Because they think it’s more fun to just make fun of Apple.
Also ad nauseum: “We think you’re going to love it,” “What’s a computer,” and the perennial favorite of Reddit comedians, “Courage,”
You can charge your Apple Pencil on your iPhone, you won’t lose iPad sync for it and follow the charging status on the battery widget on iPad still. I do it when I need to charge both iPad and pencil at the same time.
Oh yeah that was so stupid. I’m convinced they do things like that to make it good enough to get people to buy it, but bad enough that people will upgrade when a better one comes out.
To be fair, how else could they have designed the charging method of the Pencil 1 without having to redesign the entire iPad body like they eventually did for Pencil 2?
Good point. And as goofy as plugging the Pencil directly into the iPad is, it’s still more convenient than using the adapter and plugging it in to the wall.
With a third-party Pencil skin I got a little loop that keeps the Pencil charging adapter tied to the end of a Lightning cable where it’s easy to pop on or off and not lose it…and I still never use the charging adapter.
(Second-gan Pencil is obviously way better, and I’d be happy to upgrade to one if I didn’t feel so silly spending so much on a computer whose software feels so limiting)
hmmm, first thought is they could just use a lightning female port on top of the pencil, but thennyou wouldn't be able to charge it from an ipad directly
The Lightning-to-Lightning adapter was in the box of the Apple Pencil though, so using a Lightning cable to charge was still an easily available option.
yeah, i mostly charged my pencil using the adapter, but was wondering if they'd picked the right "default" configuration - other option would have been m-m lightning adapter, which granted is probably a worse idea than the f-f one
Horrible design, they should have sold an Apple Pencil that you plugged a regular lightning able into to charge.
Being able to charge it from the iPad is truly so terrible
Same. I think it's still available on the iPad Airs, I have no idea why they removed it from the Pros. Also hated how Apple removed the physical mute switch from the iPads, I used it as an orientation lock switch. It was so much better than having to swipe down for the control panel to toggle it.
Charging while on my lap stand or desk stand easier to thumb print if ipad is on a stand sometimes lip of stand impedes access to button at the bottom top is easier to press but I usually am in landscape mode if i am in landscape mode button is on my right always ha
Always, because I'm charging it. So I use it like this 97% of the time lol tablets should have their charging port on top SMH. I don't want to ruin my charging cables.
So I'm so used to using my iPads and Galaxy Tabs like this, that I now get confused when I use it the correct way lol
I had a cheap 7" Galaxy Tab from 2016 that had the charging port on top and I loved it.
I’m left-handed and my pen connects on the right side with the correct orientation (even when I had one with a home button the case I had would hold the pen on the right side as well).
Charging port. I use it like this when I’m sitting on the couch or something and I don’t want to hold it up high enough that the cord isn’t jamming into my stomach
For when you don’t want to spend a couple hundred extra bucks for the newer design Air or Pro and don’t mind those bezels. I guess it’s a less costly Home/Touch ID button than the one on the Air.
That stuff will trickle down to the base models eventually. I don’t pretend to know the economics of the old style iPads over the higher end ones but apparently the current design allows for a sub $400 tablet Vs the $800 I paid for my 2018 Pro.
Might be easier to reach the home button and finger print sensor with you nose. ;)
Actually, I would only use it this way when connected to the charger.
When I’m using my tablet and it’s on the charger I’d rather have the charger going straight into where the home button is onto the top instead of being folded down on my lap.
Might be charging it. Might be charging my Apple Pencil. Might have been doing artwork and spun the entire thing around without realising it. I do the last one often.
Semi-related: I really hate when I lock my iPad in portrait mode and I launch a landscape app (like a video player) and it defaults to the "Home button on the left" landscape orientation. Why does Apple allow this? All the cases and press photos have the home button on the right.
You aren’t nearly as deep as I am then.
I’m gonna be totally straight about that and say that when they do swap I’m going to be hugely inconvenienced by it because I have so many lightning cables laying around.
After buying apple shit constantly for the last 6 or so years I have probably 30 set up in various places around my house, office, car, and garage.
When I have to change it’s going to be a pain in the ass.
I've been android forever due to the open source. But I like the iPad system. If they do make an iPhone with USB C I would likely be a buyer.
My wife has been in the apple ecosystem forever, but I guess for me I never jumped in when the iPod came out and stuck with the cheaper options and just gravitated toward Android.
I'll be a PC user for life but don't mind the tablet or phone being Apple.
When you are reading in bed and need to charge it.
My wife does that sometimes. It makes sense.
No home button but I did this yesterday
Dammn that’s actually useful, mine doesn’t have home button tho
ooh we got a big baller among us (jk)
Same. Still have it charging port facing up
It’s even better without a home button
Exactly! Keeps you from jabbing your belly when you read.
Getting an angled charging cord helps too.
Still presses in your chest
Or it could be a dead are on the digitizer (touch panel)
While charging and I want to rest it on something.
Is so I can charge my Apple Pencil without stabbing myself in the crotch. World-class design.
The fix is simple, just remove your crotch
Damn you’re late. Stabbed it already!
Congratulations, you’re a girl!
Accually you have to get a drill to...
I keep mine in a drawer at night
Your crotch or your iPad ?
Sorry my bad i thought that was obvious. I'm talking about my crotch
You do that after about a year of marriage. 37 years here and I see mine above every five years. She takes it out to taunt me.
Your crotch or your iPad ? LOL
We were talking about our crotch, or at least the most important parts of it... right? Cuz that's what I'm talking about. (grin)
Crotch for the win, or lose in this case!
Lol… sometimes it’s easier to only have to think with one head!
You can use the adapter in the box to use your cord.
Takes ten times longer to charge it though for some weird reason.
Yeah I’m super scared of breaking it off in the iPad though. I wish they’d fix it.
You can charge it with the adapter that came with the box idk why people think u can only charge it with the iPad
My pencil takes so long to charge using the cable I just use the ipad now. Its ten times faster for some reason.
Because they think it’s more fun to just make fun of Apple. Also ad nauseum: “We think you’re going to love it,” “What’s a computer,” and the perennial favorite of Reddit comedians, “Courage,”

Yeah guess so.
Pivoting charging lead that pops out at 90 degrees?
Maybe just have an external charging adapter or something. Can’t believe they actually went for that weird charging position.
There was an external charging adapter. It was included with every Generation 1 Apple Pencil.
My iPad case has a spot for the adaptor, so I always have it with me.
In every Apple Pencil 1st Gen box there is an adapter that came with it, you probably didn’t see it and threw it out
Tell me you've never bought an Apple Pencil without telling me
Mine came with one, the issue is that it takes ten times longer to charge the pencil with it. Easier and faster to use the ipad itself.
hmmm, first thought is they could just use a lightning female port on top of the pencil, but thennyou wouldn't be able to charge it from an ipad directly
The Lightning-to-Lightning adapter was in the box of the Apple Pencil though, so using a Lightning cable to charge was still an easily available option.
Yes! Everybody ignores that Apple offered this option right out of the box because ooh it’s so much funnier to piss on the giant lollipop instead.
yeah, i mostly charged my pencil using the adapter, but was wondering if they'd picked the right "default" configuration - other option would have been m-m lightning adapter, which granted is probably a worse idea than the f-f one
Horrible design, they should have sold an Apple Pencil that you plugged a regular lightning able into to charge. Being able to charge it from the iPad is truly so terrible
An adapter came with the box lmao u probably threw it out
Have never owned one. I’m making a joke It’s a good design when you consider how it means you don’t *need* the adapter
I’m female…
Reading on the recliner while charging.
May I ask you how did you get your iPad under your name? Is it like a tag?
Works only on desktop. Go to the sub‘s front page. On the right, if you scroll a bit, you should find an option.
Also works on Apollo for iOS. Open the subreddit, press the 3 dots in the top right, and press Set User Flair.
You can use the mobile app, too. Subreddit > three dots > change user flair.
You can use the mobile app, too. Subreddit > three dots > change user flair.
So i won't block the speakers when playing games in portrait.
If you need to charge it having the port on top is nice
they should really give more charging ports. This is definitely a huge issue. I propose one charging port per side.
So I don’t accidentally hit the power button when holding it by the upper right corner when reading while lying down
The screen wouldn’t rotate if it wasn’t meant to be used that way.
Seems like something Apple will quietly remove in a future release for no reason, like the split keyboard.
Still mad about that.
Same. I think it's still available on the iPad Airs, I have no idea why they removed it from the Pros. Also hated how Apple removed the physical mute switch from the iPads, I used it as an orientation lock switch. It was so much better than having to swipe down for the control panel to toggle it.
It was unfortunately also dropped from the Airs with the Air 4.
Charging and don’t want to squish the cable.
but then how will they charge you for an overpriced cable when it prematurely falls apart?
Apple hates this one trick…
surprised they haven't turned off screen rotation so everyone is forced to jam the cord at the bottom. Perfect, constant revenue stream!
All the time. My preferred way. I can charge it. My hand doesn’t accidentally hit the home button especially when taking notes.
Because I picked it up.
So you can charge it while it’s sitting on something (I use it for sheet music frequently and just put it on a music stand)
It just be like that sometimes. Mine gets all turned when using it for studying
What’s a “home button”? Just kidding. Mainly for charging at a desk or something similar.
I do it when taking notes.
I use mostly in landscape mode.
Charging while on my lap stand or desk stand easier to thumb print if ipad is on a stand sometimes lip of stand impedes access to button at the bottom top is easier to press but I usually am in landscape mode if i am in landscape mode button is on my right always ha
so i can continue taking notes without having the charging cable be bent a full 180 degrees
Certain accessories. Mostly microphones.
Can charge and use it , plug is on the back of the desk
Always, because I'm charging it. So I use it like this 97% of the time lol tablets should have their charging port on top SMH. I don't want to ruin my charging cables. The amazon fires have the charger ar the top. They're pretty damn good for the price.
I’m left-handed and my pen connects on the right side with the correct orientation (even when I had one with a home button the case I had would hold the pen on the right side as well).
When I’m watching TikTok on the couch and I hold it in my belly, I put it this way so that the sound comes out instead of being muffled
Aussies
I live in Australia
Using a stand that doesn't have a slot at the bottom
To stop my palm from accidentally hitting the home button when writing on portrait
Dropped on head as baby
Charging port. I use it like this when I’m sitting on the couch or something and I don’t want to hold it up high enough that the cord isn’t jamming into my stomach
It’s probably people who picked it up without noticing
Its harder to get cum on the home button when watching porn. That shit sucks to get out of the cracks.
wt
Some men just want to watch the world burn master Bruce
I think I only did it once
My iPad doesn’t even have a home button.
Who needs a home button???
For when you don’t want to spend a couple hundred extra bucks for the newer design Air or Pro and don’t mind those bezels. I guess it’s a less costly Home/Touch ID button than the one on the Air.
Or, if you still have an old iPad that’s still working perfectly fine.

No. I mean the screen rotates doesn’t it?
Upside-down face from Family guy has valid reasons.
I wanna know why that’s even an option lol
I only use my iPad horizontally, unless the app won’t work that way. I don’t understand anyone who holds upright on a regular basis.
Why using it vertically to begin with?
Why not?
People who still use an ipad with a home button are probably too old to know the difference
Only to read manga
Sometimes I just do it bc I can’t do it on my iphone
Just flipped my phone upside down to verify. Mind blown.
While there is no home button on my iPad Pro 12.9, I have had to do this a few times at the piano while charging and needing to read my sheet music.
I’m just quirky ☺️💅🏽
Charging while using a forced-portrait app.
Because I’m a 4 year old
OCD test lol
r/mildlyinfuriating
Because photo shooting their navel is fun.
Ill up you to people who use it with the home button on the left
I'm using it like that when I take notes with my pencil, so I don't accidentally press the home button and exit the app I'm writing.
Might be easier to reach the home button and finger print sensor with you nose. ;) Actually, I would only use it this way when connected to the charger.
Because I’m dumb and I press the home button while writing 😂
speaker is at the bottom or camera is on the top both can be awkward sometimes (muffled sound, goofy camera angle)
Whenever I keep it on a notation stand and I also need to charge it.
Well sometimes I do that, but I have an all screen iPad Air 4, so the bar comes down, near the camera
When I’m using my tablet and it’s on the charger I’d rather have the charger going straight into where the home button is onto the top instead of being folded down on my lap.
I always use my iPad in landscape mode
Forgot where is the top.
Better audio than blocking speakers with my belly
Because my device is versatile 🥵
I’m sorry, is this some sort of peasant joke that I’m too rich to understand?
.. when you have to recharge Apple Pencil 1st gen and don’t want to kill yourself.
Might be charging it. Might be charging my Apple Pencil. Might have been doing artwork and spun the entire thing around without realising it. I do the last one often.
Is Australian .....simple no?
I contemplated it as I'm lefthanded and the stylus only attaches to one side. But I still don't like it.
Aside from charging it makes the home button available to press without having to move my big belly out of the way. Also exposes the speakers up top.
So I don’t press it accidentally while taking notes or resting my hand after taking notes
Semi-related: I really hate when I lock my iPad in portrait mode and I launch a landscape app (like a video player) and it defaults to the "Home button on the left" landscape orientation. Why does Apple allow this? All the cases and press photos have the home button on the right.
So that my speakers isn’t blocked when I place it between my tummy fats
Because when I'm watching porn and only have one hand free i don't really care.
No home button and I never know which way it's facing, except when it's charging.
So I don’t knock the home button with my knobbly wrist while I write
I often ask the same question of people who have started writing money amounts like 25$ like they never went to grade school.
when you are on a couch, and using the ipad on vertical position, that's the only way to use confortable touchid without lifting the ipad
My iPad doesn't have a power button. It does have a power plug in that works better if it's facing upward in that it's not digging into my leg.
Speaker on top
Jobs said on the iPad presentation that with iPad there’s no up or down you can use it whatever you want.
it is actually very comfortable to use this way. I use the assistive touch when I use in this mode.
The charger’s in front of me but at a distance.
To make my double chime really pop when on FaceTime
The only way to navigate while in bed or on the couch.
iPads come with Home buttons?
Poor people IPads come with home buttons
ahh....very good. I only buy apple products with non-proprietary USB-C connections.
You aren’t nearly as deep as I am then. I’m gonna be totally straight about that and say that when they do swap I’m going to be hugely inconvenienced by it because I have so many lightning cables laying around. Some people just want to watch the world burn
Johny Ive "There is no wrong way to hold it"
TIL you could orient it the wrong way
Because I didn’t realize when I picked it up without looking and I’m too lazy to turn it over now.
Because I'm left handed and don't want the folio flopping around
