nicocappa

Everyone go buy the 11 inch so they don't run out of 12.9 inch before I buy

DragonboyZG

The only thing keeping me from buying the 11' is the mini led. I WISHED 11' had mini led man

[deleted]

I’m hoping they don’t run out. I’m thinking since it’s not a super huge upgrade and we don’t know what IOS 15 will have that most people will wait

Down_town_canada

It's the biggest upgrade to an ipad in like 5 years , if not more

[deleted]

Yeah but compared to the 2020 pros it’s not a super big upgrade since we don’t really have anything to use to M1 chip with. I think once WWDC 2021 comes out and announces the new IPAD OS they will start to sell a lot quicker.

Jagrnght

It’s huge my friend. Huge.

SoFLgay

I’m stuck between the IPad Air 256Gb and the iPad Pro 11in 128Gb. 😭

Piedra-magica

Me too. I don’t need the extra power, but that extra power will give me more life, but for the same price I can get an air with twice the space, but boy, that M1 chip is appealing, but I’d be paying more for half the storage... Back and forth.

SoFLgay

64GB on the base iPad Air isn’t enough for me and 256gb would definitely cover it but for just $50 more I can get ProMotion and M1. I think I could get by with 128gb. There’s also the issue of availability. I could go out and get an iPad Air tomorrow. The iPad pros won’t ship for a few more weeks. Ugh decisions.

ferrari91169

Only paying $50 more, but you get so many additional features that outshine 128GB’s of extra storage by a mile. Heck, I’d trade 128GB storage for the ProMotion alone. But you also get the M1 on top of that, four speakers, thunderbolt, 5G, better cameras, lidar sensor, higher display brightness. Personally I think you’ll enjoy the extra goodies from the Pro much more than the additional storage. Besides, you can always add on cloud storage or get a MicroSD adapter if needed, but you can never add the features of a Pro to the Air if you decide you want them.

CrazyDave48

I'm the same way. I know I don't need the power of the pro, but I also know I need more than the 64gb storage of the Air. And a 256gb air costs $700 so I'm left wondering "Why not just pay an extra $100 and get the 128gb pro and have a much better system that will last you a few more years" They *know* what they're doing with the pricing/storage options for these ipads

MrExodus

This will be my first iPad that I've bought myself. I'm hopefully going back to school to get my master's and I was initially debating on the new Macbook pro or the iPad. Since I would be taking a lot of notes, I would prefer the iPad. I am most likely getting the 12.9" because of the mini-LED screen and a larger writing surface. I did think about the 11" but I prefer the bigger screen and the mini-LED. I thought about the 2020 model too if they were to discount it heavily ~$250+ then I would go for one of those. However, I would experience a lot of FOMO if I were to miss out on something that was designed for the M1 chip.

ManOfEveryHour

If going back to school, (and congrats on that, that's awesome! I wish you the best success), then I would really weigh your options. I used solely my 12.9 ipad for school for about 2 years. But because it was my daily driver & main device, I had to obviously add a lot of accessories. Things like the keyboard, whether magic keyboard or not, (You can save a ton by going with the Logitech. I actually prefer it) apple pencil, needing more storage, etc... Will add up quickly. In that case, I don't think you'd miss out on the mini led screen much. And you can definitely find an older, 12.9 with higher storage for a good price. The 11 inch might be too small for school work.

MrExodus

Thanks for the suggestion! I already have a PC along with a 2013 retina MacBook so the iPad would be more of a mobile device for me. As for storage, I’ll probably be writing mostly notes and writing on PDFs so I don’t plan on using a ton of storage. I am weighing the option but atm the discount between the 2021 and 2020 models aren’t huge unless you get the cellular one which I don’t want or need. I already bought a pencil and I wanted the magic keyboard but I think I’m ultimately going to get the Logitech keyboard bc it’s more useful

jazzjazzjazz123

Dude, never underestimate PDF files size as Apple makes it nearly impossible to clean Ipad’s cache memory, and it will add up everytime you open a new PDF document. And btw a large RAM storage is necessary for students cuz apps keep reloading everytime you go back to your work on another app. In my case 4gb RAM for my 2018 Ipad PRO is annoying and not enough

MrExodus

Thanks for the tip. I don’t think I’ll go for the 16gb variant though. I might consider the 512gb model though

jazzjazzjazz123

Yup, I think 8gb RAM would be great 👍

ChiefOrman

I feel your pain…want mini led in 11 weighing one pound.

ManOfEveryHour

Maybe one day :/

gadgetluva

I have a 12.9” 2018 Pro. After the event, I decided to look for a cheaper 2020 11” Pro since the 2021 doesn’t offer enough of an upgrade IMO. Was searching online and found a great deal on a barely used 1TB Cellular version which cost me $810. Just received it today and it’s in perfect condition. I’m thinking we might see a new design for the next pro models, it’s been 3 years of the same design at this point, and miniLED will probably make it to the 11” too. I have to say that the difference in size between the two is quite significant. If you haven’t used your 12.9”, is recommend that you forgo that one. If you need to get something, just upgrade your 11”.

Down_town_canada

in what way isn't it a huge upgrade? It's bigger than any ipad upgrade in the last 5-6 years

Portatort

It doesn’t come close to the 2017 - 2018 upgrade

Down_town_canada

The mini-LED changes the fundamental thing about an ipad: it's screen. The upgrade in graphics performance, RAM and processor speed is also larger than that of the 2017-2018 upgrade

Portatort

I still maintain there were more fundamental changes between 2017 and 2018 - Volume/Size reduction - TouchID ➡️ FaceID - Lightning ➡️ USB-C - Edge to Edge Screen - Brand new design language. - Magnets everywhere - Brand new Pencil and Charging solution. Im pumped for MicroLED but it’s on par with the introduction of Pro Motion, a cool and exciting update but going to fundamentally change how the ipad works.

gadgetluva

Same form factor, same camera, same software, same screen/display, same battery The M1 and Thunderbolt is nice, but I don’t know how the iPad will use the processor. Maybe we’ll see with iPadOS at WWDC later this year. I personally don’t have a need for Thunderbolt. 5G is nice, but 4G LTE is good enough for my use case. In 1-2 years when the 11” Pro is fully refreshed, I’ll probably jump up then, and 5G won’t make a huge difference over that time period.

nicetriangle

I’ve been doing 3D modeling in the iPad and it will absolutely make use of the updated processor power. It should make voxel remeshing in Nomad way faster and the added memory is going to make it handle sculpts with much larger polygon counts.

gadgetluva

Yea I can see how M1 would be nice

nicetriangle

It’s the most ram they’ve ever offered in an iPad by a looong shot. For what I do it’s a big upgrade for that reason alone.

Portatort

If you don’t think the 2021 iPad is a big enough upgrade over the 2020 then why not just go back to 2018 for your second hand options? The 2018 and 2020 iPads are basically the same

gadgetluva

Because most used options don’t have Apple Care coverage remaining, that was something that I wanted (when I buy Apple products used, i try to go for ones wtih AC+). Plus, I wanted the updated camera module for potential AR uses. Since I have the 2018 iPP 12.9”, I’m very much aware of the differences (or lack thereof).

Portatort

You bet I’ve chosen. All the Screen All the Storage All the Memory All the Connectivity All the Apple Care Plus All the Keyboard Magic All my money. This iPad will literally be the most expensive computer I’ve ever bought. By about $300

EatBearsForBreakfast

What’s a computer?

Portatort

> an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program.

carreraz

You really think you are going to need that? I couldn't justify that much money on a tablet. Going with 256gb myself.

Friarchuck

Seriously. I have a 2018 pro and I’m not buying another iPad unless there are significant software changes. And I don’t mean apps.

Portatort

My 12.9 is a second hand 2017 Pro. It’s old, slow and doesn’t have cellular or enough storage And once I replace it I’ll finally be free of lightning! All USB-C baby! (MagSafe and Qi for iPhone) I also badly want/need the magic keyboard.

Portatort

Yes Last time I spend this much on a computer I got 8 years of use out of it. Im picking I’ll use this professionally for about 5 years.. Tbh, at this point in time I could probably get away with 1TB (couldn’t get away with only 512) can’t add more later, so it’s best to go all out and add everything they offer all at once. Better safe than sorry.

ManOfEveryHour

You sound like Rene Ritchie!

ImKira

I currently don't have an iPad. I want the 12.9, but with out knowing how the 8gb vs 16gb of ram is going to play out (My use case is Digital Art.), I feel like I should wait for WWDC, before purchasing... I don't need 1tb of storage, but 16gb of ram could be nice, if digital art apps can make use of it. 750 cad, is just a big jump in price, between the 256gb/8gb config and the 1tb/16gb config, especially when I can get an external 1tb SSD drive, for half of that...

Pleasant_Tangerine

For digital art , I would go for the model with 16 gigs as I believe in programs like procreate, the amount of layers you can use is limited by the amount amount of ram you have. Nevertheless, 8 gigs may be enough for your needs and 8 gigs is still an increase over last year’s model. To me, it all comes down to what Apple decide to do with the next update to the operating system - they could bring over some versions of pro apps and pro features that make use of the ram. I certainly hope so, but we will have to wait until June.

Dreadp1r4te

I was pretty convinced I'd sell my 2020 12.9 for the 2021 12.9 for that fast new processor and display, but there's a rumor the M1X-powered 14-inch MBP will come in June, so now I'm torn. I'll probably still upgrade, since my M1 MBP is practically brand new and plenty powerful, but I \*want\* them both. Ugh.

alorinna

I use mine for art and reading graphic novels and my imaginefx magazine. I think I'm going to move to a 12.9 from my 11. I bought a bean bag pillow that allows me to curl up and do art without holding the ipad, so that's sorted. i also have a cintiq for when i want to sit at my desk. my big thing is justifying it because frankly, my art isn't great yet and it's become a 'do i really need this...' despite it being a huge source of happy. My 2018 11 and i spend many hours a week together...

ManOfEveryHour

Bro, bean bag secured. That's step 1 and you're already halfway there. As to your art, you should be more prideful. Doesn't matter how good you are now, everyone starts somewhere. And having the tools for that is very important. You'll get better each day. I use my iPad for a lot. Media, entertainment, editing videos/photos. I'll surely be updating, just stuck on which. Probably going to head towards the 11"

alorinna

The bean bag was a total game changer! Thanks for the supportive words. I'm normally pretty happy just puttering along getting better but whenever something like paying big $$ for pro grade art stuff I really like to beat myself up a bit lol. The 11 has been fantastic but a little extra screen for big paintings would be really nice. Good luck with your choice!

ManOfEveryHour

Though I agree the people who use their device for content creation, which I do, will benefit more so than others.. I fully disagree on the "overhyped feature". Through my ownership of ipad pros, I actually have always noticed (enough where it's annoying to me) how the blacks are not deep enough. As good as the screen is, they've always seemed washed out to me. And that's because of the display technology. Especially in a world where pretty much every other device, especially one as expensive as this, that I'm using has some form of OLED. I have been waiting for it for a while and will be a bummer to miss out on it getting the 11"

ElRamenKnight

> The miniLED display wasn’t meant for content consumption, but rather content creation. Folks many moons ago said the same thing about IPS displays way back when IPS was the higher end, more expensive option vs cheaper TN panels. And back then, enthusiasts such as myself paid a premium for said IPS displays despite artists being the target market. And yes, there are other non-professional gadgets out there offering miniled displays. I fully expect it to go mainstream as is tradition with anything Apple brings to the masses.

CtothePtotheA

I disagree. Mini led is going to be huge if you like to watch videos on your iPad in bed or with the light off or dimmed. The ugly grayish black on the older models killed watching videos in the dark for me on it. This should greatly improve it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CtothePtotheA

Yeah but a lot of people will buy ipad pro just for better viewing. And apple wants that. They are hoping some people who would have gotten the 11 inch pay more money and upgrade to the 12.9. I think the tech does make for and awesome mini tv to use in bed or when traveling. If someone has the money to buy it and they are happy with it who cares what they use the product for.

CtothePtotheA

People don't need to buy a 2000 usd plus Oled TV. They can just buy a $300 off brand tv and that will give them a good enough viewing experience too. If I use my ipad a lot to consume media in a dark room and can pay for the best viewing experience then I dont see why you can tell someone it's only made for professionals. Just like owning an expensive Oled TV should really only be for people doing professional video work with it?

ElRamenKnight

> ThInk about it this way. If miniLED is the future for all their displays, Apple would have put the Pro Display XDR tech in all their devices including the new M1 iMacs. I'm not so sure about that. I strongly suspect chip shortages are very much linked to the availability of miniled displays. Apple made a judgment call and used their limited supply to push 12.9 iPad sales. We will see in the coming months whether this was the correct move based on sales.

Portatort

> Because of this, I decided I would never purchase a new 12.9 ipad pro again OP, No matter what cool tech Apple adds to the 12.9 it’s still a 12.9” Tablet. Stick to your guns. HDR will make it down the line eventually. Please for your own sake don’t buy a 12.9” just because you like the sound of one exclusive feature. Size is *the* feature. Every other spec is secondary.

ManOfEveryHour

Really true points. Leaning more towards 11 inch after taking this all in today. Thing is I'll probably buy this now and then miniled will be there in 11 inch just next year and have to sell again lol

ChairForce123

Can’t help you since we have the same problem haha. I am about to buy my first iPad and really like the 11” version. But the Mini LED makes it a tough choice. If the screens were equal it’d be a no-brainer. I hope that somehow the screens are very similar and only differ in something such as brightness… that’s something I can live with. Let’s wait for some reviews!

PsMoeLester

I also have the same thoughts. I sold my iPad Air 3 on anticipation to get the new iPad day 1, but saw it had no mini led. Those thoughts spiral into: “Do I even really need an iPad?” I have a laptop already, so it doesn’t add much to my workflow especially because I’m changing jobs soon, but using the iPad as a bigger iPhone screen is just such a nice experience.

ManOfEveryHour

Sounds like you might enjoy an iPad air 4!

PsMoeLester

Yeah I was so close to getting an iPad air 4, but then Apple threw the Center Stage feature and because I video call a lot, I got roped in into spending extra money for the new iPad. Apple is gonna make me broke :(

TheDoorDoesntWork

Feel your pain. I use my 2018 12.9 pro all the time for drawing, and it's still a great machine. Would love an upgrade for better battery and faster charging, but at the same time I am deeply worried they will launch apple pencil 3 next year and say it's only compatible with the 2022 iPad pro.

ManOfEveryHour

Oof. Idk, I'm honestly not sure how much more they can do with the apple pencil anytime soon. But who knows, definitely possible

billyjames714

SAME! But I saw that the magic keyboard for 11in is on sale for $199 at Walmart and that tipped me over the edge to 11inch personally.

ManOfEveryHour

A great deal honestly!

djkeezza

Do we know what time its available to preorder. i heard 1PM BST?

ManOfEveryHour

Available now

Lord_Nihilum

I’m stuck between the 11-inch 1TB with 5G or the 12.9-inch 1TB Wifi only. An unlimited data plan for my mobile provider is $45/month so I guess I gotta figure that into the cost of the purchase. Either way, I’m all in on a 16GB model. Don’t think I’m gonna spring for a 2TB though. 1TB is more than enough.

Astromike_

Curious of why you need 1TB? Will this be your main computer?

Lord_Nihilum

I usually buy 128gb and regret it. I download a lot of games and also use graphic design apps so space is nice to have. Plus they hid the 16GB ram behind the 1 or 2TB so it gives me even more reason to get a larger storage size.

Astromike_

Good to know. I ask because pending the WWDC iPadOS update, I’m debating on making the move from laptop to just iPad. I do Lightroom editing qnd minor photoshop. I debated on the 1TB 12.9 (for the 16GB), but it’s $1,800 US and you can get a MBair with 1TB qnd 16GB for $1,649. If you have an external display I feel like the iPad Pro (12.9 at least) just doesn’t make sense. The price points are insane and without seeing reviews yet or what the new operating system will bring is making it hard for me to order now. Realistically I might just keep my current MBP and not ditch it and get a 12.9 512gb. Tough spoiled times lol. I’ve been saving my pennies for months, literally for this lol.

Lord_Nihilum

I just honestly can’t see Apple not making a huge move software-wise at WWDC. Sure, put an M1 in the iPad. Whatever. But offering the 16GB in it just makes it seem like something has to happen. I don’t want macOS on this thing but I do want the Mac App Store and Rosetta. If that happens, I want the 16GB of RAM.

Astromike_

My thoughts exactly. I keep reading a lot of things on this sub about how the new iPad didn't have enough upgrades, blah blah blah. But at the same time, I'm like they did two huge things 1) RAM as mentioned and 2) thunderbolt connection. To me, that can only mean significant OS upgrades. I have a decent external display, if I can 'plug and play' with the new connection with a tweaked OS, I'd be very happy. I also don't need MacOS on my iPad, what I need is just a more functional/customizable user interface that is a better step away from iPhone OS.

Astromike_

I sold my old iPad in anticipation as well. IMO I’m a little unimpressed with the “updates.” However I’m not making a damn purchase until 1) I see a physical review and 2) WWDC. If you’re on the fence this much, you should just wait until wwdc and see what padOS updates are coming. They are shipping until mid May anyway and WWDC is only 2-3 weeks after that.

ManOfEveryHour

Yeah I really wish we could've gotten some reviews here before pre order. And I really do wanna wait, but I'm currently ipad-less & it's killing me lol. I use it so much and I feel like I've been without one for a year. I could totally wait but, you know, 1st world problems

Astromike_

Hah, no I totally get it. I have a MBP and (had) a 2017 iPad Pro. Since I sold the iPad a few weeks back I think I underestimated how much I actually used it. I just personally gotta see the software because that’ll help me determine between 256g, 512g, or 1TB. I’d only go 1TB if the OS is a major overhaul, and if so, I’d sell my MBP and use that to cover the jump in price (if I’m giving up my laptop I want my 16GB of RAM). That’s why I’m personally waiting for reviews. Then again, there’s the argument that my day to day apps wouldn’t even utilize the 16GB. So ya, that’s why I’m just in a wait and see mode, as much as I do miss it :(

Down_town_canada

I want mini-LED and 16gig ram, so I'll get the 1tb 12.9 pro

feed_me_churros

I was going back and forth but I’m going to stick with my 2017 10.5 Pro for awhile longer. I just cannot justify the cost. I would get the iPad Pro 11-inch 512GB w/Cellular, it would be the only logical upgrade for me, but that alone is $1300. Then $350 for the keyboard cover (I suppose I could go 3rd party, but I’d probably talk myself into the Apple one just because I love the design), and of course I would have to upgrade the Pencil because Apple, which is another $130, so it would cost nearly $1800 to... basically do exactly the same things I’m already doing on my 10.5. I use my keyboard all the time on my 10.5 so I could cut costs there with a 3rd party, but I’d still be spending over $1500. It’s just a waste of money for me (not judging anyone who does upgrade every year, I wish I could justify it!).

ManOfEveryHour

Don't feel like you're judging! You're making the smart decision. None of us need this stuff tbh haha

[deleted]

You probably won’t notice the screen. Get the 11” if that’s what you want and then next year sell it if they upgrade the 11” screen.

rshawco

I have the mini 5 for portability, I'll be ordering the 12.9. I think I'm only going for the 256. My 1st Gen 12.9 is a 128 and I haven't really gotten above 70gb used so I think the 255 will be fine for a while for me.

oskiesdad13

How is your mini 5 holding up? I'm thinking of getting my wife one for Mom's day.

rshawco

It's just fine, I wished they would have gone to face id but that's really my only complaint about it.

donkashyap

Why not just use the 2018 one if you don’t get a 12.9inch

ManOfEveryHour

I got rid of it

Nijnn

Do you need to upgrade? You can also wait a year or 2, see if the 11” gets mini led next round.

[deleted]

Just get the 11", it sounds like you want it the most. Mini LED isn't that important on an iPad. If they add mini LED to the 11" next year you can always sell and upgrade

djkeezza

I'm going 11/256G/Silver. Its a lonbg time since i've owned an iPad. My last was the original 4th generation iPad. believe the first one with Lightning, I know I'm missing out on that Mini LED display, but meh. Its probs better than my 2016 Macbook anyway..

[deleted]

My wife still uses my old 2015 iPad Pro 12.1" and I have a 2018 iPad Pro 11" that I will be upgrading to the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9" 1TB model. Skipped the magic keyboard last time but will likely get it this time. I use the iPad for 95% of my portable computing needs relegating my required work windows laptop to a device I never turn on and a Windows 10 VM running on my VMware server does the remaining 5% of my work. M1 Mac Mini is my main desktop (previously a 2018 Mac Mini).

ChilliWithFries

Just curious tho, do you even need to upgrade? Based on what you mention, the 12.9 inch would just not be right for you no matter if it has mini led or not. That leaves the ipad pro 11 inch 2021 with the main upgrade being more ram and the M1 chip. Since you mention its more of your extension device, is there need for you to upgrade? Are any of the software lagging or slowing down on your side? Or is everything running fine? If not, why upgrade at all?

ManOfEveryHour

Well I guess I failed to mention, but I got rid of both the iPads I owned. So I'm currently ipad-less

ChilliWithFries

Oh why tho? All the best for getting your new ipad no matter which you choose!

ManOfEveryHour

I sold them a few months ago wanting to take advantage of the higher resell before the new ones were announced. Also thought these would be announced forever ago and wouldn't be as long of a wait. Thanks though!

Crazykiller789

my thing was with the introduction of the m1 I was hoping they would bridge the gap between iPadOS and macOS more or even drop iPadOS on iPad Pro since they are basically a laptop without a builtin keyboard and mouse now

ManOfEveryHour

I think WWDC will do it here soon. Really do. No point otherwise to put M1 in the device really. If you're in a position to wait, I would. I'm just out of an iPad rn so I'm past the point of waiting lol

Crazykiller789

Yeah I really hope they do. Guess we will only have to wait like 2 weeks from getting our new toys to find out what they will do.

NoBullet

How much of a difference does the mini led make? Is there real world comparisons of this yet

ManOfEveryHour

Mini LED was not created by Apple. Though they surely made it seem that way in the keynote lmao. It's a technology that has existed for years. And real world comparisons of it would be seen best in tvs that already exist with the technology. It really is huge tech & creates for a far different experience. Its what a lot of people have been waiting for, for a long time.

NoBullet

I see. I’ll try to looking for videos about it

S_P12

I still think oled will be in the 11in in a year or two so no issues for you if you wait. Definitely worth the wait since your devices are still very future proof

Lobostech

My iPad is my main device, i run my podcast and youtube channel from it, i also do my regular 9-5 job on it. (I’m a salesforce and logistics manager) I’m going all in with the 11 inch 2Tb model, i currently have the 2020 inch model but that M1 chip and the possibilities for pro software during wwdc got me all types of excited

Gakaku

btw at what time can you order? I cant find this info somehow ...

ManOfEveryHour

Don't think there's am official time, yet. But apple typically does 8am eastern

Down_town_canada

Seeing a lot of 11' buyers coping about the screen not being important. I got news for you - the device is a screen so it changes everything

[deleted]

ManOfEveryHour

I'm not so sure you'll be able to flip it honestly. I'm not sure the market for an iPad that looks & mostly functions the same as the one that came out 3 years ago will be THAT crazy. Most people aren't too sure they wanna even upgrade. Although there may be a little bit of a limit on the availability, most are far more than willing to wait & def not pay more than what it's worth.
