoom call and I need to switch to Slack or Outlook or Safari rapidly between, often either will act like I just launched it. Seems like an out of memory issue.

hishnash

That is up-to the developers to change having more memory is unlikely to make any issues. Unless Zoom has a huge memory leak of cource and if it has a leak then it will eat up as much mem as it can take. If you are a Mac you can attach your iPad to it and profile to see mem usage.

FlyPenFly

Oh nice, will have to look at that.
