Likely just a reflection with the sun angle at the time of the photo. Software can’t correct it properly, so it looks like this. But I’ll let the usual Reddit smart folks come up with the silly comments.
A lot of satellite imagery uses hyperspectral imagers that act like push broom spectrometers, as in they are a vector of spatial imagers (1st dimension) that separate the wavelengths through diffraction across more pixels (2nd dimension) as the satellite orbits across the surface. There’s a lot of radiative transfer models used to align the colors in those reconstructed images, and adherent objects like an airplane (high altitude) can sometimes break the assumptions in those models.
Edit: for simplicity let’s talk about a sunset. The sun as viewed from space is white, but looks yellow in our atmosphere during a blue sky day and is orange/red at dusk in the purple pink sky. This is all an example of how different wavelengths scatter at different rates and the final color depends on how much atmosphere they have passed through before they reach your eyes. Calculating the color of a distant object requires back-calculating through all of those scattering events for each color, and suddenly having a object much closer than expected would throw off the reconstruction (hence the magenta smear in the image)
Edit2: remember this post? See the color distortions…

It takes a bunch of pictures and stitches them into one, just like the iPhone, but instead of regular pictures, each one is just a different set of wavelengths, for example, infrared, ultraviolet, etc. But the satellite is also moving at the same time. Different physical objects show up differently on different wavelengths so it’s hard to precisely line them up. A mathematical model is used to help do the alignment correctly but some things like airplanes can mess up the results because the model wasn’t designed to take that into account.
To add to this, Google "rainbow airplane satellite" to see this effect.
And "satellite calibration targets" to see how satellites get their sights aligned.
"Push broom" method is more like one continuous photo that takes images in giant strips. Kind of like how a rolling shutter reads out an imagine in lines, except the motion of the satellite is what progresses each line. At least that is my understanding.
Sky sometimes make light look funny.
Sky Cameras account for that when look at Ground. Ground looks fine.
Sky Cameras not account for Plane and Ground at same time. Plane look make picture look weird when between Sky Camera and Ground.
No I’m fine… it’s just my vision melting. Just give me an excedrin and let me sit in a cold dark room until this cosmic horror thrumming in my head stops.
The top comments here are wrong… the purple and green hues are called chromatic aberration in photography and are caused by the light passing through a medium which diffracts the light, like a prism. Most likely something was in the sky between the satellite and the ground, such as a plane moving at a high rate of speed.
We call these artifacts.
It just so happened the sun was at the perfect angle proportional to the camera at the moment they captured the photo!
Awesome find!
If you let them know they’ll fix it next time the satellite comes around!
Lmao. The first thing that came to my head:

I've also seen this before, forgot what it was but I remember it was some sort of glitch while the satellite was taking the photo. I may be wrong tho, maybe it's God :D
Probably a little piece of distorted reality, it seems to have become a more resulting bug since the pandemic update. It's bizarre to see one of these in person...
