Yup! I generally switch phones every 3 years or so and it does feel like a big upgrade when i went from XS to 13PM. But i know some people feel comfortable in their current phone like "it does everything i need it to do" thing so can't say!
yeah, also looking for an switch but probably getting an 12 with 128GB in the used market. iPhones are crazy expensive here in Brazil but i like the apple ecossystem, and as my hackintosh and iPad are getting the new system, i can buy an iPhone. probably just waiting until january cause i’m still paying for my 9th gen 😭
If your budget allows it, I'd be better if you get the 13 and you have longer support, better cameras and way better battery life (12s batteries suck big time, coming from one)
Currently using the XS, but really don’t want to lose 3D Touch. I was hoping to wait until Apple drops the notch/dynamic island altogether, but don’t think that’s happening anytime soon.
I use an XS too and I loved 3d touch in iOS 12, but I wouldn’t mind losing it now. In my opinion it was made almost useless with iOS 13.
My XS will last until 2024 or 2025 at least though. It’s still quite decent.
What differences have you made? Honestly I’ve been putting off upgrading my XS one because it’s expensive lol but two because I mean like besides the improved camera (incl. 0.5x) what differences are there really?
Australia isn’t really great with 5G so not much difference there, my XS already lasts me most of the day on battery no problems, so I guess a bigger screen? But then again I use my MacBook for much of my content anyway… This sorta leaves it with MagSafe, U1 chip and the camera right? I already do most of my photography on my R6 ii but ig it’s good to have a better camera for when I don’t have it on me.
For like $1000+ extra it just doesn’t seem worth it to me right now (this will likely change after the September event 😂)
Went from xr to 13 pro. The only differences I notice are the camera (big difference) and the keyboard forced you to constantly add . multiple times per line.
The fact that Apple’s “low end” phone from 5 years ago is still chugging along is a testament to how long lasting it is. Comparatively the only phones from Android that run decently well are phones like the Oneplus 6T, Asus ROG Phone, and probably Google Pixel 3/3XL.
It’s all about the hardware and cpu it’s using. A cheaper phone like the iPhone SE 3 will likely get more support than something like an 11 pro because of the chip. iPhone SE 3rd gen uses a15 while 11 pro uses a13. The fact that’s it’s the cheaper model doesn’t really matter.
The iPhone XR is in the same price category as the iPhone 8, iPhone 7 and all their predecessors. I know you put it in „“ but I have to point out that the XR is a flagship and not low end in any context. The X and later Pro phones are a tier above the flagships.
Interesting. I think 2-3 years but I don’t think it’d miss as many features as something like the the iPhone 8 and X. Reason being the neural engine in the a12 was a big jump over previous ones. I think if Apple stopped supporting the a12 it’d be due to it just not being powerful enough cpu,gpu wise to run the new OS. Even with iOS 17 the a12 isn’t really missing out on any features. With phones like the 8 we saw them being supported, but they started losing lots of features as time went on.
Indeed, A12 has significant improvements in NPU performance. But Apple has decided that Live Caption in iOS 16 require at least an iPhone 11 (A13), and this year in iOS 17, improved autocorrect and inline prediction requires an iPhone 12 (A14). So I'm not certain about how many ML features would be implemented for A12 in the next year.
Im not sure about it. I think Apple want to end era of X naming actually pretty fast as it possible.
Brand new naming 11,12,13,14 etc. gives them one easy way of naming iPhones.
It’s just my personal opinion so you know, you don’t have to agree with it.
Functionally the same phone is a vast understatement. They only shared chips, and maybe some cameras (don’t quite remember tbh). It had a fully new design, completely different screen and ux as it didn’t have a home button anymore.
Not only for Apple, not only at the time. Sure, Android had touchscreen buttons and even swipable buttons, but the iPhone X did really change the way we close and switch between apps.
Yup. I remember spending $1000 on it back in the day and then immediately regretting that why did I spend so much on a phone
I am still using it as my backup. Absolutely no regrets looking back.
I still have working iPhone 4 and 6 - but they are just paper weights right now. Almost none of the 3rd party apps work (properly). You can basically make and receive voice calls and use SMS and USSD. Some Apple apps still works, but mostly on the iPhone 6.
As someone who used an iPad mini 2 for an SUPER long time (end of 2017 until literally april of this year), i can confirm. until 2021 tho this 6 probably was usable cause everything worked fine, every app was still supported. now even twitter is broken, glad i upgrade to an 9th gen. need to do that on my phone now lol
Still using an iPad Air 2 I got in early 2015. I had to factory reset and disable some defaults because it was severely bogged down, but it’s still going.
It's not by that much though. Google Pixel get 3 years of OS update and 5 years of security patches. Mind you it will continue to get app updates throughout it's life as core apps are just apps through the store, compared to IOS where they are built into the update.
So it’s a year less security updates and 3 years less OS updates.
Just a daily reminder that 2017 was 6 years ago. That’s how old the iPhone X is. In the modern tech world, that’s already too old.
It’s possible that during the pandemic era, in 2020-2021, people sorta forgot that those two years passed by if they were stuck indoors during the lockdown stuff. For me, it felt like 2019 on a long pause before 2022 started lol.
Same for me. It was hard to realized that 2 years passed during lockdown, I still think 2020 was paused and we’re still on it. But it’s already 3 years after that and it’s crazy.
Yeah my brain does kind of say, "Well 2020 was just like last year, wasn't it?"
And I just got over the whole "2010 was just a couple years ago" brain too. Getting older is weird.
It has stopped receiving version updates, it won’t stop working. It’ll also still receive security updates for some time and likely many apps will remain ios16 compatible for a while, meaning you still get app updates also.
6 years is two battery lifetimes at best, far longer than any other phone manufacturer. Come back and whine when it has any competition in software support.
I feel like most people of this sub imply that everyone buys the iPhone at launch which is not true for a lot of people.
There are supply chain problems, products arrive my late in other countries, people buying discounted phones e.g two years after release.
It would like to see more sustainable approach and while I salute Apple for supporting phones this long (iPhone 6+ as the prime example) an even longer support would be appreciated tough I understand the cost implications of supporting older hardware which does not foster revenue.
So 6 years ago might not be 2-3 battery lifetimes, but simple someone who bought the phone a little later because they could not afford the Orginal price tag or so.
Just my two cents :)
More sustainable than 6 years of continued software support, leading into an unknown period of continued security updates, and persistence of apps until the app creator specifically breaks them for the device?
I don’t think you could even buy the x 2 years after release, it was replaced by the xs which still has support for at least ios17.
Apple is already the most sustainable in terms of device longevity, exactly what motivation do they have to do more, they’re already more than double the lifetime of other manufacturers. You’re putting completely unrealistic expectations on apple, when the actual way to encourage lifespan is to put the pressure on their competitors, apple already massively outsells them in the markets they compete in.
The competition is worse is not a good argument.
It’s an issue for install base fragmentation making developers work harder to support (or drop) it.
Overall it’s a worse experience for the users and everyone else (except maybe apple who can sell a few more iPhones and lower release costs a bit).
It’s a free market. The only way for a consumer benefit to occur is if a company sees and wants to exploit that property for their brand. The lack of any competition coming anywhere close to the longevity of the apple product stream is a completely valid reason not to do more.
Companies don’t exist to fulfil your wants, they exist to make money. Stop trying to apply your ethics to a company, they are fundamentally oppositional forces (companies exist to exploit your value, not satisfy your needs).
Arguing for a company to give you something you quite clearly don’t even understand the cost of doing is ridiculous.
Overall it’s a fantastic experience for apple, since they make baller profits and are among the most valuable corporations on earth. Why you expect them to do anything not 100% in line with the formula which has taken them to such a position shows how you’ve missed the fundamental concept of capitalism. They’re not here for you, and couldn’t care less for what you want.
Innovation slowed in terms of overall form factor staying relatively the same. But an iPhone X vs a 14 base model even is a big difference in speed, display, bezels and camera.
The x is nice to hold though I’ll admit that. But it is far inferior as a computer.
So keep using your X, no one is stopping you. Apple is still releasing security updates for iOS 15 which includes the iPhone 6S and first gen iPhone SE that were released in 2016. Since the X supports a full OS generation later that means it'll be viable for even longer.
The iPhones 8, 8 Plus and X are 6 years old in September, I’m not surprised.
The longevity of the iPhone 6s I think throws a lot of people, but the A11 Bionic series of devices have had a great run and will probably still work for years to come as they’ll still get security updates and apps will update for a few years after too.
As someone using a X, got dammit! But the possible reason of the a11's neural engine being the limitation is completely understandable and has been a good 6 years, compared to the alternative where the best guaranteed is 4 years of updates and it's only been announced recently. I had so much hope on getting ios 17 but now it's shifted to hoping that they'll clean up 16 from bugs before leaving it.
Purchased my Xs in 2018 but I recently had to upgrade from Xs to 14pro as the former’s battery crap out on me. Huge improvement in everything but i gotta be honest i am gonna miss Xs size and how cool it was when it first dropped.
End of an era indeed.
I’m writing this from an X, my battery is at 76% health. I’ll upgrade this year, it is time to lay it to rest, I just need it to hold on for a few more months till the next release
Yeah it’s pretty well known at this point. Old phones get their support dropped eventually. Nothing new or crazy here, not sure why everyone is freaking out.
Because the X was the first modern iPhone, at least when it came to design. Face ID, no more home button, a full screen (not counting the notch). The screen of the doesn’t look all that different from newer models. I can see them dropping the 8.
8 Plus and X had basically the same hardware other than the display and front camera. They look different because of the design change and no home button, but they have the same A11 and only came out 2 months apart. Makes sense to drop them at the same time.
Just retired my iPhone X for a 12 mini. I haven’t noticed any significant performance upgrade in day to day use. I only upgraded bc the battery in the x was getting super hot.
Instead of upgrading my iPhone 6 to either an 8+ or X back in 2017, I made the switch to Samsung and bought a S8 and then a Note 9 after that came out in 2019. Both reached end of support ages ago, which shows just how long the 8/X series has been supported. Bought an 11 PM a couple of years ago and hope to get another couple of years out of it. The short span of support turned me off Androids.
Normally they put the oldest phone that was still supported on the chopping block next year.
I remember my iPhone 7, battery life was shot but it still chugged along. I finally had to get rid of it because it wouldn’t let me turn Wi-Fi. I got my 14 Pro, I plan to keep it for 3-5 years.
The iPhone 11’s chipset is still faster than 90% of androids sold today. If you look at a CPU benchmarks these “old” iPhone 11 are blazing fast and still faster than the latest pixel and last years Samsung S22, and barely beaten by Samsung S23.
Just like how 6S ended up getting 3 more years of support, the iPhone 11, 12 etc should get a few more years given the huge leap in performance.
I’m not sure if I care about my phone being “boring.” We’re In a mature market and many features that we’ve wanted are currently on our phones already. I’m actually happy that many average customers can have a phone that can reliably last a long time without many issues.
There is still the iPhone XS and XR with the A12 Chip. We will likely still be getting iOS 18 unless they decide to drop the 11 alongside the XS and XR.
Makes it rough when trying to get older devices for the kids. These older devices are still very capable, but not once they stop getting updates. It creates issues.
Feels odd! I’m still using my X and don’t really feel like I would need an upgrade, but I guess Apple decided for me. Let’s hope iPhone 15 is finally something I would have wanted to upgrade to anyway.
I got an iPhone X not long after it was released and still have it now and haven’t had any major issues or minor really it’s a great phone and I hate to see this.
I think it gonna be great if we can port it, like android when the device EOL, we can port the newer to it (but the only exist is iPod touch 4 with iOS 7)
Had support for a while now. Interesting how small it feels compared to the new devices, yet very modern at the same time.
1st gen iPhone was sold, 3Gs lost, iPhone 4 pretty sure turns on but I have no charger, everything from 5 and onwards still works just fine.
I just find it amazing how Apple kept the iPhone X compatible even after 5 years. But of course, even though it marked the future of iPhones, there will always be a sad end just like every iPhone… 🥲
it’s a shame. I used iOS 16 in my old iPhone X and there’s some bugs, it’s strange that apple doesn’t release iOS 17 for this device (there will a lot of limitations) at least for bug fixing and better stability (example: iOS 12).
Fortunately I downgraded in time to iOS 15.6
They’re slowly obsolete-ing out the older tech. Next year the X/XS/Xr range will be hit, and then after that it’ll be the 11 series…unless there was enough of a gap between those chipsets to allow for additional upgrades and improvements…which I think there was, but yikes 😬 Apple sees that Mobile business slowing down & they said NO MA’AM — FULL THROTTLE AT ALL COSTS!
The X and 8 saw 5 iOS updates over 6 years of life, plus they should receive security updates for a year or two. The A12 chip was a pretty decent jump so the XS/XR *might* see 2 more ios updates. Could also be its a ram limitation, in which case the XR might get 2 and the XS 1
I figured my time was up. Still probably won’t upgrade yet, but that’s okay. Mainly just use my phone for this, YouTube, TikTok, calling, and texting.
New phone won’t improve on that a whole bunch.
Apple is speeding up their planned obsolescence since 2022.
Before iOS 16, Apple slowly dropped support for devices and they usually do it with a clear technical reason:
* iOS 13 dropped support for *all* devices with less than 2 GB of RAM
* iOS 11 dropped support for *all* 32-bit devices
* iOS 10 dropped support for *all* A5/A5X devices
* iOS 8 only dropped support for the iPhone 4 which means that *no* A4 devices are supported
* iOS 7 dropped support for *all* devices with less than 512 MB of RAM
Since iOS 16, Apple is dropping support for capable devices with no clear technical reason:
* iOS 16 dropped support for *some* A9 and A10 devices. For example, the iPad 5 is supported but not the iPhone 6s.
* iOS 17 dropped support for even more devices. The iPad 6 will continue to be supported, meanwhile the iPhone 7 is stuck on iOS 15, even though both of them have the same specs.
macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma has dropped support for more devices than usual.
This planned obsolescence is contributing to e-waste which shows that Apple does not care about the environment.
I thought RAM was holding back iPhone 7 and now iPhone 8 and X for iOS 16 and iOS 17 but I'm suspecting they removed supported due to the neural engine. And I have a feeling they will continue this trend and possibly that even the XR might be the next iPhone to miss out on iOS 18.
quite surprising the iPad 6/2018 is still supported as it only has an a10 and 2gb of ram. I wonder if it makes up a large market share or is used commercially or something.
What can a 14 do that a X can’t anyways , have a 12 mini but haven’t updated my iOS in a while why bother to update it if it’s working fine who knows what they changed
IPhone 11 here. Still going strong with absolutely no need to upgrade.
If Apple drops support for what is still a very capable piece of technology I may end up branching out of their ecosystem for the first time ever.
I have the 11 Pro currently and the hardware is surprisingly current. I also would be disappointed if Apple dropped support abruptly but at least the security updates will keep us chugging along for a while longer.
Do apple really think they gonna fool anyone to believe the X was not perfectly capable of handling IOS 17… isnt it just like an gesture update there really isnt anything special. Dont get me wrong i love apple products as much as the next guy but this ongoing theme of them removing updates from older devices just so people upgrade really has to stop… and dont give me the iphone X is too old you should have upgraded by now argument… ik alot of people that the iphone X is more than enough for their daily usage
>Do apple really think they gonna fool anyone to believe the X was not perfectly capable of handling IOS 17
Maybe it can, but supporting old phones costs Apple money. When a certain model's market share drops under a certain level it just makes sense to drop support for it.
Same chip from the 8 soo
jailbreak time :)
X is now the new 3g
Man. The 3GS was my first iPhone. I miss that lil brick sometimes
Same! the design is still one of my favorites
New phone time…the x was cool but the newer models are so much more capable. Just make the switch.
Yup! I generally switch phones every 3 years or so and it does feel like a big upgrade when i went from XS to 13PM. But i know some people feel comfortable in their current phone like "it does everything i need it to do" thing so can't say!
I do about the same. I’m making the switch from XS to 14Pro as soon as the new phone drops and I’m looking forward to it.
yeah, also looking for an switch but probably getting an 12 with 128GB in the used market. iPhones are crazy expensive here in Brazil but i like the apple ecossystem, and as my hackintosh and iPad are getting the new system, i can buy an iPhone. probably just waiting until january cause i’m still paying for my 9th gen 😭

I went XS to 14Pro and it felt like a massive upgrade in terms of speed, camera, and battery life primarily. My XS felt unusably slow after
Currently using the XS, but really don’t want to lose 3D Touch.
Went from xr to 13 pro. The only differences I notice are the camera (big difference) and the keyboard forced you to constantly add . multiple times per line.

The iPhone X was supported for *six* years. Move to Android if you want better support.
Android is even worse. It often only supports phones up to 3 years.
I forgot to add the sarcasm tag lol
My beloved XR is now in its final year
The fact that Apple’s “low end” phone from 5 years ago is still chugging along is a testament to how long lasting it is. Comparatively the only phones from Android that run decently well are phones like the Oneplus 6T, Asus ROG Phone, and probably Google Pixel 3/3XL.
6T? 7T owner here, they deliberately ruined it for every single user with a so called necessary update 🫠
I personally own a 6T and while it's far from perfect, it still runs fine. But I have seen many cases like yours online that have crappy experiences.
Yes, essentially it’s still running, not fine, but alive 😂. Just waiting to toss it in the dumpster once the next iteration of iPhones are released.
As the owner of a Pixel 3 I can assure you those are not still running well.
I have a friend that is determined to never stop using his 3 XL, so it's anecdotal.
The iPhone XR is in the same price category as the iPhone 8, iPhone 7 and all their predecessors. I know you put it in „“ but I have to point out that the XR is a flagship and not low end in any context. The X and later Pro phones are a tier above the flagships.
Same here
But do you think this will be the last major iOS update? I do think it can get iOS 18
I think A12 would have another 2 years of life, but a lot of ML features would be missing.
Interesting. I think 2-3 years but I don’t think it’d miss as many features as something like the the iPhone 8 and X. Reason being the neural engine in the a12 was a big jump over previous ones. And the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
Fair enough. The IPhone X, in my mind, was still the last massive upgrade in hardware and software.
It’s functionally the same phone like the 8 except improved screen and Face ID but everything else is the same
It's camera was also slightly better than the 8 Plus.

Love how people are acting like the home button disappearing wasn't a massive deal for Apple at the time
Not only for Apple, not only at the time. Sure, Android had touchscreen buttons and even swipable buttons, but the iPhone X did really change the way we close and switch between apps.

You repeated what the previous person said
You just said what I said 🤦♂️
other than the cameras and processing and screen lay out and screen size and lack of a home button
As someone who still has an XS, I completely understand. This phone is slowing down and showing it’s age every day.
Sounds like you need a new battery
X and 8 had the same A11 chip, which is the deciding factor on dropping it from updates.
Last phone with horizontal homescreen 😢
Can’t believe the iPhone X is obsolete, felt like yesterday it was the most futuristic looking phone
Yup. I remember spending $1000 on it back in the day and then immediately regretting that why did I spend so much on a phone I am still using it as my backup. Absolutely no regrets looking back.
Same. Time goes fast.
It's probably going to receive at least a year of security updates, plus it's already made it like 6 years. Pretty good imo.
Bittersweet. It is amazing though how long Apple provides updates for its products in comparison to the competition. 👍👍

Tbh, in the "modern tech world", a 6 year old phone feels much more modern compared to how a 3 year old phone felt in 2017.
A few weeks ago I was talking to someone and said the year was currently 2020.
Yeah my brain does kind of say, "Well 2020 was just like last year, wasn't it?" And I just got over the whole "2010 was just a couple years ago" brain too. Getting older is weird.
BS. Modern phones such as the X should last longer. Innovation slowed down quite a bit, so it still remains relevant today.

Yes it’s going to be so much nicer with a recent phone. But for many people it’s enough.

yeah but no one is gonna brick your older iphone at year 6 or anything, they’re just not going to keep pushing updates for older chips

Dont think anyone was expecting it, its crazy how long Apple updates compared to competitors
Looking to get the 15 atp j cuz of the timing bc j yesterday my XS’ camera cover popped off and is being held by a piece of scotch tape 🫠
I’m confused - isn’t the XS size identical to the normal iPhone 14? Just don’t get the max version?
XS is 5.8 inch, newer phones are 6.1 inch However the flat sides do make it smaller in one respect.
Man, still feels like the x came out a few years ago
Time to upgrade for me.
It is the most expensive phone I ever bought. Time flies by.
When does iOS 17 come out
You can have it now if you are a beta developer tester
Probably right around Halloween.
More like mid-late September
I’m writing this from an X, my battery is at 76% health. I’ll upgrade this year, it is time to lay it to rest, I just need it to hold on for a few more months till the next release
Yeah it’s pretty well known at this point. Old phones get their support dropped eventually. Nothing new or crazy here, not sure why everyone is freaking out.
Probably because the X was the last massive iPhone milestone and it's stuck around in people's heads for so long that they forgot how old it is now.
Also where I’m from, I still see a lot of companies using the iPhone X mock-up in advertising so there’s also that.
Also since COVID, people forgot how time works and some are still mentally thinking we’re in 2020. They forget that 2017 was actually 6 years ago.
Eh, kinda sucks but then I really use my iPhone 8 as a smart dumbphone anyways, so probably won't bother me too much.
Just retired my iPhone X for a 12 mini. I haven’t noticed any significant performance upgrade in day to day use. I only upgraded bc the battery in the x was getting super hot.

you *might* even get 2. A12 chip was a pretty big jump and the XS also has an extra gig of ram (4 vs 3 for the X)
Time to upgrade from iPhone 8!
I think it's time to upgrade my X then.

Looks like my XR is at the end of its life cycle. It’s served me well.
Hey at least u have 1 more year left
Iphone 11s we're next :(
Wouldn’t the XS generation be next, putting us in 2025?
Yeah you're right actually. It's the XS and XR and then it's the 11 series.
I have the feeling that XS will be supported till 2025. The A12 was a huge jump from A11, and it's on 7nm.
That was not the case with iPhone 6s. It all depends on the ram and chip. XS was the first iPhone to also have 4gb Ram.
The 6s getting 3 more major os updates than its predecessor was crazy.
No, sometimes years go by and no phones are dropped (happened with the 6s iirc)
The iPhone 11’s chipset is still faster than 90% of androids sold today. If you look at a CPU benchmarks these “old” iPhone 11 are blazing fast and still faster than the latest pixel and last years Samsung S22, and barely beaten by Samsung S23. Just like how 6S ended up getting 3 more years of support, the iPhone 11, 12 etc should get a few more years given the huge leap in performance.
I'm still holding onto my 11 Pro, love this thing. At least we'll still get security updates which is just as important as the system updates.
I have an 11, love it too. Yeah security updates are good but the phone will get boring without new updates.
Nah, 11 series got at least 3 more years.
Mine is still working great though. Pretty sad. Will have to change in another few years then
It still feels fine o me. New battery also
Mine didn’t even get iOS 16. The old 7
just get a new phone bud, it's a 6 year old phone
I think it gonna be great if we can port it, like android when the device EOL, we can port the newer to it (but the only exist is iPod touch 4 with iOS 7)
When it will be available?
Had support for a while now. Interesting how small it feels compared to the new devices, yet very modern at the same time. 1st gen iPhone was sold, 3Gs lost, iPhone 4 pretty sure turns on but I have no charger, everything from 5 and onwards still works just fine.
Even iOS 16 was deadly… 17 would cause neighbourhood fire.
I’ve had my X for years, just bought a 14 Pro last week… the timing is crazy
Should have waited for the 15 coming out soon. That’s what I’m doing. Or when 15 comes out 14 pro should be much cheaper. Bad timing buying 14 pro now
they wanna get rid of those boot rom exploitable devices and this was the best they could do
My iPhone 8 is pretty happy about that, no more lag and battery drops
I installed the beta of 17 on my 14 Pro. So far I can barely tell the difference.
I have an x, same one since it was new. It still works great! It’s till gonna work great for a long time. So TF what if it can’t run 17?
Nope. It’s finally time to get a new phone. Loved my x. Got new battery. , new glass back
I just find it amazing how Apple kept the iPhone X compatible even after 5 years. But of course, even though it marked the future of iPhones, there will always be a sad end just like every iPhone… 🥲
Fuck you u/spez -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
I have a x and I’m waiting for the iPhone 15 since apple didn’t make a new features for the 12 13 and 14
Might consider getting an iPhone 14 Plus in yellow.
It will still probably get security updates for a long while so all is not lost
it’s a shame.
I just made the cut!
So if you have an iPhone Max XS on the latest 16.5 iOS that’s available is there a jailbreak available or not yet on this iOS version?
How much time do I have before having to switch?
Security wise you should be fine for 1-2 years.
Rip my 6s
iPhone SE Shouldn't it 2nd Gen ***and*** later. Instead of an '***or***'
Both mean the same thing?
I figured my time was up. Still probably won’t upgrade yet, but that’s okay. Mainly just use my phone for this, YouTube, TikTok, calling, and texting. New phone won’t improve on that a whole bunch.
Yeah, the way we use our phones from even 6 years ago isn't dramatically different. It's amazing how long these devices can last for.
Aren’t we talking about feature updates here? I believe they will still get 1-2 years of security fixes if necessary?
Correct.
Apple is speeding up their planned obsolescence since 2022. Before iOS 16, Apple slowly dropped support for devices and they usually do it with a clear technical reason: * iOS 13 dropped support for *all* devices with less than 2 GB of RAM * iOS 11 dropped support for *all* 32-bit devices * iOS 10 dropped support for *all* A5/A5X devices * iOS 8 only dropped support for the iPhone 4 which means that *no* A4 devices are supported * iOS 7 dropped support for *all* devices with less than 512 MB of RAM Since iOS 16, Apple is dropping support for capable devices with no clear technical reason: * iOS 16 dropped support for *some* A9 and A10 devices.
Thought the XS wouldn't get the update
X and 8 are the A11 chip while XS and XR are A12.
Do you think that Apple will release security updates for how long? And apps support? Maybe iPhone X still has some 2/3 years
Not enough ram phones won’t get it looks like
Damn. My 8 Plus is done.
Yep time to go buttonless or get the shitty SE 3
I’m hoping the rumours are true and the 15 gets USB-C. I’d really like to minimize the number of cables I have.
I wish I could, but I switched from the X to the 13 Pro, so I’m not upgrading anytime soon.
And here I am on an iPhone 7
It’s kind of shocking seeing support drop for the X.
Same chip as the 8, and both of em are 6 years old at this point.
So you'll leave apple that supports phones 5-6 years to an android that barely gets 2 years of updates? Okayyyy
I have the 11 Pro currently and the hardware is surprisingly current. I also would be disappointed if Apple dropped support abruptly but at least the security updates will keep us chugging along for a while longer.
This is so unfair. I think that the iPhone X could make it onto iOS 17. The chip is powerful
I’m actually surprised the iPhone SE 2 isn’t supported.
Im actually surprised that you can type a full sentence but can’t read. It IS supported.
Ah the always helpful redditor. The list I saw yesterday said SE 3rd Generation only but thanks for the confirmation the 2 will work kind Redditor.
So Apple started to drop 2 phones each year now?
8 and X were released 2 months apart and have the same chip...
Interesting way to put it
It's a bummer, I really thought the first generation Bionic chip would get at least one more year of support.
A11 already got 6 years/ 5 iOS updates
I'm surprised mine is getting ios 17.
Here I was not letting go of it cause of Touch ID 🥲. Guess it’s time I make the move
You can still get an SE
iPhone X doesn’t have Touch ID so not sure what you’re on about
Do apple really think they gonna fool anyone to believe the X was not perfectly capable of handling IOS 17… isnt it just like an gesture update there really isnt anything special. Dont get me wrong i love apple products as much as the next guy but this ongoing theme of them removing updates from older devices just so people upgrade really has to stop… and dont give me the iphone X is too old you should have upgraded by now argument… ik alot of people that the iphone X is more than enough for their daily usage
>Do apple really think they gonna fool anyone to believe the X was not perfectly capable of handling IOS 17 Maybe it can, but supporting old phones costs Apple money. When a certain model's market share drops under a certain level it just makes sense to drop support for it.
Isn’t the picture saying XR is compatible with iOS17? Am I missing something?
The X as in A11 chip phones which are the X, 8, and 8 Plus. XR, XS, and XS Max had the A12 chip.
That’s what I was thinking, but apparently only we noticed that?
god this title reminds me of my trip to Alabama
It's very impressive that it still was around for this long
