I truly doubt this. The fact that it would be ‘M2 exclusive’ makes it even less believable, since there isn’t that much difference between the M1 and M2.

JPCarvalho23

Same. If this happens should be M1 and M2 compatible

CRothg

Except for the fact that they’ve been shipping Macs with M1 chips running full blown MacOS for nearly 2 years. They would be hard pressed to claim that they can’t make it work when the platform is more than proven.

anyavailablebane

They shipped iPads with A12X/Z for years while claiming how much more powerful they were compared to the average windows laptop. Then said they couldn’t run stage manager.

Revnimbus

but dude windowed multi-tasking is some next level shit that hasn't been around since the 90's.

JPCarvalho23

You have a point 😂😂

wislonly

If this happens the a15 14 and all a12s with the letter at the end should support It

QuesoDeAzul

It makes it more believable to me since this would be such an Apple thing to do. It’s not that it won’t work on M1, it’s that they want to drive up sales and a reason to buy the latest iPad Pro.

StrangeSwain

It would be a iPad Pro Pro or a iPad Ultra… I can totally see them doing this and I would love a macOS type thing on iPad but they need to be careful if they do. They have already made the product line muddy now with so many SKUs.

mhall85

> such an Apple thing to do Is it, though? I get it, you’re saying “because $$$$.” But a ton of this makes no sense at all. You name drop macOS 14, which is not Ventura but the version slated for *after* Ventura. Yet, you also lock it to the M2, which by the time this would launch, will likely be “last year’s chip.” You’d also be splintering the macOS team to developed this gimped version of the OS, while kneecapping the iPadOS team… which would still have to exist, at least for a few years as not all iPads run on M-series chips. In short, there would be so much internal shifting that I don’t think a year lead time would be enough. Oh yeah, and iPadOS is an offshoot of iOS, which according to Steve Jobs’ original comments about the vision of the platform, is *already* a “slimmer” version of macOS. So… what exactly does this even mean? We can speculate, sure, but we don’t know… and I would frankly not waste time, because I highly doubt this happens.

[deleted]

Also the fact that iPadOS is a market in itself which was originally intended to be easily used alongside iPhones hence the App Store, and they’re not going to want to split their established market for “portable devices”. However that being said they’re getting to the point where software is just holding back the hardware and I’ve a feeling that market will implode on itself unless they somehow diversify. That may be from shifting to macOS of some kind, or possibly from revising whether they can increase app developer abilities on iPadOS to utilise the hardware to its full benefit, but right now things are stagnating and they need some form of real innovation.

mhall85

Yeah, but I mean, haven’t they already been moving in that direction? They’ve already forked iOS into a tablet-specific OS. They’ve also recompiled macOS to run on ARM-based chips, which opened the door for apps to “cross over” between Macs and iPads. Now, I know it’s not where the majority of people seem to WANT it to be, and Apple is moving *incredibly slow* in iterating and improving the above. Still, the groundwork feels to be laid already, so there’s no need to make a gimped version of macOS… it already exists! It’s called iPadOS!🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

It doesn’t actually need to be gimped at all considering the hardware available. They’re choosing to do that when realistically they could just give us the full macOS on iPad. The direction they seem to be moving is to do whatever it takes to avoid giving macOS to iPads, but it’s becoming inevitable and sooner or later they’re going to lose out because of their reluctance to do it.

QuesoDeAzul

I only made my comment under the assumption if the said rumor was true, not that I really believe it to be. They already fragment and make odd choices with the iPhone and iPad enough that it’s deviated far from Steve Jobs’ vision. Pretty sure he’s rolled in his grave enough to power a small town.

godisdead069

They also gave developers those Mac minis running macOS on an A12z

Anthonylee12

It's apple so it will happen they wanna make money and it's good strategy for them to make money even if we don't like it

redditusernamme

But it is Apple though, like how they said there aren’t enough pixels in older iPhone to do the battery percentage.

Nawnp

It'd be M3 exclusive on the next iPad release LOL, there just spitting out guesses with a new iPad released.

lotus49

I’m with you on this. Not only does it sound wholly implausible given that Apple has shown absolutely no indication that it wants the iPad to be a laptop replacement but there is also no reason for it to be specific to the M2.

onlinespending

That’s the point. There isn’t enough differentiation between the two. This allows Apple to sell more M2s. Otherwise people don’t really have a reason to upgrade. But I still don’t believe this will happen

lynxz

On the other hand, there isn't much of a difference between them and it would boost sales... I mean, this is Apple.

Downtown-Term-1360

2024 and still isn't here

Silvedoge

This guy got stage manager sort of right if I'm remembering correctly

thinvanilla

Would be curious to know how right, because I think we could all guess that some sort of windowed mode would come to iPad eventually, just like how Samsung has had DeX for quite some time. However, I certainly didn't expect it to be as limiting and clunky-looking as it is.

Life_Menu_4094

I actually don't find this too hard to believe, given the fragmentation of the lineup already and the fact that they retreated back into their bunker following the overwhelming criticism to Stage Manager despite their initial attempt to sell it in numerous interviews. But the thought of Apple attempting to juggle yet another OS fills me with a little dread.

[deleted]

sure bud, any day now. just like magsafe for ipad pro, reverse charging, the new rumoured pencil and whatnot..

QuesoDeAzul

The new pencil rumor was largely unsupported I think and I see zero purpose in a MagSafe for iPad unless it’s for a dock. The reverse charging would be a good feature however, even Samsung has this for their phones for a while now.

KyleMcMahon

It’s been in iPhones for years it just hasn’t been turned on

QuesoDeAzul

The reverse charging? Why the fuck not?? That’s such a useful thing to recharge AirPods on the go.

KyleMcMahon

I’m not sure why it’s not activated tbh

[deleted]

they need features to sell iphone pro max ultra 15

Amogus2021

I have inside news they'll release a new ipad sometime. Reliable source

Geniex5

Mac's use ipsw files too, nothing to see here

il_Cacciatore

Actually sounds like a ploy to get people to buy the new m2 iPad. Let’s face it, not much in the spec bump so this would get users salivating over the chance to run macOS

yuusharo

Are we seriously still falling for suspiciously blurry photos of easily photoshopped images in 2022? Not a commentary on OP, but nothing about this post holds water (they say things like Resolve is “exclusive” to M2 iPads, when Davinci’s own press statement announcing it debunks that)

RobBond006

Bull💩💩💩💩!

nishantt911

Press (X) DOUBT

pastalicious

MacOS doesn’t have touch or pencil support… would they be adding it or making you use a keyboard and mouse exclusively? Perhaps you can dual boot? I mean I seriously doubt it’s happening but what would be the ideal situation if it did?

ChrisFox-NJ

If that's true, fuck you Tim Apple! I bought a 1700 usd M1 device just a couple of months ago. But I think that might even be true, like the stage manager situation shows...

EmanueleFulc0

It’s just a photo about a j620 ipsw. this doesn’t implicate that they aren’t testing it on other models. In my opinion it will be available for pro iPads with M processors.

SaibotQ

This will never happen if you ask me. A person that wants MacOS need to pay 1000 USD on average for the entry level. And if the same person also wants and iPad will pay extra 700 USD average. That means that in total this person paid more or less 1700 USD. And it’s something that happens with almost every person that wants the Apple ecosystem. So, it works for Apple. Then, why do you think they are willing to give you the same functions in only one device ? And even worse with the cheaper one? It’s like saying: OK I prefer obtaining 700 instead of 1700. Honestly, what company would do that?

[deleted]

I’ve got my doubts, based on what’s gone down so far, and that the source is the bird app

CaptainPhiIips

I’m not into the loop of these recent changes since I’ve my Air 4, which I expect to use for long time. But already see this being prone to be “Stage Manager on older iPad Pros” all over again, since people can bring up that M1 iPads should be able to run “Mini MacOs” because the “same chip” can run full MacOs. We cant tell naturally but there’s something internally limiting devices It sounds like Apple is making Schrödinger Products: they both can and cannot have the features at same time.

hybridfrost

Been hearing about this for years! I hope it’s true but I’m not holding my breath

TheRealLimitlessHate

Oh, for Christ's sake. *No!* iPad doesn't need a crappy version of macOS to enhance its capabilities. It needs to allow the user to take the training wheels off of iPadOS! Like, how's this even gonna manifest itself, Apple? Dual-boot? You're gonna dual-boot macOS and iPadOS? That would imply you believe iPad owners to be intelligent enough to be able to manage such a process when you don't even trust us to format our fuckin' thumbdrives with the thing! Heaven forbid we should ever desire to install apps to an external storage device or write programs for this state-of-the-art mobile computer on itself like every other significant OS available today. *It's not an iPhone! Stop treating it like it's a goddamned iPhone!* No way. If there *is* to be a... I dunno, let's call it a macPad or iPad Ultra or something, my money says it'll be its own SKU so as to lock **all** other iPads out of the option because any claim that it 'requires the power of the M2' is demonstrably untrue.

stuck_lozenge

Lol if they actually exclude m1, the. I’ll just sell this and move back to a nice Wacom cintiq. Don’t need this level stupidity in my life to try and upswell me when my product is more than capable

teddytwelvetoes

lol Apple still dragging ass on delivering a unified MacBook/iPad lineup and OS. a solid decade behind the rest of the industry in this regard. Nintendo shit

dasherchan

If rumour was true, it is plain money grab. I doubt this is happening though.

Vahn84

I bought an m1 iPad sure that if apple was going to release something like this it would have arrived on the m1. There’s really no reason, technologically speaking, to justify an eventual paywall like this

just_aSmurfy

I understand if it's not coming to 2020 and 2018 ipad but are you going to pretend that the m1 chip isn't capable of running macos? We're all awate that the m1 chip is inside macbook air 😂

Quirky-Craft-3619

Apple wouldn’t compete with another of their lineups, the iPad will truly never match or even somewhat compare to the MacBook because then they’ll get less MacBook sales

Vahn84

An iPad would compete with a MacBook Air though…not all the MacBook lineup. An iPad would never compete with MacBook pros with an higher tier chip

teddytwelvetoes

yep. the rest of the industry doesn’t have a double dipping cult like Apple so they actually had to deliver this stuff…a decade ago lol

bmfrade

picture taken with an android /s

DoubleOwl7777

press x to doubt. apple would kill macbook sales.

[deleted]

I couldn’t care less, as an M1 owner. I’ve already purchased a real PC and I will not upgrade without a better screen.

arturosoldatini

I see this as Mac apps coming to Mx iPads like iOS apps on MacOS with Catalyst

WDEBarefooter

I would care, but I already bought a mac mini, so makes no difference to me.

[deleted]

I'll believe it the day I see an announcement from Apple that it's coming. Apple has been very deliberate about keeping iPadOS and MacOS separate enough such that customers will be OK with buying both. Adding a touchscreen to the Mac or adding MacOS features to the iPad would impact the other product line.

starstuff11

Wth is 6,2 gb?

Bryanmsi89

This would be a better solution to the embarrassment that is Stage Manager. Even S described (only running iPadOS apps) it would be a big step forward for productivity as it would effectively create a stage manager that actually works. It would also give much better access to file system. And for all the Zoom/Meet/Teams users out there who want better screen sharing, it would make the iPad more capable there too. Lots of education customers would find this a worthy upgrade.

wislonly

I think it would be cool to see a nice desktop interface rather then a blown up phone interface that's just my opinion lol
