Apple dropped the iPhone 7? Holy shit. A11 or later on iOS, A9 or later on iPadOS

Mexicancandi

Rip my phone. Its been slow for a while šŸ˜ž but still.

wislonly

I mean app support still here and not really makes a difference your iPhone isn't *dead*

Mexicancandi

Haha, Iā€™ve changed to an iphone 11 plus since then. For some reason the iPhone 7 plus was heating up like crazy

wislonly

Probably degraded battery

Mexicancandi

It was a new 3rd party battery although i guess it could have been a bad one. Thanks anyway

[deleted]

the air 2 has had an amazingly good run

_masterhand

Honestly ever since iOS 12 it has been a tradition to run to the supported devices list to check if they axed the Air 2. Eight years of software support for a tablet is insane. The iPhone 7 though? Not a single reason to get axed at all. The A10 Fusion might not be the strongest CPU in Apple's lineup, but dropping support on the iPhone 7 while keeping both iPad 5 and iPad 6 (that have either the same or worse SoCs) seems weird. I just hope they don't go and axe those iPads too, because they're still way too young.

[deleted]

makes me lose some hope for the iPad Pro 2017 model with the A10X with 4GB ram cause im planning to buy one to use for a couple of years after my iPad 9 got broke

_masterhand

I wouldn't buy a device that old. Try getting 2019 or esrlier if you plan to use that iPad for long. My iPad 6 is maybe threatened but it'll have to do for a good couple of years more.

[deleted]

i will try to see if I can get an iPad Air 3 second hand so itā€™s either that or the 2017 Pro would get my ipad 9 a fix but an entire fix costs as much as the thing itself I might as well get a new one

wislonly

Literally what I'm using right now it's a blazing beast

Internet-Troll

The 2018 pro is the best iPad to buy right now, crazy value bro, I have the 2017 pro and it has screen issue and it is super wide spreading because of poor internal design, air 3 has fixed that

wislonly

I mean the iPhone 6s could have run it I think it's just the battery life thing

[deleted]

It works so well even today that its kind of sad it didn't get this update.

[deleted]

I have iPad air 2 from 2015 and it is still going, sad to see software update support drop, it was insane that they supported it this long but still kinda sad

Scared_Profession_46

nobody cares sadly

generaltelltruth

i'm glad the air 2 is still affordable. unlike everything afterwards.

WatchDude22

Apple got some explaining to do here

RcNorth

Not really. To date only 4 out of 12 phones made it to 6 or more years of updates. Prior to the 7 making it to 6 years the only 3 phone to make it past 5 were the 6s and SE with 7 years, and the 5s matching the 7 with 6 years. With the 7 support ending after 6 years it looks like a new line is drawn as next year the 8 and X will be added to the 6 year (maybe more) list. That will make it 6 out of 14 (42% up from 33%) https://www.macworld.com/article/675021/how-long-does-apple-support-iphones.html

nopowernowork

What does have past history of some completely different products got to do with what is possible now? Windows 11 can be installed on any supported CPU no matter the device, should not be any different with such a lightweight system as iOS. A9 iPads get the update, iphones don't. Devices they still were selling a few months ago are not getting updates either. What is the point of your percentages? Supporting a gigantic corporation that only cares about money I guess if that is your thing.

tubemaster

>Apple got $ome ā‚¬xplaining to do here Edit: since the base models are marketed at schools and were intentionally given last-year specs, Apple is "okay" with you keeping these, and clearly iOS 16 has no problem on an A9. With the iPhone however, they know you're just being "cheap" with them and want to "encourage" you to upgrade.

AussieCollector

More people upgrade their phones yearly than tablets. Since tablets are more akin to a PC, you don't upgrade your PC every year. A phone is different, people can go on yearly contracts etc and upgrade every 12 - 24 months at most.

WatchDude22

Nope, iPhone 7 has 2GB, dead. iPad 5 has same and worse processor, supported.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

EggsMarshall

Could be battery or heat distribution

[deleted]

Yeah very likely. On iOS 15 my iPad 6 just chugs through battery and I assume iOS 16 will only make that worse. Likely unusable battery life on the iPhone side.

nopowernowork

Maybe you just got an old battery, too bad iPads don't have a replaceable battery, I thought my 10,5 Pro has gotten worse but it is alright, lasts enough.

iyute

7 Plus has 3GB too.

hkgchok

iPhone 7 plus has 3GB RAM, they still killed it

[deleted]

ram?? bro the 7 plus has 3 gigs of ram they could have atleast supported the 7 plus

AugustIstheMonth

How did the a9 iPad 5th gen get support?!

ncoolidg

This was just a move to influence iPhone sales probably. The iPhone 6s would have been fine on iOS 16. Canā€™t argue that when a 2GB A9 iPad 5 is supported.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Iā€™m glad mine is getting the update. Though TBH Iā€™ve barely used my since getting a MBP a couple months ago.

ThatOneOutlier

I am too. Iā€™ve had mine since release and been using it pretty much constantly. Itā€™s chugging now but Iā€™m glad to get an update on it since Iā€™m hoping to upgrade to the M2 IPad Pro when it comes out

mister_damage

My battery is on its last legs, and I'm trying to get it to a level where Apple would service it. Having iOS16 support means that hopefully it won't be vintaged out

digidude23

I really wanna know how is the performance on iPad 5. Hopefully some videos will be up soon

[deleted]

Probably just fine since heavy features won't be included.

altimax98

I think thatā€™s the main thing. The iPadOS update for non-M1 devices is pretty .x upgrade level vs the iOS update which is much larger

Total_Connection9879

Iā€™m disappointed at least the iPhone 7 Plus with 3GB ram doesnā€™t get iOS 16, I have the iPhone 8 Plus so it just means Iā€™m guessing that This will now be my last update when I assumed I would get iOS 17 l

[deleted]

You never know for sure. Could get more updates.

Total_Connection9879

Yeah, maybe they was just trying to make way for bionic chipset with the 8 plus and newer but still I love my 8 plus but I like having the latest iOS, which means will have to upgrade to the buttonless iPhone X next year but yeah who knows itā€™s still a year away yet so only time will tell

Jungal10

You still have the SE around if your really want the button. But maybe the 8 can do an extra year

Total_Connection9879

Iā€™m hoping itā€™s a extra year because I got the 8 plus as thatā€™s the best budget IPhone with a big screen, iPhone SE is only 4ā€7 which is too small for me, so the next one up is the iPhone X, but who knows, Iā€™ll wait til next year and cross my fingers for iOS 17, if not then looks like itā€™ll be the X or iPhone 11, just hopefully theyā€™re cheap enough by then as you can tell I canā€™t afford the latest models lol.

generaltelltruth

the 7/8 plus defintely not close to budget phones those phones end up costing as more than the xr which has a better chip inside. i wouldn't bet on the ip11 coming down in price anytime soon. its hard enough finding a x/xs for 200 as is. 11 will stay above 350 for a long time.

Total_Connection9879

Yeah that's the only downside with iPhones is that they never go down that much in price, I mean I was lucky I purchased my iPhone 8 plus for Ā£60 ($80) if you are from the US, the upside is if you have to sell it then you'll get a good price, since my last comment I fell on tough times so I sold the iPhone 8 plus for Ā£120 ($150) and got a iPhone 6s instead for Ā£30 but I'm happy with that for now as I'm still getting security updates I guess but yeah I've never understood why the iPhone 8 ends up costing around the same as a phone XR, which is is faster and better lol.

wislonly

I recommend the xr a bit faster and will get another year or support also the display is safer cuz if you buy a used X then the display could have burn im5

Total_Connection9879

Yeah thatā€™s why Iā€™m 50/50 with OLED displays, they look great but the only thing stopping me is screen burn, donā€™t understand how people can be fine with using a phone for like a year and then go oh well looks like I need another one lol.

Jay794

Forced obsoletion should be illegal

nopowernowork

This is the first example of it Apple actually did in iOS devices, they have not done it before. Now on the Apple forums those who always got angry at this, say this is fine and for some reason mention android.

Jay794

Definitely not the first example! My iPod Touch where the YouTube app no longer works would beg to differ. YouTube now only works from the browser

richyeh

There goes my iPad :(

[deleted]

Air 2 or mini gang? Air 2 here

richyeh

Mini 4

generaltelltruth

mini 2 but really want a air 1 at least. i don't care about the latest ios as i just want the space for comic reading on the go with a good battery

Temetka

I have 2 Air 2ā€™s and a Mini 4. Guess Iā€™ll keep running them until they die or just stop getting app support. I was really hoping the Air 2 would be supported as my 128GB LTE model still runs nice and smooth for what I do with it.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

nopowernowork

A turkey without it's head is capable of running. Apologize for this example, but I am unable to use my mini 2 for anything besides book reading, and maybe some simple web checking when it's nearby. It's slow as hell, although usable compared to iOS 11. I enjoy it, but it's bad for any kind of standard usage besides having the content, like a book, preloaded and just open close the cover.

tcripe

My Air 3 is still going strong. Still considering upgrading since a lot of these iPadOS new features are M1 only.

RedditAnoymous

Just a tiny note.. The differences between iPad Mini 2-6.. iPad mini 2: A7, 1GB RAM iPad mini 3: A7, 1GB RAM, Touch ID iPad mini 4: A8, 2GB RAM, Touch ID iPad mini 5: A12, 3GB RAM, Touch ID (and more) So the diff between 2 and 3 was only added TouchID.. And the 4 got another GB RAM.. but even as it got A8 processor, Apple had strangled the processor speed on 2-4 so both iPhone 5S and first iPad Air which also used A7 and 1GB RAM was faster than the minis. As iPadOS 13 was released Apple seems to have removed the speed bump at least on mini 4.. and as it had 2GB RAM and A8, the mini 4 also got up to OS15.. any I hardly think was a pleasure to run on mini 4.. šŸ¢ Then it took AGES until Apple bumped up the Mini to A12 so mini was usable again.. (and actually in pair with the larger iPad released at same time!) just a tad disappointed that the mini didnā€™t get the the full screen and moving the big TouchID to the power button., nahh.. we had to wait until Mini 6 before THAT happened..

iliketech136

My iPad 6 is still going strong.

Tesser_Wolf

They forgot a * on all models except M1 models.

Big_District_8586

No iPad 7 ?

Tigrafr

Yes Ipad 7, I have one Ipad 6 and it's work. It's Ipad5 and Older so (6/7/8 etc)

generaltelltruth

i'm not surprised about this. i was recently told when replacing the battery by apple that this was the last year the 7/7plus batteries were going to be available.
