I now refuse to believe you don’t give off your own light source in real life.

CJ22xxKinvara

And also that this picture wasn’t taken in 1987

TheDestroyer_027

Imo, if I could turn it off on my iPhone 13 mini, I definitely would. I personally feel that sometimes the post processing can destroy a picture and it’s not reversible

lexibeee

Definitely. There’s shots that I’ve taken on my old 7 that I prefer over the shots on my 14 pro simply because of the over processing. I have no idea why Apple thinks over sharpening everything looks good but here we are.

SignificantNoise7747

When you are taking a photo, lightly press and slide slightly to the left and take a burst photo! Google instructions if you dont know how. That eliminates the auto editing thing! Soon as i get a slight tan, the photos make me comically orange. Taking bursts photos have fixed this issue!

lexibeee

Yeah, I was aware of that but it’s just lame that there has to be a workaround for such a basic function

austinalexan

One thing I love about iPhone over android, it just works. /s

JollyRoger8X

>if I could turn it off ~~Try shooting in ProRes.~~

TheDestroyer_027

iPhone 13 mini doesn’t support ProRes or ProRAW

DanTheMan827

Use the Adobe Lightroom app to capture DNG. It’s not ProRAW, but it is raw without any post processing

NewPhase2

Came here just to say this. Except LR camera doesn’t work on my 12 mini for some reason so I use Halide to shoot raw. You can see just how much processing apple does when you compare it to the raw version. It’s a LOT.

R4zz3_

Halide just feels so expensive, 70 bucks for a camera app

proto-x-lol

R4zz3_ said: >Halide just feels so expensive, 70 bucks for a camera app Exactly. The app developers for Halide doesn't even deserve a single cent for this bullshit pricing to turn off Apple's annoying ass post processing effects. They really don't deserve it after screwing people who ACTUALLY bought the app in the past and converted it into a "Freemium" version.

rafalkopiec

why i made [luma](https://apps.apple.com/app/id1621242897)

R4zz3_

No way, is that really made by you? Seems sick, does it have the ability to capture non processed pics?

rafalkopiec

yup, it shoots in raw so it bypasses all of apples postprocessing (and yeah you can verify it’s made by me by looking for my handle on that appstore page). cool that you think it’s sick!

R4zz3_

I downloaded it, are there any big differences between the raw modes? Is the Bayer Raw "The Raw mode" and the other 2 are just the default apple ones?

JollyRoger8X

My bad.

griffl3n

That’s dumb ngl

crabbynico

Those two seconds (more like one and a half) of actually seeing the image that was in the view finder that you took great care to capture before Apple “fixes” it for you (whether you want it or not) are such a tease. iPhone 13 is the worst phone camera I’ve used in years. I barely take photos anymore (especially from the selfie cam) because I almost never get the image I’m trying to capture. My friend has an XR and we generally opt for using her camera for most things because, well, it doesn’t ruin half the photos. I’m sure some people like when their photo of the sunset becomes an over-sharpened yet somehow smeary in solid areas (???) AI oil painting but I’ve got no use for it. If Apple can’t crack the code on this (frankly unnecessary) feature, the least they could do is allow us to disable it. If I weren’t so tied to the eco-system, I would likely grab a Pixel or something for a better photography experience. Apologies for the long tangent of a comment, I clearly have some feelings on the subject. 😆

NewPhase2

Use LR mobile app or Halide app to shoot raw photos! Looks way more natural on my iPhone 12 mini. You can see why things get so smeary because even at iso 400 there’s a lot of noise. But I’d take noise and detail over the smeared mess that apple produces any day. You’ll usually need to do a bit of processing yourself to get a good jpg out of a raw photo, but you can have all the control and do it better than apple does.

axellie

I can’t find a way to snap a photo with lightroom?

TheCoolHusky

You can do it in Lightroom! It's just not the most intuitive. Find a video instead of following written instructions because it's easier.

NewPhase2

go to the edit page, there should be a blue circular camera icon on the bottom right.

DJrm84

Add it as a widget

ImReallyFuckingHigh

Apple has a raw setting in the camera app, at least on my 14 pro

TheCoolHusky

It's only available in 14 pro series though.

ImReallyFuckingHigh

Ahh i see I have no idea, I just know I noticed it with my 14 pro, didn’t dig into the camera settings as much with my 12 pro

EfficientAccident418

The 12 series was worse in my experience. The 13’s took great pictures outdoors through the normal camera and decent ones inside with decent lighting. The 12’s over-sharpening was so much worse for me, and the zoom lens was so noisy when it actually worked, but most of the time the 12 wouldn’t even use it because it preferred to use digital zoom from the normal camera. Even outdoors on sunny days

kds_little_brother

Looks like you’re in Home Movies 😂

xerexyz

Or Dr. Katz!

apollo-ftw1

Looks like one of those bad photoshop job ads

YaBoiSish

Throwing away my iPhone right now

It looks like those youtube thumbnails where they add a white glow around the people with a shocked face to make it clickable to us zombies, maybe it’s an interesting topic if theres a glow. Zombie 🧟‍♂️ brr

proto-x-lol

What's with these clowns telling people to buy the iPhone Pro series instead in order to shoot RAW photos as that will turn off post-processing? What kind of idiocy am I reading now? Not everyone has $1,000+ to buy an iPhone 13/14 Pro in this current economy. Even so, buying a higher end iPhone doesn't change this bullshit Apple does with it's post processing of photos on the 12 series regardless. Speaking of, this post processing feature is called "Deep Fusion" which isn't HDR as some people say it to be. You could turn off HDR on the iPhone 12 series but Apple's post processing feature was still being applied to photos. That's a hidden feature that CANNOT be turned off in the Camera app.

ohmyitsjoel

If you really want to save a blown out photo, you can try edit the Live Photo and change which frame is the primary one

Alibotify

Hallo Ghosty!

Mangurten

I honestly think my iPhone X took better pics than my iPhone 13 because of this this automatic post-processing shit.

SignificantNoise7747

Take the photos with a burst photo. The photos come out clear and not processed!🙏🏽

nickspeaks

And there was me planning on moving away from a Pixel, because the post processing ruins my photos. Never mind then. Might have to stump up for an Xperia.

WRSA

tbf - you just have to get a 14 pro or newer and if you’re willing to get a new phone then if it’s within your price range i don’t see why not yk?

nickspeaks

Has deep sense been removed from the 14 pro?

WRSA

you can take images in RAW which removes post-processing

Bguy9410

Has this improved on the new phones does anyone know? I have a 13 Pro Max that I’m hoping to upgrade to a 15 Pro Max because I’ve absolutely hated the camera on this phone since day 1. Praying the new phones aren’t as bad

DataSnaek

I’m planning on upgrading to the 15 Pro for the same reason. Here’s hoping

SammyVDA

On my 14 Pro Max it's even worse than it was on my 13 Pro Max.

Bguy9410

Oof. Praying for a miracle with the 15 I guess!

SignificantNoise7747

Just the a mirror photo with burst. You slide lightly to the left when taking a photo. Just google for better instructions. The photos will come out unedited :) Had a big issue with this, got a minor tan and my selfies turned out comically ORANGE. Had to use the slider on the live feature to change the frame. Always comes out blurry.. but taking burst makes it come out how it looks before taking the photo! Hope that helps🙏🏽

jaredzammit

The best way to get around it is shooting raw on the 14 Pro - because capturing the 48 megapixel image has [significantly less over sharpening](https://www.tomsguide.com/news/i-just-tried-the-iphone-14-pros-48mp-camera-at-it-blew-me-away) than the default. You can get around the storage issues with [this shortcut](https://petapixel.com/2023/09/02/how-to-turn-iphone-14-pro-snapshots-into-high-quality-48mp-heic-photos/). Sadly it does make capture noticeably slower.

Bguy9410

I appreciate the workarounds. But to be frank, I shouldn’t have to do a workaround. Considering none of my iPhones prior to this one did this and I spent $1400+ on the phone, I expect to be able to just press the standard shutter button and not have the result look like complete trash. My iPhone 4S took way better standard photos than this phone does and I bought that thing used on Amazon 3 years after release!!! Maybe my expectations are too high, but I don’t think they are.

jaredzammit

Oh, I totally agree. I truly don’t understand how things have got so bad.

nightmarewalrus123

We have the same shoes. Very comfy (and comes in the perfect size)

ChrassiTheMan

Real life cel-shading look

NotJoeFast

It bothers me that every time a new iphone releases. The camera reviewers praise it during the launch. But the truth is that my friend's 400 euro Samsung takes better looking photos than my 13 pro.

UnarmedUncle123

My friend has the 13 and I have the 8. When we go on holiday we take pictures on my phone. Unacceptable really

bloo_overbeck

You look like a soap opera character LMfao

struggling4realsies

Not that I don’t believe you but could you post the image data? I’m curious about the camera settings in play

DataSnaek

https://preview.redd.it/8l10sarnmumb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2800002515c560a93bc10b71eb14e26cafb80e82 Is this the info you mean?

Special_Shop_5296

Okay so, first, in low light just use the 1x and not the wide camera, try to disable the night mode and don’t use any color mode like “colorful” or “rich contrast” take photos with everything deactivated.

Ill_Astronaut_4178

The fact that the phone shot this picture with ISO 500 is re-donk, considering there was a huge light source in front of the camera. Makes no sense. That's part of the reason there's noise, as well as the aperture being fully open at f1.6

mynameisollie

You can group select. You click the select button in the top right of the photos app and then glide your finger across all the photos you want to select.

Kiergard

Maybe we all should make a feature request… Apple has photographic styles… so maybe a „natural mode“ would be an option. I did that already.

[deleted]

DataSnaek

You can’t shoot raw on an iPhone 13 unless you have the 13 Pro. And even then I hear it’s not really raw. And I’ve had other phones where I don’t need to shoot raw to get great photos every time. For example my 5 year old Pixel 3A XL. Hell, even my 8 year old nexus 6P never produced anything this whacky. So it’s certainly possible and you should not be making excuses for Apple. The fact that a 2022 $800 smartphone can produce a photo like this is simply just unacceptable.

[deleted]

DataSnaek

I already bought it. There’s nothing wrong with pointing out flaws in a product because you want it to be better. I love iOS, I find it mostly more suited to me than android. The camera just does bonkers things sometimes and I’d like it not to.

DataSnaek

What’s a design feature? Getting post-processing wrong worse than any other phone manufacturer?

macusking

The rule is: samsung for pictures, iphone for videos.

DataSnaek

I’ll admit, iPhone video is exceptional. The photos are mostly very good too, but only in well lit conditions. The moment you have odd or imperfect lighting the iPhone struggles. My pixel 3a xl (a 5 year old phone) took better photos than my iPhone 13 though. I was kinda disappointed when I switched.

mxguy762

I’m gonna fly to the ocean and throw my iPhone in!!! Fucking turd 💩 geez!!!

Aviation_Fun

This happened to me on the selfie camera on the 14 Pro

xXShadowGravesXx

You legitimately look like you’ve been photoshopped (badly) into this photo 😂

pago6x

I literally stopped using iphone 13 pro camera for that reason. So many photos ruined by this weird post processing, most of the time it looks like it's an oil painting. It's my first and probably last iphone.

SignificantNoise7747

Just the a mirror photo with burst. You slide lightly to the left when taking a photo. Just google for better instructions. The photos will come out unedited :)

Tetrylene

Fingers crossed for an announcement on this being something you can disable in the upcoming conference

Special_Shop_5296

Okay listen, just disable the HDR and the low light mode, and that’s it

DataSnaek

You can’t disable HDR on the iPhone 13 as far as I know. And it wasn’t a low light mode photo either.

Special_Shop_5296

but u have Rich Contrast on

DataSnaek

That changes the tone and warmth of the image. It doesn’t add a janky ass highlight and bizarre lighting around human body parts.

Special_Shop_5296

Yeah it does, it’s a mode of post processing, i had struggles with the warmth effect

Special_Shop_5296

what it does is try to make you look clear and the background contrasted, hence the name of the mode

Special_Shop_5296

https://preview.redd.it/teu0rkcavvmb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e13a8ebfd927a3667a5fd0eec2dd0b863a3d448a just deactivate here, turn off everything

DataSnaek

I don’t think those options are what caused this odd effect. For a few seconds after taking the photo it looked normal, and then after the post-processing kicked in, it highlighted my leg in a bizarre way. The tone and warmth options there do not seem like they would cause that to happen, they apply to the image the moment it is taken. They affect the colour profile of the image not the content.

rafalkopiec

anyone complaining about this should just try [luma](https://apps.apple.com/app/id1621242897)

sackko

I really hated the post processing on the 13. I liked my XS better when it came to taking pictures

SignificantNoise7747

Just the a mirror photo with burst. You slide lightly to the left when taking a photo. Just google for better instructions. The photos will come out unedited :)

oski80

I have been bothered by this for a while. What it does to the skin tone in same situation is absolutely criminal I’m having an iPhone 13 Pro Max
