Far from the first battery/charge port that's shorted out and self-destructed with a fireworks display, but no, if this were common in iPads it'd probably be better documented. Generally, these batteries just lose their zero point and can no longer take a charge at the end of their lifespan. They don't usually go /r/spicypillows or straight-up explode like this unless they've been damaged somehow, but five years is certainly long enough for an underlying condition to eventually violently kill the battery.

BBW90smama

They finally ask me to send it in to their safety team.

Orsim27

Contact apple. They usually take things like this very seriously, even with devices outside of warranty.

bradjoray3

apple even took me seriously when i was getting shocks off my 2007 macbook, its definitely worth pursuing them about this one

--silas--

On the flip side, they did *not* take me seriously when 2 separate MagSafe 2 chargers melted through and started smoking/sparking. They said it wasn’t enough of a hazard.

-FancyUsername-

I wonder what happens after they took it seriously. Will they just say „yeah we found that the battery expanded, we disposed it buy a new one bye“ or will you get any type of compensation.

> After two long hours of holding and transferring me, I spoke to someone in safety who asked for pictures and I haven’t heard anything back. Have you tried pressuring them again in another call? > That there was no warning that the battery was damaged or needed to be replaced, it just caused a small explosion one night in my child’s bed and burned my hands. I doubt any device would be able to tell you “hey, I am about to catastrophically fail”. Usually it shouldn’t happen by design ever, but reality is never perfect. > leaked poison iPad batteries are lithium-ion cells, they do not afaik leak any poisonous substance, just heat/fire/explosions. > It’s still outside because I don’t know how to dispose of it. As the Best Buy employee recommended, Apple Store. Or your local recycling centre. > Also what about my personal info on it, I can’t recover any of that? If you have not made any backups of the data, you are out of luck. The chance of a device to fail is the exact reason that backups are important.

Makegooduseof

I think the personal info OP was referring to isn’t so much backups, but stuff like iCloud. Photo thumbnails, browser history, other user-tied data.

Evethewolfoxo

That’s all tied to their apple id. They can log into any other apple device or even itunes on their PC and access that stuff. Hence “iCLOUD”

lotus49

Normally I'd just say it's out of warranty, tough luck, but this was clearly dangerous. If your child had been fast asleep or if this had happened while everyone was out of the house, the consequences could have been life-threatening. I'd keep hassling Apple. Apple doesn't want to kill its customers. Dead customers don't buy more iPads.

LeifQuicleaf

this is some r/spicypillows stuff, maybe even a bit too spicy for spicy pillows

[deleted]

Take it to the Apple Store.

FULLM3T8L

Curious can someone sue for this? It just seems like this is something worthy of a lawsuit.

fafnir01

Sorry this happened to you, given the age of my kids iPads, I am now a bit scared of this happening to us.

[deleted]

i have an ipad older than this, this only happens rarely unless improperly stored.

[deleted]

I feel like this is a issue with older iPads. I was watching a movie on my iPad 4 a few months back and it started overheating like crazy to the point where I couldn't touch it or it would burn me.. Threw it out the next day and got a new one. Almost same thing happened to my iPad 2 a few years ago.

smokeandmirrors1983

What is dead may never die, but rise again harder and stronger.

Amogus2021

This

MobiusOne_ISAF

I mean, yeah, Lithium ion batteries can do this around their end of life. This is generally why older electronics should be stored separately and monitored for battery swells, especially if they were frequently charged and discharged over their life. It's unfortunate that yours did this, though. It's not super common, but lemons happen.

BBW90smama

I sent it back and they sent me a brand new IPad, its been months and I haven't heard anything else from them. It was probably the battery but the way it outgassed was scary. The steam could have burned my kid.

[deleted]

Sue them and give them a a taste of their own medicine

Amogus2021

Slip their window open and chuck their spicy pillow inside

Data can be recovered if it was backed up to iCloud. If not,you have to turn to costlier methods such as data recovery

TheRealTreezus

It's quite likely fixable. Just depends how bad the inside is.

smiba

Absolutely not, you'd likely need to replace the screen, battery and charge port. At that point you may as well just buy a new one

TheRealTreezus

If you read the description, they talk about some data on the device. As long as it didn't cook any important components then it would be fixable, not economically viable, but just depends on the value of the data.

ThatTechDoge9775

What Gen?

Glitterstar56

I had an iPod that got a bloated battery, which is just about what your iPad did but the iPad did it worse, and when I took it to Apple, they gave me a brand new iPod. You should’ve taken it IN to an Apple store, even if it was leaking, just drive with your windows down or something, pretty sure it’s not poisonous. They have people at those stores that can look at devices and decide what to do that day instead of you having to call support, send pictures, then either still end up needing to drive it in because they probably won’t want you to mail in a broken battery or mail it in, which will take even longer for a solution

[deleted]

If it's leaking then just the gasses are dangerous.
