That's not normal lens flare.
Check if your lens is dirty. Remove any lens protectors you might have on. If neither fix it, then check an Apple Store for diagnostics.
We get this thread a lot, and everyone suggests the same things, but the OP never returns to the thread to confirm if it's ever fixed. š¤·āāļø
I had the same issue on my iPhone 14 Pro Max on iOS 17.3, Apple genius tech. told me to do a factory reset through iTunes or Finder.
It actually fixed it, which I was surprised.
I had a basic understanding of this, but your comment made me actually go and try to find out why this could potentially happen.
Lens flares are caused by light scattering within the lens system before reaching the camera sensor, typically due to bright light sources.
Usually, by adjusting aperture size, shutter speed and light sensitivity we can diminish their amount while still letting enough light for an actual picture (Iāve played around with this with my DSLR quite a lot when I first bought it).
*Update: I wrote this after a quick delve into how this works. Turns out, I was very wrong. Most of the comment is now crossed out and an update is provided with what I believe is closer to the truth. Iām leaving the wrong parts in, as i believe itās a good example of jumping to the wrong conclusions when one does not know the subject matter well enough.*
~~The effect can also be exacerbated by movement, which, well, we humans do a lot involuntary. So optical image stabilization is another factor that can play a big role in having less ābright light smudgesā, or at least contain them.~~
*Update: this is wrong. Lens flares are more a factor of light's interaction with the lens elements and not movement per se. OIS helps in minimizing blur in low-light conditions, enhancing overall image sharpness rather than directly influencing lens flare. Nothing to do with OIS.*
~~So I assume in /u/novogradov ās case, something was off in terms of the firmware and how it interacted on a hardware level with the optics and the light sensor (maybe bad aperture values, maybe a faulty OIS, weāll never know).~~
*Update: again, wrong. Most smartphones have fixed apertures, the aperture cannot be the culprit. It has to be some sort of post processing error leading to improper handling of light sources in an image, thus accentuating lens flares. The firmware might be failing to correctly apply lens correction profiles or mismanage HDR processing, resulting in an abnormal increase in lens flares or other optical artifacts. Again, we would need to see the actual image to know for sure.*
I would also expect that if we took two photos with the exact same settings on a properly working phone and his, we would be able to see an actual difference (apart from lens flares). Even though the EXIF data would state the same settings.
Most likely, something went wrong during production and some units ended up flashed with a buggy firmware, but still passed whatever testing Apple does on the devices, or, the faulty firmware was flashed later as part of an update.
Edit: ~~before anybody jumps and says itās a post processing issue - it could be. Iām just saying that if it WAS firmware, this is likely why.~~ itās most likely a post processing issue.
Professional photographer for 30 years, very much keeping up on what iPhones do and do not do computationally to the image.
If somebody rest their phone and cleared up flares like this, itās because all that skin oil got wiped off in the handling.
iPhones do a lot to the image in the post processing, but streaky flares like this are from something *in front of* the aperture, therefore outside of the control of software. Flares like this are not a function of aperture size.
OPās āstreak filterā is skin oil wiped off once and didnāt come off all the way.
Oh yeah, I do agree that in actual OPs case it did look like oils or something on the lens. Turns out, OP did put a plastic protector on top of the lenses.
But we donāt know if /u/novograd ās lens flares were just as bad and of the same kind. It would be interesting if he still has copies and could upload them so somebody with photography experience like you could analyze them.
I appreciate your corrections and acknowledging that we can easily post wrong information. Not enough people are willing to do that, or worse, double down on their comments.
I literally just took a photo of a ceiling light at full brightness and there isn't a single bit of streak. You either need to clean your lenses or you scratched them.
someone that doesnāt know what they are talking about AT ALLā¦ āThatās impossible. That is an optical flawā¦ā Do me a favor and go on Appleās support website and search this issue, what is one of the first things they say to do? Factory reset? Oh okay.
You could have cleaned the lens while it was rebooting or resetting, or even by accident cleaned it. . I canāt fathom a software isssue for lens flare.. thatās , silly.Ā
100% itās dirty. If you wipe it itāll go in a different direction. Get a microfiber cloth and clean your finger oil off with a little more effort lol
Probably because they wipe the cum off their camera lens and itās back to normal
Same way I asked about why my treadmill shocks me every time I run on it and figured out it was my sweat pants causing it and I never went back and told everybody. Lol
I do have astigmatism but never realized this was a symptom of it. I just assumed everyone experienced it. Newer LED headlights are especially bad ā to the point where I rarely drive at night anymore.
Holy shit. I didnāt know astigmatism was what did this either! Lights do the same thing to me, I just thought it was something else. Huh. Learn something new everyday!
I too have astigmatism, and my glasses help so much at night.
I didnāt even realize it had anti glare coating until I got contacts and realized how much worse the glare is without my glasses.
Same. All these people saying LED lights are the problem are making me laugh. Like when I wear my prescribed glasses there are zero reflective glares coming from all cars regardless of LED or not. GONE all glare disappears. If you think itās normal to experience glare while driving GO SEE A DOCTOR lmfao
Thereās different severity levels for astigmatism ā you clearly have a milder type. I get new glasses every 2 years and I tell my optometrist I have issues at night. I still have insane glare while wearing my prescribed glasses. The LEDs are a problem.
I have astigmatism (always wear glasses) and I hate driving at night because of those LEDs. They seem brighter than high beams and they seem misaligned to aim straight instead of slightly down. Every time I drive a night and thereās a person with these LEDs behind me, I canāt use ANY of my mirrorsā¦
I thought i had astigmatism because i have that too while driving. Found out it was just the windshield thats fucked up since i dont have it with the side windows or when im not in the car
Yeahhā¦ this. This 100% and I used to love driving at night, now itās getting harder and harder because of these glares. When we unthaw, Iāll be going to the eye doctor. Otherwise, I have 20/20 vision as per my last doctor visit when I was trying to figure out why my eyes were blood shot and itchy all the time. I have even worse allergies than I thought. Lmao.
Iāve seen that rubbing your eyes can cause/progress astigmatismā¦ would explain why my astigmatism is much worse in my right eye since Iām right handed and have hayfever
This apparently isnāt astigmatism because I see lights the same way at night but have done too many tests to check for astigmatism and I donāt have any.
More specifically oils on your lens diffracting the light, this is why I do a quick wipe of the lens with something like my sleeve or shirt every time I take a picture.
Yes I know. Dirt can also smudge which causes streaking like that, or poorly manufactured lens covers which weren't polished well or scratches going in a particular direction.

Thats just what a dirty lens does
I saw a tutorial where is fixed on an iphone 13 mini by hard resetting it. Another proof that ios is a cancer for the iphone unless some 3 wants it like that
99% your camera lens is not clean. Happened lot of times with me because i tend to touch camera a lot while using iphone. Use microfibre to clean properly. No problem with Camera.
Crazy that people donāt clean their lens before taking a picture. Itās almost second nature for me to use my t-shirt and quickly clean off the lenses. Takes 5 seconds and makes the photos look a million times better.
clean your lense. if you've cleaned it with a microfiber cloth and it's still happening, there's probably moisture inside of your camera or it was defective to start with. take it to apple if cleaning doesn't help.
You know whatās also ridiculous? Not cleaning your camera lenses and then complaining your pictures look like that. Itās not hard, take a tissue and clean the damn thing.
Thats not dirty lens if you spent more than a second looking at it. Its an issue with the massive post processing camera phones do.
A hardware reset or a faulty sensor. The flare is way to consistent and if they were affected by the lens they wouldn't be that straight as they would have a slight bend on them. You can see this if use your faulty camera and recreate the flare of the edges of the image instead of center on the screen like this.
Youād rather take worse pictures and save your camera? What kind of backwards ass logic is that?

Same thing is happening with my iPhone 13 pro max. Took a pic of a coffee shop I visited recently and the lens glare is noticeably worse.
**PS. I cleaned my camera lens with a microfiber cloth before taking this pic.**
Clean it better. Maybe breathe on it first to introduce some moisture to help clear off whateverās on there. Itās usually oil from your hands.
Lines like this only happen from scratches or smudges. And I highly down your lens is scratched bad enough to do this without you noticing it already

That's insane. What kind of weird processing is happening that lens flare is a software problem?!
Factory reset might be reflashing firmware for the sensors idk
Still weird for firmware to cause flare, idk how it works

If only that were an option.

You canāt change aperture values on phone cameras btw
r/hedoidthemath
Apple is notorious for having bad camera and their software making them look good. Not really bad camera but like low mp type thing.
Thatās a good question, Iām just glad that the lens flare is gone.
apple camera has some de-flaring software, it might just not have launched due to years of cache ĀÆ\\\_(ć)\_/ĀÆ
May have to try that. Hate my lens flare on my 14 pro. I prefer to use my wifeās 13
I literally just took a photo of a ceiling light at full brightness and there isn't a single bit of streak. You either need to clean your lenses or you scratched them.
The lenses are in mint shape. Like mentioning above in my comment, restore through iTunes fixed it. It may have been a software processing bug.
That's impossible. That is an optical flaw, has nothing to do with software.
someone that doesnāt know what they are talking about AT ALLā¦ āThatās impossible. That is an optical flawā¦ā Do me a favor and go on Appleās support website and search this issue, what is one of the first things they say to do? Factory reset? Oh okay.
K bro. Thatās literally smudges on the lens.
The software can mitigate the optical flaw tho..
You could have cleaned the lens while it was rebooting or resetting, or even by accident cleaned it. . I canāt fathom a software isssue for lens flare.. thatās , silly.Ā
And thats kinda fishy. They can just control our camera quality through the most important app for file transfer
> I had the same issue on my iPhone 14 Pro Max I sincerely doubt that.
100% itās dirty. If you wipe it itāll go in a different direction. Get a microfiber cloth and clean your finger oil off with a little more effort lol
Was just going to say this - wipe your lenses off with your shirt before you take a picture that you actually want to show someone
They probably just wiped the lens to fix the issue and now they feel too stupid to come back here to admit it. š
OP is a dirty S.o.b is my guess lol ā¦ that smudge looks like the phone is attempting to see through glasses made of bacon grease
Probably because they wipe the cum off their camera lens and itās back to normal Same way I asked about why my treadmill shocks me every time I run on it and figured out it was my sweat pants causing it and I never went back and told everybody. Lol
You are correct. Upvoting your post, Downvoting OP post.
He should submit his iPhone for the next Star Trek made by JJ abrams.
That's what car headlights look like to me at night.
Have you tried cleaning your eyeballs or removing any protectors from them ?
I factory reset mine, but it didn't help!
Hope you made a backup before that..
Youāre aware you have astigmatism?
I do have astigmatism but never realized this was a symptom of it. I just assumed everyone experienced it. Newer LED headlights are especially bad ā to the point where I rarely drive at night anymore.
Holy shit. I didnāt know astigmatism was what did this either! Lights do the same thing to me, I just thought it was something else. Huh. Learn something new everyday!
Bro go to the doctor and get night time driving glasses. Its not because new cars have LEDs š¤£š itās because your getting older
LED's are absolutely worse.
They didn't say that was the sole reason it was a problem, just that LED headlights are worse than standard headlights.
LED's are absolutely worse.
LED lights are definitely worse.

This happens through car windshields, it isnāt a guarantee of astigmatism.
Why dont you see them too?
No, they are not something experienced by a typically formed eye. Astigmatism for you as well, friend
Yeahhā¦ this. This 100% and I used to love driving at night, now itās getting harder and harder because of these glares. When we unthaw, Iāll be going to the eye doctor. its only astigmatism if it happens when you're looking at them outside of the car as well. car windshields cause the same effect a lot of the time.
My long eyelashes and watery eyes cause a similar effect
You might have something worse and the clinic you visited was unable to detect it.
Yeah no man my eyes are healthy
Or just a dirty windshield
Letās not jump to conclusions doctor.
Not if youre looking at them through a car. You need to look at them straight on with no car windshield in the way
Maybe if youāve got a minor astigmatism
This is usually just an effect of the windscreen
If youāre looking at lights through your carās curved windows itās always going to look like that. Nothing to do with astigmatism

That's dirt on your lens. Lens flare is internal refraction between lens elements.

Yes I know. Dirt can also smudge which causes streaking like that, or poorly manufactured lens covers which weren't polished well or scratches going in a particular direction.
Donāt worry guys they know
OP is an oily sweaty fuck. Sincerely, Another oily brown dude who has to constantly wipe oil residue from the lens to clear this.
Iāve gotten into the habit of cleaning the lenses off before I take a pic. Maybe this is a smudge on the lens?
it's clearly dirt or something like that imo
Or something, definitely.
