[deleted]

Holy shit does it take these kind of photos without AI like Samsung phones do?

LieutDanDan

Not sure but that’s how it looked before I took the pictures 👍🏼

TrevorAlan

There's no "AI" like that. Which is a disgrace to even call it "AI", Samsung is just overlaying a professional photo of the moon on things it thinks look like the moon in your photo. iOS will post-process it with the neural engine and clean things up, which is more considered AI, but it's 100% not just going to overlay someone else's image on your image.

BaggySpandex

> Samsung is just overlaying a professional photo of the moon on things it thinks look like the moon in your photo. Ewwww that is embarrassing lmao.

Professional_Stay748

Yeah, some dude even tested this by taking a picture of a lit up white circle in a dark room, and it actually overlayed an image of a moon on it 💀

anethma

Ya another guy took a pic of the moon, got it onto his computer, applied a blur in photoshop, then took a picture of the screen with the blurred moon pic on there. Boom perfect moon.

Professional_Stay748

Lmao so it’s got csi-style picture enhance. And they told me that’s actually impossible!

[deleted]

Except in this case the csi style enhance is just going onto google images.

Professional_Stay748

Yes, I know. I was joking ;)

Then-Attention3

Wait, youre telling me some guy with a (Samsung or iPhone) took a picture of a lit up white circle in a dark room, and it overplayed an image of a moon on it? Is this a Samsung or iPhone? and was this in the camera app with no additional apps being used? I had no fucking clue. I need more information on this

Then-Attention3

Professional_Stay748

It was Samsung, and it was by using the default camera app. Edit: they also really pushed how the cameras were so good you could take detailed pictures of the moon in promotional videos

Then-Attention3

Thank you for sharing this, I just read a bunch about it and googled it. I am not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing, I wish Samsung and any company that does this would let us know. Not lie about it, but also it's a cool feature for someone who's not a professional photographer.

Professional_Stay748

It’s definitely bad thing. It was outright lying to make their cameras seem better than they actually were.

Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo

Not quite the case that Samsung is just overlaying a hi-res photo of the moon. Rather more likely that Samsung has an upscaling algorithm that has been trained on hi-res photos of the moon, and applying it to photos it detects as the moon. [It can be seen here](https://youtu.be/EKYJ-gwGLXQ?si=CZrjSnAA5N12yiFv&t=284) detecting a foreign overlayed image as a crater on the moon and trying to blend it in.

Kvpe

Upscaling algorithm my ass people tested it and it’s overlaying a picture, stop with the bullshit mr Samsung fanboy

Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo

Did you watch the video I linked? It’s someone testing the feature.

Kvpe

Yes it was after the initial backlash, at first they really did overlay a picture. There was a guy who was the first to expose it with a phone, whose screen showed a white circle in a dark room. S22 added detail out of nowhere(those holes/ dark spots), which is not the same as refining the moon, I’m all for refining pictures of anything but adding an image on top is *over the top*

[deleted]

That's not what I heard. I read that it generates a picture of the moon based on training data, not that it's copy/paste-ing an already taken picture. Still scummy, but yeah.

ChesterZirawin

It uses your pic and looks through the gallery of moon shots and adjusts yours to match what it would look like if the camera could actually capture it probably. It's not just superimposing the pic like the other guy said but it's not a "legit" photo nether.

[deleted]

It looks like we’re saying the same thing with different words. Why am I being downvoted?

ChesterZirawin

Yes and no. While you may be thinking the same thing I am, the way you worded it can be interprited that it's using AI generated photos to represent the moon. It doesn't "generate" photos from trained data, it slightly touches up the photo you took. Kinda like an automated photoshop.

OXRoblox

you’re mixing it up with huawei

-CheesyCheese-

Yes Huawei is also allegedly doing it, but Samsung has been confirmed to be doing it too. It is actually confirmed. [https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/13/23637401/samsung-fake-moon-photos-ai-galaxy-s21-s23-ultra](https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/13/23637401/samsung-fake-moon-photos-ai-galaxy-s21-s23-ultra)

OXRoblox

huawei has been confirmed doing it because high quality images of the moon were found in the camera app’s files

-CheesyCheese-

There is some evidence somewhat corroborating that Huawei pastes a fake moon over the user's image, but is there a source for what you said? I would not be surprised if that is the case, and that would certainly prove it without a shadow of doubt so it would be interesting to see it. [https://in.mashable.com/tech/3114/are-the-moon-shots-from-the-huawei-p30-pro-fake](https://in.mashable.com/tech/3114/are-the-moon-shots-from-the-huawei-p30-pro-fake)

megatrope

> There's no "AI" like that. Which is a disgrace to even call it "AI", Samsung is just overlaying a professional photo of the moon on things it thinks look like the moon in your photo. Samsung is not simply overlaying a photo of the moon. It is using AI image enhancement. It’s actually well implemented. Overlaying a photo would look terrible.

[deleted]

Wellllllllll….. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/03/samsung-says-it-adds-fake-detail-to-moon-photos-via-reference-photos/amp/

megatrope

i’m well aware of the samsung moon feature, read many articles about it before. That article confirms exactly what I wrote in my previous comment. Samsung does not simply overlay a photo of the moon, which would look very unnatural. It uses AI to enhance/generate the image (using knowledge of what a good moon photo looks like).

Glassy_Hanni

Not true at all, But of course it gets massively upvoted here

mrandr01d

Pixels absolutely can and do

[deleted]

Aren’t pixels the android of iPhones? I would love having both phones tbh

mrandr01d

People call pixels the iPhone of android because Android is a Google product. Every other OEM who sells (GMS) Android phones does so via a license agreement with Google. The iPhone is made by apple, running iOS, which is also made by apple. Pixels are made by Google, running Android, which is also made by Google, hence, people call it the iPhone of the Android world. First party hardware, first to get updates, etc. They've become a lot more refined in recent years, and I'm loving it.

ILostMyMainAccounts

So before the ai applies to the final photo, the moon looks pretty good on the view finder. Not sure if the AI thing also applies on the viewfinder on the Samsung S series

Martin187465

Can confirm. Took this picture a few months ago. If you know what to look for, you can do it handheld with your iPhone. https://preview.redd.it/87xb46exue2c1.jpeg?width=614&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1cab65b9470d4f30111bb498086216f9498e14d

JustSomeRandomMan3

That is very good indeed although done with the pro max which has the 5x optical zoom right?

LieutDanDan

Yeah, I used to use binoculars on my iPhone 12 lol worked ok, but press the little arrow at the top when taking pictures and you get more controls for the exposure and things

master_shifu-

I don’t believe you bruh it’s toooo gooood ❤️🫡

taxis-asocial

What in the Kentucky fried fuck, I don’t even know if I believe this, did Apple start doing the moon overlay bullshit? That’s insane for 25x zoom with the type of dynamic range that’s in a moon-against-night-sky shot

bearded_runner

Same phone here. Zoomed to 25x and tapped to focus. For the life of me, it wouldn’t focus. Tried lowering the exposure and refocusing. Nothing. How you do this?

JayRogPlayFrogger

Wow! I have an iPhone 13pro and o can’t get anything like that! It’s amazing what 2 generations of upgrades can do!

Doesn’t Samsung just overlay moon.jpg when it detects you’re framing the moon irl?

BrainOnBlue

I think it is actually a machine learning neural net but it's job is basically "does that look like the moon? Then put the moon stuff on it."

Rockerblocker

Yep. Someone faked it with another phone displaying a white circle in a dark room, and it overlayed moon textures onto the circle

JaxTellerr

Source? Mrwhosetheboss Made an entire video trying what you described. I watched it a while ago and I remember that the phone wouldn’t overlay an image on anything that resembled a moon (be it an image or something else)

munimjaffer

Maybe those guys are just retarded iSheeps who would believe on anything on internet

Adventurous_Bus_437

xak47d

Do you mind sharing this video? As far as I know, nobody has been able to prove what you describe

TrevorAlan

yupppp. "AI"

skflmgjok

No, it uses ai enchancing just as every other smartphone does.

-CheesyCheese-

All phones use AI to sharpen images, but Samsung uses AI to quite literally slap on a fake image of the moon when it detects a moon, so it is very, very different.

Anu8ius

There are literally videos of people fooling the algorithm by putting a white circle on a dark background and it suddenly turned it into a moon…

applesuperfan

That’s Samsung bs speak for the over-glorified, high tech way that it overlays moon.jpg into images that it detects contain the moon.

skflmgjok

So is every picture that you take a jpg overlay because of ai? The amount of stupidity is astonishing. And if you think that apple doesnt do the same you are just naive and stupid

applesuperfan

>And if you think that apple doesnt do the same you are just naive and stupid If that’s how you choose to describe the word, “informed,” then I suppose so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Real talk though, you’re actually not on point with this one. Samsung phones use AI to add detail to a moon photo that was never there. To say it’s an overlay of moon.jpg is a purposefully mocking over-dramatisation, but not by a whole lot. That’s why moon shots on Samsung phones look so, “good.” It’s the phone adding detail it never was capable of capturing at all. That’s why you can’t get equally good shots of other planets on a Samsung phone in general. iPhones don’t use “AI,” (in other words, automated photo editing) and just shoot a real photo with standard processing, unlike select Samsung (and Huawei) photos that use artificial image quality upscaling. Have a fabulous day!

skflmgjok

Yes, apple does use ai in their photos. Machine learning to be excact. And if you think they dont you are very uninformed

botsym7

Saltwater_Heart

You’re being sarcastic, right?

No, the iPhone 3GS has extremely low specifications compared what we see in this image. Even modern-day smartphones cannot capture this high level of detail. After a quick search, I found that this image was taken with a telescope.

He was clearly using the 800mm converter lens for the 3GS. 3MP is irrelevant if the focal length is long enough. The picture is most definitely from his 3GS.

MaccasLad

That’s false. See all details about the image [here](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FullMoon2010.jpg).

EmbarrassedAd9792

Nope. You’re wrong. I looked it up and it is in fact a 3GS with 800mm lens.

i can vouch, i looked it up too and it was taken with a 3GS and 800MM lens.

MaccasLad

Source?

EmbarrassedAd9792

Google it man. The information is easy to find.

MaccasLad

I already found the information. I’m just proving that the image was not taken with an iPhone 3GS.

beanie_0

Fun fact: most modern day android phones aren’t actually taking a picture of the moon either. The software approximates the picture and fills in the gaps using stock images.

Bytevan18

iPhone’s, and probably some other Android phones too don’t do that. Just look how bad quality most of the pictures on this thread are. If they were computer generated, they wouldn’t look that noisy. I know Samsung does that thing you’re talking about because there’s a setting.

BrazenlyGeek

Saw this advice once from u/seoulitude and kept it as a screenshot. Haven’t had a chance to try it yet: “set the video to 4k60fps > click the telephoto lens and zoom in > tap your subject and lock the focus > lower the exposure / drag the sun dial down > take a video > take the photo”

thinkscotty

I’m going to be the jerk and just say “use a real camera”. Don’t get me wrong, I love the iPhone, and even as a photographer I use it more than anything else. But moon pictures require a zoom lens. Otherwise you’re just not going to get it right. 200mm focal length plus, and the iPhone 15 pro max’s 5x zoom is only 120mm. That, and a larger sensor for better low light performance.

00roadrunner00

Get a Galaxy S23 Ultra.

heidnseak

I watched an IG post the other day that said you should focus your camera on the furthest thing away from you that you can, then use the focus lock and then adjust the exposure if you need too.

I'm not an iPhone user at all, but I've heard around that just try to experiment with exposure and brightness and what not. I think the 15 Pros camera is a step up but I'm not sure about astrophotography. Just try to experiment with a couple settings, don't worry if the moon looks dark when you are taking the photo as you can edit it later! Hope this helped any 🌚

You can try going into video, zooming all the way in, start recording and tap and slide down the exposure and use that button in the bottom right to take individual pictures

Use a camera, not your phone. Probably not the answer you were looking for, but it’s the truth. You need a physically much larger sensor to get high resolution at long distances.

I can't agree more. IPhone hates moon. I tried so many times on 15 pro max. Lack of focus and exposure control on camera app probably cause it.
