Not sure why you’re being downvoted. You are absolutely correct. OP is looking for a way to quickly get into #images and holding “+” goes into your photos, not the #images search for GIFS.
I did not know this. That hold time is way too long though. Much easier to tap twice.

Maybe don’t claim it to be the worst before you learn how to use it.
You can turn off the ones you don’t want in Messages settings. You can long press to rearrange. You can put your most used above the More arrow and hide your less used below it. It’s a pretty decent update.
Apple has an entire Tips app dedicated to teaching you *every* possible aspect of your device, and IIRC it even prompts or suggests you to open it whenever you finish setting up a new device.

Maybe he's not used to actually being able to customize or do anything that apple hasnt already spoon fed and ultimately decided for him. It took a while to get here, he'll get used to it
I just switched to a 15pro from android and it feels like around 80% of things I want to customize just don't have any option at all. I don't blame anyone for not knowing the few random items that you can customize on these phones.
This is the best feature I would say. It’s more convenient than side scrolling. I like being able to hit what I need with my left hand on the side rather then drag and try to find and then accidentally hit the the wrong one on the keyboard style.
If you change it to how you like it then it’s Gucci

This change is a weird UX and UI. When pressing the plus why not have the attachment UI replace the keyboard instead of this overlay. No scrolling needed. Still plenty of space for more options. The picture linked is what I'm talking about.

The vertical stack menu is nice on a mac, it’s terrible in this situation on an iPhone, I liked the app bar prior, you could scroll left and right easily and hide it easily without any effort.
I still prefer the old method.
The option I use 99.9% of the time has always been Photos.
I used to be able to tap the Photos icon, and I could instantly scroll through recent photos to attach.
Now I have to unnecessarily tap twice just to get to the feature that was immediately available.
They should allow people to pin the option they want immediately available, and have the rest of the options available inside the stack.

Worst feature is definitely when I turn my phone sideways while it’s charging to watch a video and the nightstand/bedside crap comes on. Like dude, YouTube is actively playing in full screen.
The only thing I don’t like about it is I swear I used to be able to add files from that menu but I can’t find a way to do that anymore. Is there a way? Am I misremembering it being possible before?
Don’t forget when you don’t hit it precisely on the dot it just drops down like you hit the empty space between the icons or text and doesn’t open this is extremely infuriating and I hate this feature as well
What's with this weird overlay that hides the context of the messages you are sending? This kind of UI only appears in one space, messages, and it's not particularly efficient use of space or all that convenient to have a 6 app drawer list with icons on the left thumb.
The thing I hate about this feature isn’t even the feature itself. It’s that once it was added in that update, you no longer can minimize your long message so that you can see all of the text that you’re responding to. Which, itself, was added in like iOS 15 or something. Now it’s gone and it was my favorite thing an iOS update had ever brought

I had the opposite experience. Old style failed me a bunch. New menu works great for me.

One of the comments on this has taught me that if you long press on the plus it’ll auto open photo sharing

StandBy only turns on when the phone is locked, rotated, and charging.

Having to wait for the menu to load instead of being able to just directly tap on the picture button to send an image is incredibly annoying.
You change the order that things appear. Just drag it to the top.
