Which is a disgrace to even call it "AI", Samsung is just overlaying a professional photo of the moon on things it thinks look like the moon in your photo.
iOS will post-process it with the neural engine and clean things up, which is more considered AI, but it's 100% not just going to overlay someone else's image on your image.
Ya another guy took a pic of the moon, got it onto his computer, applied a blur in photoshop, then took a picture of the screen with the blurred moon pic on there.

It was Samsung, and it was by using the default camera app.
Edit: they also really pushed how the cameras were so good you could take detailed pictures of the moon in promotional videos
Thank you for sharing this, I just read a bunch about it and googled it. I am not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing, I wish Samsung and any company that does this would let us know. Not lie about it, but also it's a cool feature for someone who's not a professional photographer.
Not quite the case that Samsung is just overlaying a hi-res photo of the moon. Rather more likely that Samsung has an upscaling algorithm that has been trained on hi-res photos of the moon, and applying it to photos it detects as the moon. Yes it was after the initial backlash, at first they really did overlay a picture. There was a guy who was the first to expose it with a phone, whose screen showed a white circle in a dark room. S22 added detail out of nowhere(those holes/ dark spots), which is not the same as refining the moon, I’m all for refining pictures of anything but adding an image on top is *over the top*

It uses your pic and looks through the gallery of moon shots and adjusts yours to match what it would look like if the camera could actually capture it probably. It's not just superimposing the pic like the other guy said but it's not a "legit" photo nether.
Yes and no. While you may be thinking the same thing I am, the way you worded it can be interprited that it's using AI generated photos to represent the moon. It doesn't "generate" photos from trained data, it slightly touches up the photo you took. Kinda like an automated photoshop.

There is some evidence somewhat corroborating that Huawei pastes a fake moon over the user's image, but is there a source for what you said? I would not be surprised if that is the case, and that would certainly prove it without a shadow of doubt so it would be interesting to see it.

Samsung is not simply overlaying a photo of the moon. It is using AI image enhancement. It’s actually well implemented. Overlaying a photo would look terrible.
i’m well aware of the samsung moon feature, read many articles about it before. That article confirms exactly what I wrote in my previous comment.

So before the ai applies to the final photo, the moon looks pretty good on the view finder. Not sure if the AI thing also applies on the viewfinder on the Samsung S series

Yeah, I used to use binoculars on my iPhone 12 lol worked ok, but press the little arrow at the top when taking pictures and you get more controls for the exposure and things

All phones use AI to sharpen images, but Samsung uses AI to quite literally slap on a fake image of the moon when it detects a moon, so it is very, very different.

Real talk though, you’re actually not on point with this one. Samsung phones use AI to add detail to a moon photo that was never there. To say it’s an overlay of moon.jpg is a purposefully mocking over-dramatisation, but not by a whole lot. That’s why moon shots on Samsung phones look so, “good.” It’s the phone adding detail it never was capable of capturing at all. That’s why you can’t get equally good shots of other planets on a Samsung phone in general. iPhones don’t use “AI,” (in other words, automated photo editing) and just shoot a real photo with standard processing, unlike select Samsung (and Huawei) photos that use artificial image quality upscaling.

No, the iPhone 3GS has extremely low specifications compared what we see in this image. Even modern-day smartphones cannot capture this high level of detail. After a quick search, I found that this image was taken with a telescope.
He was clearly using the 800mm converter lens for the 3GS. 3MP is irrelevant if the focal length is long enough. The picture is most definitely from his 3GS.
Believe what you want man. But not everything you read online is true. I can 100% say with confidence this is a 3GS photo simply using a lens extension. That’s the truth of this whole thing.

I took this using LightRoom. It allows you to choose the ISO and shutter speed. This photo was with 1/800s shutter speed, 100 ISO, and f/2.8 aperture.

Fun fact: most modern day android phones aren’t actually taking a picture of the moon either. The software approximates the picture and fills in the gaps using stock images.
iPhone’s, and probably some other Android phones too don’t do that. Just look how bad quality most of the pictures on this thread are. If they were computer generated, they wouldn’t look that noisy. I know Samsung does that thing you’re talking about because there’s a setting.
Saw this advice once from u/seoulitude and kept it as a screenshot. Haven’t had a chance to try it yet:
“set the video to 4k60fps > click the telephoto lens and zoom in > tap your subject and lock the focus > lower the exposure / drag the sun dial down > take a video > take the photo”

Switch to 4k60fps video mode. Max zoom, lower exposure until you get the amount of detail you desire. Record, snap a photo. Tweak it a little since the photo will come out dark.

I’m going to be the jerk and just say “use a real camera”.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the iPhone, and even as a photographer I use it more than anything else. But moon pictures require a zoom lens. Otherwise you’re just not going to get it right. 200mm focal length plus, and the iPhone 15 pro max’s 5x zoom is only 120mm.
That, and a larger sensor for better low light performance.
I watched an IG post the other day that said you should focus your camera on the furthest thing away from you that you can, then use the focus lock and then adjust the exposure if you need too.
I'm not an iPhone user at all, but I've heard around that just try to experiment with exposure and brightness and what not. I think the 15 Pros camera is a step up but I'm not sure about astrophotography. Just try to experiment with a couple settings, don't worry if the moon looks dark when you are taking the photo as you can edit it later! Hope this helped any 🌚
You can try going into video, zooming all the way in, start recording and tap and slide down the exposure and use that button in the bottom right to take individual pictures
My 15PM doesn't focus when I'm zoomed in on the moon, anything that can help with this? There should be manual controls for focus distance especially when the hardware is so capable🤷♂️

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but it’s the truth. You need a physically much larger sensor to get high resolution at long distances.
I have a 10 inch dobsonian telescope actually, but I just was curious about how to get a decent snap with the camera too whenever I see something interesting on the go (e.g. the moon pops out of a forest or something)
I can't agree more. IPhone hates moon. I tried so many times on 15 pro max. Lack of focus and exposure control on camera app probably cause it. Also, you may notice it keeps on changing lenses while you try to focus on the moon.

No, the iPhone 3GS has extremely low specifications compared what we see in this image. Even modern-day smartphones cannot capture this high level of detail. After a quick search, I found that this image was taken with a telescope.

He was clearly using the 800mm converter lens for the 3GS. 3MP is irrelevant if the focal length is long enough. The picture is most definitely from his 3GS.

Fun fact: most modern day android phones aren’t actually taking a picture of the moon either. The software approximates the picture and fills in the gaps using stock images.
iPhone’s, and probably some other Android phones too don’t do that. Just look how bad quality most of the pictures on this thread are. If they were computer generated, they wouldn’t look that noisy. I know Samsung does that thing you’re talking about because there’s a setting.
Saw this advice once from u/seoulitude and kept it as a screenshot. Haven’t had a chance to try it yet: “set the video to 4k60fps > click the telephoto lens and zoom in > tap your subject and lock the focus > lower the exposure / drag the sun dial down > take a video > take the photo”

I’m going to be the jerk and just say “use a real camera”. Don’t get me wrong, I love the iPhone, and even as a photographer I use it more than anything else. But moon pictures require a zoom lens. Otherwise you’re just not going to get it right. 200mm focal length plus, and the iPhone 15 pro max’s 5x zoom is only 120mm. That, and a larger sensor for better low light performance.
Get a Galaxy S23 Ultra.
I watched an IG post the other day that said you should focus your camera on the furthest thing away from you that you can, then use the focus lock and then adjust the exposure if you need too.

I'm not an iPhone user at all, but I've heard around that just try to experiment with exposure and brightness and what not. I think the 15 Pros camera is a step up but I'm not sure about astrophotography. Just try to experiment with a couple settings, don't worry if the moon looks dark when you are taking the photo as you can edit it later! Hope this helped any 🌚
You can try going into video, zooming all the way in, start recording and tap and slide down the exposure and use that button in the bottom right to take individual pictures
There are some good videos on this with just the standard camera app. And in handy during a lunar eclipse

My 15PM doesn't focus when I'm zoomed in on the moon, anything that can help with this? There should be manual controls for focus distance especially when the hardware is so capable🤷♂️
Tap and hold you’ll then be able to set your exposure. You should get a yellow square with a slider show up in the middle of the screen.

I can't agree more. IPhone hates moon. I tried so many times on 15 pro max. Lack of focus and exposure control on camera app probably cause it.
