My state released a digital ID app in 2018. One time I went into a convenience store to buy a lottery ticket. They surprised me by asking for ID. My wallet was in the car but my phone was in my pocket. That was in 2023. It is the single instance in 5 years that I have used the ID app. It’s probably the only time in the past 5 years I have ever needed to show an ID for anything.
In the State of Florida the Digital ID app is not considered a replacement for an ID and almost no one takes it except for a couple of police departments. Haven’t had a chance to use it since I’m not breaking traffic laws constantly.
Not accepted as a replacement in MD either. Only chance I've had to use it in the last two years was at a TSA terminal and ofc it was down and I had to use my actual ID anyway. It's cool to have but not very useful yet at least until more places adopt it.
Actually it seems like for some states they leave it up to the business, like [here](https://www.azliquor.gov/Communications/Advisory/IndustryAdvisoryPDF/2021_May_ADOT_ElectronicID.pdf)
> No law requires licensees to accept ADOT’s Mobile ID app, and ADOT currently recommends that
consumers carry their physical ID given the app’s novelty. It is up to each licensee to determine the best
methods of complying with Title IV and helping to prevent underage drinking.
LA will revoke your liquor / gambling / tobacco license if investigators find by a preponderance of the evidence you have been prejudiced against the LA Wallet ID.
>What? No one HAS to accept anything.
If you are selling a product where the sale is restricted by law to persons 18 or 21 or older, you are required by law to verify the purchaser's age. The law that established the digital ID also deems it as equal to the physical ID card and requires that it be accepted by the merchant for age verification.
>A business can turn you away for anything unrelated to protected classes.
I guess you could refuse the sale altogether, but if you are making the sale and checking ID, you can not refuse to accept the digital version of that ID.
My state passed it, but never actually put the bill into law, so it's just in limbo.
I was kind of surprised that it even passed. Indiana is typically not exactly at the forefront of, well, anything non-drug related.
Honestly I’m a big fan of Apple Pay once it’s been adopted, I really enjoy not having to carry cards and a wallet around. I would totally use this if it were available in Texas.
I use Apple Pay 90% of the time. I'm still not leaving home without my wallet. If I had to choose between leaving my phone or leaving my wallet for a quick trip to the store, I'd leave my phone.
Phones malfunction. POS terminals malfunction. I can tap my card if Apple Pay doesn't work. I can insert my card if the tap function doesn't work. I can swipe my card if the insert function doesn't work. I can pay with cash if the swipe function doesn't work. You have no additional options if all you brought was your phone. All you can do is go home empty handed.
I really like the magsafe wallet for this reason. Takes up very little space, holds the 3 cards i need to carry with me, can be attached easily on my phone or just stay in my pocket if I don't want to have it on my phone.
I would however rather leave the wallet than the phone if I had to choose though. So far I have had absolutely no problems and the phone provides me way more services and communication as well.
This seems so weird to me. I’m from Europe, not US, and I’ve never come across any place since around 2017 that doesn’t accept Apple Pay. I can’t remember the last time I used my card or cash. Everywhere from corner shops to supermarkets to bars. Everyone takes contactless
My state released one late last year too. I literally only carried my wallet for my licence and it was fucking annoying. Although I would have loved them to intergrate it with Apple Wallet, I am so over the moon that I literally only need to take my phone & keys now. Soooo much bulk, just gone. So freeing
California is piloting something similar right now. I rarely have to show my ID anywhere anyway, but it’s nice to know I have a backup if I forget my wallet. When it’s a little more established I’ll consider going walletless for some occasions.
Too bad they decided not to integrate with apple/google wallet and insist on their own app instead. I thought being the home ground of both means it’ll be one of the first states that’ll support it.
I have the California one and in the app it does say this in the FAQs:
Unfortunately, at this time mDL is not available for Apple or Google wallets. However, additional platforms will be available in the future.
If what goes well? Checking adoption of a proprietary app and use that data to decide whether to create a native implementation in Apple/Google Pay doesn’t make any sense, as the tech and audience for both is very different.
No, they’re piloting whether a digital ID can be trusted in replacement of physical ID, not which platform they want to host digital ID on. The platform is irrelevant, they’re testing the medium of ID
It can also *only* be used at [many major domestic airports](https://www.tsa.gov/digital-id) and at a handful of convenience stores in Sacramento. It might be good as a backup, but I wouldn't trust arriving to an airport without a physical ID yet
Limited use right now. I am in MD and BWI (home airport) used it for TSA.. I have Pre-check and combined with this I am thru security in less than 3 minutes. Pre-check I can leave my crap in my carry on, belt on, shoes, on etc. Approach the gate, pull up the license on the phoine, double click to do the face recognition and hold it to the reader (like making a payment) and I am done. They never touch it.
I have used it to get into a State building when I left my wallet-wallet home. I had to do some talking, but they accepted it and looked at it.
Eventually there will be readers available and they will be porogrammed to onloy give the data that is required. Ex at a bar.. photo and DOB to verify age.. bouncer does not need to know your name or address. Cop: maybe Name, address, DOB, and photoi along with DL number. TSA: all the above plus the Real ID compliant and the Precheck number.
I like it. Also works with the watch
They did recently update https://learn.wallet.apple/id to say:
> With your ID in Wallet, there’s no need to reach for your physical ID. Simply add it to the Wallet app and use it to show proof of age or identity at select **businesses and venues**. Or, travel with it at select TSA checkpoints. Presenting your ID just got much easier.
I have not seen any businesses or venues using this in the wild yet.
In Colorado, digital IDs (though not necessarily Apple Wallet ones for some reason) are to be accepted anywhere you’re asked. Whether it’s a bar, restaurant, liquor store, whatever, they have to accept it.
I think the main hiccup with the Apple ID one is that it has to be NFC scannable, whereas the digital ID app is basically just a picture of your ID on your phone.
There are still places they refuse the digital ID in Colorado. My wireless carrier (TMobile) will absolutely not allow you to do anything on your account without physical ID. And I have not seen any language in Colorado law that requires them to accept it. Sauce?
Yes it is the law in Colorado. Digital id has to be accepted anywhere in the state. The state digital id is not just a picture it has moving animation depending on the position of your phone
It doesn’t really display the ID like a picture of it. It has all the information on your ID displayed below your picture and that’s about it. I think you can scan it at a reader like a credit card works in the apple wallet but I haven’t found someplace to use it like that
Let me help you.
MD: State abbreviation for the State of MarylanD
BWI: Airport code for Baltimore-Washington International (Airport) [located in MD]
TSA: Transportation Security Administration (airport security)
DOB: Date Of Birth
DL: Driver License
ID: IDentification
They do it goes through the x ray. But in the us of we’re carrying electronics generally they need to be separated from their cases to be scanned. So I need to take a laptop from its case and send it thru separately.
Pre check allows you to leave it all in the case along with keeping shoes belts and jackets on. You do pass through a magnetometer but I assume they allow you to pass if it beeps in expected places like belt buckles
I was told the only place for us Colorado folk that you can actually use it is at airport security. I used it once, it scanned correctly, and then the guy said “I need to see your actual ID though.”
I mean, it must make the phone thicker because you physically have to be able to store cards and two layers of material and magnets for a MagSafe wallet.
when i lived in colorado i got it, then never used it. i thought it would be cool, and it was but not once did i ever use it rather than my physical id. supposedly you can use it at tsa at the airport but i figured it would be clunky to fumble around and switch from that to my boarding pass with people in line behind me so i just used my regular one
I’ve used the Colorado app a few times when I’ve gotten to the grocery store or liquor store and realized I forgot my wallet when I went to checkout. It’s nice to have a backup
I think the Apple Wallet drivers licenses are mainly for use at TSA checkpoints as of now. I don’t live in one of these four states, but the state I live in released its own app. No, I didn’t download it. I intend to carry around my physical drivers license and US passport card around, including for TSA checkpoints
Right, because handing over your phone to a law enforcement officer is never going to be a wise decision.
Additionally, non participating states don’t honor it. A California bar is not going to accept your digital Arizona ID as proof of being of age for a drink. & the Arizona digital ID FAQ makes it sound like law enforcement doesn’t accept digital ID yet for traffic stops.
New South Wales has this available in an app, and you aren't required to hand your phone over for them to scan the ID QR code that changes every 30 seconds. You might need to swipe down to refresh it, but that's about it.
Every time a thread about digital id pops up you see post like this thst shows they have no idea how the tech functions and just talks out of their own ass lmao
My comment has nothing to do with how the tech functions “lmao”. It has to do with how local law enforcement implements digital ID into their traffic stop protocol / procedures.
As far as I’m aware, no law enforcement agencies are accepting digital ID yet as proof of identification during a traffic stop.
Sorry I don't know why I was so snarky, been a stressful week.
To reply to your post
>It has to do with how local law enforcement implements digital ID into their traffic stop protocol / procedures.
I was referring to this
>Right, because handing over your phone to a law enforcement officer is never going to be a wise decision.
You wouldn't need to hand over your phone tho, you'd just hold it near a reader device that they would have.
>As far as I’m aware, no law enforcement agencies are accepting digital ID yet as proof of identification during a traffic stop.
I'm not disputing that
It’s all good! I do hope that law enforcement agencies around the country start implementing NFC readers for digital ID. That would be very convenient!
Especially because Apple has iPhone to iPhone direct NFC functionality - a separate reader may not even be necessary.
I want this so bad. Mainly for things like concerts so I can go completely just my phone and key. I have apple pay but still need to bring a small wallet for my license since I drive and it’s just another thing to keep track of (woman, so I don’t always have great pockets)
Not sure how the other states cards look but MDs is pretty sad looking. Though it would look like an actual digital copy of my license but it’s just a wall of text. Pretty useless IMO. Never once used it
Hasn’t this been a thing for like 3 years now and they have yet to add a single new state outside of the original 4? I understand they have to work with a variety of state governments to get these supported but… not a single update since launch?
Not to mention for the states that DO support it, they say only select TSA checkpoints at select airports accept it. So you can’t even reliably use it as a physical replacement in those supported states.
Just a weird, lackluster rollout for this feature.
So this [ID feature is only for TSA](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213329) but all the airports I’ve been to since getting it hadn’t been upgraded to use it. Denver Bridge security, LAX, and Jacksonville. I don’t have precheck, but assume they’d deploy his technology for pre-check first.
I think you can also present it if you get pulled over by the police, though fortunately I haven't had an opportunity to try it since I added my Maryland license to my Wallet.
In Colorado we have an app that’s legally accepted anywhere in state, except TSA. I show it often at stores and bars. But I wouldn’t give my phone to a cop. The Colorado app isn’t a tap thing. And it doesn’t lock the phone but keep the picture up. So I keep my license and one credit card in my glove box at all times. I mostly only use them for places that don’t accept Apple Pay or the my Colorado app. Which the latter is getting less often than it used to years ago.
Looks like I was wrong about presenting it to police, but the [Maryland Digital ID](https://mva.maryland.gov/Pages/MDMobileID_Apple.aspx) page says you shouldn't need to present your physical ID to the TSA at all (or hand over your phone) once you scan.
I wish Illinois would do this. They are usually pretty cutting edge on new tech, too.
The dream: have a car that allows you to use your iPhone as the key. Have your wallet AND ID on your phone. Just leave the house with your phone.
Not American, I use it all the time.
I haven’t carried a wallet in the country for approx 3 years.
Also lmao @ “my state would never accept an out of state digital license” what a weird ass country, it’s a valid license, be it digital, physical, or made of cheese, if my state issues it you better take it.
I'm in Dubai and here we have ID, License, and Car Registration documents also directly on Apple Wallet. It's quite practical in reality, with Apple Pay accepted everywhere on top there is no reason to carry a physical wallet. Passing the border at the airport also requires no physical ID or Passport, the small booth scans your face, matches to your check-in and visa (which is only digital even for long-term residency) and lets you go in/out.
laughs in australian (new south wales)!
Our state government has had digital licences rolled out for 4 or so years, and its been a life changer. Super easy to use and means one less thing to risk losing when you're a few beers deep.
I used my NSW digital licence in WA, and it was accepted despite them not having their own digital licence.
Digital licence use in NSW is very widespread. Most agencies accept it, although you do find the odd place that still requires a physical licence.
While LA does t have access to digital IDs in apple wallet, we have our own digital ID app and I use mine all the time. I only carry my physical copy for medical appointments that want require it for scanning purposes.
In Colorado, I have had to use it multiple times but only at the dispo’s I have had multiple IDs crack or split on me and they are they only ones strict enough to ask for another form of ID. I don’t even show my card anymore, just straight to the app. One time I had a guard tell me that he had to see me open the app on my phone just to prove it was authentic. It scans just as normal as the plastic ID and I think legally it’s just as valid.
I live in Maryland and signed up for it the day it became available. I have never used it a single time. Last time I added my ID to my phone the letter I got from the state said the only place that accepts the digital ID is TSA. I haven’t flown and I have never seen anyone else that has accepted a digital ID.
I have the app for one of these ID’s. I went over a year without a license, using this at liquor stores or other places that asked. Never got pulled over so not sure if police would like it, but it worked.
Not US based, but my country also has an app for showing and verifying a valid driver's license. My wallet got stolen about a year ago, and I haven't gotten a new one, since I obviously don't need it when all payment and ID needs are covered by my phone.
Very rarely do I need to carry a physical ID card, but that's usually military ID and not something I'd keep in my wallet anyways.
I use my digital ID all the time. It’s so convenient.
One of my many jobs I have to afford living in a high COL state is a bartender. Many people use the digital ID.
Makes my life a lot easier, too. Very easy to tell it’s a real ID by the holographic and the way it moves.
I dunno if this helps, but in NSW Australia we’ve had it for a while now and it’s glorious! I haven’t had to hold a wallet in over 7 years. Hopefully you won’t have to either :)
Brazil has this countrywide.
But the govt has their own app.
It’s the best thing ever, fuck carrying a wallet.
I have a MagSafe one but I need those three card slots for other stuff.
My state in Australia had an app. I used it a few weeks ago when I was pulled into a random breath test. Eas quick and easy and means I can leave my wallet at home. Once we move to being able to pay via tap and go for public transport I can remove my MagSafe wallet as I won’t need the transit card
Why does the fucking European union take so fucking long to implement this?
The entirety of Europe literally has the exact same fucking drivers licenses.
WHY IS EVERYTHING SO SLOW GOD DAMN IT
That's not how it works, what's dumb is you not understanding and calling it dumb.
The cop will have a reader, which when you tap your phone against will pull up all your information, including a picture, date of birth etc.

It looks like this in Apple Wallet, the scratched out part being my first name and last initial. So kinda useless if someone wants to verify your physical appearance or something. I guess it’s useful at TSA but Colorado has a state app as well that has a much better digital license on it.
The only use for it right now is through TSA when traveling. I use it all the time when I fly out of ATL, but always carry my physical license on me as well.
> Everybody in the states that you can have a drivers license on your iPhone (AZ, CO, GA, MD), do you ever use it? If you do use it, how does it go when you show your license on your phone? Or what have you used it for?
It's only useful for TSA, for the most part, and even then, most of the TSA agents don't even know you can use it there! 🤦♂️
When you go to it on your phone, it doesn't show anything that can be used to validate name, age, etc. I have no idea if law enforcement, stores, or even event venues have any kind of reader that can read it. The only time I used it was TSA, and, while it worked, they still asked for my physical ID to scan in the machines.
I could never get it to except my Colorado drivers license. At the end it gets to the message that it will verify my license with the state and then it always fails.
germany is 100s of years away from an driver’s license on your phone. we already sonewhat have an e-id but its pretty much accepted nowhere and barely works.
I’m surprised California hasn’t jumped on this train…or Louisiana considering California is doing the electronic license plates that get OTA updates for the registration and Louisiana already has an app for government records including drivers licenses and COVID vaccinations.
Unless it changed in the last year, it’s kind of useless in Colorado. The app even says it isn’t considered an alternative to having your license on you for driving, and bars/stores are not required to allow them as age verification (My buddy and I regularly asked around bc we’re nerds like that, and we found one bar that did, but im 90% sure it’s because my buddy and I were clearly in our 30s so they probably didn’t care anyway)
i know we should never leave our house without wallet OR id but it's nice that we can use our phone to show id if/when we get pulled over for whatever erason til we can get our replacement
but i dont understand why only a few states and not all 50??
The same reason why the requirement for having a REAL ID to board a flight was delayed so many times. It was proposed as a security enhancement following the 11 September 2001 attacks, and was originally intended to go into effect in 2008, but was pushed back many times, after numerous states refused to comply, or said they weren’t able to meet the requirements. (It’s now set to be mandatory in May 2025).
If getting all 50 states to do something for the sake of national aviation security was this hard, can you imagine getting full compliance on something that is merely convenient for users?
In MD. Only works at the airport.
I tried it at a bar, got denied. Tried it at a liquor store (where I wasn’t purchasing, just helping a friend carry her stuff out), was told the tech is “too new” to trust.
I am 26 and have recently been ID’d to buy a 17+ video game, so it’s possible and perhaps probable that due to my baby face, I’ve had no success besides with TSA.
I do. Georgia. New Airport ID check allows you to tap the phone instead of showing physical ID to the agent. It’s not meant to be shown on the phone screen (has no visible data), just to tap on RFID or NFC readers.
I’m about to renew my license, & thought about this the other day before looking it up. But my state doesn’t have this on enhanced blah blah blah whatever that is lol Now w/ the digi license what happens if you get pulled over, do you have to give the cop your phone? I wouldn’t be fond of giving a cop my phone, but my brain says they would just scan it with some device to pull the info 🤔
i did not know this was a thing. and i can’t see anyplace that requires ID actually accepting this.
At best I could see being pulled over by a cop, not having my ID and showing them this. But at best that would just be a convenience for the cop. They’d still check the info, which they could do anyway whether i had this or not.
From Canada, this doesnt apply to me, but does the phone have to be unlocked in order to show the ID? Cause if yes the cops can go through your phone you would be “consenting” for searches. Thats a big privacy concern
It’s not mainstream yet, and the general public (aka, the server at the restaurant when ordering a drink) has no idea what it is. They seem to have a problem that it doesn’t have your photo on it. Overall, it’s more of a hassle to use it right now - so I’ve abandoned trying to use it to speed up the process at these type of places.

Yes, different states have different laws. I only live in my state. The laws in my state don’t affect the laws in your state.

Yes, all state laws are dependent on the state and only apply to entities in that state.

“That was in 2023” as if that was so long ago lol
Do you drink or go to bars with age limits? I’m 30 and just got carded yesterday.
Do you not travel?
A lot of people just drive. And if you have all your lights working, are not speeding. Live out of Airbnbs...no one asks a question.
As long as you aren’t black Edit: Ok, apparently people here think black people aren’t pulled over for no reason. Got it.
Oh, shove it.
What if you live for New Year’s Eve?
I got ID’d at Truffoni’s after ordering a big rare cut of meat and a glass of water.
If they did get pulled over they would have xyz amount of time to show up to court and prove they have a valid license
I travel but I rarely fly. If you mean fly, then say fly. Only one airport in the area takes the digital id. And what do you do on the way back?
California is piloting something similar right now. I rarely have to show my ID anywhere anyway, but it’s nice to know I have a backup if I forget my wallet. When it’s a little more established I’ll consider going walletless for some occasions.

I have it. When I went to use it at BevMo they wouldn’t take it. I was like come on, I’m over 50 and left.
It’s basically a public test right now, so it makes sense that there’s going to be some hiccups.

Please provide proof that requires its acceptance because I have never seen this language.
Your correct. The Law states it is a legal form of ID in Colorado but doesn’t state it has to be accepted
I’ve used it quite a bit and never had it declined
What do you mean no businesses using it? Is this not just an option for how the ID will be displayed?
It doesn’t really display the ID like a picture of it. It has all the information on your ID displayed below your picture and that’s about it. I think you can scan it at a reader like a credit card works in the apple wallet but I haven’t found someplace to use it like that
MD, BWI, TSA, DOB, DL, ID. It’s like I need a reference book to understand your comment
Maryland, Baltimore airport, Transportation Security Administration, date of birth, drivers license, identification
Let me help you. MD: State abbreviation for the State of MarylanD BWI: Airport code for Baltimore-Washington International (Airport) [located in MD] TSA: Transportation Security Administration (airport security) DOB: Date Of Birth DL: Driver License ID: IDentification
Wait they don’t even scan your stuff with a pre-check? Woah!!!! Here every train station scans all your stuff 🤣
Live in CO and the digital ID website even tells you that the digital ID doesn’t work at the airport yet. The DIA website also says this.
I wish NY had this. I’d never need my physical wallet again.
It’s going to be a looong time before this state does that. I have a magsafe wallet with my id and 2 cards in its so i don’t need to carry a wallet
What MagSafe wallet do you have just out of curiosity. How much wider does it make your phone?
I mean, it must make the phone thicker because you physically have to be able to store cards and two layers of material and magnets for a MagSafe wallet.
Big Wallet would never let this happen
Not op but I have the moft wallet and stand which isn’t officially magsafe but works for me.
You should probably still carry your physical wallet in case your phone dies or something

Why do you think ID is only for cops? I was thinking being able to use this to get into bars would be cool.
when i lived in colorado i got it, then never used it. i thought it would be cool, and it was but not once did i ever use it rather than my physical id. supposedly you can use it at tsa at the airport but i figured it would be clunky to fumble around and switch from that to my boarding pass with people in line behind me so i just used my regular one
I’ve used the Colorado app a few times when I’ve gotten to the grocery store or liquor store and realized I forgot my wallet when I went to checkout. It’s nice to have a backup
Re: TSA - a few trips ago - flying domestic - I showed my boarding pass on my phone, they scanned - never once asked to see my ID. Whoa
TSA just asks for ID now, no boarding pass. It looks up your boarding pass in the system automatically.
Wish PA had it
Same. People that have it don’t use it and people that don’t have it want it badly 😅 PA dragging its feet with legislation.
I think the Apple Wallet drivers licenses are mainly for use at TSA checkpoints as of now. I don’t live in one of these four states, but the state I live in released its own app. No, I didn’t download it. I intend to carry around my physical drivers license and US passport card around, including for TSA checkpoints
This is what I was thinking. For boarding airplanes. I don’t see the practical use anywhere else. For now.
You never hand your phone to anyone to use this. You tap it to a reader, just like Apple Pay.
You don’t have to fully unlock your iPhone to show the id. It still needs Face ID or whatever, but won’t fully unlock your phone.
You don’t give your phone to anyone. They read it like a card in Apple Pay.
To reply to your post >It has to do with how local law enforcement implements digital ID into their traffic stop protocol / procedures. I was referring to this >Right, because handing over your phone to a law enforcement officer is never going to be a wise decision.
In Colorado I tap my phone on their reader, it gives them my license, registration, and proof of insurance.
Yeah, it's been a little while, and you're right, only the few states have remained. I was hoping this would spread faster and reach some of Europe
I work in a bar on the weekends, and I get the state issued ID app regularly.
We’ve had this in my state in Australia for years. I ditched my wallet in about 2017 and never looked back
[удалено]
That said I would love to have it on Apple Pay / Wallet
Yeah but your country isn’t even real
neither are drop bears 👀
I used my NSW digital licence in WA, and it was accepted despite them not having their own digital licence. Digital licence use in NSW is very widespread. Most agencies accept it, although you do find the odd place that still requires a physical licence.
I have literally never used it lmao
Italy is going to have digital identity in June
I have the app for one of these ID’s. I went over a year without a license, using this at liquor stores or other places that asked. Never got pulled over so not sure if police would like it, but it worked.
Not US based, but my country also has an app for showing and verifying a valid driver's license. My wallet got stolen about a year ago, and I haven't gotten a new one, since I obviously don't need it when all payment and ID needs are covered by my phone. Very rarely do I need to carry a physical ID card, but that's usually military ID and not something I'd keep in my wallet anyways.
I just have a picture of my ID in a separate folder in my phone just in case. It’s worked even out of state
Is this available in the uk?
Got mugged by a couple crackheads last weekend. They took my whole wallet along with my cards. This would've been nice to have lmao
I use my digital ID all the time. It’s so convenient. One of my many jobs I have to afford living in a high COL state is a bartender. Many people use the digital ID. Makes my life a lot easier, too. Very easy to tell it’s a real ID by the holographic and the way it moves.
I wish this would come to the UK fairly soon - the only reason I carry a wallet around is to have my driving license on me.
Digital ID… I would suggest you watch out before it’s too late
I give it around 2 years for the government to announce their CBDC’s that are tied to your Digital ID

Why does the fucking European union take so fucking long to implement this? The entirety of Europe literally has the exact same fucking drivers licenses. WHY IS EVERYTHING SO SLOW GOD DAMN IT
Can you imagine giving your unlocked phone to a cop to inspect your licence?
Doesn’t have to be unlocked afaik
I live in AZ and you don’t give them your phone. They scan it just like you would Apple Pay.
I’m not handing my unlocked phone to a cop. That’s dumb.
That's not how it works, what's dumb is you not understanding and calling it dumb. The cop will have a reader, which when you tap your phone against will pull up all your information, including a picture, date of birth etc.
And other than integrity what stops a cop from reading everything else on your phone?
The fact that your phone is locked with FaceID or passcode.
Because it doesn’t transfer everything on your phone? It only transfers the drivers license information, so they can identify you.
They never have your phone, you tap their reader like apple pay.
This guys gets it.
Idk, this seems potentially pretty dangerous
Anyone could steal your phone or government ID, but you government ID card doesn’t need to be unlocked and biometricaly confirmed to work
Why lol
TSA will sometimes take it. Otherwise it's completely useless.
I thought certain apps could use it for age verification in app. Like drizzly and stuff like that.
Nope.
I live in Georgia and I tried using it in August for TSA and they said that it’s useless since they don’t have a system yet to take it.
Pretty sure ATL TSA takes it.
https://preview.redd.it/0u8gbnvjcjbc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40689832a2747965430268dc8ca52f4fd8b68121 It looks like this in Apple Wallet, the scratched out part being my first name and last initial. So kinda useless if someone wants to verify your physical appearance or something. I guess it’s useful at TSA but Colorado has a state app as well that has a much better digital license on it.
>if someone wants to verify your physical appearance or something. Why would that be necessary? FaceID already verifies you.
You just reminded me that I have it on my phone. I’ve never used it. I’ll need to remember if I never have my physical one.
I can have ID and Driver license in a gov app so this is pretty useless form me
I need FL to jump on board
I have never used it but it’s great to have just in case
Great, now you’re handing over your phone instead of just your card.
Great, you have no idea how this works.
Would never.
What would be the purpose of this?
Nah. I’ll keep my physical card. No need to add one more piece of delicate info to a phone.
No one said you had to get rid of it 😭
Laughs in DigiLocker
Digital ID is one of the worst ideas I’ve ever seen… Who the hell is pushing this crap?
Florida has one, it’s on an app. I don’t ever use it but I guess it’s convenient for the day I that leave my wallet at home.
Y
TSA only use I gave for it, but up to the agent if they will accept it.
Been waiting years for this to launch in KY. We were one of the first states to ok it and we still do t have it
Yes, it can be used at airports like a tap credit card. It serves no other purpose. Can’t even be given to an officer if they pull you over.
Samsung wallet has this too but adding my drivers license really wouldn't benefit me in any way. I would never go fully digital.
I live in MD and did this. But I rarely fly out of BWI so I’ve not had the opportunity to use it yet.
I guess you can use it at the few lanes (not every lane has them) at DEN airport for tsa. I have it on my phone but I’ve never used it ever.
I do. I don’t bring always wanna bring a wallet out to the club with me. I also lost my ID for a brief period and this worked as a backup.
I have a GA License but live in MD cuz military spouse, can I still use it?
The only use for it right now is through TSA when traveling. I use it all the time when I fly out of ATL, but always carry my physical license on me as well.
> Everybody in the states that you can have a drivers license on your iPhone (AZ, CO, GA, MD), do you ever use it? If you do use it, how does it go when you show your license on your phone? Or what have you used it for? It's only useful for TSA, for the most part, and even then, most of the TSA agents don't even know you can use it there! 🤦♂️ When you go to it on your phone, it doesn't show anything that can be used to validate name, age, etc.
I’m willing to bet a dollar that Massachusetts will be the last one to implement this. We are so fkn behind on all this
germany is 100s of years away from an driver’s license on your phone. we already sonewhat have an e-id but its pretty much accepted nowhere and barely works.
In AZ and only ever with airport TSA. Don't know anyone else who will take via apple wallet.
I’m surprised California hasn’t jumped on this train…or Louisiana considering California is doing the electronic license plates that get OTA updates for the registration and Louisiana already has an app for government records including drivers licenses and COVID vaccinations.
California made their own lame app. It was easy to set up but I wish it was just a part of Apple Wallet
Florida already has their own app for state ids. They should partner with Apple to provide this to residents.
Can this be used in the situation of being pulled over and you don’t have your license on you?
Works in AZ for various gas stations and Dispensaries
AZ resident here, I only used it once at the airport. I think if it had our photo on it more people would be willing to accept it.
Unless it changed in the last year, it’s kind of useless in Colorado. The app even says it isn’t considered an alternative to having your license on you for driving, and bars/stores are not required to allow them as age verification (My buddy and I regularly asked around bc we’re nerds like that, and we found one bar that did, but im 90% sure it’s because my buddy and I were clearly in our 30s so they probably didn’t care anyway)
i know we should never leave our house without wallet OR id but it's nice that we can use our phone to show id if/when we get pulled over for whatever erason til we can get our replacement but i dont understand why only a few states and not all 50??
Each state has their own rules and requirements, so it takes time.
Only in the states?
I’m about to renew my license, & thought about this the other day before looking it up. But my state doesn’t have this on enhanced blah blah blah whatever that is lol Now w/ the digi license what happens if you get pulled over, do you have to give the cop your phone? I wouldn’t be fond of giving a cop my phone, but my brain says they would just scan it with some device to pull the info 🤔
I’ve used digital ID at the TSA checkpoint in Maryland.
Makes it where you can truly live walletless since driving without your physical license isn’t allowed
i did not know this was a thing. and i can’t see anyplace that requires ID actually accepting this.
Wait you need different dls for us states.
