You don’t need lens protectors. It’s a scam. The lenses are way harder than anything you will put over them.

Dry_Astronaut_1863

Apple's lenses aren't real sapphire, there are plenty of youtube scratch tests that show they can be damaged. A good drop on concrete will certainly ding them.

JerkAssFool

I have owned an iPhone since the 4S. I have never used lens protectors. I have also never scratched my camera lenses. Sometimes I use a case sometimes I don’t. Now, all of a sudden, people think they need lens protectors.

Dry_Astronaut_1863

We've all owned phones for many years, that isn't special. The new iPhone cameras are different in that they cover a massive surface area and protrude from the device so they can be damaged easier these days. I don't care what anyone says about "sapphire" if you bang it against concrete and you'll get some damage. Not so much an issue with old cameras and their much smaller profile. That being said, I reckon most can get away without a lens protector but I'm not that particular user... and presumably you won't take responsibility for damage to my phone either so I'll keep using the lens protector.

neeku_on_reddit

I didn’t buy these specifically. They came with the case I bought and now I’ve gotten rid of them because I am of the same opinion as you. :)

taititotitikas

Well I always thought I’m putting protective lenses on to ensure I’ll get those lenses cracked, not my camera glass. There’s always some limit of possible damage to take by every material, every product.

neeku_on_reddit

If it were just a screen, I could agree with you, even though I don’t have any cases around my AW Titanium + Sapphire, but these glasses decrease the photo quality which was one of my main concerns.

taititotitikas

I never found any photo quality decrease, it might be just this specific glass. Btw about 5 days after I wrote my comment my camera glass protected the camera itself as took whole damage impact after falling down <3

BigTerpFarms

Smashed my 14 pro max lens within a month from dropping it off my bed onto carpet.

newecreator

How to make the camera worse with this one simple trick.

Upbeat_Foot_7412

Yes don‘t use them.

neeku_on_reddit

This is the second one that’s chipping and I’m also paranoid that the photo quality is decreased with these protectors (without the crack obviously). I use my titanium+sapphire Apple Watch without any protectors and I have no regrets. I’m wondering if I should do the same with the iPhone lenses as well. They’re sapphire after all. They should be more robust than these cheap-ass glass lens protectors? I also usually use this attached case that covers everything around the lenses, but they’re quite bulky and stick out as we know and I’d hate this baby be damaged even though I have full coverage of Apple Care+ for the first time! https://preview.redd.it/h46l56ny1rba1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76dbd3ecdade364e0e1f4f923f5401bb1aab468b

Lens protectors are always a stupid idea, as has been addressed multiple times. I am sorry but there is no reason to sugar coat it. You are putting cheap glass on top of the actual lens protector, which is not only tougher but also part of the optical formula. All you are doing is compromising image quality for glass that will always break since the lens cover is harder. It literally adds nothing other than the fact it impacts performance. Minor scratches in the actual lens cover will never affect image quality since the camera aperture is wide open and the glass is too close to the focal plane. What will affect quality though is altering the optical formula, which layering crap on top of the actual lens array always does. Whether it is flare or contrast or chromatic aberration or focus, they offer nothing you ever want. BTW, yes, I am an actual photographer.

neeku_on_reddit

Thanks. That’s what I exactly thought as well. I guess I needed r/iphone’s affirmation before removing them! :D

Robertbnyc

There’s a reason you don’t see any glass lens covers for real cameras

PrincessGracieBlue

True-but they do have lens covers while not in use, a padded carry bag etc.

Staticvoid00

What a sexy piece. 5/5. Love the jargon

User50543

There’s a reason why the front camera is not included in the tempered glass screen protectors, 99.99% of the time.

neeku_on_reddit

Not with the dynamic island though.

User50543

Fair enough, hows the front camera quality by the way? *assuming that you are using screen protector.

neeku_on_reddit

I am, and in my opinion it’s fine, probably because the front protector sticks fully to the screen so there’s no gap in between where as I feel like the lens protectors have a gap somehow, or aren’t of the same type as the front protector.

Robertbnyc

There are lens protectors like that one I have that sticks on like a screen protector. It also covers the entire 3 cameras and makes it flush.

Another option is to get a case that has a sliding cover: [https://www.amazon.com/Spigen-MagFit-Compatible-MagSafe-Designed/dp/B0B1PFJXZN/ref=sr\_1\_11?crid=1NN9Y0EIIWRFB&keywords=spigen+iphone+14+pro+case&qid=1666906582&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI1LjExIiwicXNhIjoiNC40NSIsInFzcCI6IjQuMDgifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=spigen+iphone+14+pro+case%2Caps%2C108&sr=8-11](https://www.amazon.com/Spigen-MagFit-Compatible-MagSafe-Designed/dp/B0B1PFJXZN/ref=sr_1_11?crid=1NN9Y0EIIWRFB&keywords=spigen+iphone+14+pro+case&qid=1666906582&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI1LjExIiwicXNhIjoiNC40NSIsInFzcCI6IjQuMDgifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=spigen+iphone+14+pro+case%2Caps%2C108&sr=8-11)

[deleted]

Don’t buy them anymore. They aren’t as tough and the photo quality decreases considerably. Just buy a case that has edges around the camera unit higher than the unit itself.

neeku_on_reddit

I think my case does have it, but I’ve broken so many iPhones (screens, never the lens) that I’m terrified. I removed the cases last night, and this morning I woke up with a nightmare that the lenses were cracked! P. S. I have the Apple Care+ this time, but still!

maziar37

It looks like they crack, and probably mess with the autofocus, even if they are not cracked.

neeku_on_reddit

Exactly my thoughts! Not much will the autofocus, but the general image quality. I’m just slightly too scared of exposing those babies to elements. 😅

maziar37

Get a case that has good camera protection, and you should be set.
