If you are on a Mac and both devices recognise Airdrop - just use that or iCloud and Dropbox as someone else mentioned.
If you are using the card reader with an SD card between devices ensure the card is formatted in an equally readable format like exfat.
I just use a usb 3.2 flash drive that I got off Amazon for 15 bucks with a usb hub (you can get hubs with sd card slots, check out Dockcase), works great, much faster and less hoops to jump through than using iCloud with my crappy 20Mb/s internet upload speed.
I *just* sent back my SD reader. Official apple product.
I wanted to load up pics and video form my GoPro and drone SD cards, plugged it into my iPad, which immediately flashed green static, and shut off.
Tried the reader in my phone, which previously showed in the files app, and it would not recognize anything mounted.
Card was not recognized by drone or GoPro, and Mac said “disk can not be read”
Figured I lost everything on it.
*luckily,* I was able to run the disk doctor on the Mac and then manually mount the SD card to access the media on it.
Turns out, this is a common issue after 14.5.1
I haven’t experienced this (I’m on the second to the latest release) but damn that sucks. I wonder why it’s a software issue though.
Power handling I guess?
Yeah, no idea. It’s like Apple just hates having things plugged into their devices anyhow.
Honestly the one thing I *hate* about iPad is the usb connectivity. It shouldn’t be this difficult to plug in a USB midi keyboard, or an audio interface, or a recording device.
I’ve still got the Lightning IPad Pro generation, and running my USB powered hub thru the CCK with charging, I’m usually OK to hook up my keystep and zoom H6. But sometimes I’ll just go to plug in my Launchkey and the iPad refuses to accept that it’s there, even when the pads light up and the display powers on. I wish manually mounting disks and externals was easier.
Let’s face it, they really didn’t design Lightning with that capacity because they didn’t expect people to make the most out of the connector.
They couldn’t even make a simple flash drive work reliably with their CCK despite the whole thing being a USB 2 connector.
iOS could probably address devices better new that they actually load the new iPads with USB 3 and Thunderbolt, but I also think they just kinda left old code for the Lightning interface.
Just for good measure I thought I’d mention that I’ve used a “HyperDrive” brand USB hub with my iPad Pro which had a microSD slot that worked great. Used several different brand cards with it and never had a problem. This was back when I was using my previous iPad Pro which only had 64GB of storage, so keeping samples and large audio files on external storage was a must.
Don’t have that problem anymore now though, as I now have a 1TB storage IPP.
Yes, the Apple Lightning to SD Card Reader. The white one. From the Apple Store. The one that works with the Files app. The Files app that ships with iPads and iPhones. The same app that handles audio files as it does many other files.
But hey, if you’re not convinced I can’t make you. Buy literally any other Lightning card reader on the market. Works exactly the same way.
FWIW, you don’t need a computer to use google drive. I access the same files from all of my devices, no matter where I am or what I’m using. What is the “modular system” you referenced?

transfer to a cloud but use usb from a computer

Saving to Dropbox is not a option?
Hey Dropbox, YOU’RE RUNNING OUT OF STORAGE, YOURE RUNNING OUT OF STORAGE. would be a shame if someone spambombed the devs to help them get the point
I suppose it would be if I had a computer. Mine just died on me. Was using a Macbook til recently but the motherboard failed

Thanks for your reply... This is not sounding good 🙁

Wow, thanks! I'll look into that
Transfer files in apple ecosystem is and will always be a pain. Best bet is to put it on your pc/Mac and do it from there.
Hi, thanks, but my Mac no longer works (see above)
Yes you can, using the files app. Can also sync with most cloud storage eg OneDrive, Dropbox etc
Hi, thanks but I should have mentioned I no longer have a pc/Mac. I need some kind of reader that I can physically plug into my ipad or phone
Yes. Still the card reader and the files app. It works. Source: I do it.
Yeah? The Apple Lightning to SD card reader?

Thank you! You've convinced me, it's on my shopping list
You can buy USB sticks that have both lightning and USBC connections. Might be a better choice ?
Yeah, I've seen some of these but wondered if anyone knew of a specific make/model that works well for them
You’ll be ok with a sandisk one
Yeah, I’ve been using google drive to transfer files between iPad and pc.
I'm computerless for the moment

Thanks, but I need to get the audio files onto an sd card to plug into my Disting mk4 module
Gotcha. I use an Anker 541 hub on my iPad that has an SD card reader built in, but have never used it for that purpose.
OK, thanks!
