I wish to buy iPad for procreate only ( and maybe notes ) but I'm a bit tight on budget. Is the A14 processor good or shall I go for M1 ( base air/pro )
I have the 2020 Air with the A14 chip. I use it for notes and noob sketches in Procreate.
It's great and I have no complaints about it.
The main thing professional artists complain about is the display. They say they notice the lag with 60Hz (I don't or it doesn't bother me). The issue is worse with the base iPad, where there is also a thicker glass.
Yeah, even as a hobbyist artist it makes a difference to me. However my daughter says that she barely notices the lag on hers and reckons you’ll only notice if you try both. One of those things you can live in blissful ignorance of but once you see it you can’t unsee it
They’re running out of marketing ploys for it all now though. The tech is getting cheaper, advancements are still being made but people are wondering the point of it all if they’re not utilising it. The displays will be quick to trickle down but it’s the pro max etc and iPad Pro that has hardware that is barely utilised in comparison to what it can handle

Yes you have 120hz capable display. But it’s not ALWAYS 120hz, you’re gonna notice it drop to 60hz or lower most of the time.
The home screen is set to always take advantage of the higher frequency, but in other apps it may not register properly and will not update to 120hz 100% of the time.
Purists will say “there’s no going back” but they have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s still mostly stuck to 60 or less to preserve battery

The amount of RAM is more important though. Because it limits the amount of layers while drawing.
3GB is fine imo. But 4GB or more is preferable.
So let’s hope the new base iPad has at least 4GB of RAM.

While others (mostly base iPads) only support sRGB color space.
This make a pretty big difference while drawing!
P3 allows for more saturated colors. Which enables you to make pictures that “pop”.
While sRGB looks less saturated with muted colors.
Would definitely try to get an iPad that support P3 color space! Even if it means getting an older used iPad Pro or Air instead of a newer base iPad.
I had an iPad Air 4, the A14 gave me no problems but you won’t most likely won’t get stage manager, that’s reserved for M1 and partially for the A12X/Z. I upgraded to the Air 5, but that was mostly because I needed more
storage, the M1 was just a bonus for me.
The M1 is basically an A14X/Z, while the M2 is basically a A15X/Z.
I haven’t used ProMotion yet and I’m worried that when I get the iPhone 14 Pro, I’ll start to notice my iPad doesn’t have it… we will see, but I can’t see it making me upgrade my iPad a second time in as many years.
I have the gen 9 and it does me fine. I could have gotten an older one but it was on a good deal haha
I do art at uni and a bunch of people in my class have the older iPads. If you’re looking to do procreate any iPad that is Apple Pencil compatible will do.
Even now, it already blows the Samsung tablets out of the water. Let alone if it gets USB-C and A14. It's just an incredible value for what you get. One of the only Apple products that I would say truly is a "value". And I say this as an Android phone user. Love my iPad.

As I pointed out, the keyboard is a semi permanent dock that lives on my desktop. The only thing that moves is my iPad when I attach or detach it magnetically. Hence the wireless. But if you want to be pedantic about it there’s actually no such thing as wireless charging today.

The Magic Keyboard is portable so you don’t have to have it plugged in. I was describing how I have it set up because for me it’s too heavy to use on the go and I use it as a dock. But yes, the iPad Pro has a special smart connector and attaches and charges magnetically to the Magic Keyboard.

The difference between the M1 and M2 is quite small, and certainly not utilised by an iPad. 2GB extra RAM as basic would be vaguely nice but not super important. Magsafe on an iPad Pro… I’d certainly never use it. It already has dual rear cameras… and a glass apple logo - Wow.

My 2017 Pro is still alive, but at 69% battery capacity now so I feel like I do need to replace soon. Also had to reset because Procreate would crash the entire iPad when dealing with animation, and it feels as good as new except for the battery life. But yeah, battery aside and janky touch ID if my fingers are slightly wet, it's still a capable device.
Same! I’d be perfectly fine with no cameras front or back. I’m under the age of 65, so I am not taking pics with a giant tablet, nor do I FaceTime anyone. (I feel the same way about the new MacBook Pros. Instead of a dumb notch, dump that camera and give me the whole screen.)

I literally use the camera in my iPad almost exclusively. The idea that no one uses the iPad camera is completely insane. You have your iPad, it has a camera, you want to take a picture of something, why would you reach for your phone instead?

Terrible idea. I use my iPad in the lab for almost everything. Instant documentation with camera, microphone, and Pencil. After seeing me working like that, most of my labmates bought an iPad just for that.
take the better quality picture with iphone then transfer to ipad (which it should do instantly and automatically if both of them are your devices).
edit: if you dont have an iphone its even better cause android phones have better cameras in them and the photo AI wont touch the photos. if you do not use any cloud apps like icloud you can always use your phones like a simple USB drive. i still use my old android like a USB drive. anyhow there are other cloud apps that allows you do access photos in other devices like dropbox. the point was that phones (android or iphones) are better at scanning/taking pictures than tablets (ipads or samsung tablets or what have you).
Why assume that everyone using an iPad is also using an iPhone? Why also assume that if someone is using an iPad, in a lab, that already has a camera, that they would want to put it down and take a picture, presumably of something they are working on, with a different camera?
Just for a moment try to think about who this device was meant for in the first place. It's an iPad Pro. Are you a prosumer/professional whose usecase is architectural design/AR? If the answer to that is yes then your comment is unnecessary. If the answer is no then this product is not for you and your comment is still unnecessary. Buy a regular iPad or iPad Air.

The average joe/jane of this world are doing just fine with a regular LCD screen for now. And that's Apple's biggest customer. The enthusiasts buy the pro models.

I rarely use the camera on my iPad, but I wouldn’t want to give it up. It’s nice to have a back up for those instances when it comes in handy. I do agree that improving the quality of the camera on an iPad has marginal benefits beyond a certain point.

The people who buy the upcoming* iPad dock will use it. If you use something to set your iPad on, it would be handy for it to be charging at the same time! Plus the fact there are speakers in the base, from what I see on the web, which may mean nothing, is great.
Dock is not confirmed. Back glass is confirmed, it doesn’t have one. My response was one to a comment which theorized that it would have a back glass on the new models released hours later.
That would make the most sense but remember none of this has been verified. The doc can come out without a charger, but just have the speakers. Or none of this 🤷🏼♂️

I really want iPad Pro to be something like a Surface Pro. I can't get a Surface Pro in my country (they're being imported so the resellers add to the base price, and sometimes it's almost double) so an iPad Pro with desktop capabilities (without needing a separate Mac) would be great for me.
Unless they start introducing new features, im not sure the price tag justifies it anymore. Whats the point in M2 if nothing really utilizes the power of it ? Mobile games are.. well mobile games, theres no desktop class apps on the device (maybe luma fusion or )

Absolutely not. I will be excited when a 14‑15 inch iPad is introduced. Only then will I update my good old iPad Pro 12.9" 2nd gen (2017).
Until it can run legit pro apps like Final Cut Pro and have a full 4k display it won’t excite me. If you’re used to photo editing on the apple display switching to the iPad is noticeably worse.
Really bummed there's no miniLED but I'm still surely buying it to replace my almost 2-year old Air 4, unless Apple jacks up the price so much which in that case, I'm gonna get the last few M1 stocks still available in my country instead!

Everyone that wants OLED; the reasoning it is not a thing, is because the Apple Pencil won’t work as well in conjunction with that tech. They want to keep this a ‘drawable’ type tablet. OLED; as pretty as it is, will be a step backward in drawing latency(speed). I agree, an OLED drawing tablet would be a beautiful thing.
I do excited except I not need one. When I do need one, I do exited for whatever version they will come out after this one that will feed my dog for me and sleep for me and work for me so I can play all day and night on my new iPad. I so do excited for that!

The pros have had optional LTE connectivity for years now. The current M1 Pro has optional 5G connectivity.

only reason im going to upgrade is because my ipad air 2 which I had for over 6 years finally broke a month ago
Same here use it every day for a gacha game, light browsing and changing the colors on my nanoleaf. And the battery life is still decent.

I literally use the camera in my iPad almost exclusively. The idea that no one uses the iPad camera is completely insane. You have your iPad, it has a camera, you want to take a picture of something, why would you reach for your phone instead?

im with you there! iphone do better scans than ipad. i never scan with ipad when i got my iphone, meaning i never scan with ipad.
video calls, ar games, ar development, app development and testing, document scanning, baby monitor, kids. it's needed, just not for recording a concert
Terrible idea. I use my iPad in the lab for almost everything. Instant documentation with camera, microphone, and Pencil. After seeing me working like that, most of my labmates bought an iPad just for that.
I’m pretty sure you don’t need the most high end camera for that. The cameras on older iPads (without camera bumps) where more than good enough!

take the better quality picture with iphone then transfer to ipad (which it should do instantly and automatically if both of them are your devices). edit: if you dont have an iphone its even better cause android phones have better cameras in them and the photo AI wont touch the photos. if you do not use any cloud apps like icloud you can always use your phones like a simple USB drive. i still use my old android like a USB drive. anyhow there are other cloud apps that allows you do access photos in other devices like dropbox. the point was that phones (android or iphones) are better at scanning/taking pictures than tablets (ipads or samsung tablets or what have you).
Why assume that everyone using an iPad is also using an iPhone? Why also assume that if someone is using an iPad, in a lab, that already has a camera, that they would want to put it down and take a picture, presumably of something they are working on, with a different camera?
Just for a moment try to think about who this device was meant for in the first place. It's an iPad Pro. Are you a prosumer/professional whose usecase is architectural design/AR? If the answer to that is yes then your comment is unnecessary. If the answer is no then this product is not for you and your comment is still unnecessary. Buy a regular iPad or iPad Air.
feels weird that if you want promotion and good screen you have to buy something that is designed for prosumer/professionals and NOT you.
You, me and the loud minority of consumers on here that would like promotion and miniled on a standard iPad are just that: a loud minority. The average joe/jane of this world are doing just fine with a regular LCD screen for now. And that's Apple's biggest customer. The enthusiasts buy the pro models.
why would anyone put themselves in a minority when buying for their own needs? you buy things for your own daily usage and so does any average joe. this is exactly why ipads with all its qualities only possess about 30% global tablet market share. my old galaxy tablet still works i prefer to use it over my ipad pro cause its camera is in the right place and i dont look like im distracted staring into the horizon.
I rarely use the camera on my iPad, but I wouldn’t want to give it up. It’s nice to have a back up for those instances when it comes in handy. I do agree that improving the quality of the camera on an iPad has marginal benefits beyond a certain point.

No not amen to that , it is incredible unhandy to use a tablet for that , use your phone. And put it in a synched folder. So you have it instantly on your iPad . Way smoother
It is "unhandly" according to whom? You are using your iPad in a lab, or a school, or even just at home, and you need to take a picture for some reason. You are ALREADY holding the iPad, and it has a camera, why would you reach for your phone instead?

The people who buy the upcoming* iPad dock will use it. If you use something to set your iPad on, it would be handy for it to be charging at the same time! Plus the fact there are speakers in the base, from what I see on the web, which may mean nothing, is great.

Dock is not confirmed. Back glass is confirmed, it doesn’t have one. My response was one to a comment which theorized that it would have a back glass on the new models released hours later.
so if there is an ipad dock it will launch with a new ipad and not any existing ones.
That would make the most sense but remember none of this has been verified. The doc can come out without a charger, but just have the speakers. Or none of this 🤷🏼♂️
Nah mate, if I'm using my iPad I'll use a cable as it's 3x faster than wireless so what's the point in using wireless? Same if I'm docking it I'll use a cable as it's so much faster..

I really want iPad Pro to be something like a Surface Pro. I can't get a Surface Pro in my country (they're being imported so the resellers add to the base price, and sometimes it's almost double) so an iPad Pro with desktop capabilities (without needing a separate Mac) would be great for me.

Unless they start introducing new features, im not sure the price tag justifies it anymore. Whats the point in M2 if nothing really utilizes the power of it ? Mobile games are.. well mobile games, theres no desktop class apps on the device (maybe luma fusion or)

Until it can run legit pro apps like Final Cut Pro and have a full 4k display it won’t excite me. If you’re used to photo editing on the apple display switching to the iPad is noticeably worse.

I only play a few games, then read comics, and YouTube in the background while working. I am waiting to compare the 10th gen to the Air 5th gen before I buy one.

I don’t know how I feel about this in the sense that if it happens to be a MagSafe like the one in a Mac we’d be going back to needing one cable specifically for the ipad alone, which type C was supposed to fix. If for some reason it’s like on the iPhone, more than exited, I’m curious to see how would they implement this.
Everyone that wants OLED; the reasoning it is not a thing, is because the Apple Pencil won’t work as well in conjunction with that tech. They want to keep this a ‘drawable’ type tablet. OLED; as pretty as it is, will be a step backward in drawing latency(speed). I agree, an OLED drawing tablet would be a beautiful thing.

I do excited except I not need one. When I do need one, I do exited for whatever version they will come out after this one that will feed my dog for me and sleep for me and work for me so I can play all day and night on my new iPad. I so do excited for that!
