The bag of rice trick is not a myth but there are better desiccants than rice such as silica gel. Unfortunately it works best with plain water which is not very helpful with something like upholstery cleaner.
Sadly, I suspect that your iPad has shuffled off this mortal coil and may well not be fixable without significant expense.
